LOMBARD – For Lauren Iwinski, the path to winning her first spelling bee was one word and six syllables – encyclopedia. Iwinski, a fourth-grader at Park View Elementary School in Lombard correctly spelled the word to win the Kiwanis Club of Lombard’s Second Annual Spelling Bee on Feb. 22 at Glenn Westlake Middle School. To Iwinski, there was a certain amount of irony attached to the winning word. Previously, Iwinski’s older brother, Cal, had teased his sister, saying that she couldn’t even spell “encyclopedia.” “It’s funny that they asked me that word,” Iwinski said with a smile. “I spelled it right and he said, ‘OK, you are smart.’ ” It was the first-ever spelling bee competition for Iwinski, who watched Cal when he participated in the Lombard Elementary District 44’s spelling bee a few years ago. “I had been waiting until I was in fourth grade to be in the spelling bee,” Iwinski said, adding that she used to help her brother practice for the competition. The Kiwanis Club of Lom-
thought it was “paced.” Iwinski took second place in the fourth-grade competition behind Madison fourth-grader Colin Murphy. She then returned to studying words, although, there was no official list given to contestants. “She worked on studying words in the corner of the library until the final took place,” O’Brien said. “No list was given because we wanted to make it fair across the board so they are truly tested.” Competitors were whittled down to the final two, and once a word was spelled incorrectly, Iwinski had to spell that word correctly, as well as an additional word. For the win, Iwinski was awarded a trophy and $125 total – $100 for the win and $25 for second place in the fourth grade competition. “I was really happy and surprised,” Iwinski said. “I didn’t even realize I won until like five seconds later.” Iwinski, an avid reader who is currently tackling “The Hunger Games” triology, said she plans on entering more spelling bees in the future. As for the thrill of beating students up to three years older than her? “It was awesome,” she said with a grin.

D-87 officials, parent group seek support for referendum By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Voters headed to the polls this month in Glenbard Township High School District 87 will be asked to support the issuance of $35 million in bonds to fund facility projects at the district’s four schools. If approved, the $35 million would extend the district’s bond debt– currently due to expire in Fiscal Year 2026– through Fiscal Year 2039, according to a report prepared by PMA Securities, the district’s financial adviser. Residents’ tax rates would not increase as a result of the bond issuance, said District 87 Superintendent David Larson. “What we are asking is to add additional bonds on without any increase to the property tax [rate],” Larson said. “It’s really about investing in our number one asset, which is our students.” The referendum question will appear on the March 18 election ballot. Glenbard 4 Kids, a parent-led ballot initiative group formed in December 2013, has

been busy rallying referendum support in the communities that make up the four high schools. “It is needed for infrastructure repairs we believe have to be made to the four Glenbard schools,” Glenbard 4 Kids spokesman Steve Garwood said. “From a safety, security and educational standpoint, this is for the benefit of the kids,” Garwood said. “Some of the repairs needed would replace mechanical structures that are [about] 50-years-old.” The $35 million is expected

to be used to fund $8 million of projects in summer 2016, $18 million in summer 2017 and $9 million in summer 2018, according to the PMA report. The district’s Board of Education voted unanimously in November 2013 to place the
measure on the ballot. Along with Glenbard 4 Kids, the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn has endorsed the district’s referendum. However, Taxpayers United of America President and Founder Jim Tobin disagrees with the referendum – and any other ballot initiatives by public school districts seeking to raise taxes. Instead, the Chicago-based taxpayer group pushes for tax cuts at the local, state and federal level, Tobin said. “One of the best places to start cutting is to defeat all the property tax increases that are put on the ballot,” said Tobin, adding that there are five other referendums his organization is targeting on the March 18 ballot. The group has been distributing fliers calling for District 87 taxpayers to vote “no” on the referendum. “This is nothing more than a money grab by greedy government bureaucrats who will tax everything they can to prop up their own salaries and pensions,” the literature states. If the referendum is successful, the bonds will support the district’s Master Facility Plan, which includes $100 million of work to be executed during the course of 10 years, a majority of which will include infrastructure improvements
and renovations of classrooms, common areas and outdoor spaces. The district will fund the remaining $65 million of its Master Facility Plan through its Operations and Maintenance budget, which is about $6.5 million per year. The board previously approved issuing bonds to borrow $20 million that will be paid off using that budget. “It is a significant sharing between taxpayers and the District 87 board,” Garwood said. The Master Facility Plan, reviewed and approved by the Board of Education in December 2011, was developed by Legat Architects of Chicago with input from the district and community members, who participated in several months of focus groups. A steering committee, comprised of board members, staff, faculty, administrators, students, parents and community members, was also formed to gather feedback. Legat Architects originally identified $179 million worth of work to be completed during the plan’s 10-year cycle. However, the district scaled the plan back to $100 million after determining that the remaining $79 million of work will be addressed in the following 10 years.

Park View named Blue Ribbon School nominee LOMBARD – Park View Elementary School is in elite company after being named one of just 16 Illinois schools nominated by the Illinois State Board of Education as a Blue Ribbon School. “We are really excited,” said Park View Principal Roberta Wallerstedt, who was informed of the nomination in mid-January. “I think every school works very hard, so when you get something like this, it’s nice to know someone has been looking at what you are doing.” The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement, according to the ISBE website. During the nomination pro-
cess, ISBE looks at longevity in overall achievement, growth and demographics, Wallerstedt said. “As they look at all the schools in the state, they look at who bubbles up to the top,” she said. Wallerstedt now is working on the application for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, to be submitted to the United States Department of Education by March 21. The application includes biographical and program information on the school and data, including next week’s ISAT Test results. The national Blue Ribbon program has recognized about 7,500 schools in the past three decades. Winning schools are announced in September. “It was an honor to have somebody pull us out of all the schools in Illinois,” Wallerstedt said. “We are thrilled and will continue to do our very best.”

Pihos, Breen discuss Sandra Pihos Position: Republican incumbent Age: 67 Town: Glen Ellyn Employment: Full-time legislator, state representative, 48th District Primary election date: March 18 Why are you seeking re-election? Pihos: Illinois government is not working and must get leaner. I support term limits, independent redistricting and rolling back the temporary tax increase. I will continue to give strong constituent services, only vote for a balanced budget and spur job creation. What do you count as your biggest accomplishment in Springfield? Pihos: I am an advocate for providing quality education and have an inside perspective on the problems and solutions.
I have focused on stopping unfunded mandates that burden our schools. I know school districts are under immense pressure to achieve academic excellence; even more daunting, taxpayers know what is at stake and want positive results as education costs escalate. What is the biggest challenge facing Springfield and what would you do to address it?
Pihos: Illinois has a serious spending problem. Our state’s long term fiscal stability will be linked to budgeting for better results and operating more efficiently. As a member of the Legislative Audit Commission, I have filed legislation that will link the findings of inefficiencies of agencies directly to their appropriation in the future.
How would you improve the business climate in Illinois? Pihos: High taxes, over regulation and instability of our finances are barriers for growing business. As a former small business owner, I know it is critical to roll back taxes and regulations on business. Illinois should focus on job creation, not job retention.
Do you support the recent state pension bill and why? Pihos: I have sponsored and supported numerous pension reform bills in the past. Unfortunately, state lawmakers and the public were not given the legislation until two days before vote, making it difficult to vet the bill. As financial experts begin to see if the dollars add up, they are finding shortfalls. Lawsuits are also being filed to test the constitutionality of the bill. If the bill is tossed out or put on hold by the courts, we will be further in debt. I do not think this bill got the job done.
Why should voters vote for you? Pihos: I am hard working and accountable to my constituents. I am a vocal opponent to the Quinn-Madigan 67 percent tax increase, which should be rolled back as promised. I have sponsored and passed legislation to lower property taxes. I am a strong advocate of small businesses and job creation. I believe we should strengthen our education system and provide our residents with safe communities in which to live.

a citizen legislature and term limits.
Position: Republican Age: 37 Town: Lombard Employment: Vice president and senior counsel, Thomas More Society Primary election date: March 18
Why are you seeking this office? Breen: Our state is on the brink of economic disaster. The people of this district and of this state have put up with incompetent government at nearly all levels for long enough. They can deal with the truth and are willing to work with sincere legislators to turn things around.
Why do you think you are suited for this office? Breen: I have a strong understanding of the issues facing Illinois and a proven record of reducing spending and returning savings to taxpayers. In Lombard, we eliminated our vehicle sticker, froze property taxes and were rated the only 100 percent financially transparent municipality in DuPage County. I have the time, energy and understanding of the issues to be a citizen legislator who truly acts in the best interests of the taxpayers of the district.
What experiences do you have that lend themselves to serving this position? Breen: I’m a village trustee in Lombard, and when our longtime mayor passed away, I was chosen to serve as acting village president. I’ve served in executive positions in the private sector, including strong experience in nonprofit agencies, two of which I founded. I believe strongly in
What is the biggest challenge facing Springfield and what would you do to address it? Breen: We must reform Medicaid and make sure that the folks not entitled to Medicaid – by some reports, up to 40 percent of participants – stop crowding out those who are truly needy. Do you support the recent state pension reform bill and why? Breen: This bill saves at least $145 billion for taxpayers, and I support it. The bill is
step one, and Republicans need to lead the way toward a permanent, sustainable solution in the years to come. How would you improve the business climate in Illinois? Breen: We have way too many onerous regulations on business that kill jobs. We need to continue to repeal and modify those regulations, including reforming worker’s compensation. If the business community sees a change in mindset in Illinois, they will take a chance on the positives catching up to the negatives. Why should voters vote for you? Breen: Because it’s time for a change of philosophy and time for an energetic thinker who’s willing to lead this effort. You can’t expect the legislators who got us into this mess in order to get us out of it. It’s time for new leadership. That’s what I’m offering.

LOMBARD – The Deicke Home in Lombard will remain open through July, a representative from the home confirmed Wednesday morning. A steady stream of monetary support from the community during the past five weeks has bought the home an extra four months to establish a long-term financial plan. The Edwin F. Deicke Home, 1005 E. Division St., a private, nonprofit residential home for adults with developmental disabilities, announced in early February that it was in jeopardy of closing March 31 if unable to secure additional funding. The home currently houses 16 residents. A “Save the Edwin F. Deicke Home” page was set up on GoFundMe.com, a public crowdfunding website. The site has raised more than $20,700 of its proposed $100,000 goal as of Wednesday. “The goal would give us some breathing room to be able to come up with something for beyond that,” Bruce Thompson, director of the Diecke Home, said in early February. Additionally, local fundraisers have contributed to the cause. Gianorio’s Pizza & Pasta, 434 S. Main St. Lombard, held a two-day fundraiser last week, which raised about $1,000. Patrons who presented a Save the Deicke Home flier had 10 percent of their bill donated to the home.

St. Pius X Parish School, 601 S. Westmore Ave., held a “Out of Uniform” Day last week, which resulted in $1,613 that the school will donate to the home. Other local organizations also have expressed interest in donating, and a Save the Deicke Home Dance will be conducted Saturday at the Villa Park VFW Post 2801. Since its inception in 1983, the Deicke Home has relied heavily on private donations. Roughly 70 percent of the Deicke Home’s total operating cost comes from donations and fundraising efforts, but those sources have been depleted in recent years. Five years ago, the home began to operate using reserve funds, Thompson said. It takes roughly $20,000 a month to break even, Thompson said.

OPINIONS n LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: Do you support raising the minimum wage?
47 PERCENT: Yes 40 PERCENT: No 10 PERCENT: I have mixed feelings 3 PERCENT: No opinion
Time to move forward with Keystone XL In his fifth State of the Union Address, President Obama pledged that 2014 will be a “year of action.” Through “pen and phone,” he vowed to sidestep Congress and advance policies to create jobs for Americans struggling to find work in a tough economy. But after 5 1/2 years, the Keystone XL pipeline – which would create thousands of American jobs and boost our weak economy – is still gathering dust on the president’s desk. All this time, President Obama has delayed the construction of the pipeline by claiming it would accelerate climate change. Recently, the president’s own State Department rejected that argument when they VIEWS released their final EnvironPeter mental Impact Statement, concluding that building the Roskam Keystone pipeline will have no significant effect on the climate. The comprehensive 11-volume report went further to say that if the pipeline isn’t built, oil will be transferred by much more environmentally risky means – train, tanker or rail – resulting in up to 41.8 percent more greenhouse gas emissions. The State Department’s report confirms that Keystone would create tens of thousands of jobs and move America closer to energy independence, making Keystone a win-win policy. An overwhelming percentage of Americans are in favor of building the pipeline, and support for the project is strong among the governors whose states the pipeline will go through. Right here in Illinois, manufacturers are strongly encouraging the approval of the pipeline. Steve Romanelli, owner of Core Pipe in Carol Stream supports the construction of Keystone not just because of the obvious benefits of having a more secure and reliable source of energy, but because of the role energy plays in our manufacturing workforce. Steve and many others believe that with approval of Keystone, the U.S. could see a manufacturing resurgence, because as Steve puts it, “the lifeblood of manufacturers is energy.” Shockingly, the president is still using every possible stall tactic to delay the pipeline’s approval. Fears are growing that he will even use a Nebraska court case over the pipeline’s route as his next excuse. It is clear that when President Obama said he will lead this “year of action” he just plans to continue with more of the same. The president must not delay another day on approving the Keystone XL pipeline that will create good-paying jobs at home and unleash our energy potential.
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, represents Illinois’ 6th District, which includes much of DuPage County.

8ENDORSEMENT
Republican governor primary: Bruce Rauner Illinois has big problems. Years of fiscal mismanagement and incompetent leadership have compromised the state’s economic future. Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by more than $100 billion. The state ended 2013 with more than $7 billion in unpaid bills. Illinois’ credit rating has been downgraded five times since 2011, meaning taxpayers must pay much more in interest when the state borrows money. Moody’s Analytics predicted that Illinois will be dead last among all 50 U.S. states in job growth in 2014. It’s clear that those running state government have failed and change is long past due. On March 18, Republican primary voters have an opportunity to select the candidate they want to run against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election. State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are making a second run for the office. (Brady won the GOP nomination four years ago before losing a close election to Quinn.) Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford also is running, though his campaign has been rocked by sexual harassment charges leveled by a former staffer. Rounding out the field is businessman Bruce Rauner, whom we endorse. Rauner is not a career politician. In fact, this is his first run for public office. He supports term limits and, if he is elected, pledges to serve only two terms. He’s independently wealthy and will not be beholden to the special interest David Good, news editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
groups who have helped to corrupt Springfield. He will not be afraid to stand up to the powerful public employee unions who have resisted change. His wealth was not given to him. He earned it during a lifelong career as an investor and businessman. Rauner is blunt when assessing the state’s many problems. Workers’ compensation is crushing businesses and an impediment to job growth. Despite a recent reform measure, public pensions are overly generous and unsustainable in the long term. The state’s tax system is unduly burdensome to both taxpayers and businesses and needs to be reformed. Rauner knows big changes need to be made to get the state back on the right path. Despite the many challenges, and the fact that whoever wins the governor’s seat more than likely will have to work with Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and a Democrat-controlled General Assembly, Rauner is confident he can get the job done. He has a genuine love for Illinois and a desire to improve the quality of life here. Rauner also knows his limitations. He admits that he himself doesn’t have all the answers, but he promises to surround himself with the best and brightest and work as hard as necessary to succeed, just as he has in his professional life. Rauner has the energy, the charisma and the financial backing to stand up to Quinn in the fall and win. In the Republican primary for governor, we endorse Rauner.

Reader: Potholes a problem in Downers It is apparent Downers Grove is competing with Chicago when it comes to potholes. I have blown a tire and have had to have a realignment as a result of the condition of the streets in Downers Grove. One has to zigzag all over the road to miss the huge number of potholes. There is no reason why Downers cannot fill these holes. The county has taken care of filling the holes on county streets in Downers. What is the excuse that Downers has? When do they plan on filling in the holes, when summer gets here?

By using the roadway when it is dark outside, you are risking serious injury or death by wearing dark clothing. It is often difficult for drivers to see you when you blend in with the surroundings. Use a little precaution – either wear highly visible light clothing or wear a reflective vest (a variety of good reflective gear is available online for less than $10). Using a little common sense when sharing the roadway with cars might help prevent a tragic accident.

dgood@shawmedia.com Manju Goel showed no sign Tuesday of backing off her bid for U.S. Representative, despite a call from the Cook County Republican Party leader for her to withdraw from the race. “I have two Manju weeks left on Goel my campaign and I am focusing on the issues,” Goel said Tuesday. “That is my focus and I will not be diverted from that.” Larry Cook County Kaifesh GOP Chairman Aaron Del Mar in a news release Tuesday requested that Goel, of Aurora, drop out just two weeks prior to the March 18 primary election for the 8th Congressional District, which serves Lombard and Villa Park. A “fake” website is at the core of Del Mar’s accusation that Goel is operating a “smear” campaign against her opponent, Larry Kaifesh of Carpentersville. The website, larrykaifesh4congress.com, at first appears to be a campaign site for Kaifesh, but it actually serves to attack him. The site claims that Kaifesh’s campaign targeted ethnic minorities when it challenged the signatures in Goel’s nomination petition. It also alleges that Kai-

fesh’s residence in Illinois is only temporary. “I don’t know what site they are talking about,” Goel said. “I’ve been hearing and reading about it, but I do not have time to go looking into this frivolous site they’re talking about.” The super PAC Indian Americans for Freedom (IAFF) is listed as the sponsor for the website. In the news release, the Cook County Republican Party claimed that the IAFF is housed in Goel’s Carol Stream campaign headquarters. That claim also is part of a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission last month. “Absolutely not,” Goel said of sharing a campaign office with the IAFF. “I do not know the IAFF, who they are, what they are. … I have bigger fish to fry,” Goel said. Goel did say that Shalli Kumar, who also is named in the complaint to the FEC, is a supporter of her campaign but is not her campaign manager as Kaifesh claims. Kumar is listed on the IAFF website as one of the PAC’s founders. Goel said she has
no knowledge of his connection to the PAC and doesn’t want to know. Fundraising and helping with technical issues are among Kumar’s roles with the campaign, Kumar said Wednesday. The engineer confirmed he was a founder of the IAFF but said he has not been associated with the PAC since May 2013. Goel’s official campaign website questions Kaifesh’s permanence in Illinois and offers links to documents in an effort to support those claims. Goel’s residence in Aurora is outside of the district. Kaifesh, a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, said he was born and raised in Carpentersville, which is the 8th Congressional District. That remained his permanent residence while he attended college before beginning a 23-year career in the military, he said. “Did I live in Illinois while I was serving in Iraq and Afghanistan? No, it’d be kind of hard to do that,” said Kaifesh, who supports Del Mar’s request for Goel to withdraw from the race. “To attack me on my residency, it’s not only anti-military, it’s anti-American.” The Indian American Republican Organization endorses Kaifesh, who said he had nothing to do with the challenge of Goel’s petition signatures. “I did not challenge a single name on the petition,” Kaifesh said. “I never even saw the names. … That was a completely separate person that made that challenge.”

I was asked specifically if I would be more likely or less likely to vote for Ms. Pihos if I knew about three specific items, all of which showed her in a positive light. I was then asked about three specific items that showed Mr. Breen in a negative light. What I found offensive was the subliminal manipulation of the voter. If this was truly an attempt to gather data to see what would influence the voter, I would have been asked to rate both a positive and negative for each candidate. Instead, this was used as an underhanded way to plant negative seeds about Mr. Breen without casting a negative light on Ms. Pihos or her campaign. It was pure manipulation. District house seat, it is clear that Sandra Pihos’s bid is one race where the incumbent is the right choice. Sandra Pihos whole-heartedly deserves your vote to continue to serve her constituents and fight to control spending in Springfield. As an advocate for education (and past District 87 board member) and budget transparency, she will continue working alongside her fellow legislators to get our state back on track. More than ever we need Sandra’s practical experience and keen ability to work collectively across the aisle and continue to represent the 48th District’s best interests. Pihos is being challenged by conservative opponent Peter Breen, who seemingly is running more for his “pro-life at any cost” agenda than for being an advocate for the rest of us. Candidate Breen is not even in Springfield and it certainly appears that he has already been bought by the PAC’s who continue to fill our mailbox with his propaganda day in and day out. It’s clear that Sandy Pihos is the right choice, and she will continue her honest fight for the voters and not be a lackey for a deep pocketed PAC. Please join me Tuesday, March 18, and vote to keep Sandra Pihos in Springfield so she can continue to get the right things done for all of us. Robert Biddle Lombard

Omega prepares your favorites to the letter DOWNERS GROVE – Everyone knows the best dinner food is breakfast food; there’s just something about eggs Benedict or juicy blueberry pancakes that hits the spot, especially late night. So when my fellow diner and I originally scanned Omega Restaurant’s menu, we thought we’d head straight for the breakfast section – that is, until we saw its fully stocked dinner menu. With gourmet burgers, more than a dozen different sandwiches, steak, seafood and other dishes to choose from, we spent about 20 minutes just deciding on what to order. We kicked off the dining experience with Omega’s Famous Greek Saganaki – a fried cheese dish and, in my opinion, the best decision of the night. The appetizer was brought to the table in a personal-sized skillet and then lit on fire in front of us. Giant flames spread across the saganaki, providing not only mouthwatering flavor, but a surprising show, as well. Although the menu had us pulled in many directions, it was the traditional breakfast section that claimed both our palates. My choice was the Denver Omelette – with cheese, ham, green pepper, onion and added mushroom – while my companion went with the Omega Skillet – a pan stacked with hashbrowns, onions, choice of sausage or bacon, melted cheese and two eggs any style. While I was completely satisfied with my football-sized omelette – to the point where some leftovers found a place in my fridge – there are a couple items on the menu I’m already planning on tasting next time. Omega’s Saganaki Omelette sounds like a cheesy and deliciously appealing way to combine our previous appetizer and meals. But my biggest goal for the next visit is to save room for dessert so I (and a few friends) can tackle Omega’s Famous Tummy Buster Ice Cream Sundae – a

Even though the food alone was enough to convince me, what really made a trip to Omega worth it, was its outstanding service and homey atmosphere. One goal in mind
Montini girls aim to finish playoff run with state title
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Ever since last year’s loss in the state semifinal, Kateri Stone and the rest of Montini’s girls basketball team have had one thought on their minds. The Broncos have wanted to get back to state and win. They took care of the first part of that equation this week. Montini is heading back to state after defeating De La Salle 59-27 at the Hinsdale Central supersectional on Monday. Despite the success, the memory of the shock of the defeat to Vernon Hills in last year’s state semifinal hasn’t faded away. “Every single day, every practice, it’s on our minds,” Stone said. “It’s freshly imprinted.” The senior guard scored 17 points in the 54-31 win against Marshall in the Glenbard South sectional final Feb. 27. Rainey Kuykendall and Lea Kerstein each scored 13 points in the supersectional victory. This is Montini’s fifth straight state appearance and sixth in seven years. They’ve also won 10 straight sectional titles. Coach Jason Nichols said the team’s goal throughout the season and into the playoffs has been simply to get back to state. “If you don’t get downstate you can’t compete in the state finals, so we need to stay focused,” Nichols said. In the state semifinals, Montini will face Burlington Central. The 27-4 Rockets have won 12 games in a row. Three of the Rockets’ top four scorers are sophomores: Sam Pryor, Shelby Holt and Kayla Ross. Montini (32-2) has more experienced talent leading the

Here are Suburban Life Media’s 2014 girls basketball selections time to celebrate the accomplishments of some of the top players from locals schools with the 2013-14 girls basketball all-area team.
Jessica Bianchi
Olivia Domin
Kaitlyn Gehrke
Kelly Karlis
School: York Year: Junior Impact: The Dukes’ point guard was the catalyst for much of the team’s success. She led the team in scoring (8.1 points per game), assists (2.9) and steals (2.0). Bianchi’s quickness made her a tough defender and got things started for York’s offense.
School: Willowbrook Year: Senior Impact: Domin took over as the Warriors’ point guard this season and helped the team win the West Suburban Gold title. The senior led the team with about 3.5 assists per game and also averaged 8.7 points per game.
School: Timothy Christian Year: Junior Impact: Gehrke emerged as a solid player for the Trojans on a team that had five new starters and a first-year coach. The 6-foot-1 center was an all-conference selection in the Metro Suburban Conference.
School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: The Ohio recruit is a tough matchup for opposing teams because she is a 6-foot-2 guard with shooting range and ballhandling skills. Entering this weekend’s state tournament, Karlis was averaging 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
Molly Krawczykowski
Rainey Kuykendall
School: Willowbrook Year: Senior Impact: The Warriors needed someone to take over the scoring load after graduating a lot of talent from last year’s team, and the all-area MVP answered the call. Krawczykowski averaged a team-best 14.4 points per game and displayed an all-around game with about four rebounds, three assists and three steals per game.
School: Montini Year: Junior Impact: Kuykendall was a key bench contributor last year, but the junior forward emerged as a solid, strong player who is a staple in the Montini starting lineup. She is averaging 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Broncos heading into the state finals.
Honorable mention
Rory Manion
Sara Ross
Molly Schlecht
Kateri Stone
Grace Vitek
School: IC Catholic Year: Senior Impact: Manion was the rock for IC in the middle. She averaged more than nine points and nine rebounds per game and was a tough player that helped lead the Knights to their first trip to state. The senior forward earned her second state medal after helping the volleyball team win state in the fall.
School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: Ross is listed as a forward on the Montini roster, but managed to lead the team in assists. The IUPUI-bound senior is a strong player on the fast break and a good passer. She averages 3.4 assists per game while adding 7.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.
School: York Year: Senior Impact: The 6-foot-2 Schlecht was a force inside for York. She was tough for opponents to handle inside and used her size to lead the team in rebounds (5.8 per game). Schlecht, who was also a standout in volleyball, averaged 7.6 points per game.
School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: Stone enters state this weekend as Montini’s only double digit scorer. The Colgate-bound guard is averaging 11.8 points per game after having made 93 3-pointers to this point of the season. The 6-foot-1 guard also leads the Broncos in rebounding (5.1 per game).
School: IC Catholic Year: Senior Impact: Vitek led the Knights in scoring at 10 points per game, but she did a little bit of everything well as a 5-foot-11 guard. She led the team with just over three assists per game and was second on IC with just shy of five rebounds per game.
Addison Trail: Connie Barkoulies, Katie Dziabis Glenbard East: Allison Hansen, Brasia Solid IC Catholic: Erin Maloney, Abby Radoha Montini: Kelsey Bogdan Timothy Christian: Alexis Hoogendoorn Willowbrook: Melissa Rader, Josie Zabran York: Sarah Milkowski

ALL-AREA MVP
The key to success By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – As a standout track athlete, Molly Krawczykowski used her speed to her advantage at every opportunity on the basketball court. The Willowbrook senior guard was the mainstay star for the Warriors this season. After leading the team in scoring and filling whatever the role the team needed, Krawczykowski is the MVP of the girls basketball all-area team. She helped the team win its first West Suburban Gold title since 1996. “Conference was one of our biggest goals, so it was a really big deal when we went undefeated,” Krawczykowski said. Plenty of standout track athletes play other sports and use their athleticism to their advantage, and Krawczykowski was no exception. She grew three inches from her junior to senior year and used her length to her benefit. “Her first step is really quick and really long,” Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell said. “I really think she had as good of a first step or better than any other female player in the past couple years in this area.” She used her speed and good instincts on the court to often rack up quick points on transition layups. Krawczykowski was also able to create her own fast break opportunities as a quality defender. This year Krawczykowski moved from point guard to shooting guard because the makeup of the roster changed. She became the team’s leading scorer, but even after she hyperextended her knee in the Warriors’ first playoff game she did other things to make up for her inability to drive to

the basket like normal in the regional final. “She still gave us 12 points, but then she also gave us 10 rebounds,” Harrell said. “She stepped up as a rebounder. She gave us different things. There’s always something she could give you that would help make the team successful.” In a year where the Warriors had as many as four contributing players out with injury at the same time, Krawczykowski was a staple. She never missed a game. “She was somebody as a coach that you wanted there,” Harrell said. “She started her sophomore year. She was very key at that point, but mostly as a defender. She developed as a scorer her junior year.” Harrell thought Krawczykowski would wind up as a college basketball player. Instead, Krawczykowski will be heading to Illinois State to compete for the track team. Her specialty is the 800-meter run, an event in which she is already a two-time state qualifier. When picking schools, Krawczykowski didn’t prioritize athletics for her decision. She had a lot of interest from Division III basketball programs and some Division II schools had reached out about her, but ultimately she picked Illinois State track because of academics. “I really like ISU as a school and they have a great special education program, which is what I want to do,” she said.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
IC Catholic Senior | Basketball Why Brinkman was selected: Brinkman scored 24 points in an overtime victory against Winnebago in a Class 2A sectional semifinal Tuesday. IC Catholic senior guard Clark Brinkman led the Knights to a big playoff victory Tuesday. Brinkman scored a team-high 24 points and IC survived the game after a twohour trip to Bureau Valley. The Knights head back there tonight for the sectional final. Brinkman, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the team’s playoff run.

What’s the mood like with the team ahead of the sectional final? We’ve had a lot of rivalry games with AC, York, all those teams, but right now this sectional final game is going to be the biggest game of the season so far. It’s a chance to write our names down in school history. No other IC team has won a sectional final.

The Broncos won the Class 2A dual team state title Saturday in Bloomington by winning three duals, all by a wide margin. In addition to being the seventh straight title for Montini, it was the 12th state title overall for the dominant program. In the quarterfinal, Montini defeated Washington 50-18. The next match was a 57-9 win over Cahokia in a semifinal. The Broncos finished off the championship by defeating Geneseo 49-21. Fourth-place Knights enjoy state trip By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com NORMAL – The state finals didn’t go as planned for IC Catholic’s girls basketball team, but the Knights still had a memorable season in taking fourth place in Class 2A. IC lost two games at Normal’s Redbird Arena, settling for a fourth place trophy, but the Knights still went back to Elmhurst with a state trophy. “We were very thrilled and
very fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to spend some time together [last] weekend,” coach Aubree Lawrence-Schuett said. Prophetstown beat IC 57-48 in a semifinal Friday. Grace Vitek scored 24 points and eight rebounds, and Rory Manion added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.In Saturday’s third place game, IC lost a close one 32-28 to Teutopolis. The Knights led 16-12 at halftime, but ultimately fell
short despite 14 points from Abby Radoha. The three aforementioned Knights were the three seniors on the team and leave a lot behind for the program beyond the fact that they were the team’s top three scorers. “It was hands down the best four years of my coaching career,” Lawrence-Schuett said. “They’ve left big shoes to fill, but there are incoming freshmen and underclassmen that are waiting in the wings.”

New IHSA rule will effect several area schools By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The Illinois High School Association recently announced adjustments to its multiplier rule for private schools that should impact the class that some area programs compete in for the state playoffs. The new rule, called the Success Advancement Component by the IHSA, will move teams up a class if they win at least two state trophies during a four-year period. The new rule will take effect starting with the 2014-15 school year. This won’t have any impact on teams that are already competing in the highest class or sports that have just one class such as tennis, water polo, swimming and boys volleyball. Football, which has the most classes of any IHSA sport with eight, will have a slightly different take on the rule: • Starting with the 2015 season, schools would be moved up two classes if they made three state finals during a four-year period. • Starting in 2016, schools would be moved up three classes if they make four state finals in a row. ruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and iber that will keep you healthy and help you grow to be tall and strong. Vegetables come from the earth, grown on farms across this country and beyond. But don’t leave it to the farming professionals — this spring, start planting your own garden. Location: Find a place with plenty of sun. Look for good soil that is away from trees and bushes that have big roots or branches that might interfere with your growing plants. You also will need to think about water — is your garden near a hose, or do you have another way to water your plants? If you don’t have access to land, plant your seeds in pots on a sunny porch or balcony. plan: Plants need space, so make sure not to overcrowd. Keep-
ing your seeds in rows helps you stay organized and can give your plants room to grow. Draw out a plan to maximize space.
WORD FIND Find these veggie words: Beans Broccoli Carrots Corn Lettuce
Peas Peppers Spinach Squash Zucchini
follow instructions: Read the directions on each pack of seeds, and follow them closely. If the directions say to plant each seed 2 feet apart, make sure to do that. Even though they might start out as little seeds, some plants can grow quite large, especially if you are doing a good job with them. maintain: Common gardening tools include a hose, watering
can, spade, rake and hoe. You will need a way to dig into the earth to plant your seeds, and also need tools to maintain your garden. Some of these can be helpful in removing weeds that will sprout up and crowd your plants. And don’t forget to water! If your plants are looking and feeling dry, make sure to give them a healthy shower.

HEALTH WATCH
If you’ve been diagnosed with high LDL or “bad” cholesterol, know that you are not alone. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance, and some cholesterol is needed for your body to function normally. However, having too much “bad” cholesterol and not enough “good” cholesterol can cause plaque to build up on the walls of your arteries, putting you at elevated risk for heart disease and stroke. Since high “bad” cholesterol doesn’t cause many symptoms, a great deal of people may not realize their levels are too high, underscoring the importance of getting cholesterol levels checked. Doctors recommend adults have their cholesterol levels screened every five years (sooner if you already have been diagnosed with high cholesterol). A blood test can determine your cholesterol levels. Controlling your weight, staying physically active and making healthful food choices can help lower “bad” cholesterol. For many people, however, heredity plays a role and even with lifestyle changes, their “bad” cholesterol may continue to be too high. In those cases, a doctor may prescribe medication to help reduce the “bad” cholesterol.

Need help navigating the insurance maze? Consult with your local librarian By elana gordon wHYY
What can’t librarians do? Many are now becoming health insurance guides. The buzz at the American Library Association’s winter meeting recently wasn’t just about the annual awards (a.k.a. the book award “super bowl”); the Affordable Care Act also was on the agenda. Libraries across the country have been trying to meet a growing demand for health insurance information. At the Free Library of Philadelphia’s central branch, library coordinator Nani Manion has started running twiceweekly enrollment clinics in the technology lab. Manion is one of 33 librarians in the Philly system who have undergone a five-hour training session to become certified application counselors. At least through March, 12 library locations in Philadelphia are taking individual sign-up appointments or hosting these walk-in sessions. The library cites data estimating that 210,000 Philadelphia residents lack health insurance. “It started off slow,” says Manion, but the pace has picked up; one recent day, six people showed up for help. That might not seem like a lot, but the process for some individuals took nearly two hours. “I could have used more assistance,” she says. The added service means trade-offs. While Manion conducts sessions, another computer class is on hold. Last summer, the Free Library’s director, Siobhan Reardon, issued a system-wide request for librarians who were interested the training. “Our role here in library land has been changing rapid fire,” says Reardon. “The trail into getting insurance is not a neatly designed trail, and so there’s nothing better than a librarian to help navigate.”
Key sources Libraries have always been more than book lenders, providing services that include early childhood education, employment assistance and computer literacy skills. The economic downturn heightened the need for those services, and health information has long been in demand.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services estimates 28 million people sought health information from libraries in one year. Last summer, IMLS issued a $286,104 grant to craft webinars geared toward librarians. More than 1,000 have participated since that launched, says Mamie Bittner, director of government affairs for IMLS. “There are pressures on libraries ... but meeting the high priority information needs of their community, that is their job,” she says.
‘We saw an influx’ Bittner says libraries all over “are assuming a variety of roles” as it relates to the Affordable Care Act. In Delaware, state librarian Annie Norman says they’ve been thirsty for useful, accurate information so they can best assist patrons. “We saw such an influx of people needing job assistance, that when this big health care initiative was coming in, we thought ‘They’re going to be coming in — 35,000 people could be on our doorstep with questions,’ so we wanted to be prepared to help them,” Norman says. The system first turned to the state, which is running the health care marketplace in partnership with the federal government. Libraries in Delaware have since hosted more than three dozen public events. Navigators, or federally certified application assistors, have used library space to meet with people and help them enroll. Norman says they haven’t seen the influx of people they had initially expected, but they’re also tracking the questions — 300 so far — people have, so they can better respond to insurance questions in the future. “We’re laying the foundation for years to come,” says Cathay Keough, coordinator of reference services for Delaware’s Division of Libraries.
