Get crafty this year and spread a bunch of holiday cheer (BPT) - Holiday decorations bring a smile to everyone’s face, and this year, we could all use that now more than ever. Crafting seasonal décor instead of shopping for it gives you and your family something to occupy your extra time at home and helps you avoid big crowds and shopping stress. Perhaps you’ll make wooden signs with jolly messages or metal snowflakes covered in lights? Or maybe you’ll craft ornaments for the tree or engrave life-lasting messages into the menorah? No matter the craft, a homemade holiday novelty will bring a sense of pride and happiness to all.
Ready to get crafty and holiday savvy? Here’s what to do: Make a plan
Visualize your project in your space and measure the location so you know how many supplies you need. Take a look around to notice what areas have the most room. Get
KCChronicle.com KCC_ShopLocalGiftGuide_121020.indd 9
a view from the outside to see what your neighbors will see when passing by. Browse social media/decoration sites for inspiration. Save pictures of your favorites and then picture it fitting in your space. You could even sketch out your design on paper to get a clearer vision of what you’re going to create. Locate your sources of electricity if you want to incorporate lights, music or even snow machines (hey, we can dream!). Be sure you have extension cords if you’ll need them.
Shop for your materials
Shop for and select the items that are eyecatching and fun. Consider bright, festive colors and pretty patterns. Research the items you need, and what stores near you carry them before you leave to save some time. Price check between stores to ensure you don’t overspend. If possible, you can even order online supplies ahead of time to avoid the crowds.

Have the best tools in your tool belt or whatever spiced-snow-scent-tickles-yourEquip yourself with tools that are lightweight, versatile, portable, user friendly and the very best to get the job done. The new MakerX line of tools from Worx will elevate your home-crafter game, giving you a range of creative options, allowing you to create from anywhere and perfecting the small details that make all the difference. The tool set revolves around a 20V Power Hub battery that powers five versatile tools, including an air brush, angle grinder, mini heat gun, rotary tool and wood and metal grinder, so the possibilities are limitless. Be sure to test out your tools on some scraps first before diving into your perfect materials and always follow safety measures and be careful when handling tools.
Set the mood
You’ve got everything you need so now it’s time to start feeling festive. Light an apple cinnamon, vanilla cookie, fir and firewood
fancy candle, turn on the cold weather carols and get your groove on. Pour a cup of cocoa - or a glass of spiked cider for mom and dad - and get to work!
Kick back and admire your work
Enjoy the company of those around you as you work together to make your holiday crafts and see the beauty in creating something with your hands, regardless of the imperfections. Work any mistakes into your final design. After all, the experience is half the fun, and you’re making memories that will last forever. Proudly display your holiday decorations in and out of your home for yourself, your family and your neighbors to enjoy. Take lots of pictures for friends and family who can’t be there in person and share your work on social media. A little joy goes a long way.

While that statement always resonates, it is even more relevant now for local DIY workshop businesses in the midst of COVID-19. “What can we do? says Amy Kumler, owner of Pinot’s Palette in St. Charles. “It’s been a good exercise in thinking outside the box and figuring out new ways to do things. With limited numbers permitted in some classes and with the threat of closures looming, many businesses are reverting back to tactics implemented in the spring, when many workshops were forced to close their doors for several months.

When workshops are allowed to be open for classes, they are restricted to very limited numbers and all participants must adhere to social distancing guidelines and wear masks. “It’s really not crowded and people can feel comfortable, says Chilled Palette owner Miriam Kuta, who has a limit of 15 people for in-person classes at her studio. “We’re doing what we can. At Board & Brush, every party has their own private table at the workshop to help ensure social distancing and they have implemented a regular thorough cleaning and sanitization regiment. “All our tools, drills, and anything else that is

used during the workshop gets sanitized at the end of the evening,” says Katie Ilic, owner of Board & Brush in Oswego, St. Charles and Downers Grove. “We also do a deep cleaning of our studio once a week.” But not everyone feels comfortable sharing spaces with others right now - no matter how distanced they are or how clean things are. And that’s totally fine. These studios have a plan for that: take-home kits and virtual classes. In addition to reduced-size in-person classes and private events, Board & Brush offers takehome kits starting at $25 for all ages with larger projects available on demand. “It feels great to be creative,” Ilic says, noting that Zoom is a great way to get together with friends while doing their take-home kits. “Getting to make some DIY decor will lift your spirits every time you look at the piece you created.”

Celebrate at home?
Sure. At the Chilled Palette, Kuta has launched both a “paint-at-home” program that allows customers to follow step-by-step instructions to create their desired painting. “Paint-at-home” pre-made kits can be purchased online (customers can even add on a discounted bottle of wine) or artists can pick their own project and she can create instructions. She offers curbside pickup or even free local delivery. “Our instructions are written, but they’re very detailed with a step-by-step breakdown,” Kuta says. “All the paint cups are numbered and correspond with the instructions with details about which brush is for which step. We’ve sold many, many, many, paint-at-home kits and not one person has had to call me with questions.”
Wax at home?
Never. Your first wax is FREE* Geneva | 630-208-4880
Kuta also offers a virtual class option, during which she essentially teaches the class like she normally would, just via a Zoom link rather than

in-person. This is a great option because people can join from anywhere; Kuta has mailed kits across the country for bachelorette parties and families. “I’m in the process of doing a birthday party right now that the grandparents are painting along with at home,” Kuta says. “They’ll be all together, even if they can’t be together.” At Pinot’s Palette, Kumler has even given grandparents Zoom links to private birthday parties so that although they can’t participate, they can feel like they’re there. “It’s been great to have cute things happen like that,” she adds. “People have told me that they really love doing that.” Kumler has also added video components to her studio’s take-home options. She has a prerecorded video instruction option for her take-
home kits and when her studio is open with in-person classes, has an optional Zoom link for people to join classes from home. No matter what take-home option participants choose, every kit comes with everything needed to complete a project, from the canvas all the way down to a plastic water cup.

“It’s up to the studio how they put their takehome kits together, but it’s literally everything,” Kumler says, noting that she even has easels to loan out.
More than ever, your home is your sanctuary. We’ll make sure it feels that way.
In addition to take-home kits and classes, some studios have gotten creative during their free time. Kumler, who received a PPP loan while she was closed, was required to use the loan for payroll, so she put her team to work - creating pre-made signs available for purchase. Kumler herself is typically more behind-the-scenes, but opted to throw her homemade chunky knit blankets in the mix, too. “Great service. Swift, efficient, and mindful of COVID-19 practices. It was a relief to just open doors and let the techs do what they needed and still keep distance.”
“I’m not an artist at all but I made a bunch of those and they’re selling really great,” Kumler says, adding that they are also now offered as a take-home kit. Like Kumler, Ilic also offers pre-made items available for purchase but also has customized options as well. Many people think of “small businesses” as just shops and restaurants. However, many of these DIY workshops are local businesses or locallyowned franchises and need some support, too. Plus, it’s a fun, safe activity to do with family or friends.
