FAIR FUN! Release your inner child at this year's Kane County Fair Kane County’s biggest summer highlight will hit the local fairgrounds with big music acts, bright Midway lights and farm animals aplenty. The 2012 Kane County Fair will take place from Wednesday, July 18, through Sunday, July 22, at the 40-acre fairgrounds in St. Charles. And it’s going to be a blast. “I’ve been coming here since I was 5 years old,” says Jack Anderson, superintendent of the fairgrounds. “Some people come for the animals, some people come for the rides, some people come for the shows. Really, it’s a chance to just get out and walk around the grounds and enjoy yourself — have your ice cream cones or your bratwursts or whatever you like.” Nearly 80,000 people visited last year’s fair, despite a blistering heat wave that kept many others away, says Larry Breon, president of the fairgrounds for the last 18 years. This year, he expects that number to increase. And with a lineup of free music shows, live entertainment, Midway games, livestock
competitions, 4-H displays, and rodeos and demolition derbies, there’s something for everyone. “It’s unique,” says Floyd Brown, who took care of the fair’s marketing for 20 years before retiring last year. “Where else can you get an experience like you will find at the fair?”
Sows, cows and plows The Kane County Fair has a storied past that reaches back more than 140 years, says Breon. The fairgrounds have been located in four different places: the Aurora Downs, a long dormant racetrack; Aurora Central Park; Wing Park in Elgin; and finally the current grounds, which moved to St. Charles in the ’50s, Breon says. “The whole county was rural — everything was agriculture,” Breon says of days gone by. “The fair was where you got to go and see if there was anything new in the agricultural industry. And it was a social event.” It also was a way for farmers to compete
against in each other in different categories spanning livestock competitions and pie contests. “The fair essentially is kind of the world series or the playoffs for young farmers and farmers themselves,” Brown says. “The fair originally was designed — and still is able to do so — to bring their products to the farm and compete. Who raised the best pig or [cow]? Who raised the best corn or beans? … that’s what the fair’s all about, the competition. They worked all year on these products, and this is the culmination of all these activities.” The fair always was agriculturally driven, especially after 4-H — the largest youth development organization in the U.S. — became involved, Breon says, a 4-H’er himself who still has a soft spot for the program. And 4-H groups continue to drive a major portion of the fair. In fact, it is largely due to 4-H’s involvement that the fair still has such heavy agricultural involvement today, says Doris Braddock, a 4-H community worker with the Continued on page 4

University of Illinois Extension, Kane County. “I firmly believe that without 4-H, you would have very little livestock there [at the fair],” she says. But she notes that 4-H has come a long way — and so has the fair. “4-H is not just sows, cows and plows,” Braddock says. “It’s not all about agriculture any more. That is where our roots are, but it’s spread far beyond that now.” Today, 4-H’ers — kids ages 9 to 19 — take part in projects involving livestock, photography, childcare, art, engines, computers, robotics and more. The programs continually push science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and those involved do not have to live on a farm in order to join club. Nearly 400 kids participate in 20 different Kane County 4-H clubs — a credit that the organization is still thriving. “To their credit, dinosaurs didn’t adapt, and we don’t see many dinosaurs any more,” Breon says. “4-H adapted.” The fair has followed suit, adding Midway games, live musical acts and many of the other attractions that residents find compelling today, Brown says. “The mere thought of good food, seeing people you haven’t seen, seeing acts that you wouldn’t see otherwise, and coming away with a blue ribbon for something you’ve been working on the whole year, it’s just a tremendous event,” Brown says.
Bright future
4-H judging, exhibits & Blue Ribbon Sale are scheduled at the Kane County Fair.
This year’s Kane County Fair promises to house just as many activities and events as past years, Breon says — but with more refinement. The Miller Lite Sound Stage will offer free music all day, every day, with acts such as the Hillbilly Rockstarz and The Neverly Brothers performing for the passing crowds. “If you [hear] music you don’t care for, come back in two hours and it will be different,” Breon says. The kiddies will enjoy seeing lions, pig racing and duck racing, and magic shows — all free. Other complimentary acts found throughout the Midway will include the Miller Petting Zoo, Kiddy Land and more. Of course, there also will be opportunities to ride the Ferris wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl and other exciting rides offered on the Midway. Discount ride tickets will be available every day. Plus, the winners of the 29th annual Junior and Senior Talent Contest — geared toward individuals 21 and younger — will perform their feats in front of fairgoers. Those champions will represent Kane County at the state finals in Springfield in January 2013. But some of the biggest crowd-pleasing events will be professional bull riding, the rodeo and the demolition derby, Breon says. “It’s a little bit like Wrigley Field,” Breon says of the rodeo. “They just like to be out there.” “[And] people like to watch things crash,” he says, noting the demo derby always draws a big crowd.
