said Sarah Richardt, executive director of the Lombard Town Centre. Richardt called the feedback she has received from business owners “a mixed bag.” “Some are very concerned about the construction,” Richardt said Wednesday afternoon. “[But] others are really excited and are going to offer specials for Union Pacific and Metra workers.” The Lombard Town Centre will host a business forum April 9 that will be attended

by village officials, and despite concerns from members of the business community, Richardt is hopeful the meeting will alleviate any fears. The Lombard Metra Station is located along the Union Pacific West Line. John Burns Construction and Union Pacific also are working on a separate $1.6 million project to rehabilitate the station’s platforms. The work is expected to be completed simultaneously with the underpass project, officials said.

Some of the fastest cardiac treatment times in the nation? Amazing.

During a heart attack, a delay in care means damage to your heart. Which is why Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is proud to provide some of the fastest arrival to treatment times in the country. Last year alone, our average door to treatment time was just 60 minutes. With a national average of over an hour and a half, that’s a difference that saves heart muscle and lives.

Helen Plum Library director to retire after 25-year run SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – As technology continues to alter the way libraries function, the need for outstanding service has remained consistent, said Bob Harris, director of the Helen Plum Memorial Library, 110 W. Maple St. in Lombard. “We are still helping people connect to a world of information,” said Harris, who will retire on Aug. 15 following 25 years as director of the library. “This is a wonderful library that deserves someone with new ideas and new energy,” said Harris, 68. “Bob has done a good job running the library,” said Ginny Carlson, president of the library’s board of trustees. “He is ready to retire and it will be good to have new leadership.” The library board last month hired John Keister and Associates as a consultant to find a replacement for Harris, Carlson said. The board is scheduled to meet with the firm this week to discuss criteria of their search, Carlson said Tuesday afternoon. A library director needs to be a problem solver who

Bob Harris, director of the Helen Plum Memorial Library, talks to Marlene Stratton, youth services associate Wednesday. Harris, 68, will retire in August after 25 years as director of the library. is knowledgeable and experienced about services and procedures, Harris said. Above all, a good director needs to be a people person, he said. “Most of my work is dealing with people,” Harris said. “You have to understand what motivates them and be compassionate and fair.” Harris said the library’s next director should be someone who is willing to get out in the community and be a good

face for the library and the village, Harris said. Harris, of Bloomingdale, describes himself as “bookish” and said he was more interested in learning than sports and parties at a young age. As a teenager, he was a page at a library in Detroit. “I just really loved the environment,” he said. “People don’t go into library service unless they love libraries.” After earning his master’s

degree in library science from the University of Michigan, Harris began his career at the Chicago Public Library. Upon retirement, Harris said he has a “specific plan” that involves working on his physical and spiritual health by attending more lectures, museums and theatre performances. “It’s a journey inward to develop more of my strengths,” Harris said.

LOMBARD – When Pearl Gannon took the stage at the Ms. Wheelchair Illinois competition last month, she didn’t have a speech prepared, but she knew what needed to be said. “I have always wanted to go out and speak about disabilities, awareness and positive mental health,” Gannon said she told the judges. “[Because] when you have a disability that gets worse over time, you deal with that depression.” Gannon, 27, a Lombard native and a former Villa Park resident, was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Illinois 2014 on March 22, and will now use her platform to raise awareness about issues affecting individuals living with disabilities, including societal prejudices.

“She is not afraid to overcome the disability that she has.”

Kathy Reinhardt, head coach of the Sky, said she admires Gannon for her endurance and spirit. “I have a lot of faith in her,” Reinhardt said. “She is not afraid to overcome the disability that she has.” Gannon’s disability means she is often more fatigued than other players on the court, but with the aid and tutelage of Reinhardt, who has multiple sclerosis and can relate, Gannon has continued to thrive. Ms. Wheelchair America? Gannon has about 10 speaking engagements lined up this year, and will begin campaign-

While Gannon would love to win, she is more enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to meet the other state winners. “It’s really going to be about learning everyone’s platforms and how we can use that in our own states to raise awareness,” Gannon said. “She’s going to be a fine representative for Illinois,” Reinhardt said. “I am extremely proud of her. This is going to be a challenge for her endurance-wise, but I think over the course of playing basketball, she’s learned how to pace herself and that is what she is going to do.” Gannon’s long-term dream is to compete with the USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team in the 2016 Paralympic Games, but she knows her CMT may hinder that. More importantly, Gannon is studying to be a social worker focused on early intervention. “For me, getting a degree is more important because that way I can make a difference in people’s lives,” Gannon said.

Helpful tips for preparing your taxes Did you know that our tax code is over four million words long, or more than 10 times the size of the Bible? With roughly 4,400 changes in the last decade, our complex code makes filing taxes a daunting task for millions of Americans each year. To avoid missing out on a tax credit or making a mistake that would trigger a fine, or worse, an audit, Americans end up spending some $160 billion complying and lose 6 billion hours working through the rules and regulations of the code annually. Fortunately, there are tax assistance programs and COMMUNITY resources that can help you VOICE navigate the burdensome Peter tax code. With less than two Roskam weeks until your tax returns are due, make sure you know about these helpful programs as you file. For individuals who make $58,000 or less, the Free File Program provides free access to online tax preparation through some of the most well-known tax software companies like TurboTax and HR Block. Over 100 million taxpayers are eligible to benefit from this service which is why I introduced legislation to make the Free File Program permanent. It is a win-win for everyone – taxpayers have already saved a total of $1.1 billion since the program’s start in 2003 while costing the federal government nothing. There are also programs that provide in-person help to Americans that qualify. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program sets up free tax return preparation between certified volunteers and taxpayers making $52,000 or less. Working with one of these professionals can help individuals navigate the tax code, and potentially save hundreds of dollars in the process. For taxpayers 60 years old or older, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program provides a similar service to VITA, matching qualified volunteers who are experts in pension and retirement issues with older Americans. VITA and TCE sites can be found all over the Sixth District – from Naperville to Barrington – and can also be found by calling 800-906-9887 and 888-227-7669, respectively. April 15 is less than two weeks away, so make sure you’re prepared. Take time to double-check all the paperwork before singing anything. And don’t forget to file your return – in 2010 alone, the IRS reported a shocking $760 million in unclaimed refunds. For people who feel they cannot file by the deadline, request a filing extension to avoid fines. For more tips and resources, feel free to contact my office at 2700 International Drive, Suite 304, West Chicago, IL 60185, or by calling 630-232-0006.

Lombard resident John Egan thanks the village for its decades of support during a Lombard Village Board meeting. The village board proclaimed March 21 “John Egan Day.”

John Egan has done a lot for Lombard, so it was only fitting that the village did something for him in return. March 21 of this year was proclaimed “John Egan Day” in honor of his accomplishments, including his roles over the years with the Lombard Jaycees, the Lombard Park District and the Lombard Historical Society. A Lombard resident since 1948, Egan, 90, clearly belongs in the first row of those who’ve helped make Lombard great. Congratulations to Frank and Kathy Cicciato, whose Lombard-based Katherine Frank Creative company recently marked 20 years of business. The exhibit design company mostly serves clients in the professional beauty industry.

They don’t get Social Security, and you’re not telling people that. It’s not right.

We certainly have plenty of problems in Illinois and the United States, and one of the biggest problems is ignorance. The United States should do everything in its power to deter a communist leader such as [Vladimir] Putin from occupying a sovereign nation such as the Ukraine. A safe and permanent home isn’t something a child should only dream about

ED • Friday, April 4, 2014 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, I heard water running (sounded like Niagara Falls). In our bathroom, hot water and steam were shooting out from under the sink. My husband, being in a wheelchair, could not help. Our son’s phone was not on at that time. I called 911 and was transferred to the fire department. On the telephone, they made sure there were no electrical outlets by the floor so we would not be electrocuted. Within minutes, three firefighters were coming up my driveway. They assessed the situation and took care of the problem for us. What a great comfort it is to know whatever the emergency is, our Glen Ellyn Fire Department is there to help. I am so grateful, and I want to say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart.

GLEN ELLYN – Al Lewek is the definition of a self-made man. The owner of Lewek Photography and Frame Studio, 507 Pennsylvania Ave., is celebrating his 35th year in business and refers to his Glen Ellyn storefront as a second home. “The only thing I’m missing in the back is a cot,” he said. Lewek’s love of photography was established decades ago, when the Wheaton-Carol Stream native took a high school job in the photo department at Montgomery Ward of Yorktown Center. That position led to Lewek being hired as a clerk at Yorktown Camera in 1967. It was there, he said, that he received his industry training, learning about business, sales, customer service, photo equipment, camera accessories and darkroom work. “I just pretty much taught myself based on what I saw and what I liked,” Lewek said. He devoured books and magazines about photography and shot his first professional job in 1969. Lewek opened his original studio five years later on Westmont Avenue in Lombard, before relocating to downtown Glen Ellyn four years after that, late in 1978. He’s been there ever since. His studio has always been a one-man operation, with the exception of his wife’s help early on and a business assistant he employed for 13 years in the middle of his career. Most of his customers are referrals, he said, and residents of the Wheaton-Glen Ellyn area. “The community’s been fabulous,” he said. “They appreciate this type of service and product.” Lewek, a Lombard resident,

has been a member of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce since opening his studio three and a half decades ago. He is also a 25-year member of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn and has previously served as president of both organizations. “Al is one of those lovely, giving guys,” said chamber co-executive director Georgia Koch. Lewek offers family and business portraits, digital printing and retouching, event photography, vintage restoration, passport pictures and framing. He no longer works weddings, although he estimates he’s photographed close to 3,000 throughout his career, nor does he take children’s portraits. Lewek said he’s seen the industry change. With the shifting emphasis on digital images, people rarely open photo and framing studios today. “It’s important to balance the new with the old,” said Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn Executive Director Carol White. “I think that’s what Al does for us.” Despite a decline in business during the recession, Lewek said demand has grown in recent years. “It’s been a nice ride so far,” he said. He plans to keep up the business for another five or 10 years, before selling or closing it to retire. “I’d like to hit the 40 years mark,” he said, “just to say I did it.”

Church lights up during difficult time

NEWS |

By the numbers The lighting renovations at First Church of Lombard UCC is expected to save 32,514 annual kilowatt hours. Project Green Environmental Solutions said that number is equivalent to: 8: Tons of waste sent to a landfill 24,072: Pounds of coal burned 52.1: Barrels of oil consumed

Rob Hatfield, the church’s pastor for 25 years, died of a heart attack in February 2013. As the church family grieved its sudden loss, the lighting project started in May and progressed during the next several months. One year later on Feb. 16, the church named Hatfield Hall after its long-time pastor. Three days before the dedication ceremony, the final lights were installed. “It was perfect timing,” Herbert said, adding that improving the lighting had been a goal of Hatfield’s. “These people coming in at this difficult time in the church’s history was really neat.” The Lombard church learned about Project Green and the grant by word of mouth from another church. After serving as liaison between the church and Project Green, Herbert, who owned a home improvement business before retiring, said he would definitely recommend this opportunity to other nonprofits. “It’s overwhelming. They wanted to do this,” Herbert said of Project Green. “I understand the firm gets paid for this. But they went above and beyond on this.” In addition to using less energy, the new florescent bulbs are expected to last up to 10 years and the LED lights 25 years. “None of us are going to miss getting up on big tall letters and changing bulbs,” Herbert said.

LBS/VPA

LOMBARD – The naked eye might not be able to detect what $44,000 in lighting renovations looks like, but the environmental impact for First Church of Lombard UCC is difficult to miss. More than $44,000 in outside financial assistance allowed the church, 220 S. Main St. in Lombard, to upgrade its lighting with energy-efficient florescent and LED bulbs in all three of its buildings: Outreach House, Maple Street Chapel and the main church building. In the recently renamed Hatfield Hall on the church’s main campus, the upgrades reduced the room’s wattage needs from 15,000 watts to just 1,100, according to Larry Hebert, a member of the church’s management committee. Nearly 140 bulbs were changed in the main sanctuary, and even the six light towers in the parking lot received a makeover and went from 960 watts to 78 watts each. A grand total of 32,514 annual kilowatt hours will be saved (from 40,810 to 8,296) as a result of the upgrades, according to Project Green Environmental Solutions, which did the work. Replacing the fixtures and bulbs in Hatfield Hall alone cost about $10,000. “It was going to be a long time before the church was able to do something like that,” Herbert said. That’s where Project Green came in. The Forest Park company, a Commonwealth Edison trade ally, helped the church obtain a Small Business Energy Savings subsidy from ComEd and a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, which combined to cover about 72 percent of the project costs. Project Green president Michael Holmes said his company chipped in the rest in the form of labor and engineering costs. “We do so many regular businesses, when we get a chance to do something good like this … we jump at the chance,” Holmes said. “We get to help out and feel good about it too.” The opportunity came at a difficult time for the church.

When Cathy and Dave Seiden heard their local Jewel-Osco had recently sold a winning $1 million lottery ticket, the couple immediately began tearing the house apart to find a ticket Cathy had just bought from the store. “That’s where I grocery shop every week and I often buy a lottery ticket while I’m there,” Cathy told the Illinois Lottery. After a frantic search, the Downers Grove family found their ticket in a stack of papers and checked the winning Mega Millions numbers on www.ill inoislottery.com. The Downers Grove residents won $1 million, matching the first five numbers in the March 18 Mega Millions drawing. “We were absolutely shocked,” she said. “We feel very lucky.”

Cathy bought the winning ticket out of the lottery selfserve machine at Jewel-Osco, 2317 75th St. in Woodridge, according to an Illinois Lottery press release. The retailer received a $10,000 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. Dave works in Information Technology for Valley View School District and Cathy is a first grade teacher for Downers Grove School District 58. “Cathy is a very organized person, but she gave the ticket to me and I had no idea where I put it,” Dave said. The family plans to invest the windfall in college funds for their two children. When asked if he had any advice for other lottery players Dave told the Illinois Lottery, “Sign the back of your ticket… and let an organized person hold onto it.”

Restaurant reviews

Mago conjures lively setting for Mexican dining BOLINGBROOK – When dining out, sometimes it’s nice to get hit with some degree of spectacle – bright colors, live music and big tastes. For those times, Mago Grill & Cantina in Bolingbrook is a fine place to indulge in elevated Mexican fare. The decor hits you like a hot pepper. The walls are painted in bright purple and orange, with the restaurant’s name in giant, pop-art letters adorning one side. Rows of luchador masks line the back walls. Another wall shows off row upon row of various tequilas and spirits, all in colorful displays. A live mariachi band began playing among patrons as my date and I left – and the table they were singing to seemed delighted. The meal started like many do at Mexican restaurants, with chips and salsa. Mago, however, upped the ante with warm chips and a trio of three brightly colored and wonderfully fresh and flavorful salsas. The cilantro-based one was a personal favorite. We followed with a ceviche tasting, featuring a citrusy shrimp, lime and cilantro tilapia, and scallop chile. Much like their salsa predecessors, all three were highly distinctive. The scallop, in particular, was well-cooked and deftly balanced with some vinegar acidity. The shrimp dish included olive tidbits, adding a layer of complexity and welcome contrast with the other two. And the main events – the chicken mole and the beef and cheese chile rellenos – both deeply impressed. I noticed that Mago devoted an entire page of the menu to five different types of mole sauces and their eight meat

Thankfully, that time and dedication were evident in the flavor. The mole ranchero, featuring chile ancho, chile pasilla and pumpkin seeds, was very straightforward, but had a ring of authentic smokiness that screamed care and love. And simply put, the rellenos were some of the best I have ever had. Both the cheese and beef versions were perfectly breaded and fried, with nary a bit of batter coming off the peppers as you ate them. But the true test was my date, who is a connoisseur of the stuff. She, too, gave them the stamp of approval – they managed to have strong flavors without overpowering any one ingredient. The beef was well-seasoned and stood its own under delicious heaps of sauce, while the cheese had just enough body to remain intact yet perfectly melted.

Experienced pitching a plus for Glenbard East Rams look to youth to build program By DAN SANTAROMITA

Glenbard East’s Scott Borosak heads into third base during Tuesday’s game against Addison Trail at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst. After seeing some action last year, Borosak should be a big contributor this spring.

also has losses to defending Class 4A champ Mount Carmel and 2013 sectional finalist Lincoln-Way East. “We’re just inconsistent right now,” Pelland said. “We’ve played some really quality teams, which is another good thing, to see how we compete against quality teams.” Another sophomore, Ryan Schefske is batting leadoff while playing shortstop. Junior John Allen has been in the middle of the order while also pitching. The Rams have made some mistakes in early games so far. Pelland is hoping the team be ready when DuPage Valley Conference play starts April 14 at West Aurora. “It’s just a process,” Pelland said. “As bad as you want to win every game, you really got to take all these nonconference games and just learn from them so that when conference runs around you’re at your best.”

“We got a lot of youth. We got a few seniors. Our pitching staff is pretty much all seniors. We got a few juniors that are stepping up into some relief roles and maybe will step up into starting roles.” Joel Pelland Glenbard East coach

LOMBARD – Glenbard East’s baseball team brings a younger squad to the diamond this season with just one fulltime starter returning. Tyler Behrendt will hit high in the Rams’ order and be one of the team’s top pitchers. Fellow seniors Scott Borosak and Anthony Esterly saw some time last year as well. Behrendt, Esterly and fellow senior Jimmy MacDonald lead the Rams’ starting rotation. Sophomore Michael Sebby is next in line among the starters and also has started in the outfield during the Rams’ crowded early schedule. “We got a lot of youth,” coach Joel Pelland said. “We got a few seniors. Our pitching staff is pretty much all seniors. We got a few juniors that are stepping up into some relief roles and maybe will step up into starting roles.” Pelland is starting to get an idea of who he can rely on within the squad since the Rams already played seven games before they headed downstate Thursday for a spring break trip for three more games this weekend. The Rams were 3-4 after Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to Downers Grove North, a sectional finalist last year. East

Montini’s Austin Kline throws across the diamond to get a baserunner during a game last season. Kline is one of several seniors that will anchor the Broncos’ batting order this spring.

LOMBARD – After having a powerful offense last year, Montini’s baseball team will rely on its pitching staff this season. The Broncos return Eric Frontzak, Sean Frontzak and Tyler Quick to the mound after each saw significant time and handled varsity ball well a year ago. Eric Frontzak posted five wins with a 1.75 ERA as a junior. Junior Jordan Lazowski, who is in line to be the fourth starter, drew comparisons to Greg Maddux from coach Bob Landi. “I’ve never seen a kid in my years of coaching that can hit his spots as well as he can,” Landi said. “He doesn’t throw very hard, but it’s amazing how frustrated kids are against this kid.” Junior left-hander Kyle Jackson also joins the staff after transferring from St. Patrick. Offensively, the Broncos will be senior-dominated. Tom Long (catcher), Austin

Kline (third base) and Eddie Bava (shortstop) are all thirdyear starters. First baseman Jake Mecacci was the backup catcher last year, but he hit .450 in the summer and is slated to be the No. 3 hitter for Montini after committing to St. Mary’s (Minn.). Kline has committed to Brunswick Community College in North Carolina. Senior centerfield Rhett Wojkovich also will bring a lot of speed to the lineup. “We’d love to defend our conference title,” Landi said. “We’ve got some good pitching, and with the experience we have we should have a pretty good season.”

Rams start strong, play in tourney title game By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BRIDGEVIEW – Given the size of Toyota Park’s field, Glenbard East girls soccer coach Kent Overbey figured chances would be few and far between for the Windy City Classic final. The Rams held off Lincoln-Way North through the run of play, but Brenna Stremlau scored from more than 30 yards out on a lofted free kick for the only goal of the game. North won 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Toyota Park. “Frankly, I think our biggest issue is we’re not used to playing on a field this size,” Overbey said. “We got the ball outside, we saw a lot of success, but you just get pulled out of

Alex Ruffer, Brittany Paganucci and Jordyn Fulton tried to engineer changes for the Rams, but they could not crack the scoresheet in the 60-minute match. Regardless of the loss, the Rams still are off to a strong 4-1-1 start to the season and earned the trip to play in a professional stadium with their solid tourney run. “It’s been a good tournament for us,” said Ruffer, a Western Michigan recruit. “The first couple games of the John Cox for Suburban Life Media season it’s always going to be Glenbard East’s Taylor Hallcox battles for possession of the ball Saturday a little rough, but I thought we during the Windy City Classic championship game against Lincoln-Way played really well.” After the tournament final, North at Toyota Park. After advancing to the final, the Rams tied Downers Grove North 2-2 on March 27 with both goals coming from Ruffer. “For a preseason tournament, we’re in great shape right now,” Overbey said. “We got four shutouts, so the defense was playing great. Why Conenna was selected: From March 27 to 29, Conenna started all three games and gave up three runs in 12 innings while striking out 19 and was 6-for-8 at the plate.

Santaromita: What made you want to commit to Northern Illinois? Conenna: I knew I wanted to stay close to home, and it’s only an hour drive away. I was at a camp in Peoria where a ton of Division I schools were at. Coach [Christina] Sutcliffe helped me with my pitching. I was assigned to her team when we played games. She has so much energy and she brings so much intensity to games. I wanted to go where the coach was a pitcher, and she was.

mund and Brian Johnson. Rothmund is a big, powerful first baseman headed for Illinois-Springfield. Seniors Tyler Vavrek and Tyler Zunkel, a transfer from York, also have varsity experience. Zunkel brings speed to the leadoff spot in the bat-

ting order. The current junior class won the conference title as sophomores. Talents such as catcher Dom McDonnell, outfielder Trey Jones and pitcher Mike Petruzzi will try to make an early impact. Sophomore pitcher Matt Pizur had an impressive summer and has the inside track to join Case and Cady in the threeman conference rotation. “I believe we will be very deep in our pitching department,” Wisner said. “I think we could really surprise some people who think we lost so much with last year’s team. We will be able to put the ball in play better and run better than we have.”

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Willowbrook’s baseball team was third in the West Suburban Gold last year with a lot of key seniors. Despite the losses to graduation, coach Vic Wisner thinks the Warriors still have enough pieces to contend in the Gold again. Senior pitchers T.J. Cady also will be a big part of the lineup, along with seniors Mike Roth-

JESSICA CONENNA

IC Catholic junior pitcher Jessica Conenna helped the Knights win three games in a row last weekend with contributions as both a hitter and pitcher. The Northern Illinois recruit started all three games as a pitcher and was 6-for-8 with two doubles and four RBIs at the plate. The Knights entered Thursday’s game against Proviso West with a 5-0 record. Conenna, this week’s Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the team’s hot start, her college commitment and the team’s goal for the season.

BRANDPOINT

Healthy food that also tastes good is always in vogue, and now it’s getting a spring makeover. The theme of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and National Nutrition Month this March is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” As spring approaches and fitness routines move outdoors, remember that healthy snacks can fuel a workout and get you through the day. Becci Twombley, director of sports nutrition at the University of Southern California and ambassador for the American Pistachio Growers, suggests some snacking experiments: 1. Pick one proteinbased ingredient and think about different ways to eat it. Twombley often recommends pistachios as a performance snack because, calorie-for-calorie, pistachios pack more protein than most common snacks. As a snack ingredient, pistachios can be baked into homemade energy bars, sprinkled on yogurt or combined with dried fruit in a makeyour-own trail mix. 2. Work backwards. Think about your favorite snacks, and then experiment with different ways to add new proteins to that snack. Love the portability of sport bars, but not the lengthy ingredient list that can accompany some store-bought brands? Instead, make your own sport bars to control the ingredients in your own kitchen. 3. Get creative with the ultimate snack duo: protein and fiber. Rather than buying a traditional trail mix, make your own mix of pistachios and your favorite dried fruit. Mix pistachios with air popped popcorn for a satisfying and filling post-workout snack. Or make your own easy and portable American Pistachio Fruit Chews, which combine a mixture of fresh and dried fruit and pistachios. — Brandpoint
