LOMBARD – The Inaugural Food Wars Challenge for Charity at St. Pius X Parish School in Lombard raised more than $10,000 that will be donated to various charities, according to organizers of the event. The student-organized food competition, inspired by reality shows like Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” was held Jan. 31 and pitted 18 teams of students and recent graduates against each other in a race to raise the most money for their chosen charity. The winning team, “Bake Upon a Star,” raised $1,631 for their charity, Make-AWish-Foundation. In addition to their total, they received 50 percent of all other team proceeds, bringing their total donation to $5,802.50. The remaining 50 percent of team profits was donated to each team’s charity.

Lombard native authors series with Bears’ ‘Peanut’ Tillman By MATTHEW PIECHALAK
Know more
mpiechalak@shawmedia.com When Tony LiFonti and Chicago Bears veteran Charles “Peanut” Tillman began co-authoring a children’s book series, they knew they wanted to provide positive lessons for kids. “The books are about children who find themselves in everyday situations where they need a little bit of guidance,” said LiFonti, an English teacher at Glenbard North High School and a Glenbard East alumnus. “Through experiencing the negative aspects of a situation, they are able to grow.” Sixty percent of profits from the series will be donated to the Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation, which offers opportunities and resources to local children and their families in need. Tillman, a cornerback for Chicago since 2003, is widely known for his charitable contributions. On Saturday, Till-

orating with Tillman about two-and-a-half years ago after discussing the idea with him during an annual celebrity flag football game. The main character of each book is an adolescent bear, and the theme and settings tie closely to the time of year. The first book, “The Story of Snowy Bear and the
Lost Scarf,” was published in December and follows Snowy Bear as he searches in vain for his missing scarf. When the protagonist reacts poorly to the situation, it’s Snowy Bear’s parents who help him grow from the experience. “I think what makes this series different is the pa-
rental involvement with the bears as they work through problems,” LiFonti said. “There’s always a parent to help guide them.” The second volume of the five-book series, “Pirate Bear and the Treasure Hunt,” will be released March 1. To illustrate the books, LiFonti’s friend, Lincoln-Way Central art teacher Paul Faris, recommended Gabrielle Esposito, a former student he taught at Lincoln-Way East High School. Esposito, a 2013 graduate of the American Academy of Art, had the perfect style for what the authors were trying to accomplish, LiFonti said. The feedback LiFonti has received has been good, he said, adding that a majority of the promotional work has been done on social media and through Tillman’s appearances on sports radio. The praise extended to Germany, where a fourth-grade English teacher has been using the first book to teach her class.

Efforts underway to save Deicke Home By MATTHEW PIECHALAK
How to donate
mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – When Gina Damore was given news last week that the Deicke Home was in jeopardy of closing its doors after 31 years, she was devastated. “It was just heartbreaking,” said Damore, a Lombard resident and a volunteer at the home. “They’re a family, and it’s their home.” The Edwin F. Deicke Home, 1005 E. Division St. in Lombard, is a private, nonprofit residential home for adults with developmental disabilities. The home, which houses 16 residents, will close March 31 if it is unable to secure additional funding. “We have been a part of the Lombard community for so long, but it costs a lot of money for food, transportation and staff,” said Bruce Thompson, director for the home for the past nine years. Roughly 70 percent of the to-

Residents Kathleen (left) and Lisa wash, load and unload clothes Tuesday in the Edwin F. Deicke Home in Lombard. The home, which houses 16 adults, is in jeopardy of closing March 31 if additional funds cannot be secured. tal operating cost comes from donations and fundraising efforts, but those sources have been depleted in recent years. Five years ago, the home began to operate using reserve funds, Thompson said. “Those [funds] are down to
almost nothing now,” he said. The remainder of the funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provides a small subsidy, and from each resident’s Social Security benefits and the $375 a
month that guardians are allowed to provide, Thompson said. As residents went about their daily activities Tuesday morning, there were mutual feelings of uncertainty and sadness. For many of the residents, the place has been a stable home and a close-knit family. Marilyn, a resident of the Deicke Home for 25 years, said she was very upset when told that the home was in jeopardy of closing. “We don’t want this place to close,” she said. “I would be miserable if I wasn’t here.” Ed, a three-year resident, said he was shocked when he heard. “I love this place,” he said.
Tom and Collette Powers, the founding members of a school called the West Suburban Association, in 1982 decided to expand the school and build a residential home neighboring the schoolhouse for adults with developmental disabilities. Edwin and Lois Deicke, who lived near the school, donated $100,000 to the home. Since its inception in 1983, the Deicke Home has relied heavily on private donations. Many people have chosen to write the home into their wills and trusts, sometimes providing lump sum amounts that helped Deicke build its reserve fund and stay in the black each year, Thompson said. “We have been truly blessed over the years,” he said. But it takes roughly $20,000 a month to break even, and with reserves depleted, the Deicke Home is running short on options.

GOP’s plan improves health care for all Almost four years ago, the president’s healthcare reform plan began with worthy goals: Increasing access to quality care and lowering costs for all Americans. Now that the law’s new insurance marketplaces are open, it’s clear Obamacare not only fails to meet these goals, it creates an entirely new set of challenges. So far, millions of Americans have been kicked off of their health care plans and forced into more expensive federal or state exchanges. And after finding out they couldn’t in fact keep their healthcare plans as promised, millions will soon learn the doctor they’ve seen and known for years is out of their COMMUNITY network, despite another one VOICE of President Barack Obama’s Peter pledges that you could keep Roskam your doctor if you wanted to. We can do better than the president’s health care law, which has brought skyrocketing out of pocket costs and fewer options. President Obama consistently says, “if you’ve got good ideas, bring them to me, … [if] you still think this law is a bad idea, then you’ve got to tell us specifically what you’d do differently.” That’s exactly what House Republicans have done. For years, Republicans have been putting forward health care reforms centered on preserving the patient-doctor relationship and offering quality, lowcost health care through increased competition. Republican alternatives ensure that health care is more affordable, more available and more responsive to the American people’s needs without imposing a one-size-fits-all big-government approach. Access to high-quality, low-cost health insurance is attainable by opening health care markets across state lines, allowing Americans to purchase health care in a competitive, nationwide system. Republican health care reforms keep costs down by structuring markets in a way that makes sense. Allowing a greater number of individuals to join together in the marketplace gives them better access to more robust insurance options at a lower cost. By improving and expanding high-risk pools through Universal Access Programs, all Americans – regardless of pre-existing conditions or past illnesses – can have access to coverage. There also are plans that create pools for small businesses, letting them come together to increase their coverage of employees while leveraging the same bulk negotiating power that large businesses use to keep costs down. Obamacare’s massive system of costly burdensome rules doesn’t have to be our future – it’s time to repeal and replace this flawed law with real reforms that improve the health care system for all Americans.

I am sounding off about the bad job Berwyn has done along Ogden Avenue with snow removal. If you come down here Affordable Care Act as a pedestrian there is no place is broken to walk. I am very pleased with the effort that the village of Brookfield has put forth in keeping our roads plowed. The one problem that hinders their effort is parked cars. Yes, the rotating parking is a great idea if people follow the rules. The trouble is, too many people do not move their cars. What is needed is for the police department to go on a ticket blitz and start issuing tickets to those that do not move their cars. Many people go through great effort to move their cars, especially if they have to enter through the alley. And then someone will park their car in front of that home, and the homeowner does not get plowed. While issuing snow tickets they also could ticket the cars that still do not have village vehicle stickers. This is a complaint not only for our neighborhood but from others in Brookfield.

I enjoy watching the televised Village Board meetings of the Village of La Grange Park. However, there’ve been problems with the microphones on many occasions. It’s finally been rectified last year. But … Jan. 28’s meeting had long gaps where the mics did not work. This is unacceptable. I watch La Grange Village Board meetings every Saturday morning, and they’ve never had a microphone problem. It’s time to really get to the root of it, please.

Employment security office to become call center By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The Lombard office of the Illinois Department of Employment Security is slated to become a full-time call center later this year, one of several moves being made by the department Know more to consolidate serFor more informav i c e s a s tion, visit www.ides. the econ- illinois.gov. omy continues to rebound. The unemployment/job center office, located at 837 S. Westmore Ave. in Lombard will move its employment services to its Lisle office, while unemployment services will only be offered online or by placing a phone call, spokesman Greg Rivara said. As job creation has picked up during the past three years, federal funding has declined, Rivara said. “As funding goes down, we need to cut costs,” he said. “Part of that is delivering employment services face-to-face and unemployment services via telephone and the Internet.” While in-person service is needed for employment-related needs where individual location, work history and skillsets are unique, the process for all unemployment claims is the same, Rivara said. The department has offered the option of filing Internet claims for unemployment services since 2006, and in the past year, paper claims declined from 50 percent to 10 percent as it makes a concerted effort to further steer people to its website. “We want you to use the Internet,” Rivara said. The Lombard office currently offers both services, along with a data analysis department. The office also has an existing call center. By

Created by Thompson’s daughter, Kristin, the goal is to raise $100,000, which would allow the home to remain open for several months as the board of directors works to create a long-term financial plan, Thompson said. As of Tuesday afternoon,
the site had raised $5,530. “That [goal] would give us some breathing room to be able to come up with something for beyond that,” he said. “It’s a hard position for everyone to be in. raised $300 that the Key Club will donate to Feed My Starving Children for the relief efforts related to Typhoon Haiyan in The Philippines. Game Changer formed in late 2012 after Collis and Lundgren, previously in another band, began playing with Payne. Eventually Newling joined as the band’s new drummer, and they began to write songs and play shows. Aparici has since joined as a semi-permanent guitarist. (The band has playfully hinted to him that he should join full time.) The band name is credited to an inside joke that was coined accidentally and stuck. “It works,” Payne said with a laugh. “It was the only name we all agreed on.” Their first show was at the 2013 Taste of Lombard, and since then, they’ve played numerous shows around the Chicago area, as well as at Northern Illinois University. “I don’t think we’ve played the same place twice,” Payne said. The band is confident that

despite being together for only a year, they are close to establishing a cohesive identity with their songs. “We’re honing in on it,” Payne said, adding that a majority of the songwriting is done separately, but that they’re focused on starting to write more together. The band is focusing its efforts on recording an EP that they hope to have out later this year. Despite the recent popularity of electronic music, the band members say there’s something more organic about playing rock music. “We have been playing our instruments for a long time,” Lundgren said. “It’s what’s natural to us. You can have a lot more passion playing an instrument than making a beat.”

Made in Italy conjures flavorful getaway GLEN ELLYN – As usual this winter, it was snowing as we neared downtown Glen Ellyn and our destination, a 9-month-old trattoria called Made in Italy. But then the magic happened. We stepped through the foyer under the watchful eye of Sophia Loren peeking at us from a balcony hung with a simulated washline of silken lingerie, and the glow of a very real fireplace beckoning from a few feet beyond. It felt like we’d stumbled in from an Italian lane and found refuge. Vocalists like Andrea Bocelli provided the escapist musical backdrop. We couldn’t resist the offer of a table looking over the fireplace, the bottles on its mantle sending not so subliminal suggestions of uncorking a sparkling Prosecco. Chianti won out, and soon accompanied crusty bread perfect for dipping in olive oil from a cruet containing garlic cloves and red pepper for a burst of flavor. Sprinkle on the Parmesan, and it’s a tasty prelude to the meal. Murals and other art set a romantic stage in the intimate dining room with its 12 tables along two walls of windows looking across to the train depot. For an appetizer, we decided to share the stuffed eggplant. Slicing into the two big servings revealed sushi-style precision to a roll-up of rich filling inside tender eggplant smothered in sauce and cheese. Entrees come with soup or salad, and we each ordered one so we could try both. We split a nice dinner salad, and especially appreciated the homemade minestrone brimming with chunks of carrot, potato and zucchini that hit the spot on a cold night. My date opted for one of the evening’s specials, the Rigatoni Toscana, featuring an excellent homemade pasta paired with hearty slices of Italian sausage and portobello mushrooms in an Asiago-infused sauce. “It was a very tasty and

The wait staff was friendly, and we noticed our server setting up a lovely family photo for a neighboring group of diners – a sentimental coda to their evening. The generous food portions
meant we were having leftovers wrapped to take home, and hadn’t planned well enough to try the tiramisu or gelato, the featured desserts. Dessert is an excuse to return, although Sophia’s smile alone might suffice. And with The Glen Art Theatre right around the corner, the prospect of Italian cuisine and

Freshman phenom By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The wins haven’t been as frequent as Glenbard East’s boys basketball team would have liked, so the focus has shifted to developing younger players like Mike Finley. Finley, a freshman guard, looked like he belonged at the varsity level from his first game thanks to his sturdy 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. However, there was always going to be a learning curve, one Finley thinks he is adjusting to. “It was kind of hard at first, but now I’m getting the hang of it,” he said. Finley scored a team-high 15 points in the Rams’ 59-37 loss to Naperville Central on Tuesday. It was East’s fourth straight loss, and the team fell to 4-17 overall and 0-9 in the DuPage Valley Conference. The Rams led 17-12 before Central turned it on to close out the second quarter. The Redhawks took a 40-23 lead into halftime, and the Rams were unable to come back in the second half. “I thought we played hard,” East coach Scott Miller said. “That was one of our goals going into this one: play hard for 32 minutes. We did that. I thought we came out strong in the first quarter and then they turned the pressure up in the second quarter. We didn’t make some good decisions, and I thought their energy level in the second quarter was really the difference.”

Upcoming games • Glenbard East at Glenbard North, 7:30 tonight • Wheaton North at Glenbard East, Feb. 14 • Glenbard East at Naperville North, Feb. 21
Despite the disappointing finish, Finley’s play was a bright spot. “That was probably the best game he’s had at the varsity level, so I was real pleased to see that,” Miller said. While Finley still has plenty to work on in his game, it’s amazing to think this is just his fourth year of organized basketball. He joined the Glenbard East Junior Rams program in sixth grade and started playing with East’s varsity team during practices and scrimmages last summer. He was the first freshman to start the season on the varsity team in Miller’s tenure. Finley said adjusting to the size and speed of the varsity game was the toughest part. He has worked on being more aggressive in recent games, with positive results. “I think I’ve played kind of good, and I’m trying to keep improving to make my team better,” Finley said. “I’m trying to get more rebounds. “I’m just trying to get the wins.” The Rams’ next chance for a win will be tonight at Glenbard North, which is tied with Naperville Central for second place in the DVC.

Class: 3A Regional: Glenbard East Sectional: Leyden Outlook: The Warriors don’t have as much top heavy talent as last year when Dan Draski and Dan Rowland both made state finals. After several injuries hurt the team in the regular season, they went just 1-5 in West Suburban Gold duals. However, Willowbrook still has some talented wrestlers capable of big postseason runs. Senior Jake Kroeger (182 pounds) missed some time earlier in the season, but qualified for state as a sophomore. Matt Rowland (152) is the younger brother of Dan and is proving to be one of the top sophomores in the area. Christian Chavez (220) also had a good season, but is in a loaded weight class at the regional. “You will have to have much better than a good day just to keep going,” Willowbrook coach Brian Wilson said. “I’m talking from regional up. State favorite Oak Park-River Forest, Addison Trail, Glenbard East and Wheaton North all have very strong teams and will take up many of the three sectional qualifying spots at many of the weight classes. Noah Fleckenstein is York’s best chance at a regional champion, but OPRF’s Andre Lee is a top wrestler at 195 pounds as well. Michael Ordonez (132 pounds), Jordan Santiago (160), Joe Helton (220) and T.J. Helton (285) also have a good chance to advance to the sectional. Once there, coach Terry Clarke thinks their might be easier sailing. “Our regional is loaded,” Clarke said. “If we can get all our good kids out of our regional, they have a chance to get to state. The deal is they have to get out of the regional.”

Was it a goal of yours to pin all of your opponents? It definitely is a goal because last year I set the [Glenbard East] record for pins in a season. Last year, I set the record for pins in a season with 24. Now I’m up to 27.
What postseason goals do you have? Podium, definitely. I want to be at least top five and I will do anything it takes to get there.
What was your experience at state last year like? Last year, I was scared. It was a lot to take in. Going down this year, I don’t plan on being as nervous because I’ve been through it.

Arkush says defense still wins titles The NFL season is indeed a marathon rather than a sprint, but with the Seahawks’ 43-8 rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII now in the books, another grueling season and race are over. What did we learn, and where do we go from here? It seems to me the most emphatic lesson to take from 2013 is that, as entertaining and exciting as wide open offenses and NFL passing attacks can be, defense and ground games still win championships. Can there be any doubt after Denver’s pathetic performance on the game’s biggest stage, and how thoroughly they dominated the Patriots in the AFC title game, that the three best teams in the NFL this year were Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina? Could it be mere coincidence that those three clubs all finished in the bottom tier of NFL passing offenses, but were the three best defenses in the league and owned among the league’s best running games?
contend in the NFL with a big-time offense and an “adequate” defense. I believe the Seahawks and Broncos Hub Arkush just proved that is not the case. Another hot-button topic to come out of this Super Bowl is the question of whether or not the “cold weather” Is it also just a fluke that each of those Super Bowl worked and can work clubs possess one of the NFL’s brightest again in the future. As lucky as the NFL owners got young quarterbacks, but that none of with the weather last week in New Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick or York and New Jersey, and as incrediCam Newton has done anything to sugbly lucky as they were on gameday, my gest they will be among the league’s top sense from Roger Goodell and the othpassers but all three can beat you with er powers that be is they know exactly their legs at almost any time? how lucky they got and they will be in To be clear, I suspect teams quarterbacked by Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, no great hurry to try it again. While it absolutely escapes me why the NFL owners are so determined to put a team back in L.A. when two have already failed and left, and the TV ratings in the market improve markedly when there is no club there, they are. It was reported Jan. 29, the St. Louis Rams owner and billionaire real estate developer Stan Kroenke recently purchased 60 acres of land in the L.A. market, and it is no secret he continues to be frustrated by the refusal of the folks in St. Louis to update the stadium there or build a new one. It could just be that Kroenke found a deal on land he couldn’t pass up. Or it could be that he will petition the league this spring to allow him to finally build a stadium in L.A. and move the Rams back to L.A. Kroenke’s not saying, but it’s a story we’ll watch closely.

were on stage with Goodell to present the award. Tillman’s signature accomplishment off the field is the founding – along with his wife, Jacqueline – of the Cornerstone Foundation. Their goal is to support the families of children suffering from serious and sometimes fatal illnesses, as their daughter Tiana did, requiring a heart transplant at the age of 3 ½ months. The Tillmans raised more than $1 million and supported more than 300 families in the Chicago area. The NFL presented Tillman’s other accomplishments in the following statement: “Tillman and his wife, Jackie, also contribute their time and resources to local, national and international organizations outside of the Cornerstone Foundation. The Tillmans have helped build a school in Cambodia, sponsored children through the Urban Promise program in Camden, New Jersey, and have purchased and donated over 700 tickets to Bears home games since
2008 through the Bears Home Team Hand-Off program. Tillman is also an avid supporter of our military, and has participated in a USO tour to Iraq, volunteered with the USO of Illinois on Thanksgiving to serve meals to local troops and provided soldiers with tickets to games at Soldier Field during the 2013 season.” While the award was certainly the high point of Tillman’s career, it is unclear what the Bears interest is in resigning Tillman to continue to play cornerback in Chicago. Tillman recently offered a promise to Bears fans that he will eventually retire as a Chicago Bear but also made it clear he is not ready to retire yet. He indicated he is on very good terms with Phil Emery and Marc Trestman, but he really has no idea yet what their level of interest is in his returning. Wherever “Peanut” lands in 2014, this honor and evening were a tremendous moment for Tillman and Chicago Bears fans.

NEW YORK – While it remains unclear whether or not Charles “Peanut” Tillman, who is an unrestricted free agent, will return to the Chicago Bears in 2014, there is no question he will be forever linked with Bears all-time great Walter Payton. Tillman was named the 2013 winner of the Walter Payton NFL Man Of The Year Award Saturday night on the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII at a special awards ceremony in New York. The award has been given annually to an NFL player who excels both on the field and off the field with his volunteerism and philanthropy. Payton won the award in 1977 when it was the NFL Man Of The Year Award. It was then renamed in his honor after his passing in 1999. Tillman was selected over fellow finalists Thomas Davis of the Carolina Panthers and Arizona’s Jay Feely. Each season the 32 NFL teams
choose one nominee to represent their club and the three finalists and eventual winner from the 32 nominees are selected by a panel of judges, which includes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Payton’s widow Connie Payton, the previous year’s winner who this year was Matt Birk and a number of other retired players. Each of the 32 nominees receives a donation of $1,000 in their names to the charity of their choice, and the winner gets an additional donation of $25,000. In accepting the award, Tillman said “I’m grateful to be the recipient of such a prestigious award. Walter Payton’s legacy continues to be a beacon of service and giving, and I’m just trying to do my small part. I don’t think any of the finalists do what they do to get recognition, but we do it because we are passionate about helping others.” The award has been given since 1970. Tillman joins Payton, Dave Duerson, Mike Singletary and Jim Flanigan as the only Bears to win it. Walter’s children Brittney and Jarrett

Shoveling snow Your gym is packed. Don’t wait in line for a machine; get a workout in your driveway and pick up a shovel. It’s more economical than a snow blower, and shoveling is an intense cardio workout that exercises muscles in your legs, core, back, shoulders and arms. Burn up calories: The exact amount depends on pace and intensity, but expect to burn around 250 calories for every 30 minutes of shoveling. If you experience lower temperatures, heavy snowfall, or the need to chop ice, you’ll burn even more calories as your body fights to stay warm and increases exertion. (Be safe, of course, and don’t shovel snow if you have a medical condition or you don’t normally exercise.) Work diferent muscle groups: Shoveling snow is a high-intensity workout – especially if you shovel fast – and it works all of your major muscle groups. You will feel it the next day in your legs, core, back, shoulders and arms. Use a full range of motion and fire your core muscles as you bend and lift. Use proper technique: Make sure to squat and lift the snow with your legs, not your back. Second, avoid bending over at the hip flexors. Lastly, keep the shovel close to your body and walk to where you will dump the snow instead of over-extending, twisting or leaning to toss it. Dress right: Being too cold can be dangerous and will tighten up your muscles. Dress in winter layers, wear good boots with traction and cover up your hands, ears and head.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, but a lifetime of good vision for our most precious sense demands year-round attention because every stage of life poses different challenges. Let’s look at each stage.
Infants and children Vision in early life is continually developing, so eye care is critical to identify and treat such issues as strabismus (both eyes not focusing on the same point) and amblyopia (“lazy eye,” where one is weaker than the other). Although less common, children may also suffer from glaucoma, cataracts and rare eye diseases. Children are also susceptible to eye injuries from seemingly harmless toys, but proper vigilance by parents can avoid most injuries. Regular screening at this stage is the key to prompt diagnosis and treatment and crucial to ensure normal visual function throughout life.
A scene as it might be viewed by a person with glaucoma.
Teenagers Young adults are at risk for sports-related injuries, with most occurring in basketball, baseball and racquet sports, and workplace injuries, which can happen at any age. Protective eye equipment can prevent 90 percent of these injuries, but a recent survey by the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that such equipment is worn only 35 percent of the time during high-risk activities.
A scene as it might be viewed by a person with cataract.
Adults Adults 40 to 60 years are guaranteed to develop presbyopia (or “short-arm syndrome”), a progressive loss of ability to see objects up close, resulting in a tendency to hold material further away. Reading glasses that magnify, used when the arm isn’t long enough, don’t work for everyone, so prescription glasses may be required. An exam every two years can determine the need for prescription glasses, as well screen for eye diseases. Conditions beginning in one’s 40s or 50s — notably diabetes — can affect eye health later. Diabetes, which affects 26 million people in the U.S., is the most common disorder leading to vision loss in those under 65.
Seniors The majority of patients I examine as an ophthalmologist are in their 70s and beyond, and their biggest complaints are blurred vision, dificulty driving at night or poor vision despite several recent changes in glasses. My examinations often reveal the presence of one of three eye diseases. Cataracts, a clouding of the

eye’s lens responsible for focusing, are an inescapable part of aging that can dramatically impair vision. Medications and many diseases can also lead to cataracts — and at any age. An examination by a medical eye doctor is necessary to determine the cause and how to treat it. If glasses no longer help, surgery can restore function. Age-related macular degeneration, progressive loss of central
vision, is the most common cause of blindness in the U.S. for individuals over 65. The complaints are often indistinguishable from those of cataracts. Numerous studies have established a genetic link to this condition, so people with a family history of AMD should undergo routine examinations beginning in their 50s. The risk for glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve, increases with age. Like
AMD, genetics play a role, and those with a family history of glaucoma should have regular eye examinations, again beginning in their 50s. There are no symptoms for this condition; it is nearly always diagnosed during a screening examination. Jeffrey Gallo, M.D., is president of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
