But it doesn’t have to be that way. Two new Batavia shops, The Tea Tree and Fawn Gifts recently opened with the goal of promoting self-care, as well as local, sustainable goods. The Tea Tree 29 N. River St., Batavia 630-425-3340 Missi Hartmann always knew she wanted her own brick-and-mortar tea shop, but it all became a reality in August when The Tea Tree opened after about five years in the making. It took several years of nonchalantly looking for a location before rigorously looking over the last year. The Tea Tree doesn’t just sell teas, but also oil and vinegar, spices, essential oils, honey, soaps and other assorted gifts. “I really wanted to incorporate all of the things I had been using in my own home,” Hartmann says. “A lot of places do spices in one store, teas in another store, and vinegars and oil in another. I never found one that incorporated them all.” After being a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, Hartmann decided to do just that. She always had a passion for tea, and says – due to her Irish heritage – that she has practically been drinking it since she was born. “There are a ton of health benefits,” Hartmann says. “It has antioxidants; it’s good for skin and helps metabolism.”

sold in her shop, noting that she has put more than three years of research into everything she sells. “If it’s not good enough to give to my children, it wasn’t good enough to bring into the shop,” Hartmann says. “Everything in here is quality.” In addition to the retail aspect of the shop, Hartmann also sells tea by the cup. There are 50 different varieties to choose from, and there is a seating area that includes a four-person table and six comfy chairs. Continued on page 6 >>>

Customers can usually spot Hartmann or her husband, Joe, there, or even their three children and family friends. Although opening her own business was difficult, Hartmann wouldn’t have it any other way. “I actually walked into this telling myself it was going to be a fun adventure, and I would have no regrets,” Hartmann says. “I didn’t want to go through life thinking about how I wanted to do it, but didn’t do it.” Fawn Gifts 2 E. Wilson St., Batavia www.fawngifts.com 630-326-9146 Just over a year ago, Fawn Gifts owner Brea Hayes was living in Chicago, working a completely different job and living a completely different life.

But she got burnt out.

“I was trying to decide what my new life path was and what I was going to do,” she says. That’s when she got support from various friends and family, who sent gifts and other words of encouragement to help Hayes get back on her feet. “I got stuff in the mail out of the blue,” Hayes says. “That’s really where the inspiration [for the shop] came from.” She launched Fawn Gifts with her friend, Stefin Steberl, and officially opened on Sept. 1. The shop focuses on self-care and supporting others while featuring local artists and creative minds from the Batavia and Fox Valley area. “We like the idea of staying local,” Hayes says.

“We’re an independent business. We want people to shop locally and buy from shops in the area.” The shop was initially set in motion when Hayes moved to Batavia with her fiancé and found a spot in the Thomle building, which the city owns and offers subsidized rent to help get businesses off the ground. “The chamber and community members have reached out and really supported me practically,” Hayes says. “We feel really welcome.” Hayes defines herself as a feminist and says it’s very important to her to be able say the shop is woman-run with feminist values. “I think it’s important to empower other people,” Hayes says. “In my opinion, feminism is the empowerment of women who do everything that men can do, as well.” Hayes tries to include books and other items that share values from various different backgrounds and perspectives, which includes spiritual books from across all faiths. “You can come in and find a birthday gift or holiday gift, but our focus is really about self-care and supporting others,” Hayes says. One of the things that Hayes really loves about the space is the community room upstairs, which is available to host meetings, gatherings and other special events for up to 30 people. The shop also will host special events upstairs, including a holiday market that will be open from Friday, Nov. 18, through Saturday, Dec. 24. The holiday market will feature an expanded inventory, holiday cards and gift guides, free gift-wrapping services and free beverages.

Pears Poached in Cabernet Sauvignon Ingredients: 1 bottle fruity cabernet sauvignon 1 cup sugar 1 vanilla bean 1 tablespoon mulling spices 4 ripe pears, you want them to give slightly when pressed 1/3 cup mascarpone 1 tablespoon honey Fresh mint for garnish Directions: 1. Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan. Add sugar and spices. Split the vanilla bean and scrape the seeds. Add both the seeds and the pod to the pan. There is a good demonstration of this technique here: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=bICPn7Ifrh8 2. Place the sauce pan over medium heat and bring to a boil. 3. Reduce heat and simmer until all of the sugar is dissolved. 4. Reduce the heat to low and bring the poaching liquid to 180 degrees. You can use a meat thermometer to take the temperature of the liquid. Just make sure that you aren’t touching the pan and that the stem is submerged up to the divot. 5. While the liquid is cooking, core and peel the pears. Add the pears to the pan once the wine mixture has reached 180 degrees. 6. Poach for 60 minutes or until the pears are soft and easily pierced with a sharp knife. Test the pears along the bottom so that you don’t see the mark when you go to plate your dessert. 7. While the pears are poaching, stir together the mascarpone and the honey. Refrigerate covered. 8. When they are done, remove the pears to a plate with a slotted spoon. Let cool completely. Turn the heat to medium-high and reduce the poaching liquid by half. Refrigerated until completely cool. 9. Fill the pears with the mascarpone mixture using a pastry bag or a Ziploc bag with a corner cut off. Refrigerate covered until ready to use. 10. To serve, ladle a small amount of the reduced poaching liquid on to the plate. Place the pear in the center of the sauce. If desired, garnish the pear with a mint leaf that is tucked into the top of the pear where the mascarpone is showing.

Christmas film character party Holiday luau

Why not host a Christmas in Hawaii luau in the middle of December? If you love this time of year, then it could be just the winter warm-up you need. Given this season’s untimely pleasant temps, you might even be able to host part of the shindig outside! Its like a reverse of Christmas in July.

Festivus

Is your group filled with ‘90s pop culture fans? If so, Festivus could be perfect for you!Introduced on the TV show “Seinfeld,” Festivus is a made-up gathering that takes place Dec. 23, and it could be the perfect remedy for those who get annoyed with the commercialism of the holiday season. According to the show, the event kicks off with the airing of grievances, followed by a non-descript meal, such as meatloaf paired with alcohol. Then, the Festivus fun continues with a feats of strength competition. The only decoration for this event

If you LOVE the holiday season, why not go the extra mile by hosting a Christmas movie-themed party, where everyone dresses up as their favorite holiday movie character? Cousin Eddie in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” or Will Ferrell’s character, Buddy the Elf, from the film “Elf.” With a little research and a whole lot of movie nostalgia, you’ll find that the options for great costume ideas are endless. For added spirit, screen some holiday movie classics in the background, instead of your standard tunes.

Gingerbread House Decorating Competition Do your friends and family enjoy a little competition? Try a gingerbread house decorating contest. The kits come fairly inexpensive and are readily available around the holidays. Pit couples against each other, or for a family party – maybe

Safety tips for the extreme holiday decorator Taking holiday decorating to extremes is fun. But accidents can happen, especially when using a lot of electronic decorations on the outside of the house. Follow these safety precautions for outdoor decorating from CSA Group, a leader in electronic product testing and certification, to help make sure your house gets noticed for the right reasons: * Put your faith in the magic of the holidays but don’t fall for fakes: Whether it’s a waving Santa, rocking sleigh, or light-up Rudolph, avoid counterfeit electronic decorations that haven’t been certified for safe use. Look for the mark from an accredited certification organization like CSA Group

on light strings, extension cords, and animated displays. Make sure they are marked for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. * Keep old holiday traditions, not old holiday lights: Carefully inspect light strings each year. Discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. * Sparkle without the spark: Turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring. Unplug light strings before replacing bulbs and check to ensure replacement bulbs match the voltage and wattage of the original. To avoid a shock from damaged wire, use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold

light strings in place. * Stay dry: Keep electrical connectors for outdoor lights above ground, out of water, and away from metal gutters. Connect outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI). These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing ground leakage and cutting electrical power. * Don’t be silly with strings: Make decorating a family activity by planning this year’s theme with the kids, but don’t let children or pets play with light strings. * Don’t overextend yourself: Use heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically-animated displays and don’t overload extension cords. * It’s more than a faux-pas to keep lights up all year: Outdoor holiday lights are made for seasonal use only; extended exposure can lead to damage. After the holiday season, take down decorations and store them in their original packaging to keep the proper use instructions for next year. You can find more safety tips at www.csaholiday.com

Hanging stockings with care Mantles adorned with garland and other holiday trinkets make fireplaces come alive for Christmas. That magic is only enhanced by hanging Christmas stockings, which are just waiting to be filled with goodies for good girls and boys. Those without a fireplace often hang stockings from windowsills and stairway banisters. No written record exists to explain the origin of hanging stockings on fireplace mantles. Despite this, many people link the tradition to a tale about St. Nicholas. As that story goes, St. Nicholas was traveling through a village when he overheard the plight of three women. They were poor, and their father could not afford an ample dowry to marry them off. Rather than have them end up spinsters, St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of coins through a window (or down the chimney, depending on which version of the story you read or hear), and they were captured in the girls’ stockings hanging to dry by the fire. The family was overjoyed to have received such riches. Soon news traveled about the mysterious money in stockings, and other children left out stockings for St. Nicholas to capture their own gifts. The tradition has transformed over the years, and

   

now many children hang stockings by the chimney with the expectation that the stockings will be filled with gifts from Santa. Traditions once suggested that only gifts from Santa were left in stockings, while gifts placed beneath the tree were from family, but that has since changed. Stockings are now meant to hold small gifts while larger items are placed under the tree. Stockings should be hung away from the flames of the fire as a safety precaution. Some children even like to hang individual stockings on their bedposts instead of on a fireplace mantle.

Enjoy an eco-friendly holiday season The color green is synonymous with the holiday season, as Christmas trees, mistletoe and holiday wreaths feature prominently throughout the month of December. But there are ways to make this holiday season even greener. Going green around the house can save homeowners substantial amounts of money and benefit the planet in various ways. Yet come the holiday season, many people unintentionally eschew eco-friendly practices in an effort to make their homes as festive as possible. Fortunately,

there are several ways to enjoy an eco-friendly holiday season. • Choose LED holiday lights. Holiday lighting displays help make the season even more special. But traditional incandescent holiday lights consume considerable amounts of energy and burn out much more quickly than more eco-friendly alternatives. According to Energy.gov, LED holiday lights consume less energy than incandescent holiday lights, and they’re also safer because LED lights burn cool, reducing the risk of combustion. In addition, LED lights are more resistant to breaking than incandescent bulbs, which should please homeowners who want to avoid broken or burned out bulbs that can ruin holiday lighting displays. • Get creative with wrapping paper. The United States Environmental Protection Agency notes that household waste increases by 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That translates to about one million extra tons of waste in the roughly five-week holiday season. Much of that waste is wrapping paper. Instead of purchasing holiday wrapping paper that will ultimately end up in landfills, wrap gifts in reusable gift bags or old newspapers lying around the house. If you must use wrapping paper, choose recycled paper. In addi-

CRITTERS P E T

tion, save bows, ribbons and undamaged wrapping paper to use again next season. • Turn down the thermostat. Holiday music fans know that the weather outside can be frightful during the holiday season. But holiday hosts inviting friends and family over this year can turn down the thermostat to save energy and make conditions inside the home more comfortable. Extra bodies inside the house will warm the place up, allowing homeowners to turn down the thermostat during parties. If you’re traveling for the season, program your thermostat so you’re not heating an empty home. • Send e-cards. Holiday cards are a tradition in many families. But paper cards contribute heavily to that extra million tons of holiday-related waste noted by the EPA. In lieu of paper cards, send e-cards. E-cards can be emailed to friends and family, saving the cost of postage and the fuel required to deliver those cards. In addition, e-cards save families the hassle of signing each individual card. The holiday season is not the most eco-friendly time of year, but celebrants can take steps to reduce their carbon footprints between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
