LEMONT – 2013 yielded a great deal of news for Lemont, and Suburban Life was able to capture much of it in photographs. The village celebrated annual traditions, such as Heritage Fest and Hometown Holiday, witnessed phenomenons of nature, from floods to fires, and even produced a viral YouTube star. With the new year just around the corner, Suburban Life takes a look back at 2013 in Lemont. Kate Kasper, 8, of Lemont, was all smiles while riding the zip line July 13 at Lemont’s Heritage Fest.

D-113A approves $750,000 technology upgrade plan By DAN FARNHAM []Xie_Xd7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education unanimously passed a $750,578 technology upgrade plan with Sentinel Technologies, Inc. during its Dec. 18 meeting. The district also received an Illinois State Board of Education School Technology Revolving Loan for $365,550 to purchase computers for staff and students, according to Assistant Superintendent Mary Gricus. The upgrades, which are scheduled to be completed before the beginning of next school year, allow for increased wireless access in the classrooms, District Technology director Stephen Davis said. Davis said the network will have 10 GB bandwith, which would be capable of handling every student using wireless. The new network should also be more reliable, with more safeguards against system failure, he said. The final proposal included $94,000 more in upgrades than the initial proposal, such as an improved email spam filter, a new wireless security system and new fiberoptic cabling. Board member Patrick Kerrigan, who represented the board when Sentinel made its second proposal, said the need for the upgrades is immediate. “With the spam filter, we’re having issues on a regular basis with that, he said “It’s consistently broken, so we need to fix it. Regarding the fiberoptics,

The current cables are only meant to handle 1 GB. “Think of it as plumbing, he said. “You need to have enough flow through the drain to have enough traffic. Davis said the fiberoptics will give the district the ability to further upgrade its network in the future. The wireless security system is something the district will need when it starts using its new computers, Kerrigan said. According to the meeting agenda, the district has allotted $359,098 for technology upgrades in 2013-14. To finance the project, the district received a preliminary pricing on a three year lease for a $650,000 expenditure that would include an annual payment of about $228,000, according to Business Manager Barbara Germany.

LEMONT – Ken Novak has seen the Lemont Park District grow from an almost rural district to one with 22 parks and several expanded buildings. “I never envisioned it to be this large while I’m still here,” he said. Novak, Lemont Park District’s risk manager and former superintendent of parks, is retiring after 31 years with the district. He said he feels happy going into retirement. “You look at the 31 years I’ve been here and my involvement with the community,” he said. “You realize you’ve pretty much reached the peak of what you can do and now it’s somebody else’s turn.” With the exception of three years in Indiana, Novak has been a lifelong Lemont resident. He started with the Park District as a part-time maintenance worker in 1982, doing janitorial work. He said he was a single father who had recently moved back to Lemont and took

DIXON – Shaw Media announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire the assets of The Herald-News in Joliet from Sun-Times Media. The purchase is expected to close during the first week of January. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Herald-News has been serving Joliet, Will County and Grundy County communities for more than 150 years and will continue as part of Shaw Media’s newspaper group. “We are excited to bring The Herald-News into our
established, and growing, family-owned media portfolio,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We expect to maintain the storied tradition of serving the Joliet region with a high-quality, community-oriented newspaper.” “We have found a great buyer for The Herald-News in Shaw Media,” said Tim Knight, president of SunTimes Media. “This sale will allow the Sun-Times to focus its resources on transforming its core products.” Shaw Media, based in Dixon, is the third oldest continuously owned and operated

LEMONT – The Lemont Fire Protection District has reached an agreement with Orland Central Dispatch, which will provide its emergency dispatch services. The district’s Board of Trustees approved the move during its Dec. 19 meeting. The fire protection district will eliminate its three fulltime and six part-time dispatchers working in Lemont. Fire Chief George Rimbo said the decision ultimately came down to cost effectiveness. “We came to the conclusion we were paying a lot of money for something we could do for a lot less,” he said. Rimbo said the district lost some of the revenue used to pay for the dispatchers because of a state court decision requiring fire districts to not be in the fire alarm monitoring business. He said the average call taken in Lemont costs $116, whereas receiving the calls at Orland Central would cost $39. Keeping the dispatchers in Lemont would also require $225,000 in system updates, he said. Rimbo said the system at Orland Central will be an upgrade over what Lemont currently uses. The Geographic Information System technology quickly determines where the closest fire engine and ambulance are to the incident area, he said. Rimbo said the target date to make the transition is April 1. The dispatchers are not members of Lemont Professional Firefighters Local 3966. Rimbo said he has not heard much concern from the firefighters about the change. “They just want to know what’s going on at the end of the day,” he said.

Happy New Year from Lemont Park District What a fantastic year 2013 has been! Even though it seemed to zip by, so many great events and special moments occurred. In February, the Lemont Dolphins Swim Team hosted the 2012-13 Conference Championship at The Lemont Park District CORE Fitness & Aquatics Complex. Swimmers ranging between the ages of 6 to 18 participated in this conference. Six teams, including more than 300 swimmers, plus hundreds of guests and spectators flocked to The CORE for this exciting event. We were so pleased the Dolphins placed second after COMMUNITY just moving up from a lower VOICE division. It was a great day! Louise During the winter months, Egofske the Lemont Park District conducted a comprehensive community needs assessment facilitated by our research partner – the University of St. Francis Solutions Resource Center. As part of the process, the public was invited to share their comments and suggestions on parks and recreation services and facilities through two different opportunities – focus group meetings and a community-wide survey. We received so much positive feedback, along with some great constructive suggestions. The exercise was a success and the results are a valued asset as we move forward implementing the strategic plan. Centennial Aquatic Center really heated up this summer with the two pool heaters that were installed in May. Another highlight was the completion of the new and improved entranceway at Centennial Campus. Funded primarily by a $400,000 Safe Routes to School federal grant administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation in cooperation with the village of Lemont, this project makes for a safer campus. The new main thoroughfare improves overall driving conditions and solves a flooding issue that used to occur after heavy rains. In addition to the traffic calming, the paved sidewalks and the reconfiguration of the outdoor walking path increase safety measures for pedestrians. More than 300 guests, including Virginia Reed’s two daughters, gathered in August as we paid tribute to the past and celebrated the future at the rededication of the new Virginia Reed Park. At the Lemont Park Foundation Golf Outing in September, raised more than $9,000 through the generosity of our community businesses, residents, CORE members and district vendors. This event helps support the foundation’s Helping Hand Award initiative that funds programming for families in need. I wish you and your families a spectacular holiday season and a very safe and fun-filled 2014.

Tracey and Nicholas Splitt compete for a prize at this year’s annual Keepataw Days on Aug. 31 in Lemont. With the nonprofit that organizes the event disbanding, the future of the festival is uncertain.
With the nonprofit that organizes Lemont’s annual Keepataw Days disbanding because of financial limitations, the future of the 65-year-old festival has been called into question. It would be a shame to lose this village tradition and we hope a solution can be reached to save the event. The Lemont Village Board will vote next month on preliminary approval of a 19-house development plan on the 6.5-acre property east of Mayfair Estates near Interstate 355 and 127th Street. If approved, the project would be the first of its size built in Lemont in five years. We’re glad to see this encouraging sign of growth in the village.

Local theater major goes onstage with Make-A-Wish By DAN FARNHAM []Xie_Xd7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – Lemont resident Ken Schumacher, a freshman theater technology major at Northern Illinois University, is getting a rare behind-the-scenes look at the professional theater world through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. First, he is participating as an extra in Goodman Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol” today. Next month, he will experience the main part of his wish when he goes to Broadway for a backstage tour. Schumacher said he was diagnosed in 2006 with a genetic disorder that causes his heart to give out when he experiences adrenaline. He said he has been able to treat the condition so he can live a normal life. Schumacher, who also worked with the theater crew at Lemont High School, received a technical tour of “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 20

Today will be his first time performing. “It’s going to be really cool to be on the stage for once,” he said. As an added bonus, retired Chicago Bears star Brian Urlacher will also be onstage as part of the wish. Schumacher said Urlacher’s appearance was not something he asked for or expected. “I was kind of in shock because (Urlacher) is a famous guy and I am kind of a football fan,” he said.

Target shoppers who suspect unauthorized activity on their credit or debit cards should contact the corporation, according to a news release from the company. Local Target stores include 601 S. County Farm Road in Wheaton; 28201 Diehl Road in Warrenville; and 175 W. Army Trail Road in Glendale Heights. Shoppers can call Target at 866-852-8680. The Minneapolis-based corporation confirmed Dec. 19 that up to 40 million credit and debit cards could be at risk after a security breach that started last month, the release said. The national retail giant is investigating the hack, which reportedly began on Black Friday on Nov. 29 and extended to Dec. 15, the company is re-
porting. Target is reportedly working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue. “Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence,” Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Target said in the release. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.” Target alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the breach, according to the company. The breach reportedly involved almost all Target stores in the United States, according to media reports.

Restaurant reviews
Old Town Pour House comes to Oak Brook OAK BROOK – Old Town Pour House proclaims beer a staple of life. The restaurant-bar backs that up once you step inside the new Oak Brook eatery. Nestled in an expansive storefront underneath Neiman Marcus inside the upscale Oakbrook Center, Old Town Pour House gives shoppers a cozy wind-down over a cold brew and American cuisine. The restaurant opened on the east side of the shopping mall in late November, making it Old Town Pour House’s second location, as the owners ventured west from their popular Chicago location. The exterior screams modern with its bold signage and contemporary outdoor fireplaces. Inside, it’s the same story, with a mix of tables and booths surrounding a bar with a good number of flat-screens. A companion and I dined at Pour House on a recent holiday shopping night. Picking up the menu, we discovered that beer selections practically outnumber food options three to one – a good thing in my book. From ciders to lagers to wheats, there are plenty of unique craft selections to pair with your meals. The full bar boasts about 90 taps. My date and I kicked off the experience with a pair of tasty appetizers – the Firecracker Rolls under the “Bar Bites” portion of the menu, and the Truffle Mac N Cheese under “Shareables.” Our waitperson assured us both sections of the menu are essentially shared plates. The Firecracker Rolls are a spicy mix of Cajun chicken, a vegetable medley and avocado cream. It’s definitely a spicy dish – have a beverage handy – but the avocado cream was a nice cool-down. The Truffle Mac N Cheese was the favorite dish of the night at our table. With Parmesan breadcrumbs and black truffle, accented by smoked bacon tidbits, it was anything

Old Town Pour House has been making a splash on the dining scene since opening in late November in Oakbrook Center under Neiman Marcus. but bland. I suggest it as a must-have. For our entrees, my date, readying for some post-meal shopping, opted light for the Pour House Chopped Salad. The salad is a fresh-made combo of marinated grilled chicken, romaine lettuce and a host of other ingredients. The sweet-and-sour tarragon dressing was a great touch; you may want to ask for extra. I opted for the Pour House Burger. The Angus beef patty was topped with aged white cheddar and a pair of beer-battered onion rings on a Portuguese bun. It was a solid burger complemented nicely with olive-oil-parsley fries. Other menu options extend to five additional salad selections, including the Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad and the BBQ Smoked Chicken Salad, a trio of soups and five dinner entrees ranging from Miller Farms Chicken to Cedar River Strip.

The hearty Pour House Burger features Angus beef topped with aged white cheddar and beer-battered onion rings on a Portuguese bun. A major section of the menu covers Old Town Pour House’s nine sandwich selections, which include BBQ Pulled Pork, Lobster Roll and Fish Tacos. Pour House makes suggested beer pairings with each
menu item, and the kitchen stays open late into the evening.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT HUBARKUSH.COM
Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center? Hub Arkush This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel. My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake. Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all. With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James
Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps, even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for. If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them. Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day. But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you. The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing quarterback sacks. There, it makes a
Therma Tru Doors
difference who’s under center. Rodgers has thrown four interceptions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts. Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks. With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way. Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best outing of the year versus Atlanta in
Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day. After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run. Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often. That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears.

Fantasy Dream Team
(Stats through Sunday) Quarterback: Peyton Manning; 399 fantasy points, 51 touchdown passes, 5,211 passing yards, one rushing touchdown. Running back: Jamaal Charles; 298 fantasy points, 1,289 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, 693 receiving yards, seven touchdown receptions. Running back: LeSean McCoy; 245 fantasy points, 1,476 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, 536 receiving yards, one touchdown reception.
Wide receiver: Josh Gordon; 218 fantasy points, 80 receptions, 1,564 receiving yards, nine touchdown receptions. Wide receiver: Calvin Johnson; 217 fantasy points, 84 receptions, 1,492 receiving yards, 12 touchdown receptions. Tight end: Jimmy Graham; 200 fantasy points, 81 receptions, 1,144 receiving yards, 15 touchdown receptions. Flex player: Matt Forte; 222 fantasy points, 1,229 rushing yards, seven rushing touch-
downs, 547 receiving yards, two touchdown receptions. Kicker: Stephen Gostkowski; 34 of 37 fields goals (long of 54 yards) 42 extra points. Defense: Kansas City; 147 fantasy points, 278 points allowed, 11 defense/special team touchdowns. Of course, the Dream Team is simply that – a dream. One franchise could not have drafted Charles, McCoy, Johnson and Forte, regardless of league size. However, an extremely shrewd owner might have been able to swing Manning, Charles, Gordon, Gostkowski and Kansas City in a draft. Any fantasy team with those five players on its roster is probably sporting some hardware right now.

In a perfect world, you have been crowned as your league’s fantasy football champion. More likely, however, it’s wait until next year. In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while. If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.
This week, we recognize the best 2013 fantasy players with a Fantasy Dream Team and an All-First-Round Team (the top 12 fantasy players, regardless of position).

Shootout invite proves Lemont’s progression By SCOTT SCHMID jjZ_d`[7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – The obvious downside from Saturday’s was the fact that the Lemont boys basketball team walked away from the Crete-Monee shootout with a loss. But just being invited to an event like that shows how far the Indians’ program has come in a short amount of time. “It shows where we are at as a program,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said, Bloom 67 “and how Lemont 55 people look at us and evLemont top erything performer we bring as far as the quality of our program and the support we get from the community.” In the game itself, Lemont fell 67-55 to Bloom. “We came out a little slow and didn’t match their tempo or intensity,” Runaas said. “We were down 10 after one quarter and that’s how it pretty much stayed after that. “Obviously, you don’t want to lose, you don’t schedule games with the intent to lose. But I like the fact that this game comes when it does on the schedule. It is a reminder of the quality of teams that are out there. Bloom is on par with some of the teams in our conference like Hillcrest and Richards.” Mike Wisz had 18 points in the defeat. The Indians were coming off a 47-42 win over Evergreen Park in a South Suburban Conference matchup on Dec. 19. Ethan Chester totaled 18 points and seven rebounds and Wisz finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the conference win. “It is always good to get a
