Village refining business licensing process, working with new bank By DAN FARNHAM []Xie_Xd7 j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – As has been the pattern for the past couple of meetings, there was plenty of public discussion but no new information on the Lemont Sports Complex during the Lemont Village Board meeting on Monday. However, the board did discuss and take action on some other issues:

1. Village to update business licensing policies

Village staff members pre-

sented changes to Title V of the Village Code, which covers various forms of business licenses issued by the village. While the changes are meant to simplify the process and get rid of some unnecessary regulations, the village will be enforcing the licensing requirements more stringently. “There are going to be a lot of businesses that have never gotten a notice that they needed a business license,” Village Administrator George Schafer said. The building is currently zoned for mixed use, with commercial space on the first floor and residential space on the second and third floors. Perfect Mulch Products occupies the front of the first floor, with the back vacant. According to the board agenda, Savarino said the rear space has traditionally been used for storage and is not ideal for a business because of a lack of visibility. []Xie_Xd7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – Not many people can beat the Oscar party experience of Sue Susz of Lemont. Susz, along with her husband, Glenn, got to mingle with TV and movie stars in Los Angeles during the weekend of the Academy Awards thanks to Say YES to Hope, an organization for people dealing with liver tumors. This was the second awards show for the couple in the past year, having attended the Emmys in September. Susz said she was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in January 2010. It then spread to her liver and lungs. She has gone through a steady regiment of treatments and currently has chemotherapy sessions every two weeks. Susz, who is a licensed nurse, said she is amazed that she and others have survived as long as they have with this type of cancer. She said she

Susz said she met Say YES to Hope founder Suzanne Lindley, a 15-year colon cancer survivor, at a symposium. Lindley invited Sue and Glenn to be part of a group of 11 cancer survivors and their

Susz said the group stayed in a mansion in Redondo Beach, got hair and makeup done by professionals and wore gowns by designer Dalia MacPhee to attend the Night of 100 Stars Oscar viewing party and a rooftop after party. She said she met several celebrities during the parties. One that she had to immediately tell her daughter about was James Pickens Jr., who portrays Dr. Richard Webber

on “Grey’s Anatomy.” “My daughter’s religious with that [show],” she said. “So when I met him, I texted a picture of him right away. My daughter was like, ‘Oh my God.’ ” Glenn Susz said another special moment was seeing some of the participants at the Oscars wearing the Say YES to Hope wristbands they had given them during the Gifting Suites event on Saturday. Glenn Susz said he enjoyed watching the group of cancer survivors go through the weekend together. “The group was really special,” he said. “It’s really nice to spend time with them because they’re all in the same boat.” Sue Susz said going to Los Angeles for the Oscars and Emmys has been an unbelievable experience. “That was not on my bucket list,” she said. “You don’t write Oscars or Emmys on your bucket list because you think it’s unattainable.”

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Lemont Center for Arts honors Mount Assisi artists By DAN FARNHAM []Xie_Xd7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – Mount Assisi Academy students are getting their first chance to be showcased at the Lemont Center for the Arts in what is billed as the school’s Farewell Art Exhibit. The ongoing exhibit features about 50 students from all grade levels displaying artwork in a variety of media, such as sculpture, drawings and paintings. Mount Assisi art teacher Michelle Pomierski said the exhibit was scheduled last year, before the all-girls Catholic high school announced its closing this January. “This was the first time we were invited to do it,” she said. “In the past we would just do exhibits within the school.” Pomierski said the Lemont center exhibit has been a new experience for the students. “It’s a professional showing,” she said. “They’re not used to that.” The center has strong ties with Mount Assisi. Carla Cardona-Tapia, the center’s school liaison and an art teacher, is a recent alumna. Artistic director Mona Parry is an alumna, as well as both of her daughters. “It’s great to see MAA art showcased at the Lemont Cen-

OPINIONS LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: What’s your favorite part of St. Patrick’s Day? 45 PERCENT: Corned beef, potatoes and soda bread 41 PERCENT: Nothing, I’m staying home 7 PERCENT: Green beer 7 PERCENT: Parades

Communication key at Lemont Park District One thing is certain, and that is the Lemont Park District’s commitment to the agency’s values. I’m honored to be part of an organization that holds these fundamental characteristics near and dear to all operations. These values – Valued Community; Accountability & Fiscal Responsibility; Lasting Partnerships; Ultimate Guest Services; Exceptional Communication; and Safety First – serve as the framework to the District’s longand short-term goals. I am enjoying incorporatCOMMUNITY ing the park district’s values VOICE in day-to-day tasks but have Kim become very acquainted with Passini Exceptional Communication. Both internal and external communication is key at the Park District. Internally, the district has various committees such as Guest Services and Safety that assist colleagues in communicating essential matters at hand. Also, district employees make every effort to exercise concise and prompt communication between one another, which provides for an extremely productive and positive work environment. External communications thrive at the Park District. Whether staff members are meeting with other Lemont agencies to collaborate on events or “user group” meetings are taking place to finalize field allocations, clear and consistent communication with affiliates is crucial. Connecting with the community of Lemont is always at the forefront of district priorities. Last year, we launched two “focus” group meetings, one general “Recreation” and the other geared toward the senior population. These meetings take place on a seasonal basis here at the Park District for the purpose of gaining community input for programming and special events. Please be on the lookout in the next Memory Maker program guide for the upcoming meeting dates and times; we’d love to see you there. The Park District’s 2013 Strategic Planning process also included several key initiative regarding communicating with Lemont residents. Community Focus Groups meetings were held and a comprehensive survey was conducted. We were so pleased to gather incredibly useful information through these avenues. Both constructive and complimentary, this data has helped us decipher both long- and short-term goals. Survey results can be found online at www.lemontparkdistrict.org. Sunshine and warmer weather are right around the corner along with some great program opportunities and special events. You can find out more information in the Lemont Park District Summer Memory Maker, coming to your mailbox at the end of April.

THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: Will you cast a vote on March 18? Vote online at mysuburbanlife.com. Lemont High School students Conner Brandt (from left) and Connor Koehler sell their Lemontopoly game boards to Lemont Chamber members, Lemont Township’s Elizabeth Ganta at the State of the Village address March 5. <i`ZX 9\ejfe Æ \Y\ejfe7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd

Thumbs up to Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves, whose State of the village address on March 5 was a refreshing mix of both the attributes and the challenges facing Lemont. Some leaders use these speeches as glorified campaign events, so kudos to the mayor for not sugarcoating some of the difficulties in a community that has many more positives than negatives. Speaking of positives, one of the great things Mayor Reaves pointed out in his speech was the Lemontopoly project from the Lemont High School Junior Achievement organization. A spin on the classic Monopoly, the game features local businesses and locations. A portion of the proceeds from the game will go toward a local charity. You can pre-order the game at www.lemontopoly.com.

By NATHAN LURZ ecliq7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd As candidates were called to the stage for the final debate before the Republican gubernatorial primary, one podium remained empty: that of Bruce Rauner. For the third of four recent debates, the candidate pegged by many as the frontrunner for the March 18 election was notably absent, this time on March 6 at Benedictine University in Lisle. Nonetheless, Rauner’s presence was felt, as he was the focus of several responses from state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and state senators Bill Brady, R – Bloomington, and Kirk Dillard, R – Hinsdale, during the evening. “The truth of the matter is, what’s really going to count in this Republican primary, is going to be who are the men who are standing before the hot, searing spotlights right here in this arena,” Rutherford said. “Who are the candidates that are out there, pressing the flesh, going around as the three of us have done here tonight and talk to you and look you in the eye?” Brady said Rauner was “dangerous” and an unknown who has avoided questions from the public. Dillard called him the “ultimate insider” for his past campaign involvement and donations and said his lack of experience is not what Illinois needs right now. The two, who have been fighting for second in recent polls, hammered one another throughout. Brady said Dillard was “unelectable” due to his history as a lobbyist, senator and alleged supporter of President Barack Obama, claiming he was a proven candidate who could bring the base. “I’ve been tested and vetted with over $5 million in negative ads,” Brady said. “Yes, I lost by a few thousand votes and Pat Quinn had to spend $50 million of taxpayer money to have a 3 percent higher turnout in Chicago than the rest of the state, but I won 98 of 102 counties.

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s a base we can build on.” Dillard countered, saying Brady had already proven it wasn’t. “You know, also, Bill, you were the guy who ran against Pat Quinn, who had an approval rating of 28 percent – 28 percent – on election day and you couldn’t beat him,” Dillard said. “So not everybody can beat Pat Quinn ... you had your chance, Bill. You muffed it and you blew it.” Rutherford was largely spared the sparring during the two-hour debate. “Whoever selected the stage set-up to put me in the middle – it was probably a very good choice,” he said, of his podium between the two senators.

BOLINGBROOK – Cellphone towers are down, as is the internet. Land lines don’t work either. Communication, as we have utilized it throughout the past decade, ceases to exist. Luckily for local residents, there is a group of communicators prepared for the above doomsday scenario, a team of operators that when all else fails is ready to get the word out. They’re the Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society, and although their club name implies they’re amateurs, the club members’ contributions to the community are big. The society is a club of about 50 Ham radio operators from the Bolingbrook area – from Joliet to Westmont to Oswego – who gather for monthly meetings, offer an annual Field Day to promote their craft to the community and cultivate friendships among members with common interests. But, most importantly, BARS is a go-to source during severe weather events, as members double as trained weather spotters, who, upon sighting strong winds, hail or funnel clouds, use Ham radio’s wireless communications technology to notify the National Weather Service. The scenario where all standard communications can fail is very real, according to BARS club president Scott Hagner. “Ham radio doesn’t rely on someone else’s infrastructure to communicate,” Hagner explained. “When tornadoes hit, cellphone towers can go down. Power can go out, so can land lines. “When all else fails – and technology has failed and will fail – there’s Ham.” Ham radio operators use their own equipment to transmit and receive radio signals. When mobile, they can use handheld devices. When at a base or a station, they use larger equipment. BARS also assists the community by operating emergency and security communications during local events, such as the Pathways Parade, the

Another club member, Will Sperling, has been operating Ham radio for 46 years. A now retired 35-year veteran of the Woodridge Police Department, Sperling knows the importance of the roles BARS plays in local emergency communications. “Hams are always there whenever the chips are down,” he said. Now a security officer at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, the 61-year-old Westmont resident said he likes the service aspect of the Bolingbrook club. “I am very community-oriented,” he said. “There are probably 100 other [Ham radio clubs] in the metro Chicago area, but I am not sure any are as service-oriented as we are.” Hagner said the club’s 50 members range from men and women in their 20s to their 70s. Most are in their 50s, he said. The club is always open to new members. Membership is $25 annually. “You can start out for about $100 and that will get you a book, walkie-talkie and the test,” Hagner said. Ham radio operators are required to pass a 35-question test before being able to operate the equipment. “We have people from all walks of life – doctors, cops, lawyers, teachers, preachers. We all love the hobby,” Hagner added.

hree non-profit, Chicago area senior services organizations recently joined forces to create PrimeLife Home Improvement, the first Chicago area home improvement company aimed at helping seniors live comfortably and safely in their own homes – where studies show they want to stay. AARP reports nearly 90 percent of seniors over age 65 want to remain home as long as possible instead of moving to a nursing or retirement home. Yet those who do often fall victim to scam artists who offer to perform home repairs but then take the money and disappear, or worse, commit violent acts. PrimeLife hires only the most trustworthy,

reliable and skilled contractors. All hires are required to enroll in sensitivity and customer service training specific to working with the senior population. In addition, all contractors employed by PrimeLife Home Improvement complete rigorous drug testing and criminal background checks. PrimeLife also carries greater insurance and liability coverage than other home improvement providers. Chosen to lead PrimeLife Home Improvement is 46 year-old industry veteran Chris Roller, who has over 25 years of experience and an interest in working for a mission-driven company and giving back to the community. Roller started out as a carpenter and cabinet maker while

working his way through college. He went on to work in project management roles for builders Cambridge Homes and Cherrington Design & Building, and also owned his own building and design firm. Roller has worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity. “Many older adults have been living in their homes a really long time. We just completed work for a 93 year-old living in the home where she was born,” Roller adds, “That requires a special approach.” PrimeLife Home Improvement offers estimates for projects of any size, with absolutely no obligation. New survey finds the top 10 fittest baby boomer cities By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

I

n the past, older Americans may have accepted weight gain and reduced mobility as part of aging, but not so for baby boomers. As part of the Fit After 50 campaign, the American Physical Therapy Association and MoveForwardPT.com named the Top 10 Fittest Baby Boomer Cities in America. Where does your city fall? The survey “examined the top 50 metropolitan areas in the U.S. to determine which cities were best suited to helping baby boomers stay healthy and fit as they age,” said Erin Wendel, senior media relations specialist with the American Physical Therapy Association. Criteria included life expectancy, cardiovascular health and stress levels of boomers, as well as local health care and fitness resources. The fittest cities are: 1. San Jose, Calif. 2. Minneapolis 3. San Francisco 4. Denver 5. Boston 6. Salt Lake City 7. Washington, D.C. 8. Seattle 9. San Diego 10. Raleigh, N.C. It seems where you live really can affect your health. “Boomers who live in the fittest baby boomer cities have access to a variety of resources that can have a distinct impact on their health, but they only make a difference if they are used,” said Wendel. The survey found significant differences between the fittest and least fit cities -- Louisville, Ky., ranked No. 50. “The largest differences we saw between one and 50 were the percentage of people diagnosed with hypertension (47.3 percent in San Jose and 63.4 percent in Louisville, a difference of more than 16 percent); life expectancy (82.48 years in San Jose and 77.03 years in Louisville, a difference of more than five years); and the percentage of people ages 50-65 with health insurance (91.8 percent in San Jose and 85.1 percent in Louisville, a difference of 6.7 percent),” Wendel said. The fittest cities allow boomers the opportunity to keep moving as they age. “Parks, gyms and mass transit options in a city offer the opportunity for baby boomers to stay in motion, which physical therapists will tell you is the best way to stay young and fit,” Wendel said. The survey found some surprises as well. “We were a bit surprised by some of the cities in the top 10. We thought for sure we’d see one to two cities in Florida, due to the retirement population there, but we were wrong,” Wendel said. “When you consider baby boomers are redefining what it means to age and are typically still working and leading active, healthy lifestyles, and when you examine all of the factors that played a role in determining the list, the top 10 cities make sense.”

Is Your Thyroid Working Right? Natural Solutions for Your Thyroid

10 to 1

you know someone who has a thyroid problem. Thyroid problems are often misdiagnosed and mis-treated...and women are affected most. This may sound familiar. Your labs come back “Normal” and yet you still feel tired, achy, cold, depressed and mentally sluggish. You may even be on thyroid hormone replacement and still have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Worst of all it’s difficult to get anyone to listen to you. So now what do you do? For the last four years, Dr. Susan Kelenyi, of Glen Ellyn, IL, has been working almost exclusively with women who suffer from thyroid symptoms yet their lab tests are normal. “My practice consists mainly of women who have no where else to go. They are tired, frustrated, don’t sleep well, and overweight”, she says “What most doctors don’t understand is that close to 90% of thyroid cases are actually autoimmune in nature. The condition is called Hashimoto’s Disease and it is often missed in diagnosis.” Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition (your immune system actually destroys your thyroid gland). Medical treatment often ignores the underlying immune problem and simply replaces thyroid hormone by tracking TSH levels. According to Dr. Kelenyi, this is a shortsighted approach. “Too many people still have ongoing symptoms in spite of normal TSH levels. Why? Because the underlying immune problem is not being addressed. There is no method in the medicine today that addresses Hashimoto’s other than hormone replacement for your thyroid. This is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. As a chiropractor with an advanced specialty in Functional Medicine and clinical nutrition, she is able to perform specific metabolic tests to determine what areas of the body are deficient or over reacting. Many of these tests could be performed by their MD but they don’t perform them. “The problem is two-fold, says Kelenyi. “First, the insurance companies don’t typically pay for many of the tests and secondly, the medical model doesn’t support the answers we get from many of the tests. For example, we look at women’s adrenal (stress) glands with a salivary test and supplement with powerful botanicals in order to restore function. There are currently no drugs that help the adrenals work better.” Why is a chiropractor treating thyroid disease? Dr. Kelenyi emphasizes that she is not treating the disease. “That’s what their MD is for.” she says. “The medications can be life savers and women should not take themselves off them. It’s my job to help modulate the thyroid gland and their immune system nutritionally through a Functional Medicine approach. Functional Medicine includes a lab based approach, integrating natural therapies that include lifestyle changes, to address a wide variety of chronic health problems. What is it that Dr. Kelenyi is doing differently than your local endocrinologist? She says that food is a big part of it. She finds that gluten can be a detrimental food for women with thyroid disease. “We now know there are proteins in gluten that cause inflammation in people with thyroid disease. But more importantly there are many other foods that can act like gluten in causing inflammation. We test for those foods with very accurate testing and can tell you what you should or should not be eating.” Our solutions are non-drug, non surgical approaches, that are research based and based on prior clinical success. She says it is a very rewarding way of practicing. “I am one of only 400 chiropractors in the nation addressing imbalances in this manner, so we get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

Good Sam among the top 100 hospitals again SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital was named one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation March 3, as well as a winner of the Crystal Award for making the list five times. Good Samaritan Hospital is one of nine hospitals in Illinois named to the list, published by Truven Health Analytics, formerly the healthcare business of Thomson Reuters. The annual 100 Top Hospitals study evaluates hospitals on overall organization performance, including patient care, operational efficiency and financial stability, according to a press release. It compares hospitals against similar facilities in terms of size and teaching status. Good Samaritan Hospital was among nearly 3,000 short-

term, acute care, non-federal hospitals evaluated by Truven Health, according to the release. Researchers used public information to evaluate performance in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993. The winning hospitals were announced in the current edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. “Employers and payers are increasingly seeking network hospitals that consistently provide demonstrated value – hospitals that deliver higher quality, higher satisfaction and lower cost. The

100 Top Hospitals have been objectively proven to provide high value, and the majority of them have demonstrated yearover-year increased value, as well,” Truven Health Analytics senior vice president of 100 Top Hospitals Programs Jean Chenoweth, as quoted in the release. “The results show 100 Top Hospitals to be strong, well-managed hospitals with consistently high performance. This year, 59 percent of the 2014 100 Top Hospitals were winners last year.” According to the release, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities, more than 165,000 additional lives could be saved. Nearly 90,000 additional patients could be complication-free. The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.

Irritable Bowel, Celiac, Crohn’s or Colitis? Are you afraid to leave your house due to an unpredictable bowel? Have you tried different treatments but continue to suffer? Do you know the essentials for a healthy digestive system? Have you given up and decided to just live with it? The digestive system assimilates food (carbs, fats and proteins) to produce energy. It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inflammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you find the origin of almost all human illness.”

Hi, my name is Dr. Jeffrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. There are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn off oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deficient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deficiency of methyl groups. HCL deficiency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. These probiotics are also part of your immune

system. They play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). This dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inflammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inflammation leads to production of cytokines (inflammatory cells). These cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inflame the brain cells. The brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. This leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inflammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inflammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. The cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inflammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.

Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. These medications may give you symptom relief but have side effects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.

Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. They told me it was likely all in my head. Then I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very confident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.

Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and difficulty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. There is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the effects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.

Bolingbrook a land of opportunity for Cali Girl bakery on a weekend get-away with girlfriends. “He was there for a bachelor party for his best friend. We exchanged phone numbers and that was it. We talked on the phone for a few months then married quickly,” she said. Eventually, Gozum and her husband picked out a house in Bolingbrook to live as a family. Her husband was instrumental in pushing her to pursue her dream. “He just said, ‘Do what you want to do, whatever your passion is, and I will support you,’” she said, reflecting. Cali Girl Cakes specializes in specialty cakes and offers just about every sweet treat in the book: from cookies to scones to bars to brownies

to cupcakes, all made-fromscratch, according to Gozum. She will also serve Caribou Coffee. Her 1,600-square-foot storefront includes a seating area with four cafe tables and a dozen chairs for those who can’t wait until home to satisfy their sweet tooth. When the weather warms, she will add a table outside. Perhaps most important, though, is what’s behind the scenes at the shop. “We have a beatufitul, big kitchen that’s every baker’s dream,” she said. “Two things I wanted for my business were top-notch ingredients and I wanted my staff to be happy – to have an environment where my staff enjoys what they do.”

Gozum currently has two employees: executive pastry chef Sarah McFarland and her daughter, Valerie, who will handle customer service parttime. Gozum said she grew up in a foster home where her foster father taught her to cook and bake. “I would bake for the holidays and give baked foods as gifts for Christmas,” she said. She took baking classes and eventually worked as a lead baker for four years. When asked what she envisions for her business down the road, Gozum insists she’s just focusing on finding success right now. “I have to say – dreams really do come true,” she added.

Alicia Gozum, a California native who moved to Bolingbrook 11 years ago, has opened her Cali Girl Cakes bakery in a storefront at 681 W. Boughton Road. Gozum said she had been eying a business for about six years before finding the “perfect little space.” “When I moved here, I said my dream was always to open some sort of business having to do with parties, pretty stuff and baking,” Gozum said last week, a few days before the

Changarro adds bright notes to Mexican fusion WEST CHICAGO – Celebrating Mexican dishes on its own food pyramid with unexpected fusion twists is Changarro Cocina, a hidden gem in West Chicago well worth seeking out. Like its stylized Aztec bird logo, it has a semi-hidden perch along Route 59 on the overpass above Roosevelt Road, tucked on the west side of a modern commercial building. Inside the minimalist modern space is a tequila bar at the ready for Margaritas, Spanish wines and imported beer. Cocktails regularly are reinvented, and the menu shakes itself up with new specials like the recent duck confit tacos, pairing the French recipe with a Brazilian corn salsa. But friends had recommended the grilled tilapia and guacamole tacos topped with threads of lime-infused red cabbage for a burst of bright flavor. It was delicious, and I’m just hoping the duck will be back on the menu soon for another visit. A Chicago TV spot recently focused on Changarro’s chicken enchilada soup, and I second the recommendation. I split a cup with my dining companion, discovering it to be a richly complex concoction of chicken, garlic, onions, sizzled corn, cheese and lusciously giant slices of ripe avocado in chicken stock flavored with enchilada sauce. It’s just mildly spicy, which suited me to a tee on a snowy night. The casual dining room feels airy with a high, industrial style ceiling, and warm color palette, with one wall accented with a straight line of luchador wrestling masks. In the evening, the tables are linen covered. Our server was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about which dishes are vegetarian. The menu also pinpoints gluten-free items. Launching the meal were complimentary chips and two wonderful salsas, including a creamy salsa verde with great

By SCOTT SCHMID jjZ_d`[7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – For a Lemont boys basketball team, which returned only one starter, reaching the 15-win mark was a notable accomplishment. But that doesn’t mean that head coach Rick Runaas was completely satisfied. “I would say I was mildly pleased,” Runaas said about the recently completely 201314 campaign in which the Indians finished with a 15-13 mark. “We didn’t reach my highest expectations, but fortunately, we didn’t fall to my worst fears.” Runaas was most happy with how his team stuck together while dealing with some injuries and playing against a tough schedule. “I thought that showed at the end of the year in how we played, especially in light of Mike [Wisz] getting hurt,” he said. “It could have been easy to fold our tents with four games remaining, but we did the opposite. There is a satisfaction a coach gets out of seeing his team improve before his eyes. That was good.” Wisz wrapped up an impressive three-year varsity career as the all-time winningest player in program history. “The last three years he has been a part of 62 wins,” the coach said. “He has supreme confidence, but he also knows when he takes a bad shot. But he thinks, actually he knows, that he is going to make the next one.” Rounding out the senior class was Luis Marquez, Ethan Chester, Austen Gumber, David Czupta, Ben Groselak and Grant Mandell. “Luis had a real nice year,” Runaas said. “He led

Something clicked in February, and when you talk about the improvements we made as a team, Luis was most responsible for that. “I’m very grateful for all [the seniors] did. They stuck with it and listened to coaching and always tried to do what they were told.” Lemont will return a group of players who received valuable playing time this winter, including juniors Jack Valone and Ryan Shereck and sophomores Austin Tittle and Rory Cunningham. Freshman PJ Pipes was called up at the end of the year and saw playing time in the postseason. “I think we are looking OK for the future,” Runaas said. “The key thing for us is to work together and work on our games (in the offseason).”

GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEW

‘Pieces are coming together’ for Lemont By SCOTT SCHMID jjZ_d`[7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd LEMONT – A year ago, Lemont’s girls soccer team carried few expectations into a season that ultimately ended with a berth in the Class 2A state semifinals. Now, with eight starters back from a team that won 21 matches in 2013, things have changed a little bit. “Last year we kind of surprised ourselves a little bit,” Lemont coach Rick Prangen said. “We didn’t have any real great expectations, it was more wait and see. This year obviously with a lot of girls coming back, they are putting expectations on themselves, which can be good and bad.” Any talk about the Indians starts with a pair of seniors, Kim Jerantowski and Kelly Fritz. Jerantowski finished with 21 goals and 17 assists a year ago while Fritz posted 16 shutouts in net. Both recently signed with Division I programs, Jerantowski with Northwestern and Fritz with UIC. “Our vocal leader is Kelly Fritz,” Prangen said. “She has stepped into that role and I am very impressed with her leadership. Her commitment to our program is fun to watch. And for Kim, this is her fourth year. She realizes this is her last go-round and she wants to make it special for herself. I want those two players to go out in the manner that they deserve because they have done a lot for our program.” Also back offensively is Aleksandra Mihailovic, who totaled 16 goals and five assists last spring, Savannah Brija (10 goals and two assists), Maddie Bermele (seven goals and two assists) and Lindsey Mazur (five goals and four assists). Ashley Mathews and Lauren Devlin return in front of Fritz. “The pieces are coming together very well,” Prangen said. “There are a couple of spots we’ve got to figure out. But we are definitely a little more experienced and a little faster and stronger. We have to maintain our level and we have to be very consistent.”

Lemont’s Kim Jerantowski dribbles the ball up the field during a game last season. A Northwestern recruit, Jerantowski is one of several returning players looking to lead the Indians back to the state finals. One thing Lemont will be trying to do is make it to state in back-to-back seasons. The Indians have made three appearances since 2009 (2009, 2011 and 2013) but have skipped a year in between each trip. “We are trying to break that this year,” Prangen said. “And if we stay healthy, I think we have a chance to make a run. If people go down [to injury], it gets more difficult.”

LEMONT – As a member of the Lemont dance team, Ciara Athy experienced the thrill of competing in the IHSA state meet on Jan. 31. But that turned out to be just a precursor to the excitement that the senior, and fellow Lemont student Maddi Gould, would be a part of less than a month later. Athy and Gould were members of the Downers Grove Dazzlers synchronized skating team that placed first out of 12 squads at the U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs in late February. The squad had qualified out of the Midwestern Sectional Championships in Hoffman Estates in January, where it finished fourth. “It was a thrill just to make it,” said Athy, who is also a National Honor Society inductee and a senior class officer. “The fact that we placed was unbelievable. We knew that with the technical things we do, we had a pretty good shot [to place] but we never expected to win. We never expected to take home first.” Gould concurred. “Going into Nationals, we knew we had some tough competition,” said Gould, a high honor roll student who is also

a part of the marching band, “but if we skated the best we could we would be able to medal. In the end, we were a full four points ahead of the second place team and guaranteed to leave with a gold medal.” Waiting out the final couple of scores was nerve wrecking. “We skated near the end of the group; we skated 10th,” Athy said. “So we had to wait for the scores of the last two teams before we found out our place. Once they read the scores off, just that moment, it was insane. We were like, did we just do this? All the hard work paid off.” Both Athy and Gould began skating at the age of four. Athy joined the Dazzlers in eighth grade while Gould is in her ninth year with the program. “I really like competing as a group and competing with friends,” Athy said, “as opposed to competing by myself. I’ve always thought it was fun to be a part of the team.” The team, which also includes girls from Downers Grove, Naperville and Bolingbrook, practices together two or three times a week at the Downers Grove Ice Arena with the competition season falling between November and February. Gould will have two years left in the program while Athy is headed to Adrian College in Michigan in the fall.

Lemont coach Traina earns softball award SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – Lemont High School softball coach Chris Traina was recently honored as the Illinois Coaches Association Softball Sectional Coach of the Year. Traina received her honor at the ICA’s annual awards ceremony Feb. 23 in Bloomington. Traina was cited as the 2013 IHSA Nazareth Academy sectional Coach of the Year after

guiding the Indians to a 25-7 record last spring. The Indians captured their second straight South Suburban Conference Blue Chris Traina Division title, after which Traina was tabbed as the SSC Blue Coach of the Year. Lemont won the Queen of Peace regional and lost to eventual state champion Glen-

bard South in the Nazareth Academy sectional championship game. Over seven seasons, Traina has led the Indians to a 16565 record and her teams have reached the 20-win mark six times, including four straight heading into this season. Additionally, her teams have won two conference titles and four regional crowns, and 15 of her players have continued on to play college softball.

LEMONT – One successful weekend of wrestling will hopefully segue into more of the same for Drew Nash and Frankie Montalto. Both wrestlers had successful sectional tournaments last weekend and will wrestle at the Illinois Kids Wrestling Association state finals today and Saturday at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. Nash went 2-1 and placed second at the 89-pound novice (11- to 12-year old) division at last weekend’s IKWF Central Chicago sectional at Mount Carmel High School. Montalto

was also 2-1 and placed second at 122 pounds. Nash improved to 29-16 on the year with 16 pins, while Montalto, a first year wrestler, upped his record to 13-5 on the year with six pins. Several other Lemont Bears wrestlers just missed qualifying for state by finishing fourth at the sectional. Sam Andreotti was fourth in the 74-pound novice level, and Apollo Gothard had the same finish in the 115 novice bracket. Paul McGrath (74-pound senior division) and Terry Kolacki (138-pound senior) were also fourth.
