He said the township also wants to see how the development would affect stormwater drainage in the area. Jones said the development property has been vacant for many years, with a house having been located on it once. As part of the development agreement, Pulte is also proposing to donate about 25 acres of land west of the housing development to the township. The land would connect to the sanc-
tuary, allowing the township to possibly expand the sanctuary. Jones said developers are normally required to donate cash or a couple of acres of land to the Lemont Park District for recreational purposes within the subdivision. The township donation would be in place of the park district donation. Rosendahl said the land would be an attractive addition to the sanctuary. He said the land would add to the sanctuary’s trail system and get the trails clos-
The Lemont Village Board also had preliminary discussions on its capital budget for 2016-2020 during its Jan. 14 meeting. The plan outlines 33 projects, costing approximately $21 million over five years. Most projects involve restoration and construction on water systems and roadways. The most expensive project would be replacing the water main on Ledochowski Street, from McCarthy Road to Schultz Street. The project is estimated to cost $1.05 million. The board is expected to vote on the budget in February. er to the trail along the I&M Canal. LEMONT – The Lemont Village Board gave a housing developer its approval on conceptual plans for a subdivision near the Lemont Township Heritage Woodlands Sanctuary during a Jan. 14 meeting. Pulte Homes is proposing a 93-home development on 43.4 acres of land east of Interstate 355, south of New Avenue and north of 127th Street. Planning and economic development director Charity Jones said the main concern for the development is the access points, which a subdivision needs to have two of for emergency vehicle purposes. The first would be Timberline Drive to the northeast. However, creating a second would require improving a trail in the sanctuary so emergency vehicles could use it. Jones said the trail would not be open to general traffic. Township Supervisor Steven Rosendahl said he has not seen any engineering plans for the expanded trail, but his major concern would be if the

River Valley School receives grant for laboratory garden By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Students and staff from River Valley School in Lemont were presented a $2,000 grant for their living laboratory garden during the Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education meeting Wednesday. Archer Daniels Midland Company, the parent company of American River Transport Company in Lemont, made the donation to the School District 113A Education Foundation. River Valley teacher Sonya Raymond and a group of students were surprised with a giant check during the meeting. The students were on hand to give the board an update on the garden. According to an Education Foundation news release, the grant money will be used to purchase supplies for a garden being built in the River Valley courtyard. River Valley students, along with some Lemont Boy Scouts working on their Eagle Scout projects, have built a garden, which includes several garden beds, a topiary, insect house and benches.
The students already have harvested crops, including squash, peppers, onions, tomatoes and cucumbers. In other district news, district administration is advising the board to approve making up the three school days it recently cancelled at the end of the school year. Superintendent Courtney Orzel said the district had sent out a survey to parents and staff members, asking whether they would prefer to make up some of the days by having class on Presidents Day, Feb. 15, or the Friday before spring break, April 3. She said that of the 719 parents surveyed, 45 percent said they would prefer to have school on those two dates. However, a significant number of the staff said they would not be able to attend that day because of plans they had made, she said. Ultimately, it was decided it was too short of notice to ask the staff to come in on these scheduled off-days, she said. She advised the board to look into scheduling these dates as possible makeup days for the next school year and advising the staff in advance of that possibility.

No more one-way streets in Springfield On Jan. 14, the new 99th Illinois General Assembly was sworn into office and I was re-elected House Republican Leader. During my acceptance speech, I told a story about my first evening in Springfield back in 1995 and how I got lost driving around the city after getting turned around by all of the one-way streets. One-way streets seem to be the grid on which Springfield COMMUNITY was designed. Having served VOICE in the General Assembly on Jim and off for almost 18 years, Durkin not much has changed. I still get frustrated and confused by the one-way streets and the one-party approach to solving our most pressing issues. Voters said with the November election that they no longer want state government to move in one direction. By electing Bruce Rauner as governor, the voters effectively broke up the monopoly in state government. After more than a decade of one-party rule, Illinois now will be operating under a divided government, which means that both parties will have to work together. The issues facing Illinois are profound, deep and real. They are not Republican nor are they Democratic. Illinois continues to suffer from the highest unemployment in the Midwest and stagnant job growth. We lost a net population of nearly 95,000 residents in 2014 alone. Our backlog of unpaid bills which currently sits at $6 billion is expected to climb, and we have the worst unfunded pension liability in the nation. While these challenges facing Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly are monumental, they are not insurmountable. With the inauguration of Gov. Rauner and a new Illinois General Assembly this past week in Springfield, there was optimism all around. Optimism not felt in a very long time. For the first time as House Republican Leader, I attended a meeting between the four legislative leaders and the governor. We had a good discussion about the major issues facing our state. I truly believe if we work with Gov. Rauner and his administration, and I believe we will, the 99th General Assembly will be historic. It’s been my experience that when both parties work together positive things are accomplished. House Republicans and House Democrats have worked together and been successful in the past. Most recently, we worked together to craft and pass legislation to reform our public pension systems and Chicago pension systems, and an emergency infrastructure bill to repair our roads following an unusually harsh winter. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to come together to provide a solid foundation to pursue the American dream in the Land of Lincoln.

Congratulations to all the folks who made the Lemont Park District CORE Fitness and Aquatics Complex’s five years possible. The rec center recently marked its fifth anniversary. The CORE is an asset to the community, and hopefully, its five years thus far are just a fraction of the impact it will make here in Lemont. Local political races are taking shape. I’d like to respond to the overpass/ underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.
Ridiculous complaints It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents. This section

Technology not required A few years ago, The New York Times had an article reporting that most of the schools in the Silicon Valley area did not allow any electronic devices in the classroom and encouraged the parents not to let their children to use them at home. The students actually learned how to add, subtract, multiply, etc., and use their brain and memory. When educated and it was needed, the students could learn how to use a calculator or computer in a few hours or less. If this were true here you might be able to find a young checkout server in a store that could actually make change without using the cash register.

Kudos to the person who wrote that “reminder” to keep pets inside. If you have a pet, it is indeed a “member of the family” and should be treated as such. At the very least, they should be treated right. This means they live inside, have proper food and vet care. They should be housed inside during hot weather as well as cold weather and rainy weather. In other words, they need to live inside just as their “pawrents” do. People who cannot or won’t do this should not have pets.

We have 462 students in Preschool through 8th Grade, and with the introduction of our new All-Day Kindergarten, we expect to fill our two Kindergarten classes next fall. Lemont sophomore P.J. Pipes brings the ball down court Jan 9 in a home game against Eisenhower.
Pipes not enough for Lemont as Indians fall to Joliet Central By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – P.J. Pipes did everything he could to propel Lemont to a victory Monday at the MLK Day of Hoops but it was host Joliet Central that made the plays down the stretch in a 54-42 win. Coming off the bench, Darius Strokes knocked down two 3-pointers for the Steelmen in the first minute and 40 seconds of the fourth quarter to help break open a tight game. Neither side led by more than five points through three quarters, which
ended with the Steelmen on top 30-29. But after Stokes’ second three made it 36-31 Central, the rest of the Steelmen picked up the defense and crashed the boards to put it away. The offensive star of the game was Pipes, a sophomore guard who scored 17 of the Indians’ 22 second-half points and 22 in all. Jack Valone chipped in with eight points for Lemont, who fell to 12-5 on the winter. “If we could have stopped P.J., we could have extended the lead sooner,” said Joliet Central coach Jeff Corcoran. “He just puts his head down and goes to the basket. He’s so strong for a
sophomore. He gets to the rim.” The Steelmen, using their pressure defense, forced 19 Lemont turnovers and limited the Indians to 37.8 percent shooting on 17-of-45. Pipes made 10-of17 shots, including 8-of-10 in the second half. After making 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half, Lemont managed only 2-of-11 from that distance in the second half. The Indians returns to South Suburban Blue conference play tonight when they travel to take on Hillcrest at 8:30 p.m. A league matchup at Oak Forest follows on Jan. 30.

Lemont’s program has enjoyed unparalleled success in the South Suburban Conference since its inception in 2006. Lemont has won the Presidents’ Cup, the SSC’s all-sports trophy, five times in eight years. Lemont’s facilities have improved during Young’s tenure. He helped develop the LHS Sports Complex, which serves the school’s baseball, soccer and softball programs. He directed the football stadium, wrestling room and locker room renovations. Young guided the development of the Lemont High School Athletic Hall of Fame, which debuted in 2004 and recently welcomed its 10th induction class. He facilitated the implementation of the Young Hearts for Life cardiac screenings program, which provided free testing for more than 1,000 students combined in 2012 and 2014.
