Political history has intrigued the entertainment world since the dawn of moving pictures. For instance, while the first-ever reported film was a two-second clip of early motion picture camera inventor Louis Le Prince’s English garden in 1888, it wasn’t long before royalty entered the picture in 1895’s “The Execution of Mary Stuart,” an American production depicting the death of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Today, one need not look far to find the descendants of such early materials. On the television front, for example, Netflix’s “The Crown” was immensely popular throughout its run and snagged a “certified fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes four years in a row, culminating in a 96% approval for its fourth season. Likewise, TV viewers have seen the release of similar series such as “The Great,” about Russia’s Catherine the Great (portrayed by Elle Fanning, “The Girl From Plainville”); “The Serpent Queen,” about ItalianFrench queen Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton, “Minority Report,” 2002); and “The Last Czars,” about the fall of Russia’s Romanov dynasty, to name a few.
One such series that captured the hearts and minds of TV audiences in recent years is the Canal+ co-production “Marie Antoinette,” which chronicles the rise and fall of the opulent, titular French queen and her well-meaning but “rather dull” husband, King Louis XVI. Back for a second season of fictionalized history on PBS, the story’s newest installment marks the beginning of the end for the pair and their reign ahead of the French Revolution.
Season 2 of “Marie Antoinette” premieres Sunday, March 23, on PBS. Check your local listings for timing.
The series, created by Deborah Davis (“The Favourite,” 2018) for Canal+ in association with CAPA Drama (Newen Studios), Banijay Studios France and Beside Productions, stars Russian-born German actress Emilia Schüle (“Dreamfactory,” 2019) in the leading role,
Back to bourgeoisie ‘Marie Antoinette’ returns for a tumultuous second season
alongside U.K.-based actor Louis Cunningham (“Bridgerton”) as Louis XVI.
Not unlike Sofia Coppola’s (“Lost in Translation,” 2003) 2006 film of the same name starring Kirsten Dunst (“Spider-Man,” 2002), “Marie Antoinette” begins the ruler’s story by tracing her trip from “Austria to marry the Dauphin of France,” the first season’s official synopsis reads. “With pressure to continue the Bourbon line and secure the Franco-Austrian alliance, she must follow the complex rules of the French court while attempting to charm her reluctant king-to-be, Louis XVI.”
Now headed into its second season, the series picks up after the palace’s luxurious New Year’s celebrations, which came to a grim end when Louis announced his country’s support for the United States of America in its War of Independence against the English, thus positioning the French at odds with Britain.
With that in mind, a recent PBS news release regarding Season 2 notes that, “Antoinette and Louis [are] facing unprecedented challenges at the height of their power.
“As financial crises loom across the nation and political rivalries intensify,” the release continues, “the royal couple must navigate an increasingly hostile court and a changing France. From Versailles to the [Palais-Royal], the seeds of a revolution began to take root, threatening the very foundations of France’s long-standing monarchy.”
Additionally, PBS also provided limited episodic information, beginning with its second-season premiere, titled “The Worst Winter,” in which “Marie Antoinette and Louis embrace modern rule, but enemies lurk everywhere, even in Versailles.” This opening episode sets the stage for the monarchy’s inevitable decline and the famous beheadings of its rulers in 1793, amid the country’s Reign of Terror at the hands of French lawyer and statesman Maximilien Robespierre.
As for the series finally making its way to North American audiences in March 2023 following its premiere several months earlier in
France (and later, the U.K.), fans of the series may be pleased to learn that the second season arrives worldwide on the same date.
“We are so excited that PBS’s audience will get to see the anticipated second season of ‘Marie Antoinette’,” stated Maria Bruno Ruiz, vice president of program content strategy and scheduling at PBS. “The tension in Season 2 builds with each episode as we experience the beginning of the
end for King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.
“The French debt is increasing with more loans, the affair of the diamond necklace is scandalous, and the inner circle of Versailles is closing in on king and queen,” Bruno Ruiz continues. “Season 2 features incredible talent and storytelling along with spectacular breathtaking costumes and set designs that take viewers right inside the walls of the Palace of Versailles.”
Season 2 of “Marie Antoinette” also stars Freya Mavor (“The Emperor of Paris,” 2018), Jasmine Blackborow (“Shadow and Bone”), Jack Archer (“Call the Midwife”), Crystal ShepherdCross (“Chronicles of the Sun”), Oscar Lesage (“The Substance,” 2024), Roxane Duran (“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” 2022), Caroline Piette (“120 BPM,” 2017), Yoli Fuller (“The Widow”), Liah O’Prey (“Mary Queen of Scots,” 2018),
Martijn Lakemeier (“Hollands hoop”), Guy Henry (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” 2016) and James Northcote (“Anna Karenina,” 2012).
There is, as of writing, no word yet on whether there are plans for a third season.
Don’t miss the beginning of the end when “Marie Antoinette” returns Sunday, March 23, for a second season on PBS. Check your local listings for details.

‘Supernatural’ team-up: As it embarks on its fifth and final season, the Prime Video series “The Boys” is ready to get “Supernatural” in a big way.
The streamer’s satirical superhero series was developed by former “Supernatural” creator and original showrunner Eric Kripke. Since 2022, it has featured Jensen Ackles (“The Winchesters”) who played older brother Dean Winchester in “Supernatural,” in the role of Soldier Boy.
Now, two more “Supernatural” alumni are set to join “The Boys” as Season 5 guest stars: Jared Padalecki (“Walker”), who played younger brother Sam Winchester, and Misha Collins (“Gotham Knights”), known for playing the angel Castiel in the CW series.
Kripke has repeatedly expressed a desire to get Padalecki on the show, telling Variety last year, “I feel like I have to complete my game of ‘Supernatural’ Pokémon and I have my one big one — very big one — left to catch.”
In a later interview, he added, “I love him [Padalecki] and you try to work with people that you love.”
Presumably, schedules aligned after The CW canceled the Padalecki-led series “Walker” last year, and now Kripke has gotten his wish, as announced via a joint Instagram Reel, reuniting the former “Supernatural” co-stars and a very special Chevy Impala.
We don’t know yet what roles Padalecki and Collins will play in “The Boys” — that info is being kept tightly under wraps for now. Another unknown is whether they’ll share scenes with other “Supernatural” actors who have appeared in “The Boys,” such as Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Walking Dead”), Rob Benedict (“Felicity”) or Jim Beaver (“Deadwood”), who plays Robert “Bob” Singer in both series.
Production on the fifth season is already underway with a planned 2026 release. Meanwhile, The Boys franchise continues to grow with the Ackles-led prequel series “Vought Rising,” reportedly set to begin filming this August.

Canadians take Hollywood Rogen, O’Hara star in ‘The Studio’
By Dana Simpson TV Media
Little more than three weeks after the 97th Academy Awards aired live from Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on ABC, a new look at the industry premieres on Apple TV+. Offering a comedic yet deeply cynical look at the entertainment industry, Tinsel Town politics and the pressures of running a film studio in modern-day L.A., “The Studio” releases the first two of 10 episodes Wednesday, March 26, on Apple TV+.
The series, created by two-time Primetime Emmy-winning writing and producing duo Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck (both of “White House Plumbers”) in conjunction with Frida Perez (“New Money,” 2017) and Emmy-nominated Canadians Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (both of “This Is the End,” 2013), follows Matt Remick (Rogen), who has just been hired to lead Continental Studios, a production company determined to continue making great films amid industry controversy and growing irrelevance.
“As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films,” the Apple TV+ description reads. “With their power suits masking their never-ending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. As someone who eats, sleeps and breathes movies, it’s the job Matt’s been pursuing his whole life, and it may very well destroy him.”
The teaser trailer for the series, released mid-November 2024, relies heavily on drums and big-band brass to provide some of that signature Hollywood grandeur as Rogen’s Matt shares his reservations about accepting the job while in discussion with a confidante played by fellow Canadian Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”).
“The job is a meat grinder,” O’Hara says cooly in the trailer, indicating that leading man Matt may be the meat in this particular situation, should he accept the job (and he does).
Even from the trailer alone, it is clear that, not unlike FX’s “The Bear,” “The Studio” intends to weave stress and anxiety directly into the foundation of each episode. From awkward character interactions to tense music, rapidfire conversations and unflattering, borderline absurd celebrity cameos, “The Studio” has all the earmarks of a hit series in the making.
“We wanted the show to have an immersive, manic energy to it,” Rogen told Esquire in a February 2025 interview, “because that’s our experience, being in these rooms with people yelling at each other. We wanted to throw you into it and create this sort of unpredictable, uneasy energy.”
The “uneasy energy” is also catered directly to the audience by way of several extended tracking shots. In fact, according to a December 2024 Vanity Fair article by senior Hollywood correspondent Anthony Breznican, the crew behind “The Studio” preferred to shoot the series using “a single camera rather than having multiple concurrent setups because they favored long, unbroken shots that built tension and culminated in chaos.”
In fact, the crew — who wound up snagging legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese (“Taxi Driver,” 1976) for a scene in the series — was afraid that, in Breznican’s words, using “only one camera might seem amateurish to Scorsese,” but in the end Rogen, said Scorsese was “enthusiastic” about the idea, likening the bold choice to the revolutionary “French New Wave” style.
Screen Scramble
But, Scorsese is far from the only big name credited with an appearance in “The Studio.” The comedy counts Kathryn Hahn (“Agatha All Along”), Ike Barinholtz (“The Mindy Project”), Chase Sui Wonders (“Bodies Bodies Bodies,” 2022) and O’Hara among the main cast alongside Rogen. Meanwhile, celebrities including filmmaker Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind,” 2001); Zac Efron (“Baywatch,” 2017); “Smile” (2022) and “Smile 2” (2024) director Parker Finn; “Breaking Bad” and “Your Honor” star Bryan Cranston; Avengers franchise star Anthony Mackie; Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” 2006); South African-American actress Charlize Theron (“Monster,” 2003); R&B popstar Usher (“Yeah!”); and Sugar Lyn Beard (“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” 2016), known to many Canadian millennials for her sweet-voiced hosting duties on YTV’s “The Zone” from 2001 to 2007, also star.
As for how the idea for “The Studio” was born, Rogen told Esquire cover story writer Dave Holmes that he based pieces of his character upon a confession from a movie executive he and Goldberg met with some 20 years ago: “I got into this job because I love the movies,” the exec allegedly told the young comedy writers, “and now I feel like it’s my job to ruin them.” (A line that, from the trailer, appears to have been used as direct inspiration for Rogen’s character’s fears.)
No matter your connection to the entertainment industry, chances are there is something in “The Studio” for you. Don’t miss the first two episodes of the series when they premiere Wednesday, March 26, on Apple TV+. The remaining eight episodes air weekly until the May 21 finale.

Packed with epic culinary showdowns, diabolical twists and countless allstar names, “Tournament of Champions VI” continues with a brand-new episode airing Sunday, March 23, on Food Network. “Pressure is amped up and emotions run high as chefs face wild challenges doled out by the Randomizer, face unknown opponents, and kitchen skills and abilities are pushed to the limit as successive rounds get more intense in the sudden-death culinary competition,” reads a season description, given by Food Network. “For the first time ever, all four former champions of the series will hang up their knives for new on-set assignments. After eight weeks and 31 grueling head-to-head battles, one talented chef will win it all and be
crowned champion, taking home the coveted Tournament of Champions belt and a $150,000 cash prize.”
In this upcoming episode, the final four battles of the first round take place. First up, “TOC” ringmaster Guy Fieri (“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”) welcomes chef Amanda Freitag (“Chopped”) and qualifier win-
ner Carlos Anthony (“Cutthroat Kitchen”) to the kitchen, where they fight to prove who has the sharpest skills. Afterwards, qualifier winner David Viana (“Chopped”) finds himself in a face-off against former “Tournament of Champions” finalist Tobias Dorzon (“Guy’s Grocery Games”), fighting for his life in the game.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO
“Holland” (2025)
Picturesque doesn’t always mean perfect. Set in the seemingly idyllic town of Holland, Michigan, the twisting, turning thriller film “Holland” premieres Thursday, March 27, on Prime Video. Called “wildly unpredictable” by Prime Video, the film follows Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman, “Lioness”), a teacher and homemaker living in the town modeled directly after its Dutch namesake — including fields of tulips, windmills, traditional dances and wooden shoes to tie the picture together. While Nancy’s life seems picture perfect, with her well-to-do husband, Fred (Matthew Macfadyen, “Succession”), and adorable son, Harry (Jude Hill, “Belfast,” 2021), cracks begin to appear in her happy reality. Tumbling into the midst of a dark and twisted secret, Nancy teams up with her friendly colleague Dave (Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”) to get to the bottom of their strange new reality. But the further they dig, the wilder their once-quiet lives become. From director Mimi Cave (“Fresh,” 2022) and writer Andrew Sodroski (“Manhunt”), “Holland” is produced by Kidman, Kate Churchill (“All the Old Knives,” 2022), Peter Dealbert (“Aftermath,” 2017) and
Per Saari (“Big Little Lies”). Jeff Pope (“Saturday Night,” 2024), Isaac Krasner (“Big Boys,” 2023), Lennon Parham (“Minx”) and Rachel Sennott (“Shiva Baby,” 2020) are also among the cast.

Q: How did the production team manage the crazy body changes that Tom Hanks goes through in “Cast Away”? Did he actually lose the weight, was it CGI or did he have a body double?
A: Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia,” 1993) is famously devoted to his craft. For proof, look no further than “Cast Away” (2000), for which he first put on weight to look like a regular, somewhat-out-of-shape working man, and then immediately had to cut it — 55 pounds’ worth, to be exact. (He also grew his own hair out for the role — that’s not a blond wig he’s wearing.)
For the production team, the trick to managing this transformation was to just take a whole year off.
In a 2000 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hanks said it was director Robert Zemeckis (who previously directed Hanks in 1994’s “Forrest Gump”) who came up with the bold idea. “Bob was like, ‘You know what we can do? If we really wanted to do this right, we’d make the
first half of this movie, then take a year off and make the second half!’”
While Hanks was starving himself for a year (“The only thing I did not give up was coffee,” he told EW), Zemeckis went off and did a whole other movie — the horror movie
“What Lies Beneath,” released a few months before “Cast Away” in 2000.
“Cast Away” was, of course, a critical and commercial smash, so it’s hard to remember that, beyond just the schedule hijinks, the movie was a huge gamble.
“I think that’s probably the great fear we have with ‘Cast Away,’” Hanks said in the same interview, which was published a week before the film’s release. “Because people are like, ‘I understand you’re on this island, and you don’t talk, and it’s just you, and you don’t do anything for an hour?’”
Two Oscars and $430 million at the box office show that the gamble paid off.
Q: What’s Tom Bergeron been doing since “Dancing With the Stars”?
A: Tom Bergeron (“America’s Funniest Home Videos”) has said flatly that he left “Dancing With the Stars” in 2020 because it booked a political figure on the show (former White House press secretary Sean
Spicer) during an election year.
Since then, he’s mostly been using his celebrity status for charitable ends. For example, he’s been hosting the annual Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF) telethon to benefit crew members in need of assistance, and this past Christmas, he did a live radio theater-style performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life” to benefit the Ed Asner Family Center.
He’s also signed up for Cameo, the digital service that al-
Q: Is Clark Gregg going to come back to the Agent Coulson role?
A: Actually, Clark Gregg (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) has never really left his long-running role in the Marvel cinematic universe (generally known as the MCU), but I know what you mean. And so the answer is no, there are no current plans for his next appearance. When you think about the MCU, you probably think about Chris Hemsworth (“Thor,” 2011)
Sudoku
lows you to pay a celebrity to record a message on your behalf. All of the proceeds from Bergeron’s Cameo messages go to the MPTF.
He also just appeared, as himself, in the heartwarming documentary “Finding Happy,” which hit the festival circuit last fall.
But the reality TV biz isn’t done with him. Last year, he received an honorary award from the Critics Choice Real TV Awards. He received it from none other than Alfonso Ribeiro (“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”), his successor as host of “Dancing With the Stars,” suggesting there are no lasting hard feelings on either side.
or maybe Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” 2011), but Gregg has been part of it for longer than both of them.
He first appeared as Phil Coulson, a high-ranking agent of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, in 2008’s “Iron Man,” the film that started the whole multibilliondollar MCU.
Coulson popped up in subsequent films and then got his own show, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” in 2013. Since that show ended in 2020, the character has appeared in a couple of other shows — most recently an episode of the animated series “What If...” in December 2024.
So far there’s no news of an-
other appearance in any of Marvel’s shows or films. It’s probably just a matter of time, though — as I said, Coulson is as foundational to the MCU as the Avengers are, so Marvel will surely come knocking again.
Until then, Gregg’s been busy with other stuff. Most notably, he just wrapped filming on “G20,” an action film about terrorists hijacking the G20 political summit — he’ll be playing U.S. Vice Presi-
dent Harold Moseley. It’s scheduled for release in April. He jumped straight from that to “The Artist,” a star-studded mystery series that’s currently filming (with no release date available).
