Aldermen, city staff honor Mayor DeWitte’s service By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Mayor Don DeWitte was the center of attention Wednesday night as aldermen, city staff and others paid tribute to his 20 years in public office. Ron Onesti of the Arcada Theatre hosted the event and thanked DeWitte for his Don DeWitte support of the iconic downtown entertainment venue. “I hung in there because of that guy down there,” Onesti said onstage, gesturing toward DeWitte in the front row. Photographs of DeWitte, including those of him as a kid and as mayor, were projected on either side of the stage as people took turns voicing their thanks and appreciation. Former 2nd Ward Alderman Betsy Penny recalled her
first meeting with DeWitte – he was then a young man with horn-rimmed glasses – and their time together on the St. Charles City Council. Of the three mayors she worked with, she said, she felt the freest to speak her mind with DeWitte, who always treated her with respect. “I do believe there is no one who has put their heart and soul more into this city than Don DeWitte,” Penny said. Longtime 4th Ward Alderman Jim Martin, who served on the council with DeWitte’s father and worked on many projects with his mother, said it should be no mystery why DeWitte served St. Charles so well. “He inherited it,” Martin said. Several speakers recognized DeWitte’s wife, Diane, as well. “Thanks, Diane, for sharing Don with us for all those years,” 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner said. Fifth Ward Aldermen Ed
Bessner and Maureen Lewis said DeWitte would encourage them to vote their conscience, vote with their gut. Lewis also read a letter from 2nd Ward Alderman Cliff Carrignan, who was unable to attend. Carrignan said DeWitte’s most visible contribution to the city is Red Gate Bridge, but his ability to keep the budget balanced without layoffs during the Great Recession was equally important. Public Works Director Mark Koenen, who spoke on behalf of the city’s department directors, said DeWitte didn’t choose to be mayor for the power, glamour, money or prestige. Koenen said he chose it “because of service.” DeWitte served two terms as mayor. He announced in the fall he wouldn’t seek a fourth term. On April 9, voters elected 3rd Ward Alderman Ray Rogina to succeed him. Rogina will be sworn into office next month.

Ill. House approves virtual charter school moratorium By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Legislation to slap a one-year hold on the creation of new online charter schools has cleared the Illinois House. The state House of Representatives passed Wednesday by a 80-36 vote legislation that would amend the state’s charter school law, putting a moratorium in place until April 1, 2014, “on the establishment of charter schools with virtual-schooling components” in most public school districts statewide. The legislation now is in the state Senate for consideration. The legislation also directs Illinois’ State Charter School Commission to use that time to craft “a report on the effect of virtual-schooling,” which would include evaluating student performance, online charter school costs and “issues with oversight.” Lawmakers also directed
the commission to “include policy recommendations for virtual-schooling.” The legislation was introduced by state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, a week ago. The legislation quickly gained support from Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including state Reps. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley, and Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville. Other local representatives supporting the bill included state Reps. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, and Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago. The legislation came in response to a proposal from Virtual Learning Solutions to open the Illinois Virtual Charter School at Fox River Valley. The online school was proposed to include students from 18 school districts in Kane, DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall, McHenry and Will counties, and would be funded by local school district funds, estimated at up to $8,000 per
student. Seventeen of the 18 school districts had rejected the proposal before the House voted on it, and the last district, Valley View School District 365U, was scheduled to vote on it Wednesday night. But without a moratorium, Virtual Learning Solutions can appeal those decisions to the State Charter School Commission. Lawmakers supporting the moratorium said they had concerns over a lack of regulation to govern virtual schools. Pritchard applauded the bill’s passage in the House, and said he believed the pause is needed to give time to “clarify standards” for virtual charter schools and investigate how much Virtual Learning Solutions proposed to charge per student. Despite those concerns, Pritchard said he and other supporters of the moratorium were not opposed to the concept of online charter schools.

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A new furniture store soon could open for business within the vacant former Wickes store on Randall Road. In March, Paragon Batavia – affiliated with Paragon Real Estate, an Oak Brookbased property management and acquisition company – purchased the former Wickes
store at 165 N. Randall Road, Batavia. The property has been vacant, aside from seasonal occupancy by stores selling Halloween-related merchandise, since Wickes went out of business in 2008. According to Kane County property records, Paragon paid $3.5 million for the store, buying it from Oak Park-based Northwest Boulevard Inc. A representative of Para-
gon did not reply to a message sent to him by the Kane County Chronicle concerning the transaction. However, according to a release posted online, the former Wickes store is slated to become one of several new stores Warren, Mich.-based Art Van Furniture intends to open in the Chicago area this year. The release states that Paragon has leased the building to Art Van Furniture, and the

Animal Control collections dip in March, officials say By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A month after touting improvements in the collection of money owed to Kane County’s Animal Control Department, county officials said animal control still has work to do to bring the department on to more firm financial footing. This week, the Kane County Health Department, which oversees the Animal Control Department, reported Animal Control collections had dipped in March to levels on par with those recorded the same month one year ago. In all, the Health Department reported collections of around $60,000 in March. That figure represented a dip from February, when department collections had spiked to around $80,000. In late 2012, before the department hired a billing manager, Animal Control was bringing in just $5,000 to $10,000 a month.
County officials have said Animal Control needs to collect about $70,000 to $75,000 a month to meet its annual budget and avoid needing payments from the county to pay for expenses such as a $93,000 annual mortgage payment on the Animal Control facility. Barbara Jeffers, executive director of the health department, and Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen had credited the February increase to the hiring of the billing manager and the collections ideas and tactics instituted since then. Some collections tactics employed to date have included robocalls and emails to remind pet owners of the requirement to vaccinate and register their pets. “In January and February, we could celebrate making progress,” Lauzen said. “But I don’t think we can take for granted good performance.” Lauzen and Jeffers said the Animal Control may soon participate in the Local Debt
Recovery Program, administered by the Illinois Comptroller’s Office. Under this program, unpaid fees can be collected by the comptroller’s office, which confiscates state payments such as income tax refunds or lottery winnings. Jeffers said the Health Department also is increasing “public education” efforts of the need to pay animal registration fees. At the same time, the County Board’s Public Health Committee also endorsed a proposal to reduce the fee schedule charged to municipalities when Animal Control is called to deal with an animal within a city or village. Jeffers said the reduced fees were intended to encourage the cities and villages to pay the fees and deal with the animals, rather than opting to not involve Animal Control. Some cities had complained the fees were too expensive.

Officials say storms bring possibility of flash flooding By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com

Forever Yogurt will open April 27 in downtown St. Charles.
ST. CHARLES
Forever Yogurt to open April 27 By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If it weren’t for a visit to see his twin daughters at the University of Colorado, David Brown might not be on the verge of opening a self-serve frozen yogurt shop in downtown St. Charles. The 55-year-old’s first exposure to the self-serve frozen yogurt concept happened on that trip, he said, recalling he entered the business confused. “You were on your own,” he said. But the concept won him over. Instead of watching and waiting for their dessert to be made, Brown said, customers had direct control to create the frozen treat they wanted, and they had various flavors to choose from. They paid by weight. When an opportunity to own a franchise of Chicago-based Forever Yogurt presented itself, the family talked about it, thought it was a fun idea and justified it as financial diversification. “We also thought it’d be a good addition to downtown St. Charles,” Brown said. Initially, he said, no real estate options excited him. But when he learned the first floor below Szechwan Restaurant would be divided into three spaces, he knew that’s where
“[My family and I] thought it’d be a good addition to downtown St. Charles.” David Brown
Spring rains have pounded the area so thoroughly in the past two days that flash flood and river flood warnings have been issued, officials said. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to continue through Friday, resulting in rising Fox River water levels that could cause flash flooding, said Don Bryant of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. “The Fox River [has] been in flood since about last Friday, and the National Weather Service predicts another foot before it crests,” Bryant said. “The other concern is flash flooding.” Another inch or two overnight could overwhelm creeks and drainage systems and cause some localized
flooding, Bryant said. In particular, local areas of repetitive flooding are in the Valley View area of St. Charles Township, he said. Bryant recommends that people anticipate flooding by having a “go-bag” with a change of clothes, toiletries, water, a credit card and medications ready to go. Those who are concerned about flooding should seek shelter with friends or relatives on higher ground. And if people experience flash flooding or a dangerous flooding situation and need to be evacuated, they should call 911. Bryant’s office, coordinating with the Red Cross, will either open a mass care shelter or find temporary lodging at a hotel. “The critical thing during this whole event is that people need to be aware of what’s going on around them,” Bry-
ant said. “If they are starting to see water coming up in these streets, start thinking about ‘How is this going to affect me?’ and have a plan on what to do.” Bill Morris, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service office in Romeoville said the gauging site of the Fox River is just below the dam in Algonquin, and it is above flood stage. “Right now, we are at 10.6 feet and flood stage is 9.5 feet,” Morris said. “Obviously, we are going to see some low-lying flood plain areas inundated.” Meteorologist Ed Fenelon said April has already re ceived 2.28 inches of rain. Normal rainfall for the whole month is 1.75 inches, he said. “We are looking for a lot of totals to come in the 3-inch to 4-inch range,” Fenelon said. “That is an entire month or more of rainfall in two days.”
Owner of Forever Yogurt he wanted Forever Yogurt to reside. The corner location has good visibility, nice lighting and a lot of parking nearby, he said, adding the downtown location has more character than a strip mall. Coincidentally, Brown’s shop is on the same block of his father’s former pharmacy, which was in the space now occupied by ZaZa’s Italian Steakhouse, he said. While his father dispensed medicine to make people well, Brown said he’ll be dispensing frozen yogurt to make people smile. Forever Yogurt will offer 16 flavors daily – it has as many as 70 – as well as 50-plus toppings, he said, adding there are “endless opportunities to be creative.” A grand opening is set for 4 p.m. April 27. The first 50 people in line will receive a year of free frozen yogurt – one cup of up to $5 each week for 52 weeks – and the second 50 in line will get free frozen yogurt that day, Brown said.

OPINIONS AP tests could alter movie-viewing plans There’s a new movie version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” coming out May 10. Because I’m a huge fan of that book, Leonardo DiCaprio and midnight movie releases, I’m considering going to see it at the first available showing, 12:01 a.m. on May 10. My mother isn’t so keen on this plan, mainly because she doesn’t like me being out past 10 p.m. on school nights. Another argument of hers is that my Advanced Placement tests are May 14, and she doesn’t want me out late the week beforehand. Jay Gatsby isn’t the only thing being affected by these tests. Some students are altering their post-prom plans to study for an AP test two days afterward, and – as with most tests – studying for them is causing slight hysteria. If you think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, think again. A friend of mine recently texted me saying, “It’s so hard I can’t even understand the homework; what is this,” with two sad emojis in response to the hard turn our AP French class has taken. AP French Language is one of the two AP tests I will be taking this year. The test is conveniently scheduled on the same day as AP Government. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the AP program, that will amount to eight hours of near-continuous college level test-taking. So, why am I willingly submitting myself to eight hours of filling in bubbles and having to record fake French conversations? Because AP tests count for college credits. Most schools will count a score of 4 or a 5 (out of a possible 5) as credit at their college. This means that if you get a good score on AP English, you may be able to “test out,” and not have to take an English
A DAY IN COURT Courtney Phelan credit freshman year. This also means that if you take – and pass – every AP test available to you, you can start college as a sophomore, having gotten general education credits out of the way in high school. Personally, I will be entering college as a freshman, hopefully with a credit or two under my belt. The AP language tests are notoriously hard, and I think the only thing I’ve really learned in government this semester is the political agenda of the kid who sits in the corner. However, if I don’t take the tests, I know I’ll beat myself up over it later. See, a four on the AP language test gets me eight credits at Saint Mary’s. To minor in a language at SMC, you must have 12 credits. The possibility of getting myself so close to an extra degree is why I’m submitting myself to four hours of testing after four hours of testing. I know that the school has promised us double test-takers a time for lunch, and I would sincerely appreciate it if they arranged for the lunch to be pizza. I know it’ll be tough, but for me and the other high school students who take AP classes and tests, it’ll be worth it. As long as it doesn’t interfere with me seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in 3-D.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR People need to be aware of autism To the Editor: During National Autism Awareness Month, which is April, many parents of children on the spectrum are hearing about new statistics of 1 in 50 children that are now being diagnosed with autism. People need to be aware of the ever increasing amount of children and adults with autism who need understanding and help to have a happy and productive life, when such things as medical insurance, an education, job training and housing for people with developmental disabilities – to name a few things – are nowhere near meeting the demand

and needs of an exploding population of people with autism. With that in mind, Autism Speaks is looking for advocates in congressional districts in the state to – at first – call on congressmen and women to advocate for federal legislation that is important to families with children and adults on the autism spectrum, and then eventually call on state legislators to promote and advocate state-based initiatives in the future. District advocates also would be in charge of grass-roots development that would seek to improve autism awareness and support to help stregthen education
and services for people with autism through their efforts in getting involved in the community. We are presently looking for district advocates to be part of our “Autism Congress” in the 1st, 2nd, 8th, 14th and downstate legislative districts. If you are interested, have experience with working in your community, have talked with your legislative representatives in the past – or want to in the future – and have a connection with autism, please email me at mbaker721@comcast.net to show your interest and to talk further. What to do when you’re looking to unload some of your stuff By BRENDA SCHORY

n her 48 years of marriage, Lynne Burtner moved 18 times. “He was a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, so we moved around a lot,” Burtner, 68, said. “Every time we moved, we got a bigger house.” They bought their last house together 13 years ago in St. Charles Township. It had five bedrooms and five baths on two acres, Burtner said. Then they got divorced, and Burtner was burdened by a big, empty house, a huge yard and a koi pond. “I loved that house, but the maintenance was just exorbitant,” Burtner said. “I sold it last year and moved to a townhouse. I went from a 6,000-square-foot house to 2,000 square feet.” Her sons, ages 46 and 43, were not interested in most of her stuff. “They said, ‘Oh mom, we don’t need anything. We don’t want anything,’ ” Burtner said. “I said, ‘Please, take what you want. I’m going to get rid of it.’ ” And so Burtner joined the ranks of many who are downsizing and finding their adult children and grandchildren aren’t interested in taking anything that’s being offered. “They’re not into silver and crystal and china,” Burtner said. “I had two sets of china, Haviland and Rosenthal. I had Waterford crystal. Kids in their 20s, 30s and 40s today – they don’t want that stuff. … And all of a sudden, you are put in this position and you wonder, ‘Why do I have all this stuff?’ ” • • • The National Association of Senior Move Managers spokeswoman Mary Kay Buysse said members are professional organizers who specialize in helping senior citizens downsize and move. “This aging population is the next frontier,” Buysse said. “Members in our asso-

ciation have a code of ethics and training specifically for working with older adults.” She said Depression-era adults, who have spent 40 years collecting things, are especially in shock when they find out nobody wants it. “It’s a different universe out there,” Buysse said. “The Depression-era generation grew up with nothing, so to accumulate these collections gave them a great deal of satisfaction and personal esteem.” Association members and others working in the professional organizing field find creative ways to reduce such collections, Buysse said. Burtner relied on help from Simblissity, a company founded by certified professional organizers Donelle Du-
vall and Mary Beth Wright of St. Charles, to get much of her things sold at an estate sale. “We seem to be getting many clients from people who are downsizing,” Wright said. “Their kids are much more casual and not doing place settings with dinner parties; they are not using fine china. That is what we are finding. Even the consignment shops do not want them – Waterford and those types of things – because they are not selling.” Bobbi Alderfer, whose Geneva interior design company, Lifestyle Design, also helps with downsizing, said she also has found the same situation while working with retirees moving into smaller living quarters. “Their kids will take a few pieces,” Alderfer said.
“They’re not like we were – we would take anything anyone would give us for free. … It’s the phenomenon of not passing it down to kids.” A frequent solution is an estate sale. Often, the leftovers find their way to the twice-a-year rummage sale that Alderfer runs at her church, the United Methodist Church in Geneva. “We see tremendous amounts of furniture and collectibles and dishes and glassware,” Alderfer said. “It makes for a great sale. They don’t know what else to do with it. It’s an amazing amount of stuff every six months.” A garage sale, Alderfer said, is a lot of work. Donating it outright creates a tax write-off. ••• A garage sale is exactly where Elsa Reinke is starting out with her major downsizing operation. Reinke’s Geneva house on Fulton Street has six bedrooms, five baths, two offices, a two-and-a-half car garage
with living quarters above, two kitchens, an art collection, two sets of china and lots of tchotchkes. “My five children are all grown and married and engaged and away at school,” said Reinke, 56. “My husband passed away in December, and especially now that it’s just me – the maintenance, the bills – I’m downsizing to simplify my life.” Her house is 7,000 square feet, and, with the help of Simblissity, the process is being done in stages, beginning with a two-day garage sale April 26 and 27, and an estate sale to follow later. Simblissity is seeking buyers for her art collection. Reinke said the company did all the research on the value and authenticity of her pieces. “Every time I want to keep something, I think of where I’m going and I say, ‘I don’t want this lifestyle anymore,’ ” Reinke said. “When my house has a buyer, that is when I’ll find my new home. I am open to the Lord – I’m wide open. Things will fall where they may when they should.”

Music legends Chuck Berry, Little Richard battle it out
would be the headliner and Richard would open. Richard found out about this billing after he arrived. “Excuse me!” he said, after hearing that he was to open the show. “Son, the king of rock ’n‘ roll don’t open for nobody. You better change that in a hurry,” he said. I went to Chuck and explained the situation to him, thinking that he would see it in his heart to flip-flop the bill and save us from an uncomfortable situation. “You wouldn’t ask Elvis to open the show, what makes you think that this king would do it?” he said ironically. “There is a reason they did the ‘Hail! Hail! Rock ’n‘ Roll’ movie about me!” Chuck flew in the day of the show by himself, rented a car at the airport, and got to the gig on his own.

I would imagine if you would ask the question, “Who is the king of rock ‘n’ roll?” most people would do the quiver-lip thing and respond, “Elvis Presley, thank you very much.” But I guess it depends who you are talking to. Try and ask that question to rock ’n‘ roll pioneers Chuck Berry or Little Richard, and you may get a music lesson you will never forget. I never did. When it comes down to it, no singer has sold more records or is more of a largerthan-life pop culture phenomenon than the boy from Tupelo, Miss., who is commonly referred to as “The King.” Although Berry’s duckwalk style and Richard’s animated piano-playing antics are featured on almost every retrospective of the beginnings of rock music, they are no match for the swivel-hipped charm, timeless music and internationally worshipped good looks of Elvis Presley. I was putting together a very cool Rock ’n‘ Roll Hall of Fame show with Chuck Berry and Little Richard, two guys who were there when country and western collided with rhythm, blues and gospel to make a “new sound” that swept the world of music, and became what disc jockey Alan Freed coined as “rock ’n‘ roll.” But who would open this show and who would occupy the coveted headliner spot on the bill? For me the answer was simple. Berry was $5,000 more than Richard, so Berry

In the end, the crowd wins the competition • KING OF ROCK Continued from page 19 Richard, on the other hand, arrived with an entourage of 24 people, required four limousines, six dressing rooms and 25 hotel rooms for two nights. Chuck only had one requirement: I was to supply a musical trio that would serve as his backup band. When I asked about a rehearsal, he said, “There ain’t no rehearsal.” He didn’t have music charts, he wouldn’t even give me a song list. “Tell the band to buy my greatest hits album and learn it. When I raise my guitar they play, when I lower the guitar they stop. Here is your tempo (as he stomped his foot to give the beat). I was thinking to myself, “Yeah, this is normal!” I held my ground and Little Richard opened the show. He definitely was not happy about it, and his mind was set on getting the last laugh. The opener for these shows usually plays 45 minutes or so. The show began at 7 p.m. so by 7:45 p.m., I was stage-left waiting to take Richard off and get Chuck’s equipment on in time for an 8:30 start. 8 ... 8:10 ... 8:20 ... OK, NOW I see how this is going! Richard was waving a bible in his hand musically preaching and doing nine verses of “Tutti Fruiti”! So by now, Chuck was getting upset. He tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to follow him to the stage. With Richard doing a third encore of “Lucille,” Chuck pointed to the floor as he put one foot on the stage and said, “My contract says I go on at 8:30 for an hour. See my foot? It’s 8:30 and your time starts now.” “I’m doing the best I can, Chuck,” I said. “You see what’s going on here! Your fans will
be the ones cheated. Please, Chuck, a true king wouldn’t treat his loyal subjects that way!” At the end of his next song, I walked on stage with a microphone to congratulate A true “king” of rock ‘n’ roll, a title Richard confidently accepted. We never switched out equipment faster than we did that day. “Ladies and gentlemen, another ‘king of rock ‘n’ roll’, Mr. Chuck Berry!” I shouted. To say the band I put together for Chuck was nervous is an understatement. To make matters even more stressful, every time the band made a simple mistake, Chuck stopped the song and made the guys start over – in front of the packed house. He did “Maybelline” three times that night as the small band was reduced from three gigging professionals to three first-year music students. Chuck wound up doing more than the hour he originally said he was contracted to do, and way more than he threatened to cut his show down to. So, in the end, the crowd got two great performances with two headliners (the point Richard was making), even though I lost a little more hair in the interim. A disappointing thing about all of this was that neither Chuck nor Richard was willing to take a photo with me. Their contracts were very specific, stating no photos or autographs, and Richard’s bow-tie wearing security force made that eminently clear to me. As I went to give Chuck an expected “thank you,” he said, “What you said about cheating the fans hit me hard, and it made sense. Grab your camera, let’s take a picture.” “Whoa!” I thought to myself. I then went to Richard’s camp to thank him. He came
out and actually apologized! “Sorry you got caught up in that mess,” he said. “That’s a battle that’s been happenin’ for a long time.” So I thought, “What the heck, I’ll ask him for a photo.” “Well you got that comin’,” he said. “Another score,” I thought. Richard posed with me and my staff, and actually kind of leaned his face onto the side of my forehead. I left the room feeling pretty good about myself. I went back by the stage and thanked people for coming. I must have said goodbye to several hundred people, each one giving me what I thought was an appreciative stare. They all did the double-take thing as they looked at me, and because I hosted the show, I was sure it was because I was the big-time producer who crafted this memorable evening for them. It wasn’t until the very last person, a young girl about 12 years old, who pointed out the real reason why the throngs of people were looking at me with such love and admiration. “What’s on your head?” she asked. Apparently, when Richard took the picture with me, a large clump of his light brown pancake makeup stuck to my forehead, a souvenir I wasn’t planning on receiving. “Oh, that’s what everybody was looking at,” I muttered. Quite the hand I wound up with today ... two kings and a joker!

GENEVA BASEBALL
Injuries taking toll on Vikings By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Just about everything went right for Geneva pitcher Andy Honiotes during his junior season last year. So far, his senior season is proving to be anticlimactic by comparison. Honiotes hasn’t felt right, physically, this spring, and his status for the rest of the season is unclear after leaving Tuesday’s game against St. Charles North in the second inning with continued elbow discomfort. Honiotes said a follow-up appointment with Dr. Kevan Ketterling of Fox Valley Orthopedics revealed irritation in his ulnar nerve. “I haven’t really felt good since late August, to be honest with you,” Honiotes said. “I kind of tweaked my elbow at the back end of summer season. I was doing physical therapy for my elbow but I feel that might have been a misdiagnosis or they didn’t catch it right away because it hasn’t really gotten better at all. I’ve just been trying to pitch through it this season and then [Tuesday] I kind of got to the point where I didn’t feel like I was helping my team by trying to go out there.” Honiotes, a Miami recruit, could return to the mound by early May, but that might not be the case. “Right now it’s about two weeks I’m supposed to be out, but I spoke to [Geneva coach Matt Hahn] and other people that I’m not going to come back unless I feel 100 percent,” Honiotes said. “I feel like I have a lot more baseball ahead of me and it’s not worth trying to come back too soon from an injury my senior year of high school. I’m just going to do everything I can to get back as soon as possible.” As a junior, Honiotes went 7-0 with a 1.01 ERA and 74 strikeouts compared to 17 walks. Just about all of his statistics have been well off that pace this season, including a jarring 0-4 record. Honiotes, whose fastball

was in the 90 mph range in the past, has been about 10 mph off that velocity so far this season. The loss of their ace righthander moves to the top of a crowded list of challenges for this year’s Vikings, many coming on the medical front. Another Division-I bound right-hander, Jordan Touro, has seen limited action after dislocating a finger in the Vikings’ season opener. Touro, though, is rounding back into form, and should help keep the Vikings’ pitching staff afloat alongside fellow starting candidates Tony Landi, Max Novak and Brock Chenier.
Geneva’s Andy Honiotes pitches during a 2011 game against Batavia. Additionally, key position players Mitch Endriukaitis and Jake Weede have gone down with injuries. Endriukaitis, the team’s starting third baseman and a three-year varsity performer, might be out for the season with a hand injury suffered earlier this month against Metea Valley. The personnel challenges appear to be taking a toll on the Vikings, who fell to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in Upstate Eight Conference River play with Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to St.
Charles North. Wednesday’s scheduled second game of the teams’ three-game series was rained out. The Vikings are coming off a strong 2012 season in which they were the top-seeded team in their sectional before being upset by Bartlett in a regional semifinal. “Our message to them [Tuesday] night was just keep competing, keep working hard,” Hahn said Wednesday afternoon. “We’re a good baseball team and, at some point, we’re going to get healthy. Things are going to click, and hopefully we’re peaking at the right time of the season. “[Postseason] seeds don’t mean a whole heck of a lot. If you went by the seeds, we should have been playing for a state title last season.” Honiotes said he plans to work with an occupational therapist in the coming weeks. He said he has “full confidence” in his teammates and thinks better days are on the horizon for the Vikings. “I feel that we’re going to press through this, and I’m going to do everything I possibly can to help,” Honiotes said. “Even if I can’t pitch, there are other things I can do to help, but I feel like we’re going to turn this around.”

Bears like McClellin’s versatility By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – Pick a sport, any sport. Shea McClellin probably can play it. Pick a position, any position. McClellin probably can play that, too. For as long as the Bears’ defensive end can remember, he has been a versatile athlete. “Oh yeah, definitely,” McClellin said Wednesday after the Bears wrapped up the second day of voluntary minicamp at the Walter Payton Center. “Basketball, I played one through five. “I could play anything. At any sport, really.” Hmm. The Cubs might be interested. Until then, McClellin is focused on helping the Bears. And the Bears are focused on collecting more players like McClellin. Although the Bears have not implemented major changes to their 4-3 defensive scheme since new coordinator Mel Tucker took over for Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli, flexibility has been a buzzword at
Shaw Media file photo
The Bears’ Shea McClellin hits Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck last season in Nashville. Halas Hall. That could affect how the Bears approach next week’s draft, in which they have the No. 20 overall selection and five picks total. Bears general manager Phil Emery singled out McClellin as a model for future selections. McClellin was Emery’s first-ever draft choice at No. 19 overall last season. At the time, the pick drew scrutiny because McClellin was viewed by many draft observers as more of an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. But the Bears plugged
in McClellin as a defensive end with his hand on the ground, and he responded with 2 ½ sacks and 14 quarterback pressures in 14 games as a rookie. “We want players that transcend schemes,” said Emery, who also could trade down from No. 20 to gain extra picks. “Those are the best players to get, that have the most flexibility. … “The reason Shea is important player and the reason we picked him where we did was because he had versatility as a player. He can do a lot of things. We’re looking for those types of players: Players that are high-end, dynamic athletes that can do a lot of things.” McClellin wants to take a leap forward as a second-year player. He said he shed fat and gained five to seven pounds of muscle this offseason, which now puts him at 258 pounds. At that playing weight, McClellin could remain in his role as a pass-rushing defensive end or become a rover on defense who could create matchup problems. He said he has worked exclusively at de-

fensive end so far this spring but was willing to fill any role. “You never know,” said McClellin, who played both linebacker and defensive end during college at Boise State. “I could be doing something else, but for now I’m playing D-end.” According to his coaches, he is playing the position quite well. McClellin will “get what he earns,” as Tucker said Wednesday, and that very well could mean more snaps on defense. The Bears’ group of defensive ends also includes Peppers, Corey Wootton, Turk McBride, Cheta Ozougwu and
Aston Whiteside. It’s possible that Israel Idonije could return to the Bears, but for now he remains an unrestricted free agent. Idonije registered 7 ½ sacks opposite Peppers last season, and McClellin could help to fill the veteran’s void if he does not return. Tucker seems to think that McClellin is capable. “He’s athletic,” Tucker said. “He’s got pass-rush ability. He’s very conscientious about getting better each and every day. “I saw the ability on tape, and I see it here on the practice field. I’m very encouraged.”

Chadd Krist leads the Cougars with a .412 average in 17 at-bats and is considered the second-best defensive catcher in the Cubs’ organization by Baseball America.
Krist proving preseason prestige Chadd Krist earned preseason prestige for his work behind the plate, as Baseball America called him as the second-best defensive catcher in the Cubs’ organization. Scouts must have been burying that sterling scouting report on Krist’s bat. Entering tonight’s series opener against visiting Quad Cities, the platooning backstop leads the Cougars with a .412 average in 17 at-bats. Krist would like to think he knows what’s coming when he steps into the box. Truth is, he might feel so steeled in his skill in calling games that his head feels clearer than normal when he’s hitting. “I’m just going to the plate just looking to get a good pitch to drive,” Krist said. “I’m getting a lot of good pitches to hit right now. That’s not always the case, but right now, things
VIEWS Kevin Druley just seem to be going my way, so I’ll ride that as long as I can.” That task figures to be tougher considering the Cougars began the season with three catchers. Willson Contreras – the player ranked ahead of Krist on Baseball America’s defensive proficiency list – has played in seven games to Krist’s five. Yaniel Cabezas, who broke spring training with the Cougars, is on the disabled list. On the surface, Krist enjoys an inherent advantage. The organization converted Contreras from third base to catcher before the 2012 season, while Krist has been catching throughout his career. The Cubs drafted him in
the ninth round of the 2012 draft out of Cal, where Krist set a school record with 65 career doubles and flirted with a .400 average with runners in scoring position in 2011. Keeping such success on par with his defense remains the goal, and the organization is encouraged. “He’s got that little bit of leadership quality in him that you want to see in a catcher,” said Cougars manager Mark Johnson, a former major league catcher who debuted with the White Sox in 1998. “You know, he’s a headsy kind of guy. He knows what’s going on back there.” Contreras caught 64 games with Short-A Boise last season, and is one of 19 Cougars to appear at that level in 2012. Krist also counts among that number, although he spent just 16 games in the Northwest
League. After batting .328 to begin his time in Boise, Krist ascended to then-Midwest League affiliate Peoria. A 40game stint with the Chiefs provided a good base, but still left Krist less comfortable with the current Cougars pitching staff. He worked to catch up in spring training. “Catching a lot of bullpens, working with them in the pen and before the game and a lot of early work,” Krist said. “A lot of communication between the pitchers and catchers.” Krist called that strategy “pretty universal.” If his April success at the plate transfers just as smoothly, he’ll take it.

But Minnesota, which started recruiting Bergren when he represented the Upstate Eight Conference as an outfielder at the annual Stevenson Showcase in 2010, won the recruiting battle. Bergren, who bats and throws left-handed, played in 34 games for the Gophers as a freshman and led the team with a .364 batting average, albeit in just 55 at-bats. Still, a lot of those plate appearances were important. For example, he was 5 for 11 in a series with Big Ten rival Michigan State. This season, Bergren has two hits in 18 at-bats. “This season’s a little bit slower for me than last year,” he said. “Last year, I got some opportunities because of some injuries in the outfield. This year, nobody’s really gone down, and everybody’s been playing well.” Minnesota is 23-13 overall and 7-2 in the Big Ten. The Gophers are gearing up for what they hope will be an extended postseason run. “We think with the pitching staff we have this year, we have a pretty strong
tournament team,“ Bergren says. “It really hinges on the offense. … We’re pretty confident right now.” Senior outfielder Andy Henkemeyer is hitting .338 with 21 RBIs in 33 games. His graduation will leave an opening in the outfield that Bergren hopes to fill next season. “I’m really hoping it will be my year,” he said. He plans on honing his skills this summer by playing in the Northwoods League, a wooden-bat league for college players. Bergren said he misses the break from baseball that football provided, though he doesn’t regret his decision to focus on one sport. “It’s still kind of weird to just keep playing baseball,” he said. “There’s nothing to break up the monotony of hitting and fielding and throwing.” Except, of course, his studies. He’s majoring in organic chemistry. “I chose a pretty tough major, so the classes are pretty challenging,” Bergren says. “My time-management skills have certainly been tested.” He said he’s enjoying the challenge and is considering pursuing a doctorate in the field. When he actually has some free time, playing guitar is one of the leisure activities he enjoys, which ought to please his famous former neighbor, Prince.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Jeremy Kenny sparred in the Kaneland wrestling room as a high school student in the early 2000s. He often remained after workouts, a practice that helped pave the way to Kenny getting his name painted on the wall. Every Kaneland athlete to match or exceed 20 victories in a season is so honored, and what Jeremy Kenny many current Knights liked most about Kenny was that he seemed to forget. As a longtime assistant, Kenny torqued and tangled with wrestlers as if he were still sporting a black and white singlet, working toward a bid to the state meet in Champaign. Don’t expect any less involvement with Kenny close to taking over as head coach. He recently was nominated to Kaneland School District 302 as the successor to Monty Jahns, and awaits board approval later this month. “It’s kind of like second-nature as far as transitioning into head coach,” Kenny said. “I’ve been so involved in the process and Monty really allowed me to do that. We worked together, we ran the program together, so the transition to being the head [coach] will be just what I’ve been doing.”
Kenny, a four-year varsity wrestler at Kaneland, graduated in 2004. Competing at 171 pounds, he qualified for the Class AA state meet as a senior and finished the season 39-8. He walked on at Northern Illinois for three seasons before beginning as a volunteer coach at Kaneland in 2006. He officially joined the staff as an assistant the following winter, and is in his first year as a fulltime Kaneland security guard. Kenny meshed well with Jahns, another former Knight who cited an increased workload at Nicor Gas in his decision to leave the program. He also endeared himself to the Knights, namely senior Dan Goress. The reigning 2A state champ at 145 pounds was a frequent Kenny sparring partner. “Hard worker at whatever he does,” Goress said. “He’s that competitive guy where if you’re playing checkers, he’s going to do whatever he can to win. If it’s wrestling, you can only imagine how hard he goes. He just doesn’t stop no matter how tired you or him is.” Kenny plans to apply the same intensity at his alma mater, which enjoyed multiple state placers for the first time since 1993 this season. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last few years in our transition into a credible 2A program,” Kenny said. “I’m just looking to build individual success as well as bring the team confidence and team aspect to Kaneland wrestling.”

For the first dozen years of his life, Jake Bergren’s biggest claim to fame was that he lived down the street from Prince in Chanhassen, Minn. These days, the former St. Charles North baseball and football standout is making a name for himself as a sophomore on the University of Minnesota baseball team. Bergren spent his early elementary years in Chanhassen, a suburb of Minneapolis. “I started playing sports for the first time up here,” he recalled. “That’s where it all started. I played hockey for about five years. I started baseball up here. … I still have memories of the hockey days.” Bergren believes playing hockey at a young age helped him develop a competitive streak that served him well after his family moved to St. Charles. At North, he helped the North Stars achieve unparalleled success on the diamond and the gridiron. The baseball team went 35-4 his junior season and he was the quarterback on a North football team that reached the Class 7A quarterfinals in 2009 before bowing out to eventual state runners-up Glenbard West. His success in both sports left him in a quandary about which to pursue at the next level. “Back then, I wasn’t sure which I was going to choose,” Bergren said. “It really came down to what opportunities I

Even at its most staged, the anxieties “Disconnect” conveys are deep, real and worth expressing. Alexander Skarsgard (left) and Paula Patton (right) portray a couple in the film.
‘Disconnect:’ A broad-brush for broadband By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post The absorbing, if hysterically pitched “Disconnect” is an of-the-moment tragedy of manners, a cautionary tale of the Internet age centered around a roundelay of occasionally intersecting story lines that finally culminate in dramatic individual catharses, each staged with melodramatic, too-tidy overstatement. If this strikes you as vaguely familiar, you’re right: “Disconnect” is a computer “Crash.” That “Disconnect” shares such significant DNA with the 2004 Oscar winner is a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. Admittedly, screenwriter Andrew Stern and director Henry Alex Rubin have crafted a smart, engaging film that instantly draws viewers into its disparate but tenuously related worlds. There’s the ramshackle, warren-like house that serves as headquarters for a pornographic website specializing in underage performers; the pristine suburban home of an upper class family whose teenage son is being mercilessly bullied online; and the similarly well-appointed environs of a professional couple who are channeling grief over a recent loss
If you go Stars: Two and a half. Rating: R. Contains sexual content, some graphic nudity, profanity, violence and drug use – some involving teens. Runs: 115 minutes. by escaping into virtual poker games and chat rooms. As “Disconnect” illustrates, the Web has become a mass means of distraction, deception and even destruction, as vulnerable people increasingly share their most intimate secrets, only to be manipulated by the predators who lurk behind every login. It’s difficult to imagine that anyone needs to be reminded of these dangers, but the filmmakers nonetheless succeed in infusing “Disconnect” with credible suspense, despite its often painfully obvious observations about technology and society. Handsomely shot and judiciously edited, the film benefits from a superlative cast, including Max Thieriot as a teasingly come-hither teen cyber-sex worker named Kyle, and Andrea Riseborough as an ambitious TV news reporter who per-
suades him to help her with an explosive story about Internet sex sites. Jason Bateman is a preoccupied attorney whose son (played with heartbreaking melancholy by Jonah Bobo) embarks on an ill-advised IM flirtation with a contemporary, and Frank Grillo plays a cyber-security expert who inadvertently propels a couple (Paula Patton and Alexander Skarsgard) to take a case of identity theft into their own hands. (Special mention goes out to fashion designer Marc Jacobs, who makes a startlingly effective screen debut as Kyle’s Fagin-esque father figure.) It comes as no surprise whatsoever when some of these vignettes end in tears, and Rubin loses his heretofore sure footing with “Disconnect’s” climax, an overwrought, slow-mo aria that takes the film from a convincing, atmospheric thriller into eye-roll-inducing soap opera. Still, as a present-day problem picture – part of a long line of films dealing with everything from urban crime and juvenile delinquency to marijuana and adolescent sex – “Disconnect” takes its deserved place within a time-honored genre. Even at its most staged and false, the anxieties it conveys are deep, real and worth expressing.
Dear Abby: My husband and I
come with 100 percent, money-back guarantees. What they need in order to thrive is parents who love each other and them, and who are willing to put forth the time and energy to raise them. Please do not allow the dysfunction you have seen in your work to influence your decision. I would caution you about one thing, however. Having a child because of pressure from your in-laws would be a poor reason to have children. Dear Abby: I’m at a crossroads. I have been married for 15 years and have two children. I love my wife and have been content with this life for a long time. However, for years I have felt like something was missing. I recently become close friends with a man who is in the same situation. One day he confided that he is gay and has known it for more than 10 years.
As our friendship has developed I have come to realize that I’m gay as well. It was a struggle to finally admit this to myself, but I accept that it’s the truth. My friend and I have been exploring our sexuality together, and he says he is happier than he has been in years. Both of us love our wives and children; however, we desperately need to fulfill our own needs as well. Do you have any advice on the best way to move forward? – In A Difficult Situation Dear In: You say you have known for years that something was missing. Well, it is possible that your wives have felt the same way, and may have blamed themselves for it. That’s why it is important for you and your friend to explain everything to them honestly. Your wives should contact the Straight Spouse Network, which has been mentioned in my column many times. It can be reached at www.straightspouse.org. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.
Take these steps to combat burning mouth syndrome Dear Doctor K: For months, my mouth has been painfully burning and tingling. What could be causing my symptoms? Are there any treatments for it? Dear Reader: Several conditions can cause a burning sensation in the mouth. Some nutritional deficiencies – particularly of B vitamins, iron and zinc – can cause it. These problems can be detected by simple blood tests. Medicines that cause the mouth to become dry (due to decreased saliva production) can result in mouth irritation. There are too many of these medicines to list here, but check a reliable website that provides information about drugs and their side effects. Sometimes a person can develop an allergy to dentures and related adhesive creams, toothpastes or mouthwashes that produce irritation of the tissues of the mouth. You can experiment by seeing what happens when you stop using one of these potential allergy triggers (and substituting a different brand). Conditions that damage small nerves, such as diabetes, can cause mouth pain. So, can mouth infections, particularly with
ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff fungus (yeast). There also is a condition called burning mouth syndrome (BMS) that produces a burning – sometimes scalding – sensation on the lips and tongue and throughout the mouth. In BMS, the pain is present for at least some part of every day, the tissues of the mouth look normal (not irritated or inflamed) to the doctor or dentist, and the conditions I have mentioned already are not present. Doctors don’t know what causes BMS. Some think it is a psychiatric condition, but I’m dubious about that. I think that when doctors don’t understand the cause of a person’s symptoms, we sometimes think (and say to our patient) that the symptoms are just imaginary. That may make us feel better, but it doesn’t make the patient feel so great. And if there really is a problem that we’re ignoring, we have failed. Now, if you told me that you were having pain because a small lizard was chewing on the
roof of your mouth, I might start to suspect a psychiatric problem. I’d bet that BMS is caused by subtle damage of the main nerve that detects pain in the mouth, the trigeminal nerve. Indeed, one study provides support for that theory. Low doses of tricyclic drugs or certain medicines often used for seizures may help reduce the symptoms. So may certain pain-killing medicines and creams applied directly to the parts of the mouth that hurt. There are steps you can take to reduce your mouth discomfort. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends the following to keep symptoms at bay: • Sip water frequently. • Suck on ice chips. • Avoid irritating substances. These include hot, spicy foods; mouthwashes that contain alcohol; and high-acid foods such as citrus fruits and juices. • Chew sugarless gum. • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

Dr. Wallace: I’m attending a community college. I will be transferring to a four-year university in the fall. The only thing standing in my way is a certain math class. I am currently enrolled in this class and have no problems with completing the required homework. However, when it comes to taking a test, I completely choke. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to help me. – Nameless, Orange, Calif. Dear Nameless: Choking on a test is a common problem. Some students, no matter how well they know the material, put so much psychological pressure on themselves they can’t access this knowledge effectively at test time. I suggest that you make an appointment with your math instructor to discuss what can be done to help you overcome this stressful situation. Knowing the teacher is on your side and not out to get you, may ease your fears and let you perform up to capacity on the test. Believe me, the teacher has as much interest in your success as you do. Contact me again after you take your next math test and let me know the result. Dr. Wallace: You once wrote that a parent should not choose a child’s friends. But when a 14-year-old boy wrote saying that his father disapproved of his friends and forced him to find new friends, you agreed with his father. It seems like you are contradicting yourself. I must say that I disagree with the boy’s father, and I’m disappointed that you agreed with him. Good friends should stay together and not be separated by the whim of a misguided parent. Just because this boy’s friends are in trouble with the law for sell-
’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace ing drugs doesn’t mean that these friends don’t have good qualities, too. It also doesn’t mean that these friends will pressure the boy into selling drugs. What makes you think that this boy can’t think for himself? – P.J., Gary, Ind. Dear P.J.: Parents should not choose a child’s friends, but they have the responsibility to stop the child from hanging around kids who are likely to be bad influences. Learning that your son’s friends are dealing drugs is enough to make most parents alarmed. I back the action of this boy’s parents. I’m sure some juvenile drug dealers do have good qualities, but that isn’t the point. Criminal behavior by a teen overpowers his good qualities. When this occurs, wise parents intervene. Dr. Wallace: I just finished reading the letter from the adopted girl who was extremely happy with her adoptive parents and didn’t want to find out who her birth mother is. That’s all well and good. I, too, am adopted and love my adopted parents, but I want to search for my birth mother. I want to obtain a medical history for myself and any children I might have. I also want to meet my birth mother and make her a part of my life. – Nameless, Athens, Ga. Dear Nameless: More power to you! I wish you the best of luck on your quest. What’s important is to have the love and support of your adoptive parents no matter what you decide to do. • Email Dr. Robert Wallace at rwallace@ galesburg.net.

are contemplating starting a family. When I was younger I wanted children, but over the years my personal experiences have caused trepidation. Because of divorce and the custody battles of my older siblings, I know the amount of blood, sweat and tears that go into children. I work in the field of social services. Every day I am confronted with families who struggle with more children than they can care for and with behavioral and emotional problems. Frankly, it has turned me off. I am terrified of all the “what ifs.” I can’t talk to my family because I don’t want to tell them they have created part of my problem. My in-laws can’t understand why we don’t have children yet. My husband keeps insisting “everything will be fine.” I love him deeply and he would make an amazing father. I can’t picture our future without children, but the fear of actually having them brings me to tears. Can you help? – Scared To Take The Next Step Dear Scared: Children don’t

When side tricks have dried up
CELEBRITY CIPHER
Alija Izetbegovic, the first president of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said, “We play an active role and try to influence our destiny; we have our own trump cards and we use them.” So far this week, we have been looking at defenses in notrump contracts aided by placing declarer’s high-card points based on the bidding and play. Suitably assisted, one defender has known which suit to attack to gain sufficient tricks to defeat the contract. Now let’s move to trump contracts. South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace. How should East plan the defense? The auction given is using Standard. If you have adopted two-over-one game-forcing, North would rebid three spades because the opener’s hand strength is undefined. Then South would bid four spades to indicate a minimum. East does not want his partner to shift, so should signal with his heart nine at trick one. West cashes the heart king and plays his third heart. After East wins with his queen, what does he do next? East should count the points. South showed 12 to 14, the dummy has 13, West has already produced seven, and East has seven. Since all four jacks are on view, West cannot have another honor card. The only chance for a fourth trick lies in the trump suit. East must lead his last heart. Here, when West ruffs with the spade nine, it uppercuts dummy’s queen and promotes a spade trick for East. When you have taken every possible side-suit trick, give a ruff-and-sluff. It might result in a trump promotion or an uppercut.
