Don’t let
sore feet
trip up your travel plans
(ARA) - Whether you travel for business or pleasure, whether you fly, drive or take a train, there’s one other mode of transportation you’ll almost certainly use on your trip: your feet.
shoe removal, go with a comfortable, supportive athletic shoe that will allow your feet to breathe and provides ample cushioning.
During the course of a regular day, the average person walks 8,000 to 10,000 steps, but that number can increase dramatically when you’re traveling. From inappropriate footwear to long stretches of inactivity in cramped cars or airplane seats, traveling can be hard on your feet.
Never go barefoot through airport security While current security regulations require all travelers to remove their shoes, you’re not required to remove your socksunless a security officer asks you to. Keep your socks on to help protect your feet from dirt and bacteria.
“Exploring a new destination with family and friends, or getting to that important business meeting on time should not involve having to struggle with foot pain,” says Michael King, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “By following basic foot care practices, travelers can help ensure foot pain doesn’t slow down their enjoyment of the journey.” If you’re planning a trip, the APMA recommends you take a few steps to ease the wear and tear on your foot muscles and joints: Start out with the proper footwear If you’re flying, shoes that slide on and off easily make sense, but don’t sacrifice health and safety for convenience. Choose footwear that is comfortable and supportive. Business travelers - especially women - may want to pack their dress shoes in their carry on and wear comfortable footwear while traveling. If you’re driving, and don’t have to worry about speedy
If possible, get up and walk around every 45 minutes Sitting for long periods of time restricts blood flow to the legs and feet, which can lead to swelling and, in extreme cases, blood clots. If walking around isn’t possible-if you’re in a car for a couple of hours or stuck in your seat during a turbulent flight-exercise your legs, ankles and feet while seated. Roll your ankles and point your toes up and down to encourage blood flow. If you have the room to do so, raise each knee and hold it for a few seconds while tensing your thigh muscles. If your feet begin to swell, unlace your shoes.
Finally, travel time is no time to try breaking in new shoes. In fact, new shoes should never have to be “broken in” before they feel comfortable. Shoes should be comfortable, without chafing or pinching, from the first time you put them on, otherwise, don’t buy them. “Our research tells us that most Americans say they have foot pain at least some of the time,” King says. “When you’re traveling, it’s no time to contend with foot pain. Travelers can protect their foot health by following simple precautions.” To learn more about foot health, call Northwest Podiatry at 847-608-9494 or visit www.nwpodiatry.com.
Pack a foot care emergency kit Even with the best precautions, vacation walking can create a foot emergency. Pack a foot care emergency kit that’s equipped with adhesive bandages, antibiotic cream, tweezers and nail clippers. You can also include foot lotion for a soothing massage.

to Allergy Shots
For nearly a century, doctors have known that the best way to control environmental allergy symptoms is by retraining your immune system to tolerate substances that you are currently over-reacting to. This is known as “immunotherapy”.
What is Sublingual Immunotherapy? According to Dr. Sakina Bajowala, Board-certified Allergist/Immunologist at Kaneland Allergy and Asthma Center in North Aurora, sublingual immunotherapy, or allergy drops, can offer the benefits of immunotherapy to a wider array of patients. Dr. Bajowala explains: “These drops are made from the same FDA-approved allergen extracts used in allergy injection treatments. Sublingual immunotherapy is the most commonly prescribed form of immunotherapy in Europe, and has helped patients manage pollen, animal, mold, and dust mite allergies.” Because allergy drops have a very low rate of allergic reactions, they are considered safe enough to give in the home setting. Imagine, reversing your allergies in the comfort and convenience of your own home!
Kaneland Allergy & Asthma Center 66 Miller Dr., Suite 101 North Aurora, IL 60542 630-504-2200 www.kanelandallergy.com How Does It Work? Here’s how the process works: after determination of your environmental sensitivities in the office, your allergist creates a customized set of allergy drops for you or your child to self-administer under the tongue, on a daily basis. Dr. Bajowala explains that over the course of a few weeks, your dose will gradually increase to what is known as a “maintenance” dose. This is the daily dose required to fully retrain your immune system, so that it no longer produces allergic reactions in response to allergen exposure. Dr. Bajowala reports that based on extensive experience with allergy injection therapy, a full course of immunotherapy usually takes 3-5 years, after which you can expect to continue the benefits for up to another 10 years after discontinuation. Investigations are still underway to determine if this sustained period of symptom improvement after stopping therapy also applies to allergy “drops”, but preliminary studies suggest that it may.
copay for many brand-name medications). Generally, flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts can be used to pay for sublingual immunotherapy. Like all medical therapies, allergy drops are not suitable for every patient. There is evidence that allergy drops work very well for patients with a few specific allergies, but allergy injections work better for patients with multiple environmental allergies. In addition, Dr. Bajowala cautions that only environmental extracts are FDA-approved for allergen immunotherapy. (Immunotherapy for food allergies is still under investigation to determine the safest methods of treatment.) Only your allergy specialist can determine which type of treatment is the best fit for you or your child, so talk to your doctor. If you’re tired of taking medication every day for allergies or asthma, and want to treat the cause-- allergen immunotherapy may be right for you! Anything Else I Need To Know? You should know that sublingual immunotherapy is considered an “off-label” use of an FDA-approved product - this means that some health insurance plans may not reimburse for the modest costs of treatment (as low as $50 per month- similar to the monthly

Until recently, immunotherapy required multiple small injections over a period of time (subcutaneous immunotherapy). Although allergy injection treatment is very safe and effective, weekly trips to the doctor for shots are not always convenient for today’s busy families. This means that many patients are not able to take advantage of allergen immunotherapy’s numerous health benefits, such as decreased need for medications, improved hay fever and asthma control, prevention of asthma in high-risk children, and a better night’s sleep.

Get a
Professional Trainer
I’ve been training people professionally for over five years in big fitness gym chains, private gyms and at the client’s homes. The largest part of my business has become at-home personal training, which is a huge growing trend in the Chicagoland area. This is the time of year when most people start exercising and eating better. Unfortunately, most of them quit their diet and exercise programs by the third week in January. At-home personal training is great for motivating people to get to their goals. You’re far more likely to do your exercise program when you don’t have to drive to and from a gym. The personal trainer comes to your home, eliminating the need to pay for a gym membership, gas and
travel time. You’re also more likely to keep your workout schedule when the personal trainer comes to you. This is perfect for people with busy schedules, children and other activities. Many people have admitted that they are embarrassed to exercise in a public space, or that they are overwhelmed by all the exercise equipment choices and the lack of privacy. Training in the comfort of your home solves all of that.
The best part is personal training will become part of your lifestyle, instead of something you force yourself to do. My clients look forward to our training sessions, and I enjoy helping them progress. I train everyone from stay-at-home moms to high-end athletes. So think about an at-home personal trainer for your fitness needs. We do house calls!
You can get all the expertise, guidance and motivation of an exercise professional without leaving your house. All you need is a space that’s as little as 5 feet by 5 feet. You don’t even need expensive exercise equipment (although if you do have it, it can be incorporated into your program.)
Achieve your fitness goals with TW Fitness Chicagoland’s Premier At-Home Personal Training Service • One-on-one personal training in the comfort of your own home!
• Flexible hours that fit your schedule.
• Save money–no expensive membership to a crowded gym.

Welcome
midwifery service to the Fox Valley area by Janeta Dimante, M. D., F.A.C.O.G, obstetrician gynecologist
The term midwife means “with woman” and reflects a philosophy of care that is directed towards women’s health and well being, recognizing that conception, pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are natural life processes. Midwifery enhances these life experiences and provides an individualized education, counseling, support during prenatal care, and hands-on assistance during labor, delivery and postpartum.
Doctor Janeta Dimante is very happy to welcome to her practice Sherri Wiley-Benson CNM.

Women and their midwife become a team working together towards a satisfying and safe birthing experience built on trust, respect and communication with each other. Certified nurse-midwives (CNM) are educated in two disciplines of nursing and midwifery and possess evidence of certification according to the requirements of the American College of Nurse Midwives. Certified nurse-midwives follow the standards of patient care set by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Nurse Midwives. This standard of care implements and maintains high quality obstetric care, so that women will receive all the same tests, ultrasounds, exams, pain options in labor that they would from a physician. The difference is that the care is given with a personalized midwifery flare, including longer face to face office visits and more expectant approach to labor management.
The professional relationship of an Obstetrician Gynecologist and a CNM working together is an example of a collaborative practice. “Collaborative practice” means joint communication and decision making behaviors between the OB/GYN and the CNM. This relationship is based on mutual trust and respect as well as professional responsibility and accountability. The main goal is to provide high quality services and develop safe, effective and satisfying patient care that result in excellent maternal and neonatal outcomes, improving public health and benefits the community.
Sherri Wiley-Benson Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) has been practicing as a nurse-midwife for 13 years with a Masters in Nursing Science (MSN). She has been married for 25 years. Sherri lives in the area with her husband, daughter, son and pets. Her hobbies are training animals and various year round outdoor activities, which promote health and wellness.

Four ways to help
your children achieve good dental health
(ARA) - While brushing your teeth at least twice a day, concentrating on brushing after every meal, flossing daily and visiting the dentist every six months should be common knowledge, there are still many misconceptions about dental health that both children and adults aren’t aware of. There are many children in American that face dental problems each year. More than a quarter of American children between the ages of 2 and 5, and half of children between 12 and 15 years old are affected by tooth decay, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC study also showed that children from lower-income families are even more at risk, with half of all children and two-thirds of adolescents aged 12 to 19 having had tooth decay. In five states with the largest income gaps - Florida, Texas, Arizona, Mississippi and Nevada - 43 percent of children in lower-income families had toothaches, decayed teeth, cavities, or bleeding gums, according to a study conducted by the Commonwealth Fund. Tooth decay affects more children in the U.S. than any other chronic infectious disease. Left untreated, tooth decay can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking and learning. To avoid potential problems with your children’s teeth, getting them off to a great start with their dental health is
imperative. With October being National Dental Hygiene Month, here are four dental tips from Kool Smiles to help your kids’ smiles stay healthy.
to long term pain and discomfort. Losing primary teeth early could lead to a higher risk of requiring orthodontic treatment.
Start early When the first baby tooth breaks through, you should be using infant toothpaste and a tooth brush to clean the tooth. It’s also recommended that before teeth even pop through, you should clean the gums with a damp cloth, gauze or even a clean finger. Once two teeth erupt through the gums touching each other, that’s when the flossing should begin. This is especially important with molars, which are typically closer together than front teeth.
Lead by example Brushing your teeth with your children watching you is a great way to start a healthy habit and show them the proper way to brush. Encourage your child, when old enough, to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Brushing timers and calendars are a fun way to make sure your family has a healthy routine. That will lead to easier dental visits for both you and your children.
Find a dentist As soon as your child turns 1 year old or their first tooth erupts, you should be seeking out a dentist. If you aren’t sure where to start, Kool Smiles may have a location near you. They are a leading dental health provider dedicated to expanding access to quality dental care for children and families in underserved communities. Learn more at www. mykoolsmiles.com.
By making regular dentist visits - for you and your children - you can help to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles for the whole family.
Even the baby teeth are important Many of your children’s primary teeth - also more commonly known as baby teeth - may be in their mouths until they get to around 12 years old, so ignoring issues until they get old enough to have permanent teeth can lead

Improve and Maintain
Wellness by Kristy Camille-McKiness MS, LCPC, ACS Deadlines, family, social engagements, and responsibilities occupy time daily. Despite demands and responsibilities inherent with parenthood, career, and personal goals, we often feel pressure to balance these elements while also maintaining a strong sense of self. Maintaining a healthy balance of self care and responsibility is an ongoing process, and one that can be improved by making incremental changes.
Spend time planning for self care as though you were planning for work deadlines or grocery shopping. Schedule self care time. Recognize when ‘enough’ is actually ‘too much.’ Keep boundaries with taking on additional responsibilities/ activities as much as possible.
There is no ‘I’ in ‘team.’ Maintain regular involvement in a hobby outside of work that allows you to connect with others; others benefit from you as much as you do from them. Remember that self care is an anchor for overall wellness. Slowly introduce these tips along with your own ideas for a long term wellness maintenance plan. Start supporting yourself in ways that support all that you do.
Forgive yourself with you make mistakes. Ask yourself whether the situation you are stressed about will be paramount in 5 years. If not, dedicate your energy elsewhere. (You certainly have plenty of other places for your energy to go!) Try an activity you have wanted to try, and enjoy the people you meet while doing so. This type of self care is an excellent way to extend your social support network. Identify your personal goals and incremental steps to

Because of busy schedules, sudden change in plans, and unforeseen predicaments, self care is often an accidental low priority. Despite personal and professional success, people frequently feel fatigued, stressed, and anxious. Including self care as a primary priority will not only improve sense of self, but can also improve work performance and overall stress management. Taking time for daily self care can regulate stress and anxiety management while also helping to maintain focus on other important activities. Although available time for self care may vary, prioritizing daily self care is essential. Introducing small incremental changes for self care will help to make long term changes for wellness management. Subtle changes are more
manageable, and therefore more likely to remain part of a schedule. The following tips will help you to improve self care maintenance:
