SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – Families took advantage of nice weather and free swimming Tuesday evening when the Lombard Police Department hosted its fourth annual National Night Out at Paradise Bay Water Park. cerns mirrored the primary impetus for station renovations, said Carl Goldsmith, Lombard’s public works director. Until the underpass is completed, pedestrians will continue to cross at track level while moving between the north and south platforms. “The goal of this project was to eliminate this crossing to eliminate the probability of pedestrian [vs.] train incidents,” Goldsmith said. In addition to the tunnel, renovations will include new retaining walls, ramps that
adhere to the Americans With Disabilities Act, stairways, platform shelters, canopies over inbound and outbound platforms, and landscaping.
Accessibility issues Construction this week included removal of the north side ramp and stairs and construction of temporary stairs. The Metra schedule will not change and commuters will have station access throughout the entire process, which is expected to last about 10 months. Handicap accessibility,
however, will be affected for the duration of the project. The handicap parking stalls will remain, but starting this week, the north side of the station will be inaccessible to handicap users. Goldsmith said once the south side ramp is demolished in about a month, there will be no handicap accessibility. Riders with disabilities will be directed to use the Glen Ellyn or Villa Park Metra stations, Goldsmith said. A short stretch of McGuire Drive, just south of Shannon’s Deli, will be closed for the duration of the project. That area marks the location for the planned tunnel. Cars still will

LOMBARD – Sounds of construction joined the typical train noise at the Lombard Metra station late this week as commuters experienced the start of a $9.7 million renovation project that will feature a pedestrian underpass. While concerns about station accessibility and other inconveniences loom over the project, there also is a measure of relief that work has finally begun. “It’s about time,” Lombard resident Annette Neibel said before boarding an early morning train Aug. 1, a few days ahead of the start of construction. “I’m tired of seeing people running across the tracks all the time.” Neibel takes the train to downtown Chicago three times a week for work. On that morning, she had her 9-yearold daughter, Audrey, tagging along. “And it’s good for kids because they’re not going to be able to cross the tracks – they’ll have to go underneath,” she said. Man gets 22 years for attempted murder in Lombard stabbing SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
Be the first to know The Chicago man found guilty of repeatedly stabbing his former girlfriend with a steak knife inside a Lombard condo unit was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison, according to a news re- Demetrice lease from the Tompkins DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Demetrice Tompkins, 49, 2341 E. 73rd St., Chicago, was convicted June 5 of attempted first-degree murder, armed violence and domestic battery. The attack took place on Dec. 12, 2011 in Tompkins’ brother’s condo unit in the 2200 block of South Stewart Avenue in Lombard. The woman, who survived the attack, suffered seven stab wounds to the chest and abdomen. The victim was the mother of Tompkins’ two sons.
Be the first to read about news in your area by signing up for our breaking news text alerts at shawurl.com/texts. Tompkins, who reportedly had an on-and-off relationship with the victim, had been out drinking before he confronted her in the bathroom of his brother’s condo. The victim had a condo unit in the same complex. Tompkins was arrested minutes after the attack in the victim’s condo. Tompkins originally was scheduled to be sentenced July 2, but the public defender, instead, filed a motion for a new trial, claiming that prosecutors did not prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Tompkins will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

‘Perfect storm’ creates ideal market By DAVID GOOD dgood@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – This is the type of summer storm homeowners and homebuyers both can appreciate. Overall, it’s still a seller’s market because there are more buyers than homes to choose from, which drives up demand and sale prices, said Doug MacArtney, managing broker for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Lombard branch. Buyers, however, still have plenty of incentive to act, MacArtney said. “It’s like the perfect storm we’ve all been waiting for for years,” he said. “For buyers, if you buy now, in five years,
your property is probably going to be worth more – it’s a pretty safe bet. And interest rates are still low.” The number of homes sold in Lombard in June was down slightly (53 to 48) from June of 2013 but did see a bounce up from the 41 homes sold in May of this year, according to data provided by Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. MacArtney said the drop in home sales was a reflection of lower inventory to start the year, but an increase of homes on the market in the last several months could help satisfy the buyer demand and boost the number of homes sold in the near future. “We’re anticipating a more vibrant sales market this sum-
mer because of the increase in inventory,” he said. Lombard home prices were up 10 percent this June over June 2013. The median sale price went from $225,000 last June to $247,700 in 2014, according to the Realtors data. While property values could be on the rise, MacArtney said the jump in sales prices this June compared to last is more an indication that more high-end homes were sold. MacArtney did not discount the possibility that home values have risen and emphasized that the current demand for homes makes 2014 a good year to sell. “If you’ve been contemplating a sale, now may be great time to do so,” he said.

Fighting trafficking in the foster care system For too many children in the foster care system, their lives have been filled with instability, abuse, and neglect. Often these children are passed from home to home not knowing how long they will stay in one place or who they can trust. The psychological toll of such an environment makes it all too easy for human trafficking rings to target vulnerable foster care COMMUNITY youth and force them into VOICE what can only be described as Peter modern day slavery. That is why lawmakers, community Roskam leaders and law enforcement agencies are joining forces to prevent the estimated 104,000 children in foster care from becoming victims of physical and psychological abuse. Last month, I joined my colleagues in passing the bipartisan Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act, which makes critical reforms to our foster care laws, working to identify those most vulnerable to predators and take concrete steps to protect these children from abuse. First, the bill increases the reporting requirements for foster parents and child welfare agencies, encouraging them to identify at-risk youth and develop new ways to ensure better information is provided to caseworkers assigned to these children. Our legislation also works to address current foster care policies that can make it difficult for children to participate in sports, sleep over at a friend’s house, obtain a driver’s license, or get a part-time job – all common rites of passage for kids making the transition into adulthood. Although well-intentioned, in some cases these strict rules can lead to a child becoming isolated and separated from family and friends, making them more vulnerable to victimization. The Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act offers financial support and incentives for the adoption of foster children to families who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Providing these children more normalcy through social development activities and increasing their chance of adoption into a permanent family is key to not only protecting them from predators but setting up foster care children for long-term success. Through partnerships at the federal, state and local level, we can go after the criminals who commit this horrible crime, and protect the most vulnerable members of our society. These reforms are a huge step forward, and I will continue to press forward to stamp out the scourge of human trafficking in our communities.

SOUND OFF
Ticket loud motorcycles In answer to [a Sound Off item about] noisy motorcycles [in last week’s papers]: Is it also illegal to modify the exhaust on cars, making them more noisy than when they came from the factory? Motorcycles, cars, trucks, vans, SUVs – if it’s illegal, it’s illegal. Lemont police, instead of just driving around burning gas, enforce the law. Do your job. Stop them. Ticket them. End the noise pollution. Thank you very much.
La Grange apartments bring transients Village of La Grange, it’s your last chance to get things right regarding those apartments going up at Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. Apartments bring transients. The city of Chicago’s looking to get rid of people. They come, they go from year-to-year. There’s going to be Section 8. The children are perpetually behind in school because they’re moving year-after-year and missing class. That area was known for crime; transient people bring crime to apartments. At the very least, to make these condos – this quoting about the income level from 50 grand and up – that’s window dressing to get you to agree to it. And the planning commission took it

hook, line and sinker. Please, La Grange, think about this. You’ll rue this day if you look back and let this go as proposed.
Don’t run over road kill Anybody who runs over road kill in daylight, should have their license suspended for a month and made to clean up all the road kill, especially skunks. It’s obvious people are not paying attention as they’re driving. And with the skunks, if you hit that scent pack, they’re gonna smell.
Some residents should live in a dome I’m responding to the letter writer about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. They might wanna put a dome over their house. Because I have seen hundreds of squirrels, skunks, raccoons, possums, birds, rabbits and cats, to name a few, in people’s yards. Do they really think not one of those mammals pee in their yards? A dome would be good. And while we’re at it, while you’re out walking yourself, watch out for things coming out of trees because squirrels, skunks, raccoons and birds all live in trees. And you never know what will come out of them. So, I just thought I’d mention that, get a dome.

I’m calling about more green space in La Grange at Ashland and Harris avenues. There is a lot that used to be a funeral home that’s been empty for more than eight years. It’s now being zoned to possibly be a condominium complex within that neighborhood. There are numerous large condo buildings and apartment buildings, and we don’t need that. What we need in La Grange is green space. It could be a community garden. It could be a lovely, enhancing part of the village, as opposed to more buildings, especially when that large apartment complex is going to be built not too far away on the corner of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. So, let’s go for more green space in La Grange and petition the village to buy that lot and turn it into green space for the residents of La Grange. Thank you.

Nybo replaces Dillard’s seat in state Senate LOMBARD – Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, took the oath of office to replace Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale in the Illinois Senate’s 24th District on Wednesday in Lombard. “I’m so happy and so proud that Chris Nybo will be my senator in Springfield,” Dillard said. A group of Illinois elected officials, including state Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno, joined Nybo supporters at the Sunken Garden Memo-

She then welcomed Nybo, who once helped with one of her campaigns, ringing doorbells, for the state Senate. “[Nybo] is a guy who has had a long commitment to public service,” Radogno said. DuPage GOP Chairwoman Darlene Ruscitti and Lyons Township GOP committeeman James Falvey convened a committee, which appointed Nybo to be sworn in and fulfill the term. The overwhelming majority of the district is in DuPage County with a few precincts in Western Springs that define the makeup of the nominating committee. Ruscitti, who represents more than 95 percent of the GOP weighted vote in the district, said in a news release she nominated Nybo because voters had already chosen him in the March primary. After DuPage County Circuit Judge Brian McKillip swore in Nybo, the senator thanked supporters and family. His wife, Faye, as well as their children, Connor, Olivia and Allison, joined Nybo while he spoke about his new job.

He said that too many businesses and people in the state want to say, “I quit,” but Nybo promised not to give up on Illinois. Nybo will face Suzanne Glowiak of Western Springs in the November general election for the same Senate seat. “I will work as hard as I can to get our state back on the right track with the right priorities that will allow us to create jobs, restore fiscal health, and become the kind of state that we deserve to be,” Nybo said.

Pat Wargowski, Branch Sales Manager of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services/Koenig Rubloff in Elmhurst is announcing the top producer in both listing and sales for both the months of May, and June, 2014. Congratulations go to real estate broker associate Diane Karpman for the exceptional total number of 22 transactions! Diane holds the Silver Achievement Award for 2013, as well as the distinguished honor of the “Most Units Award – Individual” for the Elmhurst office. With over 26 years of experience, Diane recently shared some advice she received early in her career. “A seasoned realtor once told me to always be ‘real-estate-ready’ because you never know what opportunity will present itself the next time your telephone rings,” she smiled. “Desire, dedication and determination are part of my Daily Bread,” is her motto. Diane implements that philosophy with her clients; and it is the Diane Karpman heart of her real estate work. Diane’s years of real estate experience allow her to understand the requirements of residential and investment property buyers and sellers. She understands the needs and the questions in the minds of renters, first-time buyers, up-sizers and down-sizers; and, the special needs of buyers interested in multi-generational living. And to that particular end, she applies those unique skills and experiences to her specialty designation as a Certified Senior Specialist. She is also a Certified Negotiation Consultant with the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Her clients are grateful for her creative energy and perseverance. Current client, Mike Mallany of Elmhurst says, “I can’t believe the amount of effort she has put into the sale of our home. Diane really stays on top of things! She has worked tirelessly to prepare our family for the sale of this home; and the level of involvement, her eye for detail, her knowledge and her commitment are really extraordinary.”

FREDDIE MAC
Freddie Mac Executes First Sale of Seriously Delinquent Loans From Its Investment Portfolio MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired Aug 1, 2014) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today announced it has sold deeply delinquent loans from its investment portfolio. The transaction consists of $659 million in unpaid principal balance of loans. It is expected to close later this month. The sale was conducted via a competitive auction at the end of July and executed indirectly through Bank of America affiliates. Twenty-two prospec-
tive buyers participated in the auction. Freddie Mac selected the winning bidder on the basis of economics. The transaction was well received by the market and Freddie Mac will continue to look for opportunities to reduce exposure to less liquid assets in its investment portfolio. The co-advisers for this transaction were Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse Securities.

• Phony agencies charging high fees for services you can get for little or no charge through HUD-approved nonprofit agencies. You can find an agency near you at www.hud.gov. Christina Diaz-Malone, Freddie Mac’s senior director of industry relations, also advises troubled borrowers to read and understand every document before signing. “Never sign documents with errors or blank spaces that can be filled in later,” says Ms. DiazMalone. “If you don’t understand a document, it is your right and duty to seek advice from a trusted lawyer or credit counselor.” She also encourages homeowners to get promises in writing and keep copies of all signed contracts. Suspicious activity, she says, should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission and to your state and local consumer protection agencies. (NAPS)—Mortgage fraud artists are cashing in on the rising tide of distressed borrowers by camouflaging their scams to look like legitimate efforts. In particular, fraudsters are dressing up their Web sites and sales pitches with patriotic imagery so consumers will confuse them with Making Home Affordable, a federal effort the Obama administration launched to help underwater or delinquent homeowners refinance or modify their mortgages. But instead of helping, these fraud artists are likely to charge up-front fees for services that are free elsewhere or, worse, talk owners into signing their deeds away for an empty promise to fix their mortgage problems. Fortunately, borrowers can learn to spot and avoid these frauds by going to the Making Home Affordable Web site— www.MakingHomeAffordable.gov. This official government Web site also provides detailed information on how to qualify for a Making Home Affordable mortgage refinance or modification. Mortgage investor Freddie Mac, a key supporter of Making Home Affordable, has been investigating and prosecuting mortgage fraud for 20 years. Here’s what Freddie Mac fraud experts warn borrowers to beware of: • Empty promises and documents with errors or blank spaces. • Anyone who promises to stop a foreclosure for an up-front fee, refinance your troubles away even if you have bad credit, or offers next-day approvals based on prepayments or up-front fees. • Terms that change at the last minute and “deals” that require you to sign your deed to an investor who “promises” to rent your house back to you.

FreddieMacMultifamilyReaches$80BillionSecuritizationMilestoneandAnnouncesNinthSecuritiesOfferingThisYear,K-F04 MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Aug 4, 2014) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today announced a new offering of Structured Pass-Through Certificates (“K Certificates”), backed exclusively by LIBOR-based, floating rate multifamily mortgages with five- and seven-year terms. The company expects to offer approximately
$1.2 billion in K Certificates (“KF04 Certificates”), which are expected to price the week of August 4, 2014, and settle on or about August 25, 2014. This is Freddie Mac’s ninth K Certificate offering this year. The company also reached an important milestone of securitizing more than $80 billion in multifamily mortgages through

its K-Deal program. “Achieving $80 billion in K-Deal securitizations is an important milestone for us,” said Mitchell Resnick, vice president of Freddie Mac Multifamily Capital Markets. “We’ve gone from issuing two K-Deals in our first year to 19 last year, and have grown the investor base.” Broker ABR, CRS,GRI

Resnick added, “Since the program’s inception in 2009, we have financed over 4,400 properties and 1.2 million units, the majority of which are affordable. While we continue to finance and help preserve an adequate supply of rental housing, we also employ a business strategy that shifts the majority of risk away from the taxpayer by selling it to private investors.” The K-F04 Certificates are backed by recently originated floating rate multifamily mortgages. The K-F04 Certificates will be offered to the market by a syndicate of dealers led by J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated as co-lead managers and joint bookrunners. Barclays Capital Inc., CastleOak Securities, L.P., Jefferies LLC and Wells Fargo Securities, LLC will serve as co-managers. The K-F04 Certificates will not be rated and include one senior principal and interest class and one interest only class. The K-F04 Certificates are backed by corresponding classes from the FREMF 2014-KF04 Mortgage Trust (“K-F04 Trust”). The K-F04 Trust will also issue class B, C and R certificates, which will be subordinate to the classes backing the K-F04 Certificates and will not be guaranteed by Freddie Mac. Freddie Mac is a leading issuer of agency-guaranteed structured multifamily securities. K Certificates feature a wide range of investor options with stable cash flows and a structured credit enhancement. K-Deals typically include guaranteed senior principal and interest, and interest only classes. The preliminary offering circular supplement relating to the K-F04 Certificates can be found at http://www.freddiemac.com/ mbs/data/kf04oc.pdf [PDF]. A Freddie Mac multifamily investor
presentation on the K Certificate deal structure and multifamily loan portfolio performance data is available at FreddieMac.com. Freddie Mac also has an online tool for investors and analysts, Multifamily Securities Investor Access. This is a central database that houses all post-securitization data from Investor Reporting Packages to help investors and analysts monitor K-Deal performance. This announcement is not an offer to sell any Freddie Mac securities. Offers for any given security are made only through applicable offering circulars and related supplements, which incorporate Freddie Mac’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2013, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) on February 27, 2014; all other reports Freddie Mac filed with the SEC pursuant to Section 13(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (“Exchange Act”) since December 31, 2013, excluding any information “furnished” to the SEC on Form 8-K; and all documents that Freddie Mac files with the SEC pursuant to Sections 13(a), 13(c) or 14 of the Exchange Act, excluding any information “furnished” to the SEC on Form 8-K. Restaurant reviews Pulled-pork sandwiches made in-house from slowcooked pork tenderloin are complemented by sweet potato fries.
Enjoy a game and meal at StoneHouse Pub LEMONT – I made a terrible mistake when I ordered my meal at StoneHouse Pub. Don’t get me wrong – the dish I ordered tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed every bite, the flavor, texture, quality of ingredients. It was all perfect. The server tried to warn me, “Are you sure that’s what you want to order?” I wasn’t really paying close attention like I should have. I was engrossed in conversation with my two dining companions, and had picked something absentmindedly. “Yes, I’m sure,” I said. This is a great example of why diners should always listen to their servers. The strangest part of all? I could see myself ordering it again. And regretting it again. The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is probably the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen, aside from ridiculous eating competitions on TV. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef burger, stuffed with the diner’s choice of two ingredients. I chose American cheese and onions. I guess it hadn’t really registered consciously exactly how big that was going to be when I ordered it, but I was certainly brought back to reality when it was delivered. You know how burger commercials on TV make their sandwiches look impossibly tall, but then you order one at a fast-food joint and it’s about a centimeter thick? This was the impressive TV version, except with a high-quality bun, fresh tomato slices, and some of the best-tasting beef patties I’ve ever tried. Knowing that the server had questioned the wisdom of my order, and feeling like I’d be in for some ribbing if I failed to consume the whole thing, I resolved right then that I would not leave Stone-

House Pub without finishing this behemoth. While I was working my way through three meals’ worth of cheeseburger, my companions were enjoying much more reasonable dinners. One had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the other went for the cod fish sandwich, a deepfried filet served with lettuce, tomato and onion. They were both well-pleased by their orders. We were fortunate to be at StoneHouse on the night of a major sporting event, and the pub filled up over the course of our time there with fans enjoying the convivial atmosphere. As the only sports fan among our trio (sports and overeating go together, right?), I was caught up in the enthusiasm. This is clearly a great place to see a game. For an eatery that doesn’t put on airs or claim to be a fine dining establishment, StoneHouse, nevertheless, clearly takes the food part of its business seriously. There were wraps, salads, pizza, baby back ribs, tacos, baked tilapia and a variety of items on the menu when we visited. As the evening wore on, I became less and less an active participant in our group’s conversation, as I focused on the task before me. My taste buds still wanted more, but my stomach was starting to

The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub lets you pick any two ingredients to go between the patties. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef. StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is a great place to watch a sporting event, to have dinner with friends, or to relax with a drink after a long day. protest. By the time I finished off the last few bites, I had become well-acquainted with the concept of the Pyrrhic victory – I may have won, but I didn’t particularly feel like a winner in terms of restraint. So learn from my exam-
ple – you can get a great meal at StoneHouse Pub, but if you order the stuffed burger, you’d better be prepared for a challenge. Or maybe cut the burger in half and take a portion of it home. That would’ve been a really good idea.

Jordan Westerkamp surveys the field in Nebraska’s game against Purdue last season. The wide receiver, a Montini graduate, is in line to be a big contributor for the Cornhuskers’ offense as a redshirt sophomore this season.
Q&A
Montini grad prepping for breakout season at Nebraska By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com After redshirting his first year on campus, Jordan Westerkamp, a Montini graduate from Lombard, had a big impact for Nebraska’s football team last year. The 6-foot tall wide receiver was third on Jordan the CornhuskWesterkamp ers with 283 receiving yards and became the team’s primary punt returner. His Hail Mary reception against Northwestern won the game on the last play of the game. Westerkamp recently talked with Suburban Life

reported for fall camp Sunday, so we’re pretty much done with that now. Santaromita: Nebraska is known for its fan base. What have you noticed about Nebraska fans? Westerkamp: It’s awesome. The fan base here is so amazing. There’s so many people that are a part of it throughout the entire nation. Our Fan Day [which was Aug. 1] is a great day to have where we get to connect to fans and show our appreciation to them as well because they are very loyal and they do so much for us.
Santaromita: What was your summer schedule like? Westerkamp: Throughout our summer, we had our strength and conditioning proSantaromita: Was the Hail Mary gram where we were lifting catch against Northwestern the weights and conditioning and biggest cheer you’ve ever received doing our speed workouts. We for a catch?
Westerkamp: Yeah, absolutely. 90,000 people here for that one. I was fortunate to have that play happen. It was a great experience and a great time, but I don’t like to dwell on the past too much. I’m looking forward now to this season. Santaromita: Are you expecting to have a little bigger impact on the team this season? Westerkamp: I just want to be able to contribute as much as possible to help the success of the team. Last year was a great year to get my feet wet and get playing time. I enjoyed it. I made some mistakes, made some plays, learned from it so now I’m just going into another year with a little bit more experience.
Santaromita: Do you still keep track of things at Montini at all? Westerkamp: Yeah, I stay in touch with my old head coach Chris Andriano. I always stay in touch with him. I try to stay in touch with him during the season, but it’s hard because our season is going on as well. I was able to get home and visit there this past May and go say hi to all my coaches and see some old friends, so that was good. Santaromita: What are your goals for this upcoming season? Westerkamp: Our team goal is to win the Big Ten and win a national championship. Starting with fall camp and this past summer we’re going to do everything we can to achieve that.

Jack Allen
Aaron Bailey
COLLEGE: Michigan State HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive lineman Allen enters this fall slated to start for the third year in a row. After redshirting his first year on campus in 2011, Allen has played in 25 games with 24 starts since 2012. All but five of those starts have come at center, where he is expected to play this season. The Spartans are defending Big Ten champions, and Allen is one of three players who started on the offensive line in Michigan State’s Rose Bowl win against Stanford that are slated to return.
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Quarterback Bailey, listed at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, used his size, speed and overall athleticism to get on the field in his first year on campus. He played in nine games, being mostly used as a goal-line quarterback. Bailey ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more, all from 10 yards or less. Overall, he ran for 83 yards on 20 carries and was 2-for-5 for four yards through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase, a four-year starter at quarterback, is gone, but Wes Lunt, a highly touted transfer from Oklahoma State will battle for playing time with Bailey and fellow local product Reilly O’Toole.

As a freshman, the 6-foot-2, 300-pounder saw action in 10 games.
Austin Teitsma COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Defensive line After playing in seven games as a redshirt freshman and all 12 contests as a sophomore, Teitsma earned a starting role last fall at defensive tackle. The 6-foot-2, 290-pounder finished sixth on the Illini with 53 tackles and also added 5 ½ tackles for loss, one forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. He tied a career high with eight tackles against Northwestern in the final game of the season. See BIG TEN, page 32

Matthew Harris
Reilly O’Toole
Kyle Prater
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Cornerback/kick returner Harris’ first game action came on special teams, both on kickoffs and kick returns. With Venric Mark injured for most of the season, Harris became the Wildcats’ primary kickoff returner. He took 21 kicks for 484 yards, including a 47-yard return against Western Michigan. As a cornerback, Harris started the last five games of the season, totaling 36 tackles and being named to ESPN.com’s Big Ten All-Freshman team. He was one of just two true freshmen to play last season for Northwestern.
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Quarterback Entering his fourth and final year with the Illini, O’Toole has seen action behind center in each of his first three seasons. As a junior, he played in six games, completing 12-of-16 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 34 yards. O’Toole started twice as a sophomore, finishing with 564 yards and six touchdowns that year, after taking part in 10 games as a freshman.
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Proviso West YEAR: Senior POSITION: Wide receiver The USC transfer has struggled to make his mark in two seasons at Northwestern. In the past two years, he has combined for 19 receptions and 113 yards without catching any touchdowns. Entering his senior season, Prater is hoping to match the expectations placed on him out of high school. His 59 yards last season ranked ninth on the team, but three of the players who finished ahead of him were seniors.
Dan Vitale
Jordan Walsh
Jordan Westerkamp
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Junior POSITION: Superback In just two seasons for the Wildcats, this WWS graduate already has carved out quite a solid career for himself. After receiving playing time as a true freshman, Vitale started all 12 games in 2013 as a superback (a combination fullback and tight end). Catching at least one pass in every contest, the incoming junior finished third on Northwestern with 34 receptions for 382 yards, which included a five-catch, 101yard performance against California. He also hauled in three touchdowns.
COLLEGE: Iowa HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive line After seeing spot duty and playing in seven games in 2012, Walsh ascended to a starting position last fall and was entrenched at right guard for all 13 contests. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder helped the Hawkeyes total nearly 500 yards of offense in each of the team’s first two games of the 2013 season while also playing a role in Iowa rushing for over 200 yards in five straight games to begin the 2013 campaign.
COLLEGE: Nebraska HIGH SCHOOL: Montini YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Wide receiver Westerkamp made a big impression as a redshirt freshman for the Cornhuskers. He played in all 13 games and started the Gator Bowl win against Georgia. He was third on Nebraska with 283 receiving yards and fourth in receptions with 20. He also had 19 punt returns for 51 yards. Westerkamp’s only touchdown came against Northwestern on a 49-yard Hail Mary on the last play of the game to give the Huskers the win. This fall, he could see play a bigger role in the offense as the second-leading wide receiver among returners.
