AN I&M CANAL TOWN
Lockport, Illinois
Illinois is the nation's most populous inland state. Its successful growth is due in large part to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, a revolutionary development that linked the Great Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The I&M Canal was vital to the development of the great City of Chicago and to the economic development of the Midwest; the Canal also fostered the growth of the small settlement that became the City of Lockport. The beautiful Des Plaines River Valley was a portage site for the Des Plaines River for the Miami and Potawatomi, and famed explorers Joliet and Marquette traversed the region on their journeys.

NEW A
Place toPlay
Experience Burr Ridge’s Route 66-themed playground
Route 66’s newest attraction is introducing visitors of all ages to the history and fun of this legendary roadway! The Burr Ridge Park District, helmed by Director of Parks and Recreation Jim Pacanowski, has created an immersive new play landscape themed after some of the top attractions found along Historic Route 66.
Located at Harvester Park in Burr Ridge, just a stone’s throw from historic Old Route 66 and conveniently close to I-55, County Line Road and Illinois Route 83 Kingery Highway, this amazingly detailed park amenity is already a hit with parents, guardians and Mother Road travelers alike. Simulating a trip along The Mother Road, park goers are treated to an interactive cross-country journey across several pieces of children’s play equipment – all immaculately designed to look like popular roadside stops.
Your journey starts along a tiny version of The First Hundred Miles, where kids can scale The Tower – a multi-tiered jungle gym festooned with faux steel girders and radio towers, looking like a certain iconic Chicago
structure located near the start of Route 66. The tower, which is one of the park’s most detailed show pieces, allows kids to climb into the “sewer system” of the building (in reality, the lowest tier of the jungle gym) where they can spin simulated water valves and activate mock oversized electrical switches. The next two levels feature slides decorated with local interstate signs. One modest-sized slide is perfect for younger kids, while the second slide provides a more thrilling experience at nearly triple the length and double the height.
This level of care and detail can be found all across the park, incorporating classic playground amenities and perfectly pairing them with fun and campy Route 66 theming. Traveling from the Illinois section to the Missouri section, you’ll be greeted with boulders representing the iconic Meramec Caverns. As you continue along the rubber playground flooring designed to look like a two-lane blacktop road, you’ll find a 60-foot-long zipline representing the modern interstate, and a rusted Chevy towtruck with cartoon eyes – inspired loosely by
an iconic Route 66 animated film character. In the Oklahoma section of the park you’ll find climbing tunnels that pay tribute to the classic Blue Whale roadside attraction, while in the nearby Texas section you’ll see two spray-painted cars half buried in the ground – a clever homage to Amarillo’s Cadillac Ranch classic public art installation, a fixture of the modern Route 66 road trip.
Next, in the New Mexico section, kids can bounce on top of a representation of The Blue Hole, a popular stop on the Mother Road that features a clear blue pool of water, with extensive underwater caves. In the Arizona area, children can take a spin on a Wigwam Motel-inspired rope structure. The route comes to an end in California, where a pier-themed area allows you to surf on the turf with a springy balance board. At the end of the route, you’ll find a giant three-dimensional Route 66 photo-op sign!
This multi-generational play area is sure to be hugely popular with travelers of all ages – allowing even the youngest road trip enthusiasts to get their kicks on Route 66!

A SIGN OF THE PAST
uietly nestled in the small community of Cayuga, about halfway between Pontiac and Odell on The First Hundred Miles of Historic Route 66, you’ll spot an original Meramec Caverns barn sign. This towering text painted on the roofs of barns was once a common roadside sight throughout the Midwest. Meramec Caverns barn signs have become a rare and nostalgic sightseeing opportunity – time capsules offering a glimpse into the history of advertising and travel during the heyday of Route 66.
Originally erected in the mid1930s to promote a tourist cave located in Sullivan, Missouri, these iconic advertising signs could be found in 14 states during the promotion’s height – the majority in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Arkansas.
Meramec sign experts estimate there were over 400 barn signs created – fewer than 50 remain today. Federal beautification laws passed in the late 1960s brought an end to the practice, but the original signs have been grandfathered in, and now stand as a monument to the beloved roadside kitsch of yesteryear.
Initially dubbed Saltpeter Cave, Meramec Caverns had a fascinating history long before it became one of the nation’s favorite roadside attractions. Home to a rich deposit of potassium nitrate, a key ingredient in the manufacturing of gunpowder, the network of caverns became a hotly contested piece of land for more than a century, following its colonial discovery in 1720. During the height of the Civil War, Confederate troops destroyed a Union-held gunpowder facility inside the cave – which brought an inauspicious end to potassium nitrate mining in the caverns.
By the 1890s, the cave’s future as a tourist destination was materializing. Locals from nearby Stanton, Missouri, would host dances in the cool cavern auditorium during summer months to avoid the debilitating heat. In 1933, during the nation’s boom of cross-country automobile travel, entrepreneur and amateur spelunker Lester Dill saw the potential of turning the cave into a major roadside destination. Under Dill’s leadership, the caves were renamed Meramec Caverns, and new spaces with breathtaking stalactites were discovered and made accessible to tourists.
PAST
Perhaps more famous than Dill’s cavern discoveries were his unconventional promotional methods. During the summer months, Dill hired crews to paint barns set along America’s new network of cross-country roadways. Dill’s innovative bargain was simple: he would offer the farmers a completely free new coat of barn paint, provided they were permitted to also paint a large sign on the barn to advertise the caverns to passing cars. Dill also pioneered a precursor to the modern bumpersticker, long before vinyl and sticker adhesive had been invented. While visitors toured his cave, Dill would have
employees tie small Meramec Caverns signs to the bumpers of their cars – giving him free advertising and the visitors a complimentary souvenir.
The Cayuga Barn was restored by volunteers of the Route 66 Association of Illinois Preservation Committee in 1998, and has interpretive signage provided by Hampton Hotels Save-A-Landmark Program. There’s a convenient pull-off location on Historic Route 66 that gives travelers an excellent angle for photographing the sign.
The photo-op pull-off is about five miles northeast of Pontiac and about 280 miles northeast of the actual Meramec Caverns.

This annual festival invites everyone to experience life in the slow lane, and savor the sights of historic Route 66. Each community has produced a one-of-a-kind lineup of events, from full-fledged festivals to antique and craft sales, art sales, car and motorcycle shows and live music.
Star Wars Day
JOLIET | Star Wars Day, one of the most popular annual festivals along The First Hundred Miles of Route 66, transports visitors from America’s Mother Road to “a galaxy far, far away”.
