Giagnorio recaps success, looks forward to 2014 By MATTHEW PIECHALAK

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Business development and retention was a primary focus Wednesday afternoon as Lombard President Keith Giagnorio gave his first State of the Village Address before a full room comprised of village officials, staff and community members. “Through our Community Development Department, the village will continue to make economic development a priority,” Giagnorio said during a roughly 20-minute speech at the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2014 State of the Village Address and Luncheon at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse. Giagnorio, who was elected last spring, referenced three large commercial vacancies that were filled last year by The Dump, 2860 S. Highland Ave., Family Dollar, 727 S. Main St., and Baxton Furniture, 222 W. Roosevelt Road, and added that the village continues to discuss opportunities for new tenants within the former Kmart and Mr Z’s. “While these occupancies are also tied to some elements outside of the village’s control, we are staying in touch with the appropriate parties and are ready to assist new businesses,” Giagnorio said.

For more information on the village’s long-term goals, read about the Lombard Comprehensive Plan draft on Page 6.

Additionally, the village is committed to working with the Lombard Town Centre to fill additional vacancies in the village’s downtown area, he said, adding two additional parking lots will open this year for shoppers to utilize downtown. The village is also committed to working with existing tenants, including the Yorktown Shopping Center, which

storage; and the construction of the first green alley, constructed with a permeable asphalt surface to address drainage issues. The department also saw the completion of its new salt dome, providing 6,000 tons of storage for road salt. “The dome increases the village’s ability to respond to winter storms while minimizing the impact of salt storage on the environment,” Giagnorio said. The police department continued its community outreach, graduating the 23rd class from the Lombard Citizen’s Police Academy. Moving forward, the department will continue to transition from standard patrol vehicles to SUVs to allow greater patrolling during major storms, Giagnorio said. The fire department, now fully staffed at 21 personnel per shift, celebrated its centennial in 2013. “It was an incredible milestone for our community,” Giagnorio said. “We are grateful for the 100 years of professionalism and service from the Lombard firefighters and paramedics.” Village employees are also committed to growing its communication with residents in 2014. Along with a redesign of The Pride, the village’s bi-monthly newsletter, the town’s social media presence has doubled in the past year, and a new weekly E-News email was initiated in January to provide residents with news, events and reminders, Giagnorio said. The village has maintained a 100-percent transparency score from the Illinois Policy Institute, and will continue to meet that goal, he said. “As your village president, I am committed to Lombard – it’s economic prosperity, its strong government services and the high quality of life we all expect from the town we live in,” Giagnorio said.

LOMBARD – Gianorio’s Pizza and Pasta, 434 S. Main St. in Lombard, will hold a fundraiser from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to collect money for the Edwin F. Deicke Home, which is in jeopardy of closing its doors after 31 years in town. Gianorio’s will donate 10 percent of sales during the fundraiser when presented with a “Help Save the Deicke Home” flier. The private residential home, 1005 E. Division St., for adults with developmental disabilities recently

announced that it will close March 31 if it cannot secure enough funding to remain open. It costs about $20,000 a month to run the home, according to Bruce Thompson, director for the home. The goal is to raise $100,000 to allow the home roughly five months to work on a long-term financial plan. Roughly 70 percent of the total operating cost comes from donations and fundraising. Customers must present a flier to have 10 percent of their bill donated to the home.

Resident feedback wanted for comprehensive plan draft By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The Village of Lombard is looking for resident feedback on its 2014 Comprehensive Plan draft, which is slated for board approval later this spring. “Municipalities are required to put together a comprehensive plan that sets a vision for what the village would like to see the community look like moving forward,” said Bill Heniff, Lombard’s director of community development. The village’s community development department will host an open house for residents to view the draft from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday

at Lombard Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave. A previous open house was held Feb. 17, but due to the severe winter weather, the village added a second date. “We’re trying to solicit public comments so we can share that information with the plan

commission,” Heniff said, adding that the comprehensive plan is also on the village’s website, and staff also plan to send out inquires on social media outlets. The comprehensive plan will serve as the village’s primary long-range land use policy document, and includes goals and recommendations for future items related to land use, transportation, annex-

ation and economic development, Heniff said. The village’s previous comprehensive plan was from 1998. Municipalities generally update their comprehensive plan every 10 to 15 years, Heniff said. Staff began updating the former comprehensive plan in 2011, going topic by topic, Heniff said. With the document almost complete, the community can now add its input on the vision of the community. Lombard is considered in a “mature phase,” meaning that most areas of the village are developed. Moving forward, the focus will be on redevelopment and re-purposing proj-

ects to reflect changing interests of the community. “We will see even more development as the economy improves,” Heniff said. “Lombard is a destination for restaurants and retail, and we want to maintain and expand it where possible.” The plan includes demographic information, major developments – including the Highlands of Lombard, Fountain Square of Lombard and Yorktown Shopping Center – and visions. “These are value statements that we can use as guiding principles when we talk about capital investment and private investment in the community,” Heniff said.

Letter-writing contest puts students in mind of pioneer By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – An annual letter-writing contest sponsored by the Lombard Historical Society is an opportunity for fifth-grade students to put themselves in the shoes of local pioneer Sheldon Peck. The Sheldon Peck Letter Writing Contest, held each February for more than a decade, allows students to be creative and learn local history, said Brigitte O’Brien, membership chairwoman of the Lombard Historical Society. “We ask that they literally put themselves in Sheldon Peck’s shoes,” O’Brien said. Participating students are

asked to pretend they are Peck writing a letter to Abraham Lincoln. “Challenge yourself to step back in time to 1848 and pretend you live in Babcock’s Grove [now Lombard],” reads the contest entry. “What might you, as Sheldon Peck, write to Mr. Abraham Lincoln in a personal letter?” “What a delightful way

for fifth-graders to learn a bit more about local history by researching and learning what he did to help build the community,” said Pat Poskocil, founder of the contest and member of the Lombard Historical Commission and historical society. “The young people have so much fun doing this.” The local contest is sponsored by the historical society’s Sheldon Peck Homestead and is open to all students enrolled in fifth grade in any public or private school in Lombard. Letters must be handwritten, between one and two pages and from the perspective of Peck. “He was an abolitionist and an artist,” Poskocil said. “He

was very involved in helping Babcock’s Grove become the community it is today. Peck lived in the same era as Lincoln and they could have actually written to each other.” Peck was a famous American artist who lived in Lombard – then called Babcock’s Grove – from 1837 to 1868 and painted portraits before the camera was invented, according to information from the historical society. Over the years, students have found unique ways to write their letters and have discussed farming, art, local issues and the Underground Railroad. “Many talk about the feelings of owning people and what that meant in those

days,” Poskocil said, who judged the contest for about nine years. One year, a student’s letter appeared so authentic that a member of the media contacted the historical society thinking it was a real artifact, Poskocil said with a laugh. Many of the students who participate make a visit to the museum to get their background information. “It’s a perfect way to make history more relevant in their town,” O’Brien said. The letters are read by five judges and scored on a point scale. The contest is not a mandatory part of school curriculum, but some teachers incorporate it into their U.S. history lessons, O’Brien said.

Monkeys trained to be helping hands My friend, Angel, told me the other day, “I want a monkey.” I asked what he was talking about and he proceeded to tell me the story of Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers (monkeyhelpers. org), a nonprofit agency from Cambridge, Mass. Capuchin monkeys are trained from birth to perform small tasks to help people with spinal injuries or, like Angel, who suffer from muscular dystrophy. Angel’s disease has weakened him to a point where he has lost his ability to walk, struggles to sit up without help, and can barely lift his arms to COMMUNITY open a drawer. What he VOICE can do, once he makes it to Bruce his wheelchair, is type on a computer. Via computer, Flowers Angel is taking classes online to become a medical coder for insurance companies. He also has a small computer repair business where he installs software for customers and fixes monitors, keyboards and CPUs. What he has difficulty doing is turning pages, scratching itches, retrieving dropped objects, and repositioning his legs on a wheelchair. A pair of helping hands, even from a monkey, would be great benefit to Angel. After reading their website, I learned that the 6- to 8-pound monkeys attend Monkey College for about three to five years where they are trained in an increasing complexity of tasks. They first start in a cubicle with a trainer to learn how to be rewarded for accomplishing a task. The first reward is a ringing bell followed by a lick of peanut butter. At the end of “cubicle” training, the reward has become a verbal praise like “good boy/girl.” The next phase of training involves more complex tasks like opening bottles or turning on lights using a laser pointer to direct their action. The monkeys are also introduced to wheelchairs in this phase. The last training room is a homelike room called the “Apartment.” It contains real appliances, TV’s, and electronics that the monkeys learn to operate with instruction. It is a fascinating concept, and Angel has already sent his first application to be considered for a trial run with the monkey. My thought, however, is “who is going to take care of the monkey?” With one caretaker already helping Angel, will there be double-duty, literally, with taking care of the monkey also? I hope not, and his mother supports the idea of a helper monkey in the house.

Mike McNett, a Lombard resident and captain of the USA Ice Team, uses a palm rod to ice fish Feb. 10 at Westmore Woods in Lombard.

Good luck to Lombard resident Mike McNett, who is in Belarus right now for the 11th World Ice Fishing Championship. The team captain hopes to lead the U.S. to its first world title since 2010. Here’s hoping the fish are hungry. Residents of the Deicke Home in Lombard are in jeopardy of losing their home. The private, nonprofit residence for adults with developmental disabilities will close March 31 after 31 years if it is unable to secure additional funding.

Right now, the six-member Lemont Village Board and the mayor, Mr. Brian Reaves, are deciding on whether they (and only they) should obligate the Lemont taxpayers to be responsible for a sports complex that is estimated to cost $21 million, with finance costs of up to $18 million. They are doing so after they found a private source of funding, which allowed them to legally deny any binding input from the residents and voters of Lemont. This means that out of the more than 16,000 residents of Lemont, only seven people have a voice in approving a high-risk project ... Many of us in Lemont have complained about this maneuver and have been repeatedly told by the Lemont board and mayor, “You elected us, and that means that we can do what we want,” and, “If you don’t like what we’re doing, then vote us out next election.” This is not how a representative democracy is supposed to work and, besides, they can do a lot of damage in the next three years. Please help us get our right to vote on this project by publicizing our plight.

Some of the fastest cardiac treatment times in the nation? Amazing.

When every second counts, you can count on us.

During a heart attack, a delay in care means damage to your heart. Which is why Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is proud to provide some of the fastest arrival to treatment times in the country. Last year alone, our average door to treatment time was just 60 minutes. With a national average of over an hour and a half, that’s a difference that saves heart muscle and lives.

ELMHURST – In just a few months, a $1.4 million nursing simulation center will open for Elmhurst College students and hospital staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. “We’re modeling the future health care by creating this partnership,” said Julie Hoff, director of the Deicke Center for Nursing Education. Hoff explained that as modern health care demands more collaboration among doctors and nurses, working with the hospital exemplifies that cooperation. “I think that’s actually the most exciting part of all of this,” said Deborah Steberg, director of professional practice and education at Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare. Elmhurst Memorial hosted a reception Wednesday celebrating the start of construction. The 4,600-square-foot Elmhurst College Simulation Center at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital will feature simulation labs where nursing students can practice low-fidelity skills like wound care and giving injections. In addition, life-size, robotic-simulated patients will reside in the labs. The simulated patients can be programmed to display symptoms and conditions ranging from a fever to giving birth with complications. Steberg also mentioned how, more and more, nurses are working outside of the hospital setting. A home care lab will include a living room and residential bathroom where students can practice conducting a well-baby visit or adapting a home for someone with a disability. A control room hidden behind one-way mirrors will allow directors to reprogram and change a simulated patient’s condition without students knowing and create near-to-life situations. An observation room will allow students not participating in simulations to observe

from screens in the room as well as their cellphones and laptops. Equipment will also be installed in Elmhurst College classrooms to broadcast simulations to students on campus. Students and instructors can use the conference room as a classroom for debriefing following exercises. “That’s the beauty of it.” Hoff said. “It’s just a lot more space that is more usable [and] flexible.” Elmhurst College nursing students use simulators now, but they are limited by space, Hoff said. Students won’t have those same limitations at the center. “To be able to have new nurses working in a simulation lab is very beneficial,” Steberg said of recent nursing graduates working at the hospital. She also noted the night shift, which often has limited resources, will benefit from the simulation lab. “I’m most excited about our ability to work with the low-volume, high-paced [emergency situations],” Steberg said.

She explained that simulation allows staff to practice as a group for emergency situations in a near-to-life environment. While the hospital experiences emergencies, Steberg said not every nurse or physician run into them every day. Simulations also provide the chance to observe a group dynamic in a high-stress situation. Both students and staff will begin using the simulation center in the fall, but both Hoff and Steberg are excited about the two institutions working together. Steberg said the hospital can benefit from Elmhurst College research, and students can benefit from the hospital’s help when finding students placements in the area. “As leaders we’re leveraging each other’s resources,” Hoff said.

What: Contemporary work by local, national and international artists When: Through March 29 Where: Cleve Carney Art Gallery, McAninch Arts Center, College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn Carney put his education to good use, as the owner of the largest roofing company in Illinois and later the owner of a suburban bank, the sale of which allowed him to retire on his 50th birthday, Rick Carney said. His early retirement gave him more time for his many philanthropic pursuits. Over the years, Carney served on the boards of several organizations and was named “Philanthropist of the Year” by the West Suburban Philanthropic Network in 2006. McAninch Arts Center Marketing and Development Coordinator Roland Raffel remembers Carney coming to the center for as long as he’s worked there. Carney often would attend performances and visit exhibits at the previous art gallery. Filled to the brim with art, Cleve Carney’s Glen Ellyn house is more like a museum, Rick Carney said. “He’s got it in every square inch of the house,” he said. “There’s not much furniture. It’s all art.” Carney’s love for the arts never ceased, even as he grew ill. In 2006, he was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy, a brain disease that causes a loss of motor functions. During the next seven years, Carney continued to be in the community as much as he could. “Cleve was an incredible fighter,” Raffel said.

GLEN ELLYN – After years of supporting the arts at College of DuPage, late Glen Ellyn philanthropist Cleve Carney will remain there for years to come through the new Cleve Carney Art Gallery. Located in the recently renovated McAninch Arts Center, the construction of the gallery was funded through a $700,000 donation made by Carney before he died from a rare brain disorder in July 2013 at age 74. In addition to the monetary donation, the college also will receive part of Carney’s personal art collection. “We’re so fortunate to have this gift,” McAninch Arts Center Director Diana Martinez said. “Without Cleve Carney, there absolutely wouldn’t be this gallery and the art that’s filling it.” College officials will have first choice of Carney’s collection after it is finished being appraised, which is how Carney wanted things, his brother, Rick Carney, said. The appraisal process is expected to be completed this month, he said. College of DuPage will receive 40 percent of the value of the collection, which includes about 800 pieces, some of which are currently on display at the gallery as part of its inaugural exhibit. Once the artwork is chosen, Carney’s donation to the college is expected to exceed $1 million. Rick Carney attributes the love he and his brother had for the arts to their parents, who were actors. The two grew up in Wheaton, where their parents were involved in dance and drama clubs. Although Cleve Carney took a few art classes as a college student at Dartmouth, he received a bachelors degree in economics, and later, a masters degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.

Area legislators try to combat heroin epidemic By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A group of local House Republicans announced Thursday a new package of legislation aimed at curbing, treating and preventing the state’s heroin problem. The seven bills were announced in the DuPage County Judicial Office facility. House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said the news conference’s location was important. Last year, there were a record 46 fatal heroin overdoses in DuPage County and Durkin called the area “ground zero” in the fight against heroin. “There’s no more greater mission that we have in Springfield as state representatives [than] to try to save lives and protect families, particularly from this epidemic which has grown throughout the state of Illinois – and mainly in this DuPage County region,” he said. Combating the growing heroin problem in the county would take time, partnerships, education and rehabilitation, said Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst. The bills, which Reboletti said he hoped would be introduced separately to House committees in March, cover a wide range of issues. First, the plan would create a pilot program in DuPage County to create a secure treatment facility in what was once the county’s 40-bed youth home. It would serve as a last-chance program for low-level offenders on probation and young individuals who would otherwise go to prison, Reboletti said. He said the program could cut down the number of nonviolent offenders in the state correctional system and help prevent repeat offenders by treating the addiction. Reboletti said funding and administrating were still unclear but suggested at least part of the funding could come from taxes collected from medicinal marijuana. The 7 percent tax is dedicated to helping prevent crime and recidivism, a focus Reboletti called a “perfect fit.” Another bill would extend the RICO laws in the state, which allow for prosecutors to pursue civil claims against in-

7 proposed bills • Pilot program in DuPage County to establish a “last chance” secure substance abuse treatment facility • Extend RICO statutes to 2022 • Require county health departments to track and report the number of drug overdose deaths • Enhance penalties for patients getting controlled substance prescriptions from multiple doctors • Education initiative to spread awareness of Illinois “Good Samaritan” law • Creation of pamphlets to give to those who have opiate prescriptions • Increase penalties for using and selling the drug krokodil dividuals, businesses or groups whose actions are a part of a criminal organization. The laws were a “huge asset” and used in last year’s bust of 31 people involved in a heroin ring, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. The legislation asks lawmakers to extend the sunset date to 2022, five years past its current expiration date. The package also includes bills that require county health departments to track and report the number of drug overdose deaths to the state, enhance penalties for patients receiving controlled substances from multiple doctors, begin an education initiative to raise awareness on the state’s “Good Samaritan” law, commission pamphlets educating holders of opiate prescriptions about their dangers and increase the penalties for selling and using the drug krokodil, a heroin alternative, to be on par with those for heroin. Reboletti said that he believed that the legislation focused mainly on rehabilitation and education. “Instead of putting people into prison, we’re offering some alternatives here and recognizing that it’s an addiction, it’s not necessarily criminal activity,” he said. “And if we can beat the addiction portion, recidivism rates are going to go down … we’re going to save lives and we’re going to save taxpayer dollars.”

Berwyn’s Wishbone spreads Southern charm BERWYN – Several months before visiting Wishbone last week, I went to a market and bought everything I needed to make shrimp and grits. Unfortunately, after that grocery stop and each subsequent trip, I’ve managed to eat all the bacon before I actually get around to making the dish, and the shrimp are still waiting in the freezer. So when I saw the Southern favorite on the menu at Wishbone, I ordered it as an appetizer without hesitation. I’m happy I did; my craving now can rest easy. The creamy, cheesy grits supporting plump shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, white wine and scallions was a personal favorite when my companion and I ate at Wishbone’s pop-up location, connected to Olive or Twist Martini Bar in Berwyn. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, retaining some snap, and the bites of bacon stayed crispy – never an easy trick. The popular Chicago barbecue joint returned to Berwyn this winter on a trial run through March. If it catches on, people will have a new home base for fried chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, crab cakes, catfish, rainbow trout and other downhome belly-pleasers. The new spot sits in Berwyn’s charming Depot District, along with neighboring bars, restaurants, gift shops and a comedy club. During our visit, my companion and I sat at a table with a nice view through the large picture window. Out front, trains rolled by to create a fun atmosphere – they could be seen but not heard. And with exposed brick walls and ductwork, along with other trendy but warm interior design elements, the restaurant manages to conjure both a Southern and urban feel. Fitting the theme, blues and jazz soundtracked the friendly and attentive service. As soon as we were seated,

Glenbard East sends five to state By DAN SANTAROMITA

Glenbard East wrestlers at state

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com FRANKLIN PARK – Two years ago, Glenbard East had never qualified more than two wrestlers to state in the same year. In the past two seasons, the Rams have qualified a whopping 12 entries to state. Last year’s seven was nearly matched by this year’s five after the Rams competed at the Leyden sectional last weekend. All five qualifiers, Carlos Fuentez (106 pounds), Anfarnee Rodgers (120), Dayton Olson (126), Josh Martin (145) and D’Andre Johnson (285), are state returners that were part of the group that made it to Champaign a year ago. of them placed, and the group went 5-11 at state last year. They are hoping to make a bigger impression this time. “Get on that podium, come home with a medal,” Martin said. The ambition to place at state, or more, is unanimous among the East wrestlers. “I definitely expect to place and even get in the finals,” Fuentez said. “That’s definitely my goal.” Fuentez was second in the sectional after losing to Oak Park-River Forest’s Jason

Renteria for the second week in a row. Fuentez is ranked third in Class 3A by IllinoisMatmen.com. The senior said he is in better shape heading to the state tournament this year. “I weighed 103 at weighins at state last year,” Fuentez said. “I was really undersized last year. Now, I’m cutting. I weighed 108 on the dot when I was weighing in at sectionals. I’m definitely a lot bigger, and I grew skill wise this summer.” Martin, like Fuentez, lost his sectional championship

145 32-4 126 40-4 120 35-10

match but is happy with how he entered Thursday’s first round at state. “It’s definitely where I wanted to be,” Martin said. “Top two [in the sectional], getting a better place going into the state series instead of going in at fourth when you’re going to end up matching up with a guy who took first place [at a sectional]. It was definitely in my mind to place as high as I could.” The Rams did have a sectional champ in Johnson. He represents another great chance for a medal. He pinned Addison Trail’s Bobby Carson in the final. Last year, Johnson faced eventual state champion Brian Allen in the first round and lost to third-place finisher

Adarios Jones of Moline in the wrestlebacks. By winning the sectional, Johnson lowered the chances of getting stuck with a tough draw again. The shock of the day came when Jake Drew failed to qualify for state. Drew, a junior 132-pounder, had qualified for state his first two years of high school. He was on track to potentially become East’s first four-time state qualifier, but lost his semifinal match in overtime and then lost again in the wrestlebacks. Other than that, there were no surprises for East. The five other returners did what they expected: get back to state. “Last year, I was more surprised,” Olson said. “This year, I came into it knowing I was going to qualify. I just knew it.”

Local NASCAR team owner follows road to success By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Anthony Marlowe’s love of cars and racing was born on Archer Avenue, the famous street that cuts a swath through Chicago’s southside and the city’s southwest suburbs. “I’ve been a lifelong racing fan since back in the day running cars up and down Archer Avenue,” Marlowe said. “I’ve always had an affinity for it.” Now a successful businessman, Marlowe was able to turn his love into a reality as he became a minority owner with Swan Racing in January. Swan Racing, which is based in Statesville, N.C., has two cars that compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, No. 26 Cole Whitt and No. 30 Parker Kligerman. As the NASCAR season starts Sunday with the Daytona 500, Marlowe will be one of hundreds of thousands of people in attendance as he watches Whitt and Kligerman compete in the race, but for him, it will be all business, which coincidentally is how he became a NASCAR owner. After graduating from Lyons Township High School, Marlowe moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to go to college before he quickly realized it wasn’t for him. “I didn’t last very long,” he said. “I started working for a company called MCI, and they asked me to run their sales team in Arlington, Va. so I did that for a few years. How many 19-year olds get to be a manager and get that kind of experience.” MCI brought Marlowe back to Iowa City in 2001. Two years later, he co-founded TMone, a domestic business process outsourcing firm that has since spread to four locations, employs more than 1,000 people and has been named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing private companies seven years in a row. He became a NASCAR team sponsor in 2011 before selling TMone last year. He is still president of the company. His business success has allowed him to achieve the dream many sports fans harbor. “I always thought one day I’d like to be part of [owning a

Some sports owners interject themselves into every minute detail of the day-today operations of the team, but Marlowe didn’t get to be a successful businessman by

not knowing his own strengths and weaknesses. He knows enough to stand back and let each person involved in Swan Racing do their job. “This is my first foray into pro sports, aside from being a

sponsor. All my experience is as a CEO and entrepreneur in the business world,” Marlow said. “I don’t envision myself getting involved much in the competitive side of things right now. I’ll leave those deci-

sions to others. “Bray Pemberton [general manager] is a talented young leader. He has the keys and we rely on him. [Primary Owner and CEO] Brandon Davis has already got us in a good spot.”

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Glenbard East Junior | Wrestling Why Johnson was selected: Johnson won the Leyden sectional at 285 pounds to earn his second straight trip to the state tournament. Glenbard East junior wrestler D’Andre Johnson was one of five Rams to qualify for the state tournament from the Leyden sectional last weekend, but was the only one to win the sectional title. After pinning Addison Trail’s Bobby Carson in the final, Johnson leaped into coach Kevin Carlson’s arms in excitement. The 285-pound Johnson, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week for the second time, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita after winning the sectional title.

I almost didn’t make it

Everyone is usually happy just to qualify for state, but does it mean more to win the sectional? It puts me in a better place than it did last year. With me taking fourth last year and having to face the No. 1 kid in state [Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen], now I’m in a better spot to meet him later.

What is your goal at state? My goal is to win and I’m going to do anything to do it. I think I got a pretty good shot.

Leifheit also were major contributors that will be expected to come back next year. “This team is building for the future, and the future looks really good here at East,” Finnie said. “A lot of kids put a lot of effort into it. I got a lot of returning girls next year.” The Rams went from 0-12 in the DuPage Valley Conference to 5-7 and are hoping for more improvement next year. “We’re graduating two starters, but other than that I got a young ball club.” Finnie said. “A lot of sophomores this year on the team and a couple of juniors. I’m looking forward to next season.”

[to state] last year. Being in that match to get to the third place match and almost not winning but then winning, I jumped into his arms last year, too. It was so exciting to get this far and do something.

LOMBARD – Glenbard East’s girls basketball team was a young group this season, so an early playoff exit is no surprise, but the Rams showed a lot of progress this season and already have their coach excited for next year. The Rams finished an 8-17 season, a sharp improvement over last year’s 3-24, with a 57-32 playoff loss to Wheaton Warrenville South on Wednesday. The Tigers are the top seed in the sectional and showed why with a dominant performance. South led 22-3 early in the second quarter.

“They are a really, really good ball club,” East coach Don Finnie said. “We played hard. I thought the kids in the second half came out and played as well as they could against [that] team.” East got to the regional semifinal by defeating Schaumburg 56-45. Senior Elie Donovan scored double figures in both games with 21 against the Saxons and 11 against the Tigers. Donovan was one of two senior starters along with Taj Key. Sophomores Brasia Solid and Ashley Brown cracked the starting lineup in their first year on varsity while juniors Allison Hansen and Rachael
