garten through eighth grade. For most of the students, it will be their artistic debut. “I’ve never been to something like this,” said Wilson, who will exhibit two drawings and a sculpture at the show. “I’m looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to my drawings and looking at other peo-

ple’s drawings and seeing what they created.” Paring down the 445 submissions was challenging for Tracy Vroman and her small team. A District 45 PTA member, Vroman spearheaded the inaugural show with help from two local fine artists, Paulina Jimenez and Wendee Goles, both of Villa Park. Together, the trio waded through the submissions, arranged to have the students matte their artwork, and have been staging Schafer School for today’s big show from 6 to 8 p.m. Vroman planned to make final preparations after school today. “We really tried to include as many pieces as we could,” Vroman said. “There were great pieces that we couldn’t [include] because of space and time con-

straints.” Artwork poured in from all of the district’s eight schools and grade levels in three categories: visual arts (drawings, paintings and collages), photography and sculptures. No one submitted anything for a fourth category, film, but Vroman predicts that might change in future years with the increased access to video-making tools such as iPhones and tablets. The Student Art Show takes the place of Reflections, a national PTA program that the district participated in for the last several years. Vroman recently had played a key role in organizing those events as well. This year’s show was a much bigger undertaking, Vroman said. She’s hoping to recruit more volunteers for the sequel

next spring. A survey will be available at the show for potential volunteers to express their interest. “It’s nice that this is all just local, but there have been a lot of hours and blood, sweat and tears being put into this,” said Vroman, who also serves on the District 45 Board of Education. The experience has more than just Vroman thinking about the future. Wilson has a full slate of projects planned for the summer break – portraits and nature drawings, mostly. She’s also considering focusing her studies on the arts. “I really, really enjoy art,” she said. “I want to do this later in life and not just have it be a hobby, but if that’s what happens, I’m OK with that.”

The work attempts to explain resurrection and life after death, according to the Jackson Middle School seventh-grader. “I was thinking even after tragedy and drama there may be good things that come out of it,” she said. 1 injured after chlorine leak at private facility By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – A small chemical leak that occurred Monday morning at a privately-owned water treatment plant in Lombard left one woman with minor injuries and closed traffic on Highland Avenue for about 90 minutes. A crew from the York Center Fire Protection District responded to a call involving a chlorine leak at about 10:30 a.m. at the Highland Hills Sanitary District, 566 E. 13th Place, according to York Center Deputy Chief Richard Sanborn. The leak was contained to a single room inside the facility, and a hazmat team was called to isolate and remove the leak, Sanborn said.

One worker at the facility sustained burning eyes and a sore throat from the leak, but declined medical treatment, according to Sanborn. Three other fire departments responded to the call, including the Lombard Fire Department, Sanborn said. Highland, near 13th Street, was closed for about 90 minutes as crews worked to secure the area. The sanitary district is operated by a private company, according to the DuPage County website.

LOMBARD – Armed with hammers, paint brushes, shovels, hoses, weed whackers and other landscaping tools, members of Lombard’s Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday partnered with DuPage Habitat for Humanity for the organization’s restoration program, A Brush with Kindness. Ten volunteers from the church, including residents of Lombard, Villa Park and Glen Ellyn, worked on home repairs, painting and minor landscaping at a three-family townhome building located on Prairie Green Court in unincorporated DuPage County near Glen Ellyn. The home was built last year by DuPage Habitat on the same block as a similar home constructed through

another partnership between the church and the nonprofit. “It went great,” Trinity Lutheran media liaison Lori Solyom said. “Everybody had a great time and worked hard.” Longtime Trinity members Lois and Jose Seijo, both involved with Habitat for Humanity, had formerly shared their personal experiences with fellow church members during a Sunday adult Bible class, and the partnership began from there. “Trinity had been seeking more ways to get involved in the community, and they spoke with such passion and excitement,” Solyom explained. “It seemed like a really good fit.” Along with the manual labor, the church is committed to donating money to Habitat

Work needed to fix VA hospital system Over the past several weeks, disturbing reports have emerged of widespread mismanagement at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which resulted in shockingly poor treatment of our veterans at facilities across the country, including at Chicagoland’s own Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital. News of secret, off-thebook waiting lists for vetCOMMUNITY erans seeking treatment in VOICE Phoenix used by VA officials Peter in order to artificially lower Roskam reported wait times for care clearly are just the tip of the iceberg. The VA scandal came into sharp focus this past week when the VA Inspector General confirmed suspicions of “systemic” delayed medical care and wait list fraud throughout the VA health system. Manipulating waiting lists enabled hospitals to circumvent the VA mandate where patients receive care within 14 days of submitting a request, which in turn yielded successful performance reviews and millions of dollars in bonuses for VA management officials. The IG’s report also found veterans at the Phoenix VA experienced average wait times of 114 days for primary care – nearly five times longer than what was officially reported – and 1,700 veterans were kept off waiting lists all together. Since the scandal broke, the VA reportedly has expanded its investigation from 10 to 42 medical facilities nationwide. While the Department is not disclosing which facilities are under investigation, I hope and expect they will look into allegations of secret waiting lists and improper delays at Hines VA Hospital, as well as claims veterans received informational briefings and in-group general consultations instead of necessary medical care, again a concerted effort to cook the books instead of meeting the needs of veterans. Recently, the House passed the VA Management Accountability Act to give Department leaders every possible tool to improve management and hold their team responsible for delivering high-quality care to our nation’s veterans or else face termination. This legislation gives the VA secretary the legal authority to demote or fire senior department executives who are not fulfilling their responsibilities. The Senate should immediately take up this bill so we can send it to the president without delay. Criticism of judge is sexist next mass was letting out and she still was there begging for money. I think the church really should not allow this and also perhaps offer support to the individual, who may need it. Many of us are unemployed and have been for years and are not collecting any substances and barely making ends meet. I don’t think, however, we should resort to going out and begging for money from people in parking lots. I’m not even sure sometimes these are legitimate, or Begging in church parking perhaps someone’s husband is lot should not be allowed making them do this. After church Sunday at Holy Trinity in Westmont, there was Potholes in Westmont should be fixed a lady begging for money with Hey, Westmont, winter’s over. a sign from all the cars in the What do you say we get some of parking lot as they exited. And then, when I did my chores and these potholes fixed, especially on 59th Street? was heading back home, the In this week’s Sound Off, a contributor criticized Judge Ann Finley Collin’s decision to release a man arrested for breaking into a Riverside home. I know nothing about the incident and have no opinion on the judge’s decision. However, the contributor suggested “Maybe judge Collins should be at home making a cake or cleaning the toilet.” If the judge was a man, would the same suggestion have been made?

IN THE NON-BLINKING OF AN EYE Those spending extended periods of time squinting at their computer screens run a greater risk of developing “dry eye.” Research shows that even just a slight amount of squinting reduces blinking rates by half (from fifteen blinks per minute to seven and a half). More squinting while looking at the computer screen results in even less blinking, which leads to more pronounced sensations of burning eyes, dryness, and irritation. These symptoms are the result of less lubrication being spread over the surface of the eye. Normally, blinking eyelids spread tears that remove irritants from the cornea’s surface. Computer-specific eyeglasses with prescriptions calculated for computer use can reduce computer-screen squinting and related discomfort. Tinted lenses may also prove to be helpful. Dry eye is common, especially in women over the age of 40. Though there is no cure for dry eyes, there are a number of steps that can be taken to treat them. You should discuss treatment options with an eye care specialist. For more information, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. Experience, commitment to technology, and a genuine concern for patient welfare enable all of our doctors and our highly qualified staff to work together as a team to consistently deliver quality, affordable eye care. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Because the distance at which you look at a computer screen is not the same at which you read a book or magazine, reading glasses may not provide adequate vision correction for computer work.

will follow after 100 days. “They both know each other and plan on being in touch throughout the school year,” Wozniak said. Cull worked as superintendent of Itasca School District 10 from 2001 to 2008, before retiring. Since his retirement, he has served as interim superintendent in various school districts, including communities in Skokie, Winnetka and Lincolnwood. In District 10, Cull also worked as business manager and personnel director. Wernet was formerly superintendent of Lisle Community Unit School District 202. Prior to that, she was superintendent for Berwyn South School District 100, director of teaching and learning at Palos School District 118, principal and assistant principal at Palos South Middle School and held several positions at Evergreen Park School District 124. Blanche will retire June 30 after a decade leading District 44. His resignation was accepted by the school board in January. The Iowa native served 30 years as a principal, special education director and superintendent in Davenport Community School District before coming to District 44. “I just decided the time was right – you have to know when that is,” Blanche said in an interview with Suburban Life earlier this year. “I’ve enjoyed the stability, but it’s time to move on.” The school board will begin its search for a full-time superintendent this summer, Wozniak said, adding that the time frame of the search depends on the candidate pool. Lombard Elementary School District 44 is made up of seven schools and has about 3,100 students from kindergarten to eighth grade

County Clerk’s Office issues gay marriage licenses for first time By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com A celebratory mood filled the DuPage County Clerk’s office Monday morning as samesex couples received marriage licenses for the first time. “It’s a great day in Illinois,” said Barb McMillan of Roselle. “Now we just have to get the rest of the country on board.” McMillan and her wife, Roseann Szalkowski, both of Roselle, know the clerk’s office and its employees well. The couple of 14 years visited every Valentine’s Day beginning in 2004 with a gift of chocolates for the employees and a request for a marriage license. Every year, they would leave empty-handed. They ended the tradition in 2011 when civil unions for same-sex couples became legal in Illinois. On Monday, they brought chocolates for the office one last time and had their civil union converted to a marriage license. Illinois’ law allowing gay marriage went into effect Sunday, and the first day couple’s could receive their licenses in DuPage County was Monday morning. McMillan, 63, and Szalkowski, 53, were joined by two other couples when the clerk’s office doors opened at 8 a.m., along with a gaggle of reporters and members of PFLAG, a gay and lesbian support organization that presented roses to the couples. McMillan and Szalkowski were the first in line in 2011 for a civil union, and on Monday, only one couple arrived before they did – Dan McGuire, 67, and David Mancini-Conway, 49, of Naperville. “It kind of puts us on a level playing field,” Mancini-Conway said. “We pay taxes like everybody else. I’m so excited I probably won’t remember anything about this.” McGuire said the marriage license provides a feeling of satisfaction and validation. But there also are the practical benefits of marriage – the cou-

“Twenty-eight years ago, when we first committed to each other, I said to [Jevelyn], ‘Someday we’re going to be legally married.’ And here we are.” Catherine Verbic Naperville resident ple planned to visit their tax attorney and finally enjoy the rewards of joint income-tax filing. Like the other couples in the office, McGuire and Mancini-Conway received a civil union in 2011 and had it converted Monday to a marriage license, something they both said they didn’t expect to ever happen in Illinois. “All that stuff that people take for granted, we can have now,” Mancini-Conway said. The third couple to arrive early Monday, Catherine and Jevelyn Verbic of Naperville, were the first to actually receive and sign their license. “Twenty-eight years ago, when we first committed to each other, I said to her, ‘Someday we’re going to be legally married,’” Catherine, 54, said. “And here we are.” Jevelyn, 55, said she wasn’t so confident the law would ever change. “It feels good to be able to say that we’re married, and that we can enjoy the same opportunities that everybody else does,” she said. “And I view it as a blessing. I mean, I did not think it would happen in our day. And that shows us that things can change, and people’s ideas about what’s right or wrong, good or bad, can change.” As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, the office provided 22 marriage licenses to couples who previously had civil unions and seven marriage licenses to couples who had not had civil unions.

Miles and Miles of Sales

Continued from page 6 to the nonprofit to help fund the school’s new football stadium, Seago said. The club was looking to hold a fundraising concert when the group spoke with William and James O’Brien, owners of the Lombard-based Flesk Brewing Company. With craft beer on the rise, the brothers encouraged the boosters to host the festival, and put them in touch with Lou Dog Events. The festival is perfect for craft beer aficionados, but also provides an opportunity for individuals unfamiliar with the industry to try a variety of beers

without spending a fortune, Seago said. “A fest like this is great for those new to craft beer to experience what it is all about,” he said. The lineup of brewers contains a mix of the “big guys,” such as Bells, Abita, Lagunitas and Goose Island, as well as smaller, local brewers, such as Two Brothers, Finch’s, Argus and Flesk, Seago said. Denise Powell, general manager of Beer House, 322 Yorktown Shopping Center, said the business, one of the festival’s main sponsors, is excited. “We’re really big supporters of the local craft beers,” Powell said. “We want to do whatever we can to partner up with them.”

Beer House opened July 2013 at Yorktown. Hosting the festival in Lilacia Park, just steps from downtown Lombard and the Lombard Metra Station, is perfect for local businesses and festival-goers who live outside the village, Seago said, adding that a good percentage of the tickets sold are purchased by nonresidents. “It makes it really convenient for people,” Seago said. Tickets are going fast and organizers encourage those who plan to attend to purchase theirs quickly. “This is going to be a great festival and the people of Lombard should be excited to have it in their backyard,” Seago said.

Sweet & Savory hits the spot in Westmont WESTMONT – Buddy Holly’s older lookalike takes his place at the microphone, ukulele in hand, the waiter in a Frank Zappa T-shirt greets us with a smile, and the woman next to me, also with a ukulele, says, “I bet this isn’t what you were expecting for a first date.” It was The Sweet & Savory Spot, and the name itself embodies the restaurant in both atmosphere and selection. Sweet, delightful, quaint, and what was once the best kept secret in Westmont obviously has become a go-to favorite in the bustling downtown area along Cass Avenue. A window storefront allowed an abundance of light to shine through the dining area on one of the first days people could actually call summer-like. Flowers decorating the tables were surrounded by guests’ mason jars of craft beer and lemonade, all set under a “Life is Sweet” sign. Meanwhile, our Buddy Holly friend queued up the first song. “We’re going to kick it off how we always do with ‘Jambalaya,’” he said, and much like the sunny light from outside, the sweet sounds of summer allowed us a dream escape to a private beach in Hawaii. But my stomach was urging me to move my focus from the guest entertainment to the menu – one entire page highlighted craft beer. As for food, almost every kind of sandwich was listed, along with appealing salads and comfort foods every guest could savor. Those who know me know I’m a sucker for any kind of dip. In fact, after I retire from journalism, I have a plan to co-own my own full-service restaurant that serves craft beer, and then just assorted dips with finger food. It’s called “Sips & Dips.” I can’t take credit for that – it was all my companion’s idea. Don’t steal it. So my eye immediately caught the grilled chicken sandwich topped with guaca-

The Sweet & Savory Spot has turned into a popular dining destination in downtown Westmont.

The grilled chicken sandwich was garnished with lettuce, tomato, onion and guacamole, and paired with a generous side of macaroni and cheese. For a twist on a classic French favorite, the Croque Madame, served of food coming out to guests with a side salad, features a grilled Parker House roll, ham, Swiss, Mor- consistently kept the staff nay sauce, mustard and egg. busy, but at no time did I see a mole that was a perfect accompaniment to “Jambalaya” and the atmosphere the ukulele circle conjured. My companion went with the Croque Madame, which I learned later that evening was a French ham and cheese sandwich. I had a bite and honestly can say I’ll never bypass a French take on ham and cheese, whose embellishments such as Mornay sauce and egg boost it up several

notches. Dessert was classic and sweet, serving up an array of cupcakes, brownies and pie. In fact, it was so good, it gave me inspiration for a new retirement/restaurant plan. It’s still a full-service restaurant, but now it only serves craft beer and pies. I call it “Pies & Pints.” That was my idea, so don’t steal it. Cupcakes and full plates

waiter who wasn’t smiling or asking patrons if they needed anything else. It wasn’t just the ukulele group I could tell was having a good time, but all the guests, who were arriving by the minute. When we first got there around the beginning of dinnertime, you were free to select a table. After five minutes, the entry door rarely stayed shut as a steady stream poured in. It was hypnotic to watch a

full room of people bob their heads to the musical tunes – and just for a little while, time slowed down to a point of delight on Cass Avenue. Whether accompanied by ukuleles or not, The Sweet & Savory Spot has made me a regular customer.

“I was hoping to go out in fourth. That was probably the ideal spot. I just wasn’t able to hang with the early pace. They went out at 55 seconds, which put me at about 57 [seconds] maybe. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Peters said. “They’ve got a great coach and a great group of guys. It’s a great program.”

Bloemke represents Willowbrook Willowbrook’s lone state qualifier, Jake Bloemke, ran in the 400-meter dash and placed 26th. The senior crossed the finish line in 51.30 seconds and missed out on making the finals by a little over one second.

Glenbard East’s Jack Peters competes in the finals of the 800-meter run at the Class 3A state meet on Saturday. Peters earned his second career state medal by placing eighth in the race.

CHARLESTON – The opening lap of the Class 3A 800-meter run Saturday didn’t go exactly as planned for Jack Peters. But when the dust settled, the Glenbard East senior still walked away from the IHSA event with an all-state medal after finishing in seventh place at Eastern Illinois University. “I was hoping to go out in fourth,” Peters said. “That was probably the ideal spot. I just wasn’t able to hang with the early pace. They went out at 55 seconds which put me at about 57 [seconds] maybe. That left a bit too much work to do on the second lap. “But it was still a good race and props to those guys, they ran some really good times considering the heat.” Peters crossed the line with a clocking of 1:55.34, continuing his trend of posting faster times in the postseason. He ran a 1:56.60 in a preliminary state race May 30 and recorded a 1:57.70 at the Lake Park sectional the week before state. “It’s pretty special,” said Peters, when asked about standing on the awards podium. “I was hoping for something a little higher, but seventh in the state is still something to be proud of. I’m happy with it.” A year ago, Peters placed sixth in the same event at state. “It’s a really cool experience [at state],” he said. “The stands are packed and it’s really awesome that fans make it out to support everyone.” Next up for the senior is a collegiate career at Loyola.

IC Catholic freshman Rowell off to fast start By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Jordan Rowell had quite the whirlwind athletic year at IC Catholic, making major contributions to the varsity in three sports as a freshman. Earlier this school year Rowell started at running back for the varsity football team and was a regular off the bench for the varsity basketball team. On Saturday, he capped off an impressive nine months by notching all-state status in a trio of events at the IHSA Class 1A track meet at Eastern Illinois University. That included a third-place showing in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.29 seconds despite tweaking his hip during the race. “Coming around the curve, I felt a little pop in my right hip,” said Rowell, who was attending to Glenn Westlake Middle School in Lombard a year ago. “But I knew I had to keep going, that race really meant a lot to me. I ended up passing two guys to finish third.” Earlier in the day, he placed sixth in the 100 after crossing the line in 11.05. “I have to get faster,” he said after the 100. “I now know where I stand and I have years to grow. I’m only a freshman. I could have gotten out of the blocks better but I know what I

Frontzak finds comfort zone, leads Montini to regional By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Sean Frontzak is always relaxed on the mound and found his comfort zone in Saturday’s regional final. The Montini junior limited Glenbard South to just four hits and one run en Sean route to a re- Frontzak gional title. The Broncos won 3-1 after taking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Frontzak retired the last 13 batters he faced. He struck

out six in the game and didn’t walk anyone. “The change started to work toward the end,” Frontzak said. “I started striking more people out. The defense was working.” Montini advanced to play Riverside Brookfield on Thursday in a rematch of last year’s regional final. It was the Broncos’ first regional title

since 2010. The pressure of a big game that was close the whole way didn’t bother Frontzak, who seems to keep the same demeanor no matter the situation. “You go out and talk to him on the mound and it’s like ‘Wake up! Are you awake?’ ” coach Bob Landi said. “He’s got a real nice demeanor as a

pitcher. Nothing seems to rattle him. He’s pitched some big games for us this year and he’s gotten beat by some very, very good teams. If you watch him in the middle of a game you wouldn’t know if he was winning or losing. His demeanor is the same.” While Frontzak was dealing, the Montini offense was doing whatever possible to scrape runs across. Pat Hennessy had an RBI single in the second, but the Raiders tied the game in the top of the third. The Broncos broke the deadlock in the fifth when an Eddie Bava fielder’s choice resulted in two RBIs in a strange play.

None of that bothered Frontzak, who kept dealing. “He had good stuff,” Landi said. “He was hitting his spots well. His change up was really good today. “He was throwing a devastating change up that caught them a couple times off guard.” Frontzak is a part of a three-man rotation for Montini, which includes his older brother Sean Frontzak and Tyler Quick. All three entered the sectional with ERAs under two. “In my time at Montini, which is the last six years, we’ve never had three pitchers like this,” Landi said.

Consumer Tips Finding balance: creating functional family living spaces

choosing Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) free products - because they are very eco- and child-friendly. These paints don’t emit any toxic fumes and are completely odorless making it possible to literally paint a bedroom and have the kids sleep in it that same evening. “It also allows for flexibility of changing things around without huge costs, especially when transitioning from a nursery to a preschooler to a preteen, etc,” shares Nash.

Keeping peace in shared spaces

(BPT) - Let’s face it - life is busy. And one of the byproducts of a busy life is a cluttered house. With piles of paper coming home from school and toys creating obstacle courses in the family room, parents may wonder how they’ll ever take back control of the house. A few experts share their ideas for doing just that.

Family-friendly furniture

Marissa Alexander, academic director at The Art Institutes International Minnesota advises families to think toward the future when choosing furniture items. “Durability, easy maintenance and flexibility of the fabric are essential,” she says. Children will grow up quickly so choosing materials that meet the famiMaking the most of small spaces ly’s needs now and in the future is highly advisable. Lisa Godsey, a registered interior designer for Both Alexander and Godsey suggest nylon upholnearly 20 years and an instructor at The Illinois Institute stery and durable, low-sheen furniture finishes, fiber of Art - Chicago, recommends that people start looking seal textiles and individual lounge chairs sharing an at interior spaces in a new way - up. It’s hard enough to convince siblings to share a tablet; what happens when they have to share closet space? “Sharing a closet is best accomplished when it is clear who controls which space,” asserts Godsey. She recommends defining areas based on age - for example, placing an older child’s clothing on the top level of a double-hung closet. The area can be accessed via a stepstool - out of a younger sibling’s reach. Another option is to hang two bars extending into the depth of the closet, rather than one utilizing the width of the closet. “Two bars on each side, in double-hung fashion, gives each child four feet of hanging space,” she says. And it may help to keep the peace when it’s time to choose an outfit.

A time and place for individual style While parents show off their acquired style through furniture choices, artwork and decor, children’s style can be a bit more - changeable. Alexander suggests that parents provide children with flexible display systems that show off their creativity in a simple, neat and contained package. “Magnetic paint gives children direct control over what they display, allowing them to change displays whenever they want. A large frame with a plexi shield is a lightweight way to display a variety of flat work like children’s custom artwork.” Creating a functional living space - where parents and children coexist harmoniously - doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By choosing durable but stylish furniture, practical storage solutions, and allowing everyone the chance to express their style in defined places, your home can become a haven for all ages.

36 3) make a tire swing

Get moving!

If you don’t have a playground nearby, don’t fret – just use your imagination. Get an adult to help you attach an old tire to a sturdy tree branch with a rope and make a swing. Or recycle some wood to build a treehouse. Whatever it is, be safe while you’re doing these kinds of projects, and let the sky be the limit.

There are many ways to have fun in the great outdoors this summer, and they don’t all have to be organized sports. Sure, it’s fun to play a game of soccer or baseball with your friends, but if you don’t have enough people to ield a team, don’t let it stop you from enjoying the summer sunshine and fresh air. Here are ive classic ways to get outdoors this summer.

4) Draw with chalk You can play games like hopscotch. You can send secret, coded messages to your neighbors. You can practice your drawing and art skills. Or, you can simply write your name. However you choose to use it, sidewalk chalk is a good way to graiti your driveway and not have it be permanent.

5) play a classic game in the yard Tag, hide and go seek, capture the flag – when all else fails in the summer, grab some pals and pull out one of these classics.

1) Climb a tree, or the monkey bars Your parents most likely climbed trees when they were kids, and your grandparents probably did, too. There’s a good reason – it’s fun, and just a little bit dangerous. OK, don’t climb a really big tree that will scare your neighbors when they see you up there, but climb one that looks relatively safe and check with your parents before you scamper up there. Or go climb the monkey bars at the park instead!

2) Go swimming

My summer favori tes

What better way to cool of from the scorching summer sun than a quick dip in the pool? Go to a public pool, beach or park with a lifeguard, and jump on in! If you don’t know how to swim, sign up for lessons with your local park district – and don’t forget the sunscreen.

AUTO BITS

Lincoln and Cadillac designer one and the same Q: I worked for an Oldsmobile dealer in the early 1950s and graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich. I had a Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering degree from Syracuse University, but liked working with autos. I later joined General Electric to finish out a 35-year career with them. I have a suggestion for another article for you. I assume that you are aware of Henry Leland, as he designed and built the first Cadillacs. General Motors then picked the make up, probably by Billy Durant, and is still producing them. Henry Leland left GM and designed a new car and manufactured it for a few years. That was the Lincoln. His company went bust again and Ford Motor Co. picked it up and it was put under the direction of Edsel Ford. They, too, are still being produced. It is amazing that the same man designed both luxury competing cars. I doubt if very many people know this including the respective make dealers. I enjoy studying the history of the automobile and the timely developments. – George Dieffenbacher, email from New York A: George, thank you very much. Yes, I’ve heard of Leland, as he was one of the original and best designers and engineers of his era. He was born in 1843 and passed on in 1932. Leland’s original Cadillac brand was indeed pur-

chased by General Motors in 1909 for a reported $5.5 million. However, it was GM boss Alfred P. Sloan who oversaw the purchase. As for William “Billy” Durant, he indeed did have much to do with Leland’s future. After a disagreement between Leland and Durant over Cadillac not producing war engines for WWI

as requested by the government, Leland actually lost his position. Being that Durant was against any type of war and a strict pacifist, Leland quit his job at GM to pursue building those aircraft engines. Leland quickly formed his new company with his son Wilfred in 1917. As you mention in your letter, the new company was called Lincoln and named after Leland’s hero, President Lincoln. After acquiring a $10 million loan to build the engines, Leland and Lincoln’s original cash flow came from assembling the V-12 Liberty aircraft engines GM refused to build

and used Henry Ford’s engine cylinders to do so. Following the war, Leland re-tooled his aircraft engine factory to manufacture the luxury car we know today, the Lincoln in late 1919 and early 1920. After running into money woes, Ford purchased the now insolvent Lincoln Motor Company in 1922. On June 10, 1922, Ford’s Ernest Liebold arrived at Lincoln to ask for the resignation of Leland’s son, Wilfred. When it became clear that Liebold had the backing of Henry Ford, Henry Leland resigned as well. In 1923, Edsel Ford took over the marquee. Today, the Lincoln is still

one of the world’s most respected luxury brands, and I’m glad you guided us down memory lane. In ending, the modernday Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chevy HHR (High Heritage Roof ) were designed by the same artist. namely Bryan Nesbitt, who still works for GM. But that’s another day. Thanks again for your letter. Greg Zyla writes weekly for GateHouse Media and More Content Now. He welcomes reader questions on old cars, auto nostalgia or auto racing at 116 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 or at greg@gregzyla.com.

Locations can be quick to offer discounted services to capitalize on valueseekers. How can a consumer be sure he or she is getting a quality motor oil and filter as part of the deal? “I can’t stress how important it is to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to motor oil changes and to understand that there is a big difference between a value and just a cheaper deal,” says automotive expert Lauren Fix, the “Car Coach.” Motor Oil Matters (MOM) and Fix recommend consumers arm themselves to help make informed decisions about motor oil: ! The bottom line: Follow the oil change recommendations in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Pay close attention to the oil life monitor if a vehicle has it. When the monitor says it’s time for a change, it’s time. ! Your service provider should be happy to supply you with the brand, viscosity grade and performance level of the oil they use before it is poured into your vehicle. Drive away from locations that don’t know or won’t confirm in writing what they’re pouring into your vehicle. ! Any motor oil poured into a vehicle should meet the level of performance recommended by the vehicle manufacturer in the owner’s manual.
