LOMBARD – The Lombard Village Board of Trustees last week approved an ordinance that will freeze the village’s tax levy at its current rate. Trustees voted 4-1 at the Nov. 21 regular village board meeting to approve the ordinance. Trustee Mike Fugiel cast the lone dissenting vote. Trustee Bill Ware had an excused absence from the meeting. With the approval, Lombard homeowners will not see an increase in their property tax next year. The total village tax levy will remain at $8.7 million, village director of finance Tim Sexton confirmed. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the village has frozen the property tax

rate, Sexton said. Trustee Peter Breen, chairman of the village’s finance committee, said Monday that the village is in good financial standing, and that freezing the tax levy was the right move to make for residents. “As we looked at our particular needs as a village, we are in a place where we don’t need the [additional] money,” Breen said. Too many taxing bodies annually raise their tax rate without careful consideration to the need, Breen added. “The default position should be to [try] to not raise taxes, but instead the default position has been to increase taxes at every opportunity,” he said. Differing tax dollars means altering the timeline on capital improvement projects in
the village, in particular, sewer improvements needed to alleviate flooding, Fugiel said. “I don’t feel that freezing the tax rate is the best thing to do in this economy,” Fugiel said. Additional concerns over the state’s ongoing pension system also factored into his vote, Fugiel said. During discussion at the board’s Nov. 7 meeting, president Keith Giagnorio told trustees he hoped they did their homework, and cautioned that they understand the ramifications of not passing the levy. Citing that 90 percent of calls he receives from residents are service-related, Giagnorio said he hopes the freeze will not affect village services. Giagnorio, at the time, said that if a tax freeze was approved, he would track it with Sexton.
Party wagons are available free of charge once a year for village residents. The wagons include 10 tables, 100 chairs, a 10x10-foot canopy, large charcoal grill, a beanbag game set and a sound system, as well as a drop-off and pick-up service. Submission forms must be returned by Dec. 20 to the Sunset Knolls Recreation Center, 820 S. Finley Road. A lottery will be held Jan. 2 to determine the winners. For more information, visit www.lombardparks.org or call 630-620-7322.
Donations can be dropped off through Dec. 6. Items collected will be delivered to the Washington-area by Lombard Fire Department and staff from partnering group International Village Apartments. Monetary donations are the highest priority, but donations including clothing, pet food, water, first-aid kits, power strips and phone chargers are also greatly needed. Tornado relief donation drop-off sites include the International Village Apartments, 1300 S. Finley Road, Lombard Fire Station No. 1, 50 E. St. Charles Road and Lombard Fire Station No. 2, 2020 S. Along with communication, a village manager needs to be able to identify various policy options so that elected officials can make informed decisions, Niehaus said. Niehaus grew up in Elmhurst, and said he looks forward to returning to DuPage County to be closer to family and friends. His parents live in Lombard. The village began its search a couple months ago with roughly 40 candidates, Village President Keith Giagnorio said Monday. While there was a number of great candidates, Niehaus
was the right fit for the job, Giagnorio said. “He really impressed myself and the board,” Giagnorio said. “He is very enthusiastic and he was well-rounded in what he was handling in Tinley Park.” In Tinley Park, Niehaus oversaw the expansion of the Tinley Park Convention Center, directed the redevelopment and construction of two Metra railroad stations and also helped implement neighborhood drainage improvement programs, which resulted in the removal of more than 1,000 homes from FEMA’s reg-
ulatory flood plain. Niehaus holds a Master of Public Administration from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts from Augustana College. Niehaus’ salary with the Village of Lombard will be $165,000, according to a news release from the village. The Lombard Village Board is set to accept Niehaus’ employment contract at its regular meeting Thursday. Lombard’s previous village manager, David Hulseberg, announced his retirement in June. Hulseberg served as village manager since 2008.

LOMBARD – The Lombard Village Board of Trustees has chosen its new village manager. Scott Niehaus, the current village manager of Tinley Park, was named Lombard’s next village manager on Nov. 22. Niehaus will begin his new role on Jan. 21. Niehaus, 42, brings more than 20 years of experience to his new position. He has served as Tinley Park’s village manager since 2003, and was assistant village manager for four years prior to that. Nie-
haus also worked for the village of Elk Grove for six years. Maintaining effective communication between village officials, staff, citizens and the local business community is an important part of a village manager’s job duties, Niehaus Scott said. Niehaus “Part of my management philosophy is that a successful leader needs to be adept at both sending and receiving information,” he said.

The new Lombard Police Department website, OffenderWatch, allows residents to view the addresses of registered sex offenders living in the village.
Lombard police launch local sex offender website SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – The Lombard Police Department last week launched a website that will allow village residents to track registered sex offenders. “OffenderWatch” was created to allow residents to view the addresses of registered sex offenders living in the village, to sign up for email alerts if a registered sex offender moves into their neighborhood and to find other safety tips. Overall, the website “serves as a community notification tool to manage and monitor the whereabouts of local sex offenders,” accord-
ing to police officials. Residents can also send anonymous letters directly to the police department if they know of a registered sex offender living in their neighborhood who is not listed. OffenderWatch can be found by going to the village of Lombard website at www. villageoflombard.org and using the following navigation: About, Police Department, Sex Offender Information, Local Offender/Safety Information. As the need grows in our communities, so does the Lombard-Villa Park Food Pantry. Located inside the First United Methodist Church in Lombard, the pantry originally served just eight to 10 people a week when it was established in 1982. Now it serves between 37 and 45 people a day. Thank you for giving families a place to go. Jeanne Schultz Angel’s contributions in Lombard will be remembered for a long time. Angel had served as the executive director of the Lombard Historical Society since 2006 before recently taking over as the new executive director of the Illinois Association of Museums. Her colleagues said she brought a cooperative spirit and creative flare to the job. She has certainly been an big part of Lombard’s history.

I could not help but notice a unique and noteworthy event during the recent Glenbard East High School homecoming festivities. Glenbard East student Kumba Queewa, a refugee from Sierra Leone, West Africa, was selected as homecoming queen. Kumba is a charming, talented and involved student and was clearly deserving of this honor. What was amazing to me was, despite Kumba not matching the typical hometown girl profile for a homecoming queen, the student body selected her anyway. Kumba being chosen as homecoming queen was symbolic of the larger redeeming values we support as resiCOMMUNITY dents of DuPage County. VOICE These larger redeeming David values are being reflected by Larson the following: • Our community is home to one of the largest international relief organizations, World Relief. Hundreds of distressed families in transition have been received and embraced. World Relief DuPage provides refugee services and services related to initial resettlement, employment, immigrant legal issues, education and more. • Each of our public schools provides exemplary English as second language programs for those new to our country as they make the transition to being proficient in English. • Our Navigating Healthy Families/Glenbard Parent Series has developed programming of importance for all parents and guardians. We are offering 11 GPS programs in Spanish, and we have translation headsets (all languages) that can be reserved for any of our 40 workshops scheduled for the 2013-14 school year. • Our faith-based community has worked cooperatively in coordinating Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS), which provides overnight housing, an employment program and permanent supportive housing. • Our schools provide a multitude of clubs and student organizations that promote cross-cultural awareness and communication, networking, resource sharing among members and diversity of culture. Inclusiveness describes how people from all backgrounds are involved, how their perspectives are valued and how their needs are understood. Because adults in DuPage County are modeling what inclusion means, it is no surprise that our students follow their lead. So why wouldn’t Kumba be chosen as homecoming queen? She is an engaged, active and thriving member of the senior class. What a great selection for homecoming queen!

Elmhurst Elks member Tony Dardano said the Thanksgiving Dinner event is one of the most rewarding of the year for the lodge. “You don’t understand the full impact until the thank

ELMHURST – For about two decades, the Elmhurst Elks Lodge No. 1531 has been assembling Thanksgiving dinners for families who otherwise might not have one. “I try to be as generous with all of them as I can,” said Michael Baren, the lodge’s Thanksgiving Dinner Chairman. “I’d rather give five churches 30 or 35 meals each, than one church 161 meals.” They aren’t turkey TV dinners either. Each Thanksgiving Dinner box includes a frozen turkey, a fresh pumpkin pie, stuffing, jellied cranberries, mixed vegetables, white potatoes, sweet potatoes and dinner rolls. “They didn’t skimp one penny on what they did, and we really appreciate it,” said Carol Montgomery Fate, Outreach Coordinator at First Church of Lombard where 35 of the Elks dinners went. He estimates that if each

Continued from page 11 Elks Association state president. The Elks receive thank you letters but rarely meet the people they’re serving since the meals are distributed first to churches. “I don’t really need to know who it goes to,” Baren said, explaining the families have a relationship with the churches or community centers where the meals are distributed. The Saturday before Thanksgiving, the Elks pick up the refrigerated items early in the morning. Then about 75 volunteers from churches, the Villa Park, Lombard and Elmhurst police departments, students and Elks members gather in the lodge to execute an efficient packing process that’s been refined over the years. “We have great need within this community,” said Pam Stefik, the Immaculate Conception director of Christian ministry. Immaculate Conception
Parish received food for 30 dinners from the Elks, but they used that food to supplement donations they collect from their parish, Visitation Parish and Journey Church to create 120 baskets. Those baskets were then distributed to people on lists at the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry, Greencastle senior low-income housing and Catholic Charities. “We always put more food in the basket,” said Stefik. “It’s not just a Thanksgiving meal. It’s food that will last them for a few days after.” The First Church of Lombard also used the 35 meals from the Elks to supplement the holiday meals they distribute from The Outreach House. “Basically, the Elks have allowed us to double what we give out,” said Montgomery Fate. Baren hopes that even though the Elks can’t supply everyone with a Thanksgiving dinner who needs one, that by making the effort, others might feel inspired to help. “I think what it does is, it raises awareness of what’s going on,” Baren said.

8SOUND OFF Veterans Day is not a holiday? I’m calling out the village of Downers Grove. Apparently, on Veterans Day, the village of Downers Grove didn’t feel that that was a holiday. So on all their parking signs that said “No parking, except Saturdays, Sundays or holidays” you would get a ticket if you’re parked there. When I went to the police department I was told by a dispatcher it must be a mistake. So I filled out a form and a police officer called me back. He had to look it up to see if it was a holiday. The chief of police then advised me that Downers Grove doesn’t recognize Veterans Day as an actual holiday as it is not on their approved list of holidays. But the day after Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas are considered holidays according to Downers Grove. I think this is outrageous that they don’t honor our vets and consider a federal holiday an actual parking day.
Clean the drains? The village of Downers Grove is advertising in our little Village Corner that they want the fee payers to help keep the storm grates free and clear of leaves and other debris, but excuse me, isn’t that why we pay a fee for stormwater management? Call the village or attend a village

Sick of Toronto mayor I, for one, am getting a little sick of all the slamming of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Why don’t we discuss when our mayor of the capitol of the United States of America was caught smoking crack. Remember Marion Barry? Some of you weren’t alive then, but I remember it quite well. And they practically just slapped him on the wrist, and next thing you know he’s running for office again and gets put back in. Isn’t that a slap in the face tor all American people? I know some states you can be elected for office as a felon, but come on let’s hear a little bit about him and hear more about that situation.
Rake your leaves I’ve been raking my leaves all the time only to have my neighbor’s leaves, which they don’t rake, blow into my yard. Come on neighbor, you’re a nice guy, please do your job.

Scarletti’s: Cozy atmosphere, comfort food DOWNERS GROVE – With its quaint setting and madefrom-scratch fare, Scarletti’s Italian Kitchen is a great escape, whether it be from wintry temps, a stressful workday or the craze of holiday shopping. A colleague and I headed out to the downtown Downers Grove restaurant on a recent weeknight. Once we stepped into the cozy restaurant, any leftover frustration from the rush hour traffic and chilly weather was replaced with ease from the warmly lit atmosphere and tasty scents wafting from Scarletti’s kitchen. The attractive dining room makes for an intimate setting, whether you’re with a significant other, family, friends or a business partner, and overlooks the city right along Main Street with large windows. Once seated, we soon were greeted with Scarletti’s customary basket of bread and marinara dipping sauce. It was a nice change-up from the standard bread-and-oil setups at most Italian restaurants, and nearly made for an appetizer on its own. Still, we had to try the bruschetta appetizer, which proved a good call with its combination of fresh tomato and basil, prepared with a balsamic drizzle for added style and flavor points. For our main courses, my colleague, in the mood for a hearty, home-cooked meal, opted for the Chianti Braised Short Ribs, an interesting selection he was very happy with. The boneless short ribs are slathered in a red wine reduction sauce, served on a bed of whipped potatoes and topped with a seasonal vegetable puree. I went with a classic that’s a must-try for me whenever I dine at an Italian restaurant that’s new to me: the Chicken Parmesan. The entree had very generous portions of chicken breast and a side of pasta. The chicken was tender and its marinara sauce proved a perfect complement. If you’re partial

Montini eyes undefeated season, fifth straight title By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Montini is one win away from its first ever undefeated season. The Broncos beat Sycamore 42-20 in a Class 5A state semifinal Saturday afternoon in Lombard to make a fifth straight trip to the state final. Montini, now 13-0, will face Sacred Heart-Griffin in the 5A final at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb Saturday at 10 a.m. Despite winning five state titles under coach Chris Andriano, the Broncos have never captured one with an undefeated record. “That was our No. 1 goal going into the season,” Montini senior wide receiver Tyler Tumpane said of going undefeated. “We’re one game away so we really want to finish this off.”

Up next: Montini vs. Sacred Heart-Griffin When: 10 a.m. Saturday Where: Huskie Stadium, DeKalb Records: Montini 13-0; Sacred Heart-Griffin 13-0 Outlook: This is technically a meeting between two undefeated teams, but Sacred Heart-Griffin lost 38-33 to Rochester in Week 2. The Cyclones were awarded the win via forfeit after
it was later discovered Rochester was using an ineligible player. Other than that game, SHG has won the other 12 games by over 45 points per contest. Senior wide receiver Malik Turner, an Illinois recruit, has 1,311 yards and 22 touchdown catches. Junior offensive lineman Quinn Oseland also has Division I offers.
Junior quarterback Gabe Green has racked up over 3,000 yards passing and is the team’s second leading rusher with 610 yards on the ground. Four Cyclones have at least seven rushing touchdowns, including Green, Sam Sargent (652 yards, 12 TDs) and Anthony Dinello (457 yards, 17 TDs).
The previous two times Montini went 9-0 in the regular season, 1995 and 2008, the Broncos lost in the quarterfi-
nals. “That would be something special, but it’s all about one game now,” Andriano said.
Montini led throughout against Sycamore. The Broncos scored on their first two drives to take a 14-0 lead and
took a 28-14 advantage into halftime. Matt Brachmann and Wills added second half scores to put the game away. Montini allowed an opponent to reach 20 points for just the fourth time this season, but one of those touchdowns was a defensive score for Sycamore. Montini’s defense got interceptions from Derrick Curry, Tyler Quick and Michael Reilley. “We’ve had a great season,” Andriano said. “We’ve done the right things and it’s time to hopefully get it done again.” Defensive end Dylan Thompson reveled in the cold weather, electing not to wear sleeves or gloves. The Ohio State recruit will have one more game in the cold at the state final. “I love playing in the cold,” Thompson said. “When you’re this amped up for a game you really don’t get cold.”

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT HUBARKUSH.COM
Can Bears’ defense stop Adrian Peterson? Hub Arkush
For the most part, things have not gone well for the Minnesota Vikings since the Bears last saw them in Soldier Field the second week of the season. But after all kinds of turmoil at the quarterback position because of injury and the surprising signing of Josh Freeman, who then failed miserably in his one start before suffering a concussion, the Vikings look an awful lot like the club the Bears barely got by in Week 2 with their 31-30 victory on a last-minute touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett. Christian Ponder appears to be firmly re-entrenched as the starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson will be coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, where the Vikings played the Packers
to a tie in overtime. Most of the biggest questions in this matchup will be about the Bears’ mindset after the egg they laid in St. Louis on Sunday, and whether they have any hope at all of slowing Peterson with the worst run defense in the NFL. Peterson rushed for 146 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown in five quarters of football, and while he hasn’t approached his 2012 heroics, he was still the NFL’s second-leading rusher before the Redskins-49ers game Monday night with 997 total yards, a 4.4 average and 10 touchdowns. Ponder has been a threat on the ground with 34 scrambles for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s completing 64.5 percent of his passes for a 78.7 passer rating, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. While his passing numbers on the season don’t scare you, he did complete 21 of 30 throws for 233 yards and a 103.9 passer rating Sunday at Lambeau. Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson have been up and down, but are
reliable targets for Ponder when the Vikings are playing well. Cordarrelle Patterson is a factor in the kick return game, but is still struggling to find himself as a receiver. On defense, the Vikings have struggled all year. They are 30th in total defense, 14th versus the run but 29th against the pass. They are 23rd in interception percentage and 26th rushing the quarterback. On the defensive line, Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are former all pros who are both still capable of having big games, but don’t do it on a regular basis any more. LeTroy Guion and Brian Robison still are starting as well, and this is the unit that helped key the Vikings playoff run in 2012, but they have all struggled this year. Chad Greenway is still the guy you have to identify on Minnesota’s defense, and he’ll make plays all over the field, but Erin Henderson in the middle and Marvin Mitchell on the weak side are guys the Bears should be able to exploit. Josh Robinson and Chris Cook are
third- and second-round draft picks, respectively, on the corners who are both athletic and fast enough but terribly inconsistent, which is why this team is 29th in pass defense. The safeties, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo, aren’t bad forcing the run, but do struggle in coverage. At the end of the day for the Bears, this one comes down to what are they going to do about Peterson? After going off for a 140 on the ground week nine against the Cowboys, Peterson had been held in check by the Redskins and Seahawks before exploding again in Green Bay. The unfortunate fact is if the Vikings climb on Peterson’s back, there is little the Bears will be able to do but get into a shootout. The good news is that Josh McCown continues to flourish in Marc Trestman’s offense, and the Bears have a lot more weapons on offense than Minnesota, giving them an excellent chance to prevail by piling up points, which is exactly what happened the last time they got together.

THANKSGIVING DAY PREVIEW Packers at Lions, 11:30 a.m. This game not only features several intriguing fantasy matchups, it also is pivotal to the NFC North. The big
Stafford should be productive against the Packers’ 18thranked defense. The Packers equally are mediocre versus the run and the pass, so start Reggie Bush.
Raiders at Cowboys, 3:30 p.m. The late-afternoon game should be a bonanza for Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Raiders’ defense ranks No. 8 against the run, but a dismal No. 25 versus the pass. It would be a surprise if Romo didn’t crest 300 yards and throw at least two touchdown passes, probably more. Jason Witten also is a must start. Terrance Williams has disappeared, and
all other Cowboys’ receivers would seem to be afterthoughts at this point. Although the Raiders are respectable against the run – sticking with the idea that this will be a shootout – start DeMarco Murray and Dan Bailey. The Cowboys actually have the weaker defense in this contest, ranking last in points and passing yards. Assuming Darren McFadden will be in street clothes, Rashard Jennings is a great play. If Denarius Moore returns, he is a solid play. If not, take a close look at Rod Streater.
Steelers at Ravens, 7:30 p.m. Two good, but not great, defenses face off in the night game. Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 22 fantasy points over the past four weeks. He has been up and down, however. He might be looking at something around 15 points this week. The Steelers still drive fantasy owners crazy
with their running-back rotation, but Le’Veon Bell is clearly the best option. This week, he’s probably looking at 10 to 14 points. Antonio Brown is a top-five fantasy receiver and an obvious play. After Brown, it gets dicey. Jerricho Cotchery had emerged during weeks 9-11, but he went without a reception against the Browns. After lighting up the Bears in week 11, Ray Rice reverted to his 2013 form against the Jets (16 carries for 30 yards). Although the Jets are stout against the run, it’s time to look at Rice as a No. 3 fantasy back or flex option. In smaller leagues, he’s probably not worth a roster spot. After kicker Justin Tucker and receiver Torrey Smith, the Ravens do not offer much in this game. Given his recent production, it’s hard to recommend Joe Flacco. Call it a gut instinct: He scores 20-plus points against Pittsburgh.

The bye weeks are over, but week 13 presents a new challenge for fantasy owners: Three Thursday games. Ah, Thanksgiving! Nothing beats spending time with loved ones, enjoying a fine feast … and getting a jump on your fantasy opponent! I’m not suggesting that Aunt Mildred’s discussions aren’t riveting, but it’s always fun to have players going on Thanksgiving. A closer look at Thursday’s games will help you determine which players can help your team and those who are likely to be … turkeys (ouch).
question, of course, is whether Aaron Rodgers will play. As of Monday morning, his status was uncertain. Matt Flynn came to the rescue last week against Minnesota, taking over for a struggling Scott Tolzien. Obviously, the Packers are a stronger play if it’s Rodgers, but either quarterback should produce. Flynn seemed to have a connection with Jarrett Boykin, who hauled in five receptions and a touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense is ranked No. 28 against the pass. Boykin, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are solid starts. Kicker Mason Crosby also is in for a good day. It might be tougher for Eddie Lacy – Detroit is No. 4 against the run – but we still like the talented rookie this week. The Lions are among the league’s dumbest teams. They also are one of the most talented. Calvin Johnson is an obvious start and Matthew

Hit hard by graduation, Rams look to rebound Glenbard East Rams
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The contrast from a year ago is sharp at Glenbard East, but the talent is still there. The Rams lost four starters from last year’s conference and regional champion squad. Three players from that group are playing in college: Marvin Grant-Clark (Maryville), Tahron Harvey (Benedictine) and Mike Kjeldsen (Carthage). Currently in place for the Rams are a younger group of players that have good upside, but may struggle to get consistent play and wins early in the season. Senior guard Jaron Hall is the only starter and major contributor back from a year ago. Hall has great speed and can light up the scoreboard in a hurry. He scored 29 points in the Rams’ 67-61 loss to Glenbard West on Tuesday. “He had a big year last year for us and he’s much better as a playmaker, as a scorer, as a leader,” Glenbard East coach Scott Miller said. “He’s got to continue to be that on the floor.” Spencer Trefilek is the only other senior returner joining Hall in the starting lineup. Glenbard East’s Jaron Hall gets ready to shoot against Glenbard North during the District 87 Thanksgiving Tournament Monday. Hall is the Rams’ only returning starter from last year. comer Darryl Jones also started in early games. Senior Tyler Behrendt is another returner in the rotation, which runs 10 deep so far. The excitement in the program is around the young talent on the team, namely
freshman Michael Finley. Finley is the first freshman Miller has had on the varsity team from the start of the season. The 6-foot-2 guard is starting and scored 14 against Glenbard West. “He’s going to be a special
player for us,” Miller said. “He’s a big, strong kid.” Sophomore guard Jack Grigat is also starting with 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Patrick Peterkin and sophomore guard Terrance Lakes coming off the bench for
now. “I think our young guys are coming along just fine,” Miller said. “They play hard. They’re listening. We got a long way to go. “As long as they keep listening and they don’t bring their head down, we’re going to grow. This team, the sky is the limit. We don’t want to be playing our best now. We want to just keep getting better. We’re definitely going to improve.” In addition to their loss to Glenbard West, the Rams fell to Glenbard North 62-46 on Monday.

Broncos hope to continue success McNamara takes Montini Broncos Coach: Brian Opoka Conference: Suburban Christian Gold 2012-13 record: 19-9 (8-2 SCC Gold) Next game: Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Aurora Christian tournament Top returners: Matt Brachmann sr. F; Jack Brady sr. G; Mike Delaplane sr. G; Tom McGillicuddy sr. G Promising newcomers: Tom Hyland so. F/C; Mike Mooney jr. F; Terrence Williams so. G Outlook: The Broncos had a breakout season last year, but fell just short
of the Suburban Christian Gold title. Matching that success will be tough this year with the departure of all-conference forward Simmie Cobbs. Cobbs transferred back to Oak Park River Forest after averaging a double-double for the Broncos last winter. Montini’s other interior presence last year, Matt Brachmann, does return. The 6-foot-3 senior will join the team late after playing wide receiver for the state-bound football team, but was an all-conference forward last season. Sophomore Tom Hyland is 6-foot-
5 and will aid the Broncos inside. Sophomore guard Terrence Williams and junior forward Mike Mooney are expected to join the regular rotation. Seniors Jack Brady, Mike Delaplane and Tom McGillicuddy give coach Brian Opoka plenty of experienced options at guard. Brady ran the offense last year and will need to be a stabilizing player at point guard. The Broncos got past IMSA 55-42 in the opener Tuesday with 10 points from McGillicuddy and eight points and seven rebounds from Mike Mooney.

GIRLS SWIMMING Addison Trail/Willowbrook co-op Kelly McNamara claimed a second place medal in the IHSA state meet at New Trier on Saturday. The Willowbrook junior was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.11 seconds. McNamara finished behind only Fenwick’s Texas-bound Mimi Schneider. The AT-WB team also had a relay in Friday’s prelims. McNamara, freshman Annalise Morrone, junior Molly Hill and senior Molly Kuenstler were 22nd in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Addison Trail/Willowbrook co-op | Junior | Swimming Why McNamara was selected: McNamara was second in the 100-yard butterfly at the state meet at New Trier on Saturday. Willowbrook junior Kelly McNamara represented the Addison Trail/Willowbrook co-op at the state swim meet last weekend. McNamara, who has been swimming since she was six years old, was second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.11 seconds. She made her third appearance at state and improved on finishing sixth last year. McNamara, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about taking a medal home from the state meet. What was your reaction when you touched the wall in second place? During prelims I was seeded second so it was kind of nice to see that I stayed where I was. Were you surprised when you were second in the prelims? I didn’t expect it. I was really excited when I saw it on the board.
What was your expectation heading into state? Last year I got sixth so I just wanted to do better than that. What’s it like to swim at state in that wild atmosphere? It’s so crazy, especially at finals. It’s different than any other meet I’ve been to. The girl who finished ahead of you was a senior. Is it your goal to win next year? I haven’t really thought about it, but it would be nice to win. Are you still working out or do you now have some off time? I’ve gotten the past couple days off, but I’m starting again. It’s nice to eat what you want and sleep in. Is it tough to maintain the dedicated workout schedule? It’s hard. We have morning practices and practices after school. It’s a long season.

Accolades, wins pile up for NCC players SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The North Central football team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs with an easy 63-7 victory over Albion College (Mich.) on Saturday. The Cardinals, who improved to 11-0 on the fall, will now host University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the second round of the playoffs at noon Saturday. Ryan Kent (York) rushed for 81 yards on 14 carries and scored on a one-yard run. The Cardinals’ offense was in high gear as it churned out 557 yards, bringing their sea-
son total on offense to 5,585. Heading into the second round game, NCC has scored 506 points and is just 18 points shy of setting the program’s single-season scoring record. Prior to the playoff game, Nick Slezak earned College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Football Player of the Week, along with teammate Nick Dace, for the week of Nov. 18. After leading the Cardinals with eight tackles, including a career-high four tackles for loss, and scoring North Central’s first defensive touchdown of the season on a 22-yard fumble return in the first peri-
od against Augustana, Slezak snagged his second straight Player of the Week honor. The CCIW all-conference team was announced Nov. 19 and the Cardinals had several representatives. Shane Dierking was named Don Larson Defensive Player of the Year as he earned his third CCIW all-conference honor. It was the sixth time an NCC player earned the Defensive Player of the Year award. Also joining Dierking on the defensive first team were Douglas and Slezak. Kent was named all-CCIW second team on offense.

prepare your pie crust.
pour the batter carefully into the crust, without spilling it.
If it was frozen, follow the instructions on the package for defrosting. If you are making one from scratch, follow the steps in the recipe. Once you have a crust ready to go in a baking tin, pour the pie mixture into the center of the crust, then even it out across the crust.

it’s cooking time! Have an adult help you place the pie in the oven (use your oven mitts). Bake the pie at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Then cool the oven down to 350, and bake another 45 minutes.
5
when do you know your pie is done? When
a fork or knife can be inserted in the center of it and comes out clean, and there is a nice brown color (not burned) to your crust.
6
Let it cool. Put it in a
safe place for a couple of hours until the pie reaches room temperature.
7
serve! Cut the pie into
slices, and serve on festive plates. Offer your guests whipped cream they can put on top of their pie.
