From our Geneva home to yours Holiday chill is in the air and our elves have been very busy creating a magical experience for our 54th Christmas Walk on December 3 at 6 pm in downtown Geneva. Among the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts will roast over open fires, carolers will fill the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene will take place. Dazzling window displays, brimming with gift ideas, invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve holiday refreshments. Our Great Tree, replaced in 2019 on the Courthouse Lawn, has now had three years of Christmas growth. Join us in this year’s TREE-lightful Celebration, where the tree, and lawn, will become aglow. This popular and family friendly event offers visitors a very merry Friday evening full of hometown traditions as well as special treats —the arrival of Santa Lucia, Christmas cookies, the Great Tree lighting, homemade candy canes, and… Santa’s arrival. Santa’s House will be a bit different this year, after the jolly old elf informed us that his house was just getting too old to make the trip from the North Pole. We put our best elves on it to create a winter wonderland home at the Geneva Visitor Center, 10 S. Third St. Reservations are required. Beginning December 4, from 10-10:20 am, wave to Santa as he rides in the carriage down Third Street. And don’t forget to drop your letters to Santa at his post office on the courthouse lawn. Santa has promised that every boy and girl that gives him a self-addressed stamped envelope will receive a personalized letter from him.

Treat yourself to the Holiday House Tour on December 3 & 4. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decorations, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illuminate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holiday magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva and a special giveaway from either The Olive Mill or 360° Flavor and Spice (quantities are limited) are included in the $35 price of the ticket. Due to COVID-19, some homeowners are limiting viewing to the main floor area only and masks may be required. We’ve added another Saturday of fun on December 11. Register for our 2nd Annual Cocoa Crawl and/ or our “Caroling on Campbell” tent. Taste some of our merchants’ most delicious cocoa concoctions and make sure to reserve a spot in our caroling tent and enjoy the songs of the season. All events are presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Geneva, sponsors and community volunteers. Proceeds from the house tour go to decorating the downtown for the holidays. Let us show you our warmth, hospitality and spirt as a visit to Geneva becomes part of your holiday celebration. Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby: Purchase Perfection

There is a special kind of magic in giving, and with Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby, the enchantment is yours to enjoy. Businesses beloved by the community for their unique elegance and artful allure, Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby have established themselves as an institution within Geneva’s locale. In December of 2017, Owner Sylvia Torres opened Little Red Barn Door upstairs inside the Berry House on 3rd Street and, as of July 2020, Torres set up shop with a second location on the main floor. “Downstairs is a modern farmhouse feel with gifts and everything you can imagine buying for your home,” says marketing consultant Ashley Nakayama. “Upstairs is more of a rustic farmhouse aesthetic that includes seasonal products.” Two years after establishing Little Red Barn Door, Torres welcomed Little Barn Baby just down the street and recently added a second location in Naperville. “Little Barn Baby has everything for little ones from newborn to 5t,” says Nakayama, “We carry heirloom quality products like wooden toys, books, and organic clothing.” Little Barn Baby is a warm and inviting boutique where you can find the perfect gift and be stress free while shopping with your kids. “You can always find something unique and different for any occasion,” says Nakayama.

Aside from running a flourishing set of small businesses, Torres also finds the time to give back—especially during the holiday season. “We are so honored to be able to sponsor Geneva’s Christmas Walk and House Tour this year. Geneva is such a magical place to be during the holidays, and we hope everyone has a chance to experience that magic this year,” Torres enthuses. “Our shops are situated right in the heart of downtown on historic 3rd Street and will be stocked to help with your gifting needs for little ones, teachers, Mom and more. There are so many amazing places to shop and eat in Geneva; thank you for shopping small this holiday season!” Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby are ready to assist your buying needs, letting you walk away with a perfect gift and not a small amount of charm. All I Want for Christmas is … Candy Canes

Graham’s. At 7:30, celebrate the anniversary of Chef Roby’s creation of the World’s Longest Candy Cane at All Chocolate Kitchen, 33 S. Third St. Chef Roby will present a 10-foot long smaller replica of his Guinness World Record-breaking 51-foot candy cane at his store. Chef will then break the candy cane into tiny pieces with a “magical” golden hammer for all guests to enjoy.

Santa Lucia Bob Untiedt’s greatest loves, besides his family, were music and confections. So, what better way to marry these two loves than to have a drum and bugle lead a parade of more than 100 loyal bell ringing customers to present the first candy cane of the season to the Mayor right before the tree is lit. In remembrance of Bob as Geneva’s own Chocolate Man, Graham’s will continue with this long-standing tradition. Join Bob’s Candy Cane Parade at 5:45, departing from 318 Coffeehouse, and march to the stage to present the first candy cane of the season to Mayor Burns. Watch the Graham’s Chocolates candy makers handcraft freshly made candy canes at their shop and enjoy the warm confections all evening long as a treat from

Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season arrives with her attendants. Her attendants will circulate through the gathering bidding welcome and offering a traditional Swedish “wish” cookie, Swedish Pepparkakor.

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south onto Third St. Go over the railroad tracks. Turn right onto Cheever Ave (Cheever is before lights at Rt. 31). Proceed as Cheever curves. Home will be on the left side. Situated in a friendly neighborhood, a luminary lit path leads you to one of the many entrances for this 5000 square foot home. The Chakires’ welcome you to their party. Hospitality and cheerfulness are the first impressions you feel upon entering the 2018 house designed and decorated by two local businesses, architect Tim Nelson and designer Haven Design Group (HDG). However, Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden Center, with assistance from Little Red Barn Door, has been chosen to bring Christmas magic to the home! This 4-bedroom home is where memories happen, and stories begin. Welcome to the Scotch Room. Masculine tones are added here with wood furnishings and leather club chairs. A cedar ceiling lightens the room while a single chandelier illuminates the space in a warm glow. Pocket doors afford a privacy option. A powder room begins the soft color palette of gray and white with pops of color sprinkled about. Fresh greenery and lovely place settings await the smiles and laughter of the family’s celebrations in the relaxed dining room. A shiplap beamed ceiling extends the farmhouse vibe to the family room. You can almost hear the chatter of merrymakers surrounding the stone fireplace and mantel, where stockings are hung with care. Mini barn doors cleverly conceal the television above. White shiplap is carried to the master bedroom, where with the vaulted ceilings, natural light permeates from the large windows throughout the bedroom. A bright, easy feeling is reflected. Off both the master and family room, a row of sliding doors lead to the sun porch. An easy way to combine indoor comforts with an outdoor feel. A jingle of bells has led the little ones to the windows, hoping for a front row seat to spy the jolly old elf. An inviting modern kitchen, in the heart of the home, is trimmed with all the makings for a party. A few black touches effortlessly crisp up this white kitchen, without detracting from its open, bright feel. Friends and family are drawn together to eat, talk and laugh about the dark wood topped island. Around the corner, a wine closet, stocked with reds and whites, is set to welcome strollers

by, as the family relishes in enjoying their outdoor patios all year long. Down the hall, out the door and up the stairs to something a little extra. The room is accessorized with comforts to watch the big game, relax or partake in an impromptu get together. This hidden room meets the needs of whatever type of guests our homeowners are hosting. The Chakires’ have expressed they would like their farmhouse to be “warm and inviting to all”. In that spirit, after the House Tour, a fundraiser for CASA Kane County will be held here. Friends, family, neighbors, and clients shall gather and bring gifts to be given to children in need; assuring they too have a Merry Christmas. With so much to appreciate, leaving this home will be difficult. However, delight in our decorator’s holiday splendor outside, as you remember the warmth, soul, and love of the family inside. (2) The Home of Mark Fricke and Tracy TreDenick-Fricke 1088 Dunstan Road Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south onto Third St. Go over the railroad tracks. Turn right onto Cheever Ave. (Cheever is before lights at Rt. 31). Proceed until Cheever turns into Dunstan. Home will be on the right side. Towering trees create a secluded garden for this 6000 plus square foot home; that originally had a railroad trestle running through the property. Built in 2006, a touch of Tuscany can be found throughout this five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home. The front doors, with wrought iron insets, welcome you inside. When the family moved in two years ago, they enlisted Haven Interiors Studio to completely redecorate this home and make it their own. From ceilings to floors, furniture to floor coverings, the talents of our decorator are found in every room, and we are fortunate to have them bringing their gifts to the House Tour this year. Upon entering the expansive foyer, take time to notice the voluminous ceilings, trim work, maple cabinetry and oversized windows throughout. A whimsical snowman Nativity scene bids you welcome. Cyan cork wallpaper accents the nine-foot live edge black walnut dining room table where strong pillars and arches frame an exquisitely set Christmas feast. On the way to the master suite, peek into the rich textured hall bath. The homeowners love to travel. Relive their journeys through the pinned map hanging outside their bedroom. The master, dressed in shades of soft cream, is showcased by a striking chandelier. Complementing seasonal colors have been added by our decorators. Antique chests, from a beloved grandmother, may be holding special mementos. Double doors open to a blissful patio while allowing ample rays of natural light to immerse the room. A hint of Tuscany is carried into the adjoining bathroom which features marble tile, a large shower and Jacuzzi tub. Preparing holiday meals is easy in this kitchen featuring two different wood cabinet finishes, wood-front appliances, and granite countertops. Friends and family join together around the island remembering stories of Christmas past. Take pause in the magnificent living room. A treasured heirloom, the family 100-year-old Bible is lovingly shown. Mark and Tracy very much enjoy Christmas, as the decorators intermix many of the homeowners’ own pieces into their festive design. Admire a set of original DUFTL Mannchen incense smokers, purchased at the Christmas Market in Cologne, Germany. A remembrance from when the homeowner worked and lived in the country that sees Christkindl bring gifts to families on the eve of Christmas. Stockings hang from the custom mantel situated on the awesome stone fireplace that houses a cozy fire on a cool winter evening. A pair

of antique skis hang prominently on the fireplace mantel and carols resonate from the 100-year-old player piano, adding to the ambiance. Rich sunlight streams in from the spacious windows providing a spotlight for the stately tree decked in holiday best. Perfect ending to a December day. French doors separate the downstairs office that is designed to be comfortable with warm colors and rich wood finishes, while functional, for working at home. Light streams through the wide windows bathing the room in a soft glow. Spot the small Christmas tree w/ fishing lures and Jim Beam tree topper, granting the office a jingle of Christmas. Before departing, gaze up to the loft, outlined in bronzed bannisters. The built-in shelving has become home to the Heirloom Christmas Village. Leaving out the front door, delight in the seasonal magic of lights and greenery. (3) The Higgins Family Home 528 Campbell Street

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south on Third St. Turn right on Campbell St. Home will be on the left side, on the corner. The Higgins home defines the phrase “great curb appeal”. Looking at this 2015 home from the street, you begin to anticipate a creative and modern interior. Brown paned windows glisten in the December sun. Warm wooden beams surround the covered porch where you can rock away any worries night or day. Upon entering the foyer, the spacious living room features a neutral palette accented with pops of color, as seen in the indigo sofa. The stone fireplace, one of three, is flanked by chairs for relaxing, while the exposed beam coffered ceiling adds an eye-catching finishing touch. Take special notice of the lamps and bar cart items that are from a grandparent’s Brooklyn restaurant; located adjacent to a WWII Navy shipyard. Working from home is a treat in this office. The views are appreciated by the homeowners, and their four-legged friends. Built-ins and pocket doors are well-appointed. This 3,400 square foot home offers a spacious dining room. Party guests enjoy holiday camaraderie while sipping wines from the homeowner’s collection found in the custom, temperature-controlled wine cellar. Glass doors provide easy access to peruse the Cabernets, Chardonnays and Rosés. However, with 300 choices, choosing one…..is not so easy. The openness of the kitchen provides the chef an opportunity to relish in the laughter and excitement happening. You can almost smell the gingerbread baking. Timeless elegance is exuded with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, black leathered granite countertops and a wall of framed snow-white custom cabinets. A Delicatus White Granite topped kitchen island sits in the middle of the room, creating an extra workspace and an eat-in area. Large pendant lights let the newly made gingerbread homes take center stage. Descend the stairs where our decorators have decked the halls with boughs of holly. This basement has everything you need for ideal entertaining. The family will be celebrating their second Christmas in this English Country home, having moved here in 2020 from Maryland. And their Baltimore roots run deep. Pictures of Fells Point and the Inner Harbor bring smiles, remembering the east coast. Can you guess what NFL team they root for on Sunday? The layout gives the family three different options for activities, while remaining connected to each other in their basement space: working out, relaxing and watching TV or playing ping-pong. Don’t be surprised if Santa comes down this fireplace. Passing by a rustic lit wall, our tour leads through a well-ordered mud room before stepping out into the

crisp air. Every detail of 528 Campbell has been carefully thought out to honor residing in the heart of historic Geneva, while offering the comforts of modern living. 4) The Home of Clem and Patty Martin 1900 Kaneville Road

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south/west on Kaneville Rd. Proceed on Kaneville Rd. Home will be on the left side. Visitors may park on Southampton as well. This captivating ranch home was built in 1954. In 2015 the Martins fully renovated and redesigned this 3100 square foot home to its present beauty; with assistance from our Holiday House Tour decorator Geneva Design House by Strawflower. Holiday adornment decking the front door gives hint of the amazement that lies inside. Barn doors open to a dining room awaiting the smiles and laughter at the family’s Christmas Eve dinner. While the adults finish dinner, a well-placed window provides the opportunity to catch a glimpse of eight tiny reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh. A crackling fire, in the peninsula fireplace, beckons carolers into the spacious, yet quite cozy, living room to surround the piano filling the room with strains of seasonal music. Exposed wood beams bring in a rustic quality overhead. The homeowners partnered with Geneva Design House by Strawflower to create inviting rooms from top to bottom when remodeling. Cherished collections and recollections are displayed in a curio cabinet. Clem’s family tree includes two mayors, William B and William C Wood. Locals may recognize the last name, as the Geneva Chamber Wood Award is named, in part, to honor Clem’s grandparent’s, William C & Elsie, contributions to Geneva. On the way to the master, our designers have carried the Christmas theme to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Special photos line the hallway, creating a gallery of memories. This welcoming, modern master bedroom features a large area rug for a traditional feel. Accent pieces, such as the art above the bed and a plethora of throw pillows in shades of burgundy, teal and brown, provide a bit of luxury. Sliding doors lead you to the porch. Windows surround the room, presenting a panoramic view of a winter wonderland. While decked for this holiday season; with heated floors, every season is the right season to relax and enjoy this room. The canoe above was built

by the aforementioned Wood gentlemen. Entered, for many years, in the town’s annual Fox River canoe race, the Geneva mayors would team up with the Mayor of St. Charles…consistently placing first! Beyond the original Dutch door lies a kitchen large enough for Santa and all his elves. The two-toned cabinetry creates a striking contrast, while hardwood floors add warmth to the space. Built-in stainless-steel appliances add to the contemporary feel of the space. Filtered sunlight, from above the farm sink, makes the kitchen glow with the spirit of the season. And just when you think you have seen all this home’s glory, there is one more surprise. Collecting and restoring classic cars is a passion for the homeowner, and he is delighted to share a glimpse of his magnificent collection. Take a step back to 1966 while you admire his Christmas red pickup. Moving back to their hometown to delight in Christmases present and future, these Geneva High School graduates know the holidays are better in Geneva. (5) The Telfer Home 1110 Union Street

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn north on Anderson Blvd. Turn west on Union Street. Home will be on the left side. In a highly desirable neighborhood, where most of the homes were built in the 50s & 60s, this mid-century ranch is no wallflower. Bought by the homeowners in 2018, they had a vision to delight the eye and fire the imagination, by restoring it back to its 1962 splendor…. with present-day conveniences. Walking through the bright orange door, you know this house will be anything but “square”. This 2000 square foot home is packed with architecture, history and style. Take notice of the slate floor and light fixture, both date back to when the home was built. Not only is the piano room/living room eclectic and playful, but the vintage Vladimir Kagan lime swivel chairs and serpentine sofa offer that mod, fresh feel. Geometric patterned art on the walls, finishes off the design. Gatherings By Design has blended their own creativity with the homeowner’s pieces to re-create a Christmas from decades ago. The master bedroom color scheme, furniture, rug and artwork are all hallmarks of the 60s popular decorating theme. It’s simply perfect from top to bottom. Small doses of pumpkin orange hues enhance the coziness. The master bath tends to be more modern with black countertops and a soaking tub, however the linen closet is reminiscent of the era. This fully remodeled sizeable kitchen has a refreshing warmth and graciousness that is characteristic of the entire house. The island unit divides the room into work centers, with a family room at the far end. Celebrate at the FUNdue party. Pendant lights over the island and dining table complement the design. An entertaining essential, also known as the bar cart, got its start in the middle of the last century, providing convenient entertaining. This one is stocked for the merriment of welcoming in 2022! You will discover a throwback to the spirit, we so loved before, in the family room. With an emphasis on clean, horizontal lines and bold pops of color, like the long couch, ottoman and lively painting, this small area seems larger than it really is. The result is an equally good setting for entertaining and a busy life. Bob’s father was a doctor and his picture not only pays respect, but fits the era. Fun fact – he delivered Barb. Was that a sign that

18

Bob and Barb would eventually meet and marry? Expansive panes of glass and sliding-glass doors allow light to enter rooms from multiple angles. Those doors lead to the three-season room giving view to Jack Frost’s paradise. The original brick outside back wall becomes an inside wall for this living extension. Curl up with a cup of tea after a frenzied day of gift wrapping. Santa would most definitely approve, and probably suggest a cookie or two. As you leave, just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring tingle tingling too. Because, it’s lovely weather to continue your house tour views.
