Annual Lombard event ends with fanfare LOMBARD – With the sun shining and spring temperatures returning, the 2014 Lombard Lilac Parade made its way down Main Street on Sunday afternoon. The parade, “Oh, the Places You Will Go,” featured 2014 Lilac Queen Kendall Kott and her court, Lilac Parade Grand Marshal Clifford “Smitty” Smith, the Glenbard East High

School Marching Band, local officials and dozens of other clubs and dignitaries. It signified the end of Lombard’s annual “Lilac Time,” which ran May 3 to 18 and included featured events such as the Lilac Queen Coronation, the Lilac Ball and various festivities in Lilacia Park, 150 S. Park Ave., including heritage tours, beer and wine tastings and Saturday’s Mutt Strut 5K and Puppy Path.

Lombard trustees reject electric aggregation By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – In an effort to save residents money on future energy bills, Lombard trustees on May 15 approved a motion to reject bids from several companies and return to Commonwealth Edison as the village’s energy supplier. The Lombard Village Board of Trustees voted 4-0 at its regular meeting last week to follow a staff recommendation to reject several bids through the Municipal Electric Aggregation Program. Trustees Reid Foltyniewicz (District 3) and Peter Breen (District 4) both had excused absences from the meeting. The bids, which were received on May 15, all came in higher than ComEd’s rate of 7.48 cents per kilowatt hour. ComEd’s new rate is for a oneyear period beginning June 1. Despite the return to

ComEd, customers in Lombard – and across Northern Illinois – can expect to see higher bills this summer as electric rates rise. While lower than all bids received, ComEd’s new rate is 21 percent more than before. Of the bids received, Constellation Energy’s was the most competitive, at 7.74 cents per kilowatt hour. “We will always be able to go out to the competitive market in one year,” said Lombard Village Manager Scott Niehaus. “We see no reason to lock village residents into a rate higher than ComEd.” Prior to the vote, officials

stressed that returning to ComEd is in the best interest of residents, and reiterated that the contract can be revisited annually. “We are not locked into a contract,” said Lombard Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick (District 5). “Citizens can (also) go to another provider, if they chose.” The village’s current aggregation contract with First Energy will expire in July. Trustees on April 3 voted unanimously to reject six electric supply bids, all of which were higher than ComEd rates. “We want to make sure we

have a lot of flexibility for our citizens and we’re not going to lock them into a rate that ComEd might beat in the future,” Niehaus said after the first round of bids were received. “The pricing we received today does not show any savings.” In April 2012, Lombard voters approved a measure to allow the village to negotiate lower electrical rates, and the village subsequently approved a 24-month contract with First Energy at a rate of 4.64 cents per kilowatt hour. In the first 15 months, the program saved a total of $3.36 million, about $246 per house-

hold, said Director of Finance Tim Sexton. At the time, the price was at a 10-year low, but it started to climb this year, Sexton said. Residents who do not wish to use ComEd can individually chose their provider. Homeowners enrolled in the village aggregation program will receive a letter from ComEd, at which time they can opt out without being charged a termination fee from First Energy. Officer Jean responded at about 3:45 a.m. Sept. 27 to a home in the 400 block of West Harrison Road to investigate a harassment by telephone complaint. A man in the home abruptly threw open the door, brandishing a handgun. “Officer Jean found himself staring down the barrel of a

handgun,” Byrne said. Falling backward to “exit the kill zone,” Jean had the presence of mind to upholster his service weapon and fire three rounds, causing the offender to drop his weapon, Byrne said. The offender was subsequently apprehended and the fully loaded handgun was recovered.

No one was shot or injured during the exchange. The department only has issued three medals of valor in the past decade. “We don’t give it out randomly,” Byrne said. “It’s something that is reserved for rare instances and presented to officers who exhibit extreme bravery.”

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Returning home from the South Pacific after more than three years in a Japanese prison camp, World War II veteran John Allen Bigelow remembers rolling past Lombard while on a train bound for Hines Veteran Hospital. “Now that was a thrill,” Bigelow recalls in his autobiography. “I told the other guys, ‘Come here, look, that’s where I live’.” The recollection is one of many that Bigelow, who died in 2008, recounts in his autobiography, “American Soldier: A Love Story.” The book, released earlier this month on Amazon, details the life of Bigelow, a world-traveler, military veteran, avid sailor and a Lombardian. The book was edited by Bigelow’s friend and brother-inlaw Leonard Biedermann, also a World War II veteran and a former Lombard resident. “His life was so interesting,”

Bigelow, who died in 2008 at age 91, was a prisoner of war for more than three years before being released. Biedermann, 89, said Monday during a phone interview. “Every time we got together, I would hear another story and I would make a note of it.” One day, the two veterans sat down with an old cassette player, and Biedermann recorded the stories that would eventually comprise the book. It took Biedermann roughly two years to edit the book, which involved putting the

stories into a chronological sequence, careful fact-checking and finding maps and other visuals to illustrate the stories. The book is broken into three sections–Pre World War II, World War II and Post-World War II– to help the reader understand that all Bigelow’s pre-war experiences helped him survive, and that his traumatic accounts of the war lead to personal choices when he returned to civilian life, Bidermann explained. “As I look back, I realize I never would have survived the war if I hadn’t had some very basic experiences of travel and adventure prior to the war,” Bigelow states in the book’s preface.

“American Soldier” begins in Lombard in 1927, where Bigelow describes his childhood growing up in a home next to Sacred Heart Church. The Bigelow yard featured more than 40 lilac bushes. “Our yard was like a park,” Bigelow said. A youth full of pretending to sail ships in the backyard led Bigelow to the Great Lakes and eventually the oceans, where he would spend three years following high school sailing around the world on various vessels. In 1941, Bigelow and fellow Lombardian Joe Korczyk– knowing they would soon be drafted into the military– decided to enlist. Bigelow was stationed in Baatan, a province in the Philippines north of Manila. During a firefight with the Japanese in April 1942, Bigelow was shot in the left leg and eventually captured. He would spend the next three years as a prisoner of war to the Japanese, where he would endure starvation, forcible labor and rampant disease. Once liberated, Bigelow would return stateside, where he would often struggle to find normalcy in the post-war

world. Yet despite the challenges, he would meet his eventual wife, Emily, and continue to live a unique and exciting life. “I think an important lesson in the book is these servicemen come back and they all have a problem,” Biedermann said. “I think it’s important that he survived that and showed that he did find a way to live peacefully after the war even though he had been through hell.” Along with first-hand accounts, the book contains photocopies of letters Bigelow sent to his father while he was a POW in Japan, including one where he discusses what freedom means to him. “I would love to see every high school kid read that one paragraph,” Biedermann said. For Amy Halm, Bigelow’s goddaughter, the recounts in the book are treasures that everyone should appreciate from one of the most important eras in modern history. “I hope it helps people appreciate older people they know and probe a little bit deeper about their past–military or not,” Halm said. “There is so much treasure in their memories.”

The state fight for a solution to its pension problems took a turn last week when a Sangamon County judge decided to delay legislators’ latest effort. On May 14, Judge John Beliz ordered a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the reforms set out in Senate Bill 1, which cuts cost of living increases, lowers contributions required of employees, guarantees state contributions and raises retirement ages for state workers. There are several suits challenging the constitutionality of the measure, which was signed by Gov. Pat Quinn in December 2013. The Illinois Constitution states contractual benefits of state workers “shall not be diminished or impaired.” “This is an important first step in our efforts to overturn

this unfair, unconstitutional law and to protect retirement security for working and retired Illinois families,” said Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan in a statement on behalf of worker coalition We Are One Illinois. Beliz ruled on a lawsuit filed by the Illinois State Employees Association Retirees and several other plaintiffs. In his official filing, Beliz said there was sufficient evidence those named in the suit would “suffer irreparable harm” if the injunction was not issued. Implementation statewide will be held until Beliz or a higher court decides on the constitutionality of the law. “Obviously, we are very pleased that the judge understood the situation that a lot of these retirees were in and their uncertainty of what was going to happen next,” said Donald Craven, the lawyer for the association.

Thanks for another wonderful school year It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to an end, but on June 8, we will graduate nearly 1,000 students from DuPage High School District 88. It has been another wonderful year filled with many accomplishments, and we know those successes are because of our knowledgeable and supportive Board of Education, our COMMUNITY dedicated and passionate VOICE staff, our engaged students Scott and our involved parents and Helton community members. It truly takes a team to build futures for the students of District 88, and I thank you for your partnership. Below are five highlights from the 2013-14 school year. 1. Preliminary numbers show about 90 percent of the class of 2014 at District 88’s high schools, Addison Trail and Willowbrook, has been accepted to a two- or four-year college or university. 2. More students than ever enrolled in Advanced Placement courses this year, which allow students to earn college credit while in high school. 3. So far this year, 68 student-athletes from District 88 have qualified for Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state competitions, and one student-athlete received All-American recognition. In the West Suburban Conference, District 88 has won six conference titles, and 41 student-athletes from District 88 have signed to play their sport at the collegiate level. 4. Our students and staff continue to give back to their communities. They raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society, hosted blood drives to benefit LifeSource and once again participated in the Park Pride Cleanup in Addison and the Salt Creek Cleanup in Addison and Villa Park. 5. We joined together with the county to educate students, parents and community members about the heroin epidemic in the county and state. We hosted a Student Leadership Symposium, where students from 23 schools from throughout DuPage County gathered to discuss how to combat this issue. We also hosted public symposiums at each school. Because of those successes, Addison Trail and Willowbrook have once again been recognized by The Washington Post as two of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” and ranked in the top 6 percent of U.S. public high schools for 2014. District 88 has been ranked in the challenge index for seven consecutive years, since 2008. The end of the school year is a wonderful time to acknowledge all you do for our students. Thank you for helping us accomplish our mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement.

I was at Lilacia Park this morning in Lombard, and a worker there was spraying the faded tulips (bloom was done) with Roundup (glyphosate). I asked why, and he said it helps them [helps restore color]. Is this really necessary? Do we have to have everything look perfect? Such a beautiful place seems natural, but then you learn they think they have to manipulate things with chemicals. Do we really need more chemicals in our ground, which eventually go into the waterways? Glyphosate has been linked to more than 20 adverse health effects, including birth defects, infertility and cancer.

No need for library renovation in Lemont I am at the Lemont library on a regular basis for various reasons and agree with others who have written to Sound Off. I love our library and what it offers. But there is absolutely no need for remodeling, additional meeting rooms, computers, etc. Even the funds already spent for analyzing the “needs” was not necessary. The governing bodies of Lemont need to make more frugal decisions with our tax money. If you’re “looking” for ways to spend tax money, it could be better spent elsewhere in our community. I don’t think there’s a need for examples.

On the Opinions page in the May 14 Downers Grove Suburban Life, James Eichmiller shares with us some feelings and findings of the District 58 Technology Program. He said student achievement approved as measured by the math testing. How do we know the improvement was caused by technology? Could good teaching have caused the gain? He then said collaboration, ownership, engagement, staff flexibility and choice also increased. Again, could good teaching have caused these improvements? I am not sure you can state that all of these gains are from a take-home technology program. I am not sure we can afford to give every student a device to use at school and at home. Our taxes are going up, we have pension obligations to meet and we need to show some type of fiscal restraint.

Lombard’s Got Talent! This new talent completion replaces the former Just Sing competition. Lombard’s Got Talent will take place on the 4th of July on the main stage from 3pm-5pm at the Taste of Lombard. There will be three categories: Singing, Dance and Comedy. Anyone that would like to participate in the competition must audition. Auditions will be held on Sunday, June 8th at Enchanted Castle in Lombard. Auditions will begin at 9:30am and everyone who would like to audition must pre-register as time slots will be assigned to everyone auditioning. Performance must be a minimum of 3 minutes, max is ive minutes. Song choice is up to you so choose wisely. Dance- must be 12 years of age and older. Routines must be 3-5 minutes long and you need to provide your own music on a CD clearly labeled with your name. Music on the CD should be the only music and should be the length of your routine. Participants may perform solo, in a duo, trio or in a group. Max number of people for a group is 7, no exceptions. Participants must sign a waiver. No acrobatics will be allowed in routines. Comedy- must be 18 years of age and older and be able to provide a valid photo ID. Must perform solo and material must be original. Three minutes will be given for monologues, no profanity or disrespecting the country will be allowed. Please note: Those that make it through to the competition on the 4th of July will be notiied on Wednesday, June 11th. A mandatory rules meeting and group photo will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at 7pm at the Lombard Jaycees Clubhouse.

Sushi House’s signature selections on a roll DOWNERS GROVE – Good sushi restaurants can be hard to find in the Midwest. It’s usually not a matter of technique, but freshness. Even the best restaurants can sometimes fall short because they don’t have access to high quality fish, obviously the key component in a dish that often consists of only raw protein, rice and seaweed. The Sushi House in downtown Downers Grove proves a worthy entry on the suburban sushi scene. Its interior hearkens very much to the classic sushi setting – serene design, occasional pieces of Japanese artwork on the walls, and the sushi chef station right at the center of the action. At a cursory glance, the menu is also fairly traditional – the typical, three- or four-ingredient basic roll, sashimi and nigiri on one side and the flashier rolls on the other. There also are a number of regular entrees, including a couple of intriguing bento box combinations. To experience the full gamut, our table ordered the lunch combination and one of the fancy rolls. The combo included a basic tuna roll and spicy salmon rolls, as well as a cup of miso soup. The tuna had good texture, but my preference was the salmon. It melted in your mouth, while a nice bite of cucumber added a refreshing crunch to the wrap. The spicy mayo was understated. Looking at the “signature rolls” part of the menu was overwhelming, but in the best possible way. I always feel a little intimidated by the depth of ingredient options at whatever sushi restaurant I am at – Sushi House’s 2011 Roll alone is topped with four different kinds of caviar. There always seems to be a hint of a dare contained in that half of the menu. As if the sushi place is saying, “You want to get your socks knocked off? Here’s the best we got. Try to not enjoy eating these rolls.”

Sushi House, nestled in downtown Downers Grove, offers a diverse menu of both basic and intricate sushi offerings, as well as several options for those who aren’t fans of raw fish.

Sushi House offers plenty of creative options, including the basic and delicious tuna roll. The Spicy Angel Roll was a delightful indulgence, marrying zesty fla- meaning Sushi House won that particular dare. vors with quality seafood. I decided to go with the Spicy Angel Roll. When it came to the table, I was appropriately impressed. When I put it in my mouth, I was giddy. The roll had it all – tempura shrimp, octopus, tuna, scallop and avocado. Inside was some of the spicy mayo I had wanted more of in the salmon roll, providing a creamy and lightly spicy base. Alongside the fish in the middle was a

small line of roe for a nice salty snap. On top was a sweet and smokey sauce and pickled jalapeño. All together, it came out hitting multiple levels of spiciness without overwhelming the seafood flavors. It was definitely the dish that drove me from contentedly full to stuffed, because I just needed to have those last two pieces. It completely elevated the meal from solid to very good,

Adding to the comfortable ambiance, the server was attentive without being pushy – stopping by to refill my water and take my order when I closed my menu. The restaurant also gets a special shout-out for having real pickled ginger, the spicy white version instead of the tame and tangy pinkish stuff most places put out. It’s a small thing, but makes a big difference. It also has a patio that looks amazingly appeal-

ing, and will only look better as the weather improves. All in all, Sushi House is a nice experience with good to very good food offerings. I would love to return and let the signature roll menu continue to bowl me over.

LOMBARD – Every team tries to peak at the end of the season and Glenbard East baseball might just be pulling that elusive feat off. The Rams won their final three DuPage Valley Conference series, taking two out of three against Naperville North, Lake Park and Wheaton Warrenville South to finish 9-12 in the DVC. After winning the first series of the season against West Aurora, the Rams went 1-7 in the next eight conference games. With the postseason right around the corner, Glenbard East is hoping to keep its recent roll going. “We’ve showed we can come back and battle,” senior pitcher Anthony Esterly said. “It’s always nice to get hot going into the playoffs. We just got to keep this intensity up.” Esterly pitched a shut out in the opening game of the series against Wheaton Warrenville South on Monday. He struck out seven and allowed just three hits in a 6-0 win. Tyler Behrendt, who was 2-for-2 with two walks on Monday, was the star of the day Tuesday. He blasted a three-run home run to tie the game in the fifth inning and was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 7-5 win against the Tigers. “He’s seeing the ball well, but it’s not just Tyler,” coach Joel Pelland said. “It’s been a bunch of guys that have come through with timely hits and sacrifices when we needed to have them. Just doing a good job of situational hitting and moving guys.” Wheaton Warrenville South won the series finale 5-2 in Lombard on Wednesday. The Tigers scored all five runs in the second inning and held off a late rally from the Rams. Despite Wednesday’s loss the Rams have received a con-

Diet trend offers healthy benefits One particularly healthful diet trend is the Mediterranean diet, so named after the tastes and habits of the people living around the Mediterranean Sea. Olive oil is the anchor of the Mediterranean diet. No other natural oil has as much monounsaturated fat. When drizzled on salads and vegetables or grilled fish, it adds a pleasing aroma and texture. But olive oil by itself is somewhat bland and is always accompanied by liberal amounts of salt. Yet the people of the Mediterranean, who enjoy all these foods, have the world’s best cardiovascular health. The diet is so healthy that the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute used it as a model in its famous DASH Study (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), which confirmed that the Mediterranean/DASH diet was healthier than the typical American diet and efectively reduced blood pressure. Americans who believe they need to follow a low-salt diet may hesitate to explore the Mediterranean diet.
