LJHS student council raises almost $6,000 for cause By AMANDA FRAZER msleditorial@shawmedia.com

To see a YouTube video of LJHS teachers getting pies to their face, visit www.shawurl.com/x6t. Moments, a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting parents with critically ill children in the home, in the hospital and via web resources so they can spend as much time as possible sharing the most normal moments possible with their children. Jason Wiertel, LJHS teacher and student council sponsor, said this was the second year the student council helped Normal Moments. He said language arts teacher Natalie Oros, who donates to Normal Moments each year with her family, suggested the student council get involved with the organization. “We decided to have more of an interactive situation so [the students] could see the impact they were making,” Wiertel said. “Now we finally found something they can see the value in first-hand and you can’t substitute that to give the kids that kind of ex-

perience. It’s what teaching is all about, really.” The student council raised money for the cause through a competition. Wiertel said students purchased tickets and placed them into cups, each of which represented the 20 teachers who volunteered to participate in the contest. Once the votes were tallied, the top five teachers to receive the most votes would receive a whipped cream pie – or pies – to the face at an assembly held Dec. 18 at the school. “It went really well,” Wagoner said of the assembly. “After every single pie was thrown there was a roar of shouts and screams and laughing in the crowd.” LJHS teachers also pitched in for the cause, as Wiertel said. They purchased about $600-$700 worth of gifts for Normal Moments. The student council also received help from outside of the school. Eighth-grader and student council member Kaela Khan wrote a letter to Lisle-based 123 Exteriors Inc. that explained the cause and asked if the firm would be willing to donate money. Her

request was answered with a $1,000 check. “She was upside down and flipped out excited about it,” said Kerry Khan, administrative accountant with 123 Exteriors. “The owner of the company is a genuinely generous guy and if he sees a worthy cause he doesn’t hesitate [to donate].” After collecting money, student council members shopped for gifts on the children’s wish lists and then wrapped the gifts in Wiertel’s classroom, which he said “has been like Santa’s workshop the last few days.” Seven student council members accompanied Wiertel to deliver the presents to the families, including Wagoner. She said the children were very excited to take the presents and put them under their Christmas trees. “The parents were shocked we brought so many presents and didn’t think there would be that many,” Wagoner said. “One little girl came up to us and said, ‘When Santa comes to our house he’ll see the presents and say there are already presents here and won’t have to give any to us

this year!’ That was cute.” Tricia Fragen, founder of Normal Moments, said with the help of the LJHS student council and individual donors, the organization has been able to provide help to about 200 children in families throughout the greater Chicago region. She said the families in the program face financial hardships since one or more of their children have medical complexities or are critically ill. From the donation, Fragen said she hopes the LJHS students will gain a broader understanding of what it’s like to give and not just receive during the holidays. “For those who help with the gift delivery, they get the opportunity to meet children with completely different life experiences from theirs,” Fragen said. “All the families who participate in this program face financial challenges, but almost all have a bounty of spirit and gratitude that I hope the LJHS children get to experience when they meet the families.” For more information on Normal Moments, visit www. normalmoments.org. LISLE – For two families with critically ill children, the holidays were made a little brighter this year because of the efforts of the Lisle Junior High School Student Council. Since the beginning of December, the student council raised more than $5,700 to purchase gifts from the wish lists of two suburban families with three and seven children. On Friday, the student council members delivered the gifts to the families, along with any extra money not used to buy the gifts. “It just makes me feel really happy that we could come together as a school and put so much money toward the foundation,” said Lisle Junior High School Student Council President and eighth-grader Francesca Wagoner. “And we gave a lot of gifts to the kids and made them feel really happy during Christmas time.” The student council began raising money in early December for the Adopt-a-Family program through Normal

of three new board members. The new members were inducted at the September and October board meetings. They are: Lori Mandel, of Forest Envelope Company; Steve Bauer, of Meltzer, Purtill & Stelle, LLC; and Martha Nilles. All are Lisle residents. While increasing the size of their board, Partners for Parks Foundation also experienced growth in the participation in the annual Scarecrow Scramble 5k Run/Walk. “In October we wrapped up our ninth run. We experienced a 50 percent increase in online reservations and had over 675 runners registered,” said Lisa Leone, Scarecrow Scramble committee chair. In November, the third annual holiday light recycling drive began. Worn strings of holiday lights are being col-

lected at the Lisle Park District Recreation Center, Community Center, and Wheatstack now through Feb. 1. In addition to the annual Scarecrow Scramble 5k Run/ Walk and light recycling drive, the foundation also fundraises through the sale of personalized paving bricks and Jewel-Osco gift cards. The personalized paving bricks are installed in the path leading up to and around the entrance of Sea Lion Aquatic Park. More information can be found at www.LislePartnersForPark.org. For those who are in need of financial assistance from Partners for Parks, the application can be picked up at the Lisle Park District Recreation Center or found on the Partners for Parks website.

LISLE – In response to the growth of the organization and park district-wide financial assistance, the Partners for Parks Foundation added three new members to the board of directors this fall. The foundation continues to support Lisle Park District residents through special events, fundraising efforts and the annual holiday light recycling program, according to a news release. The initial vacancy for one board seat was posted in May following the passing of Lawrence A. Smith, a founding member, who had served on the board since 1999. When there was an overwhelming response of applications, the eight-member board voted and passed the addition

DOWNERS GROVE – For the hundreds of families the Downers Grove Area FISH Food Pantry supports on a weekly basis, so much depends on a red cargo van. Volunteers like Alan Chandler drive the van about 200 miles a week to area grocery stores, churches, schools and other food donors, hauling back hundreds of pounds of food to the pantry for distribution. Unfortunately, the 1999 Ford has seen better days. “It’s nickel-and-diming us to death,” Chandler said. Another volunteer, June Miller, said the charity is making repairs necessary to keep it running, but that it is clearly in need of a new – or at least newer – van. “We just had a new starter [installed],” Miller said. “They had gone out to make their pick up, gone over to the store, and it wouldn’t start to come back to the pantry. And I guess they had to switch loads, and it had to be towed in to have that fixed. It’s things like that, that are going wrong.” This holiday season, FISH is putting out an appeal to anyone who might be able to donate a better cargo van, or offer a used one for sale at discount. “We have a certain amount that we can pay,” Miller said. “We just can’t pay full price for a brand new one.” A donation would be tax-deductible. Miller said the deteriorating van, which has about

114,000 miles of city driving, also creates safety concerns. FISH also had to replace the brakes, which recently went out as someone was driving it. There is also exhaust that creeps into the vehicle, she said, the heat and AC only work on full blast. It also needs new bearings, among other repairs. “It’s a rust bucket,” Miller said. “We’re having the thing looked over by a person in town who does our repairs. And we’re getting a full evaluation with a price tag.” FISH supports a regular clientele of 135 families with food, in addition to other community support. “Those regular customers come down to the basement and pick up the bag they’re entitled, too,” she said. “But up on the street level, we have all kinds of fresh food that comes from the grocery store that [is distributed]. Potatoes and apples and bread by the pallet load, is sitting there. Anything left over from up stairs goes to senior housing or is driven down to Romeoville to another pantry. Nothing is wasted.” FISH Food Pantry helps families from Downers Grove, Lisle and Darien with food. Families from Westmont and Woodridge are entitled to clothing and other help.

And more than 800 families received Christmas presents for their children through our Share the Spirit program. Each year, we are amazed at the outpouring of toys, books, DVDs, gift cards, mittens and hats the community donates for families who would otherwise go without. There are many joyous sounds that are associated with the holiday season. At People’s Resource Center, we also celebrate some of the lovely sounds that are heard each day: • The crunch of bags as they are filled with healthy, nutritious food to feed a family • The harmonious voices of students learning to speak English • The hum of computers as they are repaired and the sounds of joy as students learn to master them • The swish of the paintbrush against canvases in an art class. We are so grateful for the many supporters and volunteers who make the work of People’s Resource Center possible. May your holiday traditions bring you joy and may the spirit of the season remain with you all the year through.

TIPS FOR SENIORS ON DENTAL CARE Q: Are there any special considerations regarding dental care that seniors should keep in mind? A: Each stage of life presents its special challenges for dental care. The senior years are no exception. Some seniors think that as they age, trips to the dentist become less necessary. However, it’s just as important for a senior as it is for a thirtysomething to visit the dentist at least twice a year. One reason is that the roots of the teeth become more exposed as we age, and consequently more vulnerable to cavities. Exposed roots are also more sensitive to hot and cold. In addition to being an uncomfortable sensation, this sensitivity can begin to affect a person’s diet, with certain foods being avoided. Anti-sensitivity toothpaste can help, but if you’re feeling temperature sensitivity you should see a dentist. The cause of the discomfort may be a cracked tooth. Also, as we age, fillings can chip or weaken, opening the door for decay. In your senior years you also are more likely to be taking a variety of medications, which can affect your oral health. Keeping your dentist informed of your medication regimen is another reason for consistent visits. If you wear dentures, you know they need periodic adjustment to reflect the changes in your mouth. The list goes on. As you grow older, keep up your routines of brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly.

Naperville couple killed in house fire

NAPERVILLE – The two Naperville residents killed in a house fire Dec. 18 have been identified as Janet W. and Thomas B. Lambert. The couple was found dead inside the home at 1212 Field Court after emergency personnel, who responded to the fire around 6:50 a.m., had to be removed from the building due to concerns of a structural collapse. Firefighters were able to rescue one of the home’s occupants, a 21-year-old male, and two others, an 84-year-old male and his 56-year-old daughter, who were transported to Edward Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the release said. When firefighters re-entered the building, they found the bodies in the rear of the house, officials said. A cause of the fire and manner of death are pending investigation, according to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

Fire District promotes holiday fire safety

LISLE – The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District will be participating in the Holiday Fire Safety campaign through December. While being a part of Keep the Wreaths Red, the five fire stations will display large wreaths with red lights. The lights will remain red unless there is a fire in the district caused by any part of a holiday decoration or display. Each holiday fire will cause a red light to be replaced by a white light. The program, which ends Jan. 1, is to remind residents to use proper care when setting up holiday displays, lights, candles, Christmas trees and more. For more information on Keep the Wreaths Red or fire prevention, contact the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Prevention Bureau at 630353-3030 or visit www.lwfd.org.

Shaw Media to buy The Herald-News SHAW MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire the assets of The Herald-News in Joliet from Sun-Times Media. The purchase is expected to close during the first week of January. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Herald-News has been serving Joliet, Will County and Grundy County communities for more than 150 years

and will continue as part of Shaw Media’s newspaper group. “We are excited to bring The Herald-News into our established, and growing, family-owned media portfolio,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We expect to maintain the storied tradition of serving the Joliet region with a high-quality, community-oriented newspaper.” “We have found a great

buyer for The Herald-News in Shaw Media,” said Tim Knight, president of SunTimes Media. “This sale will allow the Sun-Times to focus its resources on transforming its core products.” Shaw Media, based in Dixon, is the third oldest continuously owned and operated family media company in the nation. It is the parent company of Suburban Life Media. The purchase of The Herald-News adds to Shaw Me-

dia’s growing portfolio of publications in the Chicago suburbs. It follows the 2012 purchase of Downers Grovebased Suburban Life Media, which added 22 weekly publications in Cook, DuPage, Kane and Will counties to the company’s award-winning publications in Crystal Lake, DeKalb, Dixon, Grayslake, Morris, Princeton, St. Charles and Sterling in Illinois, and in Newton and Creston in Iowa.

Shaw names three to vice president posts SHAW MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media’s Board of Directors elected three executives to serve as vice presidents and officers of the company. At its Dec. 12 meeting, the company elected Don T. Bricker vice president of suburban publishing, J. Tom Shaw vice president of digital media, and Ben Shaw vice president of technology. Shaw Media is the parent company of Suburban Life Media. “This is an exciting time for our company,” said John

Rung, President of Shaw Media. “We are fortunate to have many talented people in our company. We are particularly pleased that our Board of Directors has recognized Don, J. Tom and Ben with increased responsibility. I look forward to working with them as we chart the course for a successful future.” Bricker joined Shaw Media in 2008 as publisher of the company’s Kane and DeKalb County publications. He was named regional publisher and group general manager earlier this year. Before joining Shaw, Bricker spent 16 years with

Freedom Communications, including four years as publisher of the Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif. J. Tom Shaw joined Shaw Media in 2006. He has held a variety of posts, including publisher of Shaw’s Kane County, Lake County and Suburban Life publications. In the past few years, he has overseen the launch of numerous niche products in print and digital formats. In his new role, J. Tom Shaw will lead efforts to grow audience and sales through digital platforms across Shaw’s Illinois and Iowa opera-

tions. Rung announced that a search for J. Tom Shaw’s replacement as publisher of Suburban Life Media would begin immediately. Ben Shaw has been with Shaw Media since 2004. He was named IT Director in 2006 and assumed responsibility for digital operations in 2010. Ben Shaw now will lead technology efforts across the company. He also will develop and maintain the infrastructure necessary to support Shaw’s efforts in digital media and will spearhead the launch of a database marketing program.

Dead dog is reminder of pet safety in village By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – After the sudden death of their youngest pup, two Westmont men want to remind fellow residents about the importance of being careful when walking family dogs. Angelo, a 3-year-old Yorkie-Maltese mix, died Monday after being hit by a black SUV a Cass and Traube ave-

nues, his owner Bob Mueller said. “We were just waiting at the stop light to cross,” Mueller said. “Angelo was jumping around... the light changed and he ran out in the street. ... It was just bad circumstances.” The car’s driver did not stop to check on the dog, instead driving away, Mueller said. The two did not contact

the police after the incident. “There wasn’t much that could be done,” Mueller said. “If anything people need to be really careful with their dogs.” The two have lost part of their family, Mueller said. “It’s very painful,” he said. Sgt. Steve Thompson, with the Westmont Police Department, said he can’t remember the last time a dog was hit by a car in Westmont.

“It’s not a regular occurrence at all,” Thompson said. “Especially with people who walk their dogs.” For residents who do walk their dogs at night, Thompson said the department wants to remind people to stay on the sidewalks. “Keep the leash so that you can keep yourself and dog safe,” Thompson said. “And be sure you can control your dog.”

Old Town Pour House comes to Oak Brook OAK BROOK – Old Town Pour House proclaims beer a staple of life. The restaurant-bar backs that up once you step inside the new Oak Brook eatery. Nestled in an expansive storefront underneath Neiman Marcus inside the upscale Oakbrook Center, Old Town Pour House gives shoppers a cozy wind-down over a cold brew and American cuisine. The restaurant opened on the east side of the shopping mall in late November, making it Old Town Pour House’s second location, as the owners ventured west from their popular Chicago location. The exterior screams modern with its bold signage and contemporary outdoor fireplaces. Inside, it’s the same story, with a mix of tables and booths surrounding a bar with a good number of flat-screens. A companion and I dined at Pour House on a recent holiday shopping night. Picking up the menu, we discovered that beer selections practically outnumber food options three to one – a good thing in my book. From ciders to lagers to wheats, there are plenty of unique craft selections to pair with your meals. The full bar boasts about 90 taps. My date and I kicked off the experience with a pair of tasty appetizers – the Firecracker Rolls under the “Bar Bites” portion of the menu, and the Truffle Mac N Cheese under “Shareables.” Our waitperson assured us both sections of the menu are essentially shared plates. The Firecracker Rolls are a spicy mix of Cajun chicken, a vegetable medley and avocado cream. It’s definitely a spicy dish – have a beverage handy – but the avocado cream was a nice cool-down. The Truffle Mac N Cheese was the favorite dish of the night at our table. With Parmesan breadcrumbs and black truffle, accented by smoked bacon tidbits, it was anything

For our entrees, my date, readying for some post-meal shopping, opted light for the Pour House Chopped Salad. The salad is a fresh-made combo of marinated grilled chicken, romaine lettuce and a host of other ingredients. The sweet-and-sour tarragon dressing was a great touch; you may want to ask for extra. I opted for the Pour House Burger. The Angus beef patty was topped with aged white cheddar and a pair of beer-battered onion rings on a Portuguese bun. It was a solid burger complemented nicely with olive-oil-parsley fries. Other menu options extend to five additional salad selections, including the Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad and the BBQ Smoked Chicken Salad, a trio of soups and five dinner entrees ranging from Miller Farms Chicken to Cedar River Strip.

TOP 5 HIGHLIGHTS

Fall season provides highlights for Lisle sports By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The winter sports season is still in its early stages, but it’s not too late to look back at some memorable achievements for Lisle High School student-athletes from the fall season. The football team had a memorable last-second win, boys soccer was unbeatable at one point, and a tournament title was a big highlight for girls volleyball. Here’s a list of highlights from the fall sports season, listed in no particular order.

1. Buchelt’s boot lifts Lions over Comets

The Lions were 1-2 heading into a Week 4 Interstate Eight Small home game against Reed-Custer, but they turned in perhaps their most memorable performance of the season in that game. Lisle scored 17 points in the second half and led 21-14 late in the fourth before the Comets scored and converted the 2-point conversion for a 22-21 lead. A 31-yard hookup between quarterback Griffin Huba and receiver Andy Simpson got the Lions to the R-C 20-yard line with just seconds left in the game, at which point the kicking unit took the field. Ben Buchelt nailed 37-yard field goal as time expired for 24-22 win. “[That] was a character win,” head coach Dan Sanko said at the time. “I give our boys a lot of credit coming back like that in the last minute.”

2. Boys soccer kicks it into high gear

After a rocky 6-6 start, the Lions won five straight games by outscoring opponents 27-4. The winning streak in-

Kyle Hendzel tallied a hat tricks in 7-0 wins over Newark and Plano, and had two in a 6-0 victory against Sandwich. Alex Ancede, Mitch Boyce, Bobby Dickey, Joe Gausselin, Jon Harmon, Oz Omoike, Jamie Saddler and Josh Soukup also scored goals in those three games. The Lions rode that late-season momentum to an 8-1 win over EPIC Charter Academy in their playoff opener before falling in penalty kicks to a Montini team that played for a sectional title.

3. Chan caps career in fine fashion

Lisle Jimmy Gill fends off a Manteno defender in a Sept. 9 home game. Gill and the Lions lost that game, but they won five in a row in decisive fashion later in the season. Lisle’s cross country runners a chance to shine. On the boys side of things, senior Jeff Chan placed fourth overall in the Class 1A Aurora Christian regional with a time of 16:04 and moved on to the sectional, where he placed 12th to advance to state. Chan capped his high school career by finishing in the top 100 at state, where he was 69th with a time of 16:18. The girls team placed seventh at the Aurora Christian regional as Kaitlyn Stanley (29th overall), Kara Kendra (40th), Dawn Yackley (52nd), Tiffany Compton (53rd) and Kati Young (54th) formed a solid pack to carry the team to the sectional race.

4. Volleyball digs in for mid-season success

Despite losing several key players from the 2012 team and having to put new faces on the floor, Lisle’s girls volleyball team found success this season. The Lions took their lumps early in the year but found their form as the season progressed. After falling in their first eight matches of the year, they won eight of their next 10 contests in the middle of the season, including five in a title-winning performance at the Ridgewood tournament.

5. All-conference trio lifts girls golf

Before the season, girls

golf coach Scott Waibel was excited about his team’s potential, and the Lions didn’t disappoint. The Lions won 10 dual meets, including six in the Interstate Eight Conference, and at the conference meet, Lisle placed third in the team standings. Mary Sullivan fired a 94 and finished fourth, Alexis Gustas was ninth individually with a score of 108, and Bella Daly carded a 112 to finish 13th as all three earned all-conference honors. In the postseason, the Lions scored a 457 and finished second as a team at the Ridgewood regional and punch their tickets to the sectional tournament.

TOP 6 HIGHLIGHTS

Benet athletes have moved on to the winter season, but there’s plenty of positive moments to look back on from the fall. The girls volleyball team continued its success with a third straight state final appearance while the football and boys soccer teams also had winning seasons. Here is a list of Benet’s top fall sports moments, listed in no particular order.

4. Team effort in postseason paces Benet into state finals

A complete team effort powered the Benet boys cross country team through regional and sectional action and into the state finals. After junior Brady McLaughlin’s second place overall finish at the conference meet helped the team secure the East Suburban Catholic title, six of the Redwings’ seven members finished in the top-30 to help the team take fourth at regionals. At the Wheaton Academy sectional, McLaughlin and fellow junior Sean Harnik both finished in the top-30 as the Redwings gutted out a fifth place finish and earned the last qualifying spot for the state finals. At Peoria, Benet finished 19th out of 25 teams.

1. Benet girls volleyball plays for state title

5. Girls tennis wins conference championship

This fall, the Redwing girls tennis team went 9-0 in East Suburban Catholic play, taking home their fifth conference title in as many years. Propelled by senior Leah Tzakis and sophomore Coco Tzakis on the singles court, Benet tied for second at the Naperville North sectional. Coco Tzakis won her first match at the state finals while Leah Tzakis won three of five matches.

2. Duvic makes way into books, Beneventi commits to Iowa

With the offense struggling to convert drives following the loss of starting running back Porter Ontko, John Duvic, the Redwings’ place kicker and punter helped secure back-to-back victories by kicking nine field goals in two weeks. In total, the highly recruited kicker nailed 19 field goals this season – 12 from 35 yards or longer, and three from 50 yards or more. He set an IHSA record for most field goals made during a game (five) and set a Benet record for longest field goal made during a game – a 54-

After the curtain closed on Redwings season in the first round of the playoffs, junior quarterback Jack Beneventi committed to Iowa, selecting

the Hawkeyes over Illinois, Notre Dame, Louisville and Western Michigan.

3. Benet boys soccer takes regional title

The Redwings’ recent dom-

inance of the East Suburban Catholic Conference continued this season as Benet was crowned conference champions for the third straight year. Behind a blistering offense led by all-conference

Benet senior Alex Bassetto shot a 75 and junior Ben Johnson shot a 76 at a regional meet to help the Redwings defeat nine teams and capture the regional title. Bassetto upped his play at sectionals, shooting a 73 while the team took third overall. The Redwings capped an impressive season by shooting a combined 43-over and placing fifth in the 3A state finals.

Championships at the Benet Invite and Wheaton Classic were merely a prelude to the run that the Benet girls volleyball team would make through the East Suburban Catholic conference and 4A playoffs. This season, the Redwings won 36 games – the fourth best total in school history – earning regional, sectional and supersectional crowns en route to their third consecutive trip downstate – the program’s fourth appearance at the 4A finals in the last seven years. Led by seniors Caroline Wolf, Whitney Battoe, Stephanie Sinnappan, Ashley Hitchcock, Brittany Pavich, Kelly O’Malley and a strong core of juniors, Benet came from behind to defeat Crystal Lake South 25-22, 25-18 in the state semifinals, advancing to the state championship for the third year in a row.

players Michael Rindler and Kyle Kenagy as well as ESCC MVP Sam Knapke, the Redwings secured a No. 3 seed in the 3A playoffs, knocking off Hinsdale South and Oak Park River Forest on their way to a regional title. Benet then lost by one goal to Morton in the sectional semifinals.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT HUBARKUSH.COM

Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center? Hub Arkush This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel. My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake. Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all. With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps,

even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for. If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them. Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day. But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you. The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing quarterback sacks. There, it makes a difference who’s under center. Rodgers has thrown four intercep-

Therma Tru Doors

tions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts. Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks. With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way. Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best outing of the year versus Atlanta in Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers

for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day. After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run. Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often. That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears. Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings are serviceable safeties, but Burnett has failed to make the leap to perennial Pro-Bowler the Packers envisioned.

Defense: Kansas City; 147 fantasy points, 278 points allowed, 11 defense/special team touchdowns. Of course, the Dream Team is simply that – a dream. One franchise could not have drafted Charles, McCoy, Johnson and Forte, regardless of league size. However, an extremely shrewd owner might have been able to swing Manning, Charles, Gordon, Gostkowski and Kansas City in a draft. Any fantasy team with those five players on its roster is probably sporting some hardware right now.

In a perfect world, you have been crowned as your league’s fantasy football champion. More likely, however, it’s wait until next year. In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while. If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.

This week, we recognize the best 2013 fantasy players with a Fantasy Dream Team and an All-First-Round Team (the top 12 fantasy players, regardless of position).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

FOOD |

Don’t peel it When you remove the peel or skin from fruits and vegetables, you lose a lot of nutrition — it’s a concentrated source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and potentially beneficial phytochemicals. Here are some facts you might not know about peels, from the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter: 1. Vegetable peels or skins are particularly good sources of insoluble fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Some peels, notably apple, are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps lower blood cholesterol and control blood sugar. 2. Apple peels may help prevent cancer. Lab research has found that whole apples have a much greater effect on cancer cells than peeled ones, probably because of the antioxidants in the skin. 3. Potato skins have far more fiber, iron, potassium and B vitamins than the flesh. Potato skins are also rich in antioxidants. 4. You don’t need to wash fruits and vegetables in soap — plain water is fine. It will remove nearly all dirt, as well as bacteria and some pesticide residues, if any are present, on the surface. Scrub firmer produce like potatoes with a vegetable brush. The wax on fruits and veggies is harmless.

EASY RECIPE

Onion Crumb Brussels Sprouts Casserole Serves 12. • 1/2 cup Country Crock Spread, divided • 2 cups chopped onions • 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs • 8 cups cooked Brussels sprouts (or thawed frozen), halved • 1 cup fat-free half and half Preheat oven to 375 F. Melt 4 tablespoons Country Crock Spread over medium-high heat in large nonstick skillet and cook onion, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Add crumbs; cook, stirring until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes; remove to bowl. Melt remaining spread in same skillet. Add Brussels sprouts; toss. Stir in half and half and 1/2 the crumb mixture. Pour into shallow 2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly around edges.

Stuffing

Holidays are often stuffed with our favorite foods of all time. However, when you rely on old standbys just because they are familiar, it lessens the potential pizzazz. The ideas that follow — they each take just seconds to read and are almost that quick to prepare — prove that virtually any winter holiday staple (like potatoes, stuffing or pumpkin) can be twisted and turned into a new holiday masterpiece on demand. Better yet, rather than starting from scratch, they can improve the meal for just pennies per serving. Food preparation — even for holiday guests — can be easy, nutritious, inexpensive, fun and fast, as the following split-second sensations prove. The dishes are delicious evidence that everyone — including you and your kid helpers — has time for tasty home cooking and more importantly, the family time in the kitchen that goes along with it! Another benefit: You effortlessly become a better cook, even when preparing holiday specialties, since there are no right or wrong amounts. These are virtually-can’t-go-wrong combinations, so whatever you choose to use can’t help but

Stuffed muffins: Stuffing doesn’t always need to be stuffed into something. It can make quite a statement on its own. Fill either regular-sized or minimuffin trays with cooked stuffing and bake or form it into loaves. Or stuff the stuffing, by placing a surprise, like a prune or a green olive, in the middle of a stuffing muffin. Main course: Stuffing can function as a surprising course, rather than its usual side dish status. Substitute seasoned, dry stuffing mix for the bread, or along with it, in your favorite bread pudding recipe for a kick.

Ham or turkey New glaze: Give your glaze a fresh outlook, and create an innovative meal theme at the same time. For Hawaiian flair, for instance, glaze with a syrup you’ve created as it reduces while you are stirring on the stovetop from coconut milk, pineapple juice, freshly ground black pepper and cayenne pepper. Turn it into a theme by adding chopped macadamia nuts and fresh pineapple chunks to your side dishes and a drizzle of bottled guava, papaya or mango nectar to your pumpkin or apple dessert pie before baking. Then, top it with sprinkles of sweet-

ened coconut flakes just before serving. Gravy upgrade: As good as they are, gravies and sauces are often bland. Why not perk them up a bit as they heat. Consider adding just a dash of strategic flavor, like cayenne and chopped jalapenos (experts recommend wearing latex gloves and not touching your eyes during or after handling peppers); finely diced garlic and pumpkin pie spice; or peach jam or allfruit, no-sugar spread (also available in the jam aisles of most supermarkets) and curry powder.

Sweet potatoes Baked buffet: Instead of a casserole, consider baking sweet potatoes to serve to guests individually, along with a buffet of toppings, such as honey, pure maple syrup, mini marshmallows, composed butters (like those to which you’ve added freshly chopped herbs or spices) or a mixture of diced dried fruit like cranberries, golden raisins, apricots and figs. Standout substitute: Mix in or substitute sweet potatoes for pumpkin in a dessert pie or muffins. Sweeten a sweet potato puree (made from the flesh of peeled sweet potatoes) with honey or brown sugar, warm it and use as a dessert topping for vanilla ice cream that you then top with

browned, melting mini marshmallows and toasted walnuts.

Pumpkin or apple Cozy cocktail: Consider a toast with mini pumpkin or apple smoothies (or a combination of both) during appetizer time or to start off the meal. In a blender, to vanilla soymilk, add a dash of canned pumpkin pie filling or apple pie filling, banana, pumpkin seeds, candied pecans and ice. Blend until smooth. Side surprise: Add minced, unpeeled pumpkin or apple to your stuffing or green bean casserole before cooking, as well as a sprinkling of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon and crushed graham cracker crumbs. The same additions can be made to a mixed green or spinach salad if you cube and roast the pumpkin first. (Apples, of course, can be used raw.) You can serve it warm on top of the salad for a wilted effect, or let it cool first. Drizzle with roasted pumpkin seeds and poppy seed-based salad dressing, or raspberry vinaigrette.
