The divisive political landscape we find ourselves living through these days can feel stranger than fiction. Proving the idiom true is the new, eerily timely, six-episode limited series “Zero Day,” premiering Thursday, Feb. 20, on Netflix. Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” 2023) stars as former President George Mullen, who is pulled out of retirement to head the precedentsetting Zero Day Commission. When a cyber attack is carried out against the United States, it causes several disasters and country-wide chaos, killing thousands of citizens on what becomes known as Zero Day. Following the tragic events, President Evelyn Mitchell (Angela Bassett, “Damsel,” 2024) calls on the former president to lead an investigation into who is responsible for the attacks. Whether outside forces or homegrown terrorists were behind the fatal plot, the many voices willfully spreading disinformation make Mullen’s job incredibly complicated. To get to the bottom of it, the former president surrounds himself with as trustworthy a team as he can in the ambitious world of American politics.
Jesse Plemons (“Kinds of Kindness,” 2024) stars as Mullen’s former aide Roger Carlson, who is brought back to work for the commission. Also joining the investigation are political strategist and Mullen’s former chief of staff Valerie Whitesell (Connie Britton, “Dear Edward”) and Department of Justice lawyer Carl Otieno (McKinley Belcher III, “Ozark”), who serves as lead investigator for the Zero Day Commission. Lizzy Caplan (“Fatal Attraction”) is progressive congressional representative Alexandra Mullen and daughter of the former president, while Joan Allen (Lisey’s Story”) is former first lady and nominee to the federal bench, Sheila Mullen. Richard Dreyer; Bill Camp (“Presumed Innocent”) as CIA Director Jeremy Lasch; Gaby Hoffmann (“Transparent”) as Silicon Valley billionaire Monica Kidder; Clark Gregg (“Snowpiercer”) as Robert Lyndon, another billionaire with a penchant for manipulating politics; and Mark Ivanir (“Mayor Of Kingstown”) as intelligence operative Natan. Dan Stevens (“Cuckoo,” 2024) portrays Mullen’s most vocal critic, political talk show host Evan Green, complete with the faux-blue collar look of real right-wing propagandists. In an official trailer for the upcoming series, Green films a segment of “The Evan Green Show” for the fictional American Access Network, riling viewers up by saying, “Ex-President George Mullen is not only a wannabe tyrant, he’s a deeply troubled man.”
Claims of tyranny are to be expected, given the exceptional reach of the government’s Zero Day Commission to pull anyone they suspect of having involvement without warrants. However, Green suggests on his program that Mullen is withholding the kind of secrets that call into question the integrity of the commission under his leadership.
With the threat of repeat attacks made clear through a nationwide text alert on Zero Day promising “this will happen again,” it is imperative that Mullen and the members of the commission work quickly, by any means necessary, to find those responsible before they can act again. Is calling out the hypocrisy of a possibly compromised leader like Mullen a step in the right direction for a more just America? Or is it just another distraction tactic from those interested in degrading civil liberties?
Though the series was developed before the most recent U.S. presidential election came to pass, some of the events of the series bear a striking resemblance to real circumstances that arose during the campaign — notably Mullen questioning his own competency as he begins noticing signs of cognitive decline.
Series co-creator Eric Newman (“Griselda”) spoke to Vanity Fair in November about the upcoming series, revealing that he and fellow co-creator Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie,” 2016), former president of NBC News, sought to confront the country’s relationship with the truth in “Zero Day,” tuning into Americans’ imaginings of the future.
“It feels like it could happen. Based on how you feel about the
election, this is either going to be an aspirational story about people who can find their way to the truth, even when it’s really hard, or a cautionary tale of the perils of the deep state and absolute power corrupting absolutely,” Newman said. “For me, it’s a little bit of both.”
Talking to Tudum, Newman remarked on legendary screen actor De Niro’s influence on the series, saying, “[De Niro] very
much became our partner in this process — very hands-on, very involved, read everything at every stage, and it’s been an incredible honor and privilege.”
Portraying Mullen in “Zero Day” is De Niro’s first starring television role, having previously made small screen appearances as himself or as a cameo — nothing as integral as this upcoming role. At 81 years old and with several projects in the
works, including the upcoming mobster biopic “The Alto Knights” — slated for release in theaters this March — it looks like De Niro is holding true to his oft-repeated word of never retiring from acting. Secured role: The Dexter universe is growing, and the latest spinoff has secured a very wellknown actress to play one of its leading characters.
An Oscar nominee for her career-making turn in “Pulp Fiction” (1994), Uma Thurman has signed on to star as a series regular opposite Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under”), in the upcoming spinoff “Dexter: Resurrection.”
While no plot details have been released (yet), we do know it will be a direct follow-up to 2021’s “Dexter: New Blood,” a follow-up to the original “Dexter” series itself, which ended its highly successful run in 2013.
Hall is reprising his role as both narrator and the titular serial killer, who appeared to have been fatally shot in “Dexter: New Blood” — but, as revealed in “Dexter: Original Sin” (spoilers), the bullet missed his heart.
Thurman, who recently starred in Prime Video’s “Red, White and Royal Blue” (2023) and “Oh, Canada” (2024), will play the role of Charley, head of security for mysterious billionaire Leon Prater. According to the official character description, Charley is a former Special Ops officer who worked various high-level private security jobs before taking on her position as the resourceful and meticulous right-hand woman for Prater.
In her two-plus decades in the industry, Thurman has built up an impressive resume distinguished by such box office hits as the
aforementioned “Pulp Fiction” and the Kill Bill movies. You don’t tend to think of her TV work as much, but she won a Golden Globe for her role in the HBO cable film “Hysterical Blindness” and picked up an Emmy nomination for her performance in NBC’s “Smash.” She also appeared in Showtime’s “Super Pumped” and Apple TV+’s “Suspicion.”
Other “Resurrection” cast members — all of them returning Dexter alumni — include David Zayas as Det. Angel Batista; James Remar as Dexter’s deceased father, Harry Morgan; and Jack Alcott, who played Dexter’s son, Harrison, in “Dexter: New Blood.” Production on “Dexter: Resurrection” began last month in New York, and, reportedly, Paramount+ With Showtime is eyeing a summer release date.
Emmy moves: Viewers who have come to expect the Daytime Emmy Awards telecast to air sometime between April and June will have to wait longer in 2025. The awards recognizing excellence in daytime television programming will be handed out in a formal ceremony held in October this year, swapping places with the News & Documentary Emmys. What’s behind this big shuffle? It all comes down to the time-sensitive nature of the topics recognized by the News & Documentary Emmys. “For nearly half a century, the News & Documentary Emmys have honored the best in broadcast journalism and documentary programming,” Adam Sharp, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), said in a statement. “Moving the ceremony earlier in the Emmy schedule shines a brighter light on the timely nature of the incredible content being recognized.”
Nominations for the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be announced in the final week of April.
As for the 52nd Daytime and Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, it will still focus on content originally broadcast in 2024 despite the later airdate.
Admittedly, the few extra months will also give NATAS more time to find a new broadcast partner, since its most recent contract with CBS ended last year and it isn’t expected to be renewed.

‘SNL’ celebrates half century of late-night comedy

From baby boomers to Generation Z, if you grew up in or currently live in North America, chances are you have at least heard of “Saturday Night Live.” First airing on NBC as “NBC’s Saturday Night” in October 1975, the sketch comedy darling changed its name to “Saturday Night Live” following the 1976 cancelation of rival variety series “Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell” on ABC.
Roll on 50 years to 2025, and the iconic improvisational comedy series celebrates half a century of laughs with a weekend-long celebration on NBC. Beginning with its regularly scheduled late-night episode on Saturday, Feb. 15, the festivities reach a pinnacle on Sunday, Feb. 16, during a threehour prime-time special featuring musical guests, celebrity appearances and returning cast members. Both events can also be streamed on Peacock.
While the 50th anniversary special was officially announced this past fall, NBC’s press team has done a fabulous job of keeping the scheduled programming a surprise for its viewers. As of writing, no specifics have been released as to who will be hosting (or if indeed any one person is), which musicians will perform or who from the 50-years-worth of cast will return to star again. That said, if the show’s 40th anniversary is any indication of what’s to come this February, fans of the series are in for a laugh-laden treat.
When “SNL” reached its 40thanniversary celebration in February 2015, it gave audiences one of the series’ most highly regarded performances in pop star Miley Cyrus’s rendition of Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.”
Backed by a full band that included “SNL” cast member Fred Armisen (“Portlandia”) on tambourine, the performance helped to solidify Cyrus as a legitimate musician packing serious vocals at a time when she was at the heart of the tabloids due to her shifting style and tumultuous relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games,” 2012).
There to witness the groundbreaking performance was a crowd packed with celebs, including 50 Shades franchise star Dakota Johnson, pop icons Taylor Swift (“Midnights”), singer/actor Justin Timberlake (“Friends with Benefits,” 2011), Star Wars film franchise creator George Lucas, Hollywood royal Steven Spielberg (“Jurassic Park,” 1993), then-governor of Alaska Sarah Palin and would-be president Donald Trump, among others.
Ten years later, the list of celebrities attending “SNL50,” as it has come to be called, will likely look a bit different, but there is no doubt that the event will be one for the books. With a current series cast that counts Chloe Fineman (“Search Party”), Ego Nwodim (“Singularity,” 2017), Sarah Sherman (“Nimona,” 2023), Bowen Yang (“Isn’t It Romantic,” 2019), James Austin Johnson (“Praise Petey”), Andrew Dismukes (“The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy”), Mikey Day (“Home Sweet Home Alone,” 2021), Heidi Gardner (“Hustle,” 2022), Michael Longfellow (“Ghosts of Ruin”), Devon Walker (“Everything’s Trash”) and Marcello Hernandez (“The Improvisor,” 2022) among its main cast members, alongside longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson (“Kenan & Kel”), the comedy keeps coming half a century after the show’s inception.
Of course, a part of what makes “SNL” such a success is the nurturing guidance of its creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels. Also well-known for his involvement in “30 Rock” and “The Kids in the Hall,” and for writing the 1986 cult-classic buddy comedy “Three Amigos!,” Canadian-born Michaels has been a part of “SNL’s” magic from the very beginning, leading the variety series to 103 Emmy wins to date and more than 300 nominations. Now 80, Michaels is starting to give thought to who will take up the mantle when he steps down.
“We’re doing the 50th anniversary show in February of ‘25,” Michaels told Entertainment Weekly on the red carpet at the 2023 Emmy Awards. “I will definitely be there for that, and definitely be there until that, and sometime be-

fore that we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do.”
While that is hardly an announcement of his departure, Michaels’ Emmys statement may signal a big announcement during “SNL50,” which has reportedly been in the planning stages since early 2022. As for his successor, the esteemed producer has stated, “It could easily be Tina Fey,” one of the series’ best-known performers and a member of “SNL’s” Five-Timers Club.
It’s also likely that the Five-Timers Club — a growing but intimate list of people who have hosted the show five or more times — will be invited to attend and take part in “SNL50.” Should they all show up, viewers can expect to see Tina Fey (“Mean Girls,” 2004) and Timberlake alongside Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”), Chevy Chase (“Community”), Candice Bergen (“Boston Legal”), Tom Hanks (“Forrest Gump,” 1994), Danny DeVito (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), John Goodman (“Roseanne”), Bill Murray (“Scrooged,” 1988), Christopher Walken (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994), Drew Barrymore (“Never Been Kissed,” 1999), Ben Affleck (“The Town,” 2010), Melissa McCarthy (“Gilmore Girls”), Scarlett Johansson (“Black Widow,” 2021), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (“Young Rock”), Will Ferrell (“Elf,” 2003), Paul Rudd (“AntMan,” 2015), Jonah Hill (“War Dogs,” 2016), John Mulaney (“Big Mouth”), Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”), Emma Stone (“La La Land,” 2016), Kristen Wiig (“Bridesmaids,” 2011), Martin Short (“Three Amigos,” 1986) and Jack White of the White Stripes.

Q: What’s Simon Helberg up to now? And can he really speak all those languages?
A: Simon Helberg, who played the multilingual Howard Wolowitz on “The Big Bang Theory” until its end in 2019, rushed to learn French to get a role in the 2021 musical drama “Annette.” But other than that and some high school Latin, he only speaks English.

The “Annette” story is even more complicated than it sounds. After more than a decade on one of the biggest sitcoms of all time, he decided to make a hard turn toward art films. That’s when he heard about “Annette,” a script being worked on by the highly decorated French director Leos Carax (“Holy Motors,” 2012). Helberg told Vulture.com that Carax wanted him for the role but could only hire him if he was a European citizen (for funding purposes). So,
post-“Bang” career. He’s done three other quirky indie films since 2019. So why was 555 free?
In the early days of the telephone system, phone numbers actually began with two letters to indicate the region of the number. If you remember the old Glenn Miller “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” that’s a reference to this old phone system, and specifically to the number for the Hotel Pennsylvania, whose number at the time was PE-6-5000.

This left 555 basically free because there were very few exchange names that translated to 55 (since 5 corresponded with JKL on the dial).
Since then, some 555 numbers have been added back into use. Today, only 555-0100 to 555-0199 are officially reserved for fiction.
