By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont Village Board approved a contract to remove all of the village’s parkway ash trees during its Monday meeting.

The village will hire Homer Tree Care to remove about 1,500 ash trees at a rate of $205 per tree, with the plan being to take down all the trees before the next winter.

The cost will be $313,650, including interest, paid over three years.

The village will pay $102,000 this year, coming out of its general fund. The village will draw the rest of the money from the capital projects fund, paying $104,000 in 2016 and $107,000 in 2017.

The village paid $60,000 to remove about 300 trees this summer and removed about 200 last year.

The village had initially planned to remove the trees over several years to work within the annual budget. However, Village Administrator George Schafer said the village was concerned about the potential liability from the dead and dying ash trees falling down.

Mayor Brian Reaves has said at previous meetings that another harsh winter could cause more trees to fall.

Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said he hopes Homer Tree can get to work by the end of the week. He said Homer Tree will continue to subdivisions east down McCarthy Road from the subdivision where it left off before heading back west to the remaining subdivisions.

The subdivisions are Fordham Hills, Hirsekorn Ridge, Carriage Ridge, Woodcrest, Old Derby Estates and Hilltop Estates.

ash trees does not include those on private property, which is the responsibility of the property owners.

In other news from the meeting: • The board heard a presentation on the Fiscal 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

A representative with the firm Baker Tilly, who compiled the report, said there were no financial weaknesses that needed to be reported.

“It has been confirmed by outside sources that the village of Lemont is doing the right thing when it comes to financ-

es,” Reaves said.

The report will be available Wednesday on the village website, www.lemont.il.us.

• The new daily parking machines at the Lemont Metra station will be operating starting Oct. 1. Representatives will be at the station to help commuters with questions about the new machines.

Daily rates will increase to $1.50. The machines will take credit cards and cash but will only accept exact change.

Commuters also can pay for parking on their phones using the Passport Parking system.

• Construction on the Stephen Street bridges will begin Monday. The bridges will be closed for about three weeks starting Tuesday.

• The board approved paying Hoppy’s Landscaping $57,250 to convert the Athen Knolls retention pond into a dry retention pond.

• The board approved paying an additional $73,282.61 to complete the Warner Avenue water main project.

Pukula said they had to extend water mains and a storm sewer further than anticipated.

The $502,454.16 project cost is still under budget.

For the grand opening weekend, there will be food trucks from Pizza Via today and OMango on Saturday.

Pawola said they will try to have food trucks every weekend, especially during the first couple of months.

Patrons also will be able to bring in food from local restaurants that deliver.

“We want to sell our beer to the locations that can support

us, that want to bring their food into here,” Ciciora said.

“It’s going to be a nice symbiotic relationship.”

Pollyanna has other events planned, such as a beer and food tasting with Tap House Grill in November or December and brewery tours through the Lemont Park District.

Pawola said he has been working on getting Pollyanna started for more than a year, so it is exciting to see it come to fruition.

“We’re ecstatic,” he said.

“We’re ready to go the full Lemonty. That’s [the name of] our flagship beer, a golden ale.”

LEMONT – After a summer full of construction, the Pollyanna Brewing Co. will have the grand opening of their tasting room from noon to 11 p.m. today at 431 Talcott Ave. Pollyanna was founded

by Brian Pawola, Ed Malner, Ryan Weidner and Paul and Don Ciciora. Pawola is the master brewer, having trained in the Siebel Institute of Technology’s Master Brewer Program.

Though the opening will be the first chance for some to taste Pollyanna’s craft beers, the brewery was active in getting their product out at competitions and festivals during the summer.

Their product has also been served at some local restaurants, such as the Tap House Grill, 3 Corners, Front Street Cantina and Gelsosomo’s.

“We wanted some accounts [at local restaurants] so people here would see us starting,” Paul Ciciora said. “They’re hearing about a brewery. Now, they’re starting to see a brewery. Now, they’re able to taste the brewery.”

Pollyanna brewed three beers this summer using other breweries’ equipment and was finally able to start brewing using their own equipment about three weeks ago.

“It’s been really nice to brew it here because it’s actually our own equipment,” Pawola said. “It’s equipment that I can get a good feel for. I can start getting into a rhythm when it comes to brewing.”

LEMONT – Drawing on his years of experience consulting schools on security issues, Paul Timm of Lemont has written a book titled “School Security: How to Build and Strengthen a School Safety Program.”

Timm, 46, is president of RETA Security, a school security consulting service started by his father in 1984.

He said his business, which he runs out of his home, provides three services: a patented method of school security assessments, training and emergency planning.

“When you are in the school arena, generally there is not a person whose sole responsibility is safety,” he said. “We’re coming in to give them a gameplan.”

Timm said the two largest areas of concern with security are access control and communication.

Access control is how schools allow outsiders to enter the building.

Timm said schools should have one access point where visitors need to be checked in before they are allowed to enter the main part of the building.

“If we don’t know at any given time who’s in our building, we’re in trouble,” he said.

Communication is the ability to contact school members when an incident has occurred.

Hot-button issue Paul Timm said one of the questions he gets asked the most is whether he thinks teachers should have guns for security purposes.

He does not think teachers should have guns though he said he respects the opinion of those who disagree with him.

He said there are too many variables with giving teachers guns, such as background checks on the teachers and whether they would be able to use a gun properly when needed.

A police officer stationed at the school should be the limit of people carrying guns, he said. threats – meaning students and staff – are greater because they are more difficult to control.

He said the key to preventing those threats is awareness of how others are behaving in the school and forming relationships with people.

Timm said he consults with about 500 schools and speaks at conferences.

He has conducted security assessments of Lemont High School and is in consistent contact with administrators. He said he also has ongoing conversations with members of Lemont School District 113A, although he has never been formally contracted with them.

Timm said the book covers his firm’s process and philosophy on school security in greater detail than when speaking to administrators and school staff members.

“If we can put the holistic approach in the book, we can help a lot more administrators than we are now,” he said. “There’s a tremendous need, there’s a tremendous desire to know what can help to make the learning environment safer.”

He said a highly publicized school shooting drives up interest in school security, but people let their guard down as time passes. Many towns think of themselves like Mayberry, the idealistic town in “The Andy Griffith Show,” he said.

“A lot of times we go to schools and they think, ‘We’ve never had an incident. We’ll never have an incident,’” he said. “While [security threats are] not an issue for most schools, we better make sure the barn door is not wide open.”

He said schools need to have a heightened awareness of security threats – in a way that is not like being afraid of the boogeyman but more like being attentive drivers.

Timm said school security has improved since incidents such as the shootings at Columbine and Sandy Hook, but more needs to be done.

“I’m not advocating that we have a metal detector at the entrance of every school, but we are better to be safer than we used to be,” he said.

4 Penguins discovers Lemont’s appetite for gelato

LEMONT – Before the gelato shop 4 Penguins opened, Lemont resident Kim Valone knew she wanted to do two things: create a business her whole family could work in and run the business in Lemont.

“It was very important for me to have this business in Lemont because I wanted to give back to the community,” she said.

4 Penguins opened in late July at 12263 Walker Road, serving homemade gelato and shaved ice snoballs.

Valone’s family has lived in Lemont for more than 20 years. She worked in mortgage banking but left to raise her four children. She continues to work at home with a wholesale travel company.

Her husband, Garry, handles the advertising and marketing and her children work with her in the shop. Her oldest daughter is a 21-year-old student at Purdue University,

Valone said the original plan was to run a seasonal business selling snoballs out of a trailer. But her proposed stationary structure would not have met the village’s commercial design standards, according to Planning and Economic Development Director Charity Jones.

Valone said she could have looked to open her business outside of Lemont but wanted to stay in town and decided to rent a space.

When looking at what else she could serve besides the snoballs, she said she discovered gelato.

“We honestly thought the shaved snoballs would be the big thing, but the kids here in Lemont are extremely receptive to gelato – more so than we thought,” she said.

Though she had no experience making gelato, Valone now creates her own flavors everyday. She was trained by a chef from the same company that sold her the equipment to make it.

She said her display case holds 10 trays of gelato and she

Valone said she will serve warmer foods for when the temperature turns colder, though she will have gelato year-round.

She has already started serving coffee and hot chocolate and is looking at adding muffins, scones, croissants and soup to the menu.

Another feature she plans to start is a gift cup service.

Customers can purchase an item for a friend, leave a cup on a shelf with their name on it and tell them that it is waiting at the shop.

Though the shop attracts customers of all ages, Valone said she wants it to be a kids’ hangout spot.

During the summer, they had a cornhole game on the side of the building, and she said she plans to add more tables outside next summer.

Valone said she has regular customers and most of the business has been attracted by word-of-mouth.

“He’s a coward. He couldn’t accept sometimes relationships don’t work. He couldn’t accept people move on.

“And he couldn’t face her when he shot her,” Koch said.

Throughout his two-week murder trial, Erick Maya maintained the same posture and position at the defense table.

He sat slightly forward with his head down and did not look as witness after Erick M. witness testified Maya about his relationship with Briana Valle.

Although he was asked to stand, his demeanor did not change Friday as the jury announced he was guilty on all counts.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching a verdict. Maya continued looking away as the jury returned while Valle’s mother, Alicia Guerrero, looked up to the ceiling.

“I was thinking about my daughter,” she said later.

Maya, 24, was called “a coward” Friday by Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Chris Koch in closing arguments.

The prosecutor said Maya tried to control Valle, a 15-yearold student at Romeoville High School.

When Valle ended their relationship, Maya went to her Romeoville home Feb. 13 and ambushed Valle and Guerrero, Koch said.

Valle died after being shot in the head through the window of her mother’s car.

Guerrero was struck near her collarbone and survived.

Maya of Cicero was found guilty of two counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm by a felon. He faces at least 71 years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Robert Livas on Oct. 20.

Guerrero sobbed frequently during closing arguments Friday morning and left the courtroom when defense attorney George Lenard said police “put their blinders on” to focus on Maya and not another suspect.

Dylan Somma, who lived on Emery Avenue where the shooting occurred, was arrested running from the police as they searched for the shooter on Feb. 13. Somma testified

last week that he fled because he was wanted on outstanding warrants and police had flooded the neighborhood after the shooting.

During his testimony, Somma said he’d never met Valle, Guerrero or Maya.

About 15 minutes after beginning deliberations, the jury asked to review the transcript of Somma’s testimony. After Livas read the testimony for them again, the jury deliberated for about another hour before reaching their verdict.

Valle’s parents, a handful of family members, Romeoville police officers and reporters sat in the courtroom audience.

None of Maya’s family attended.

Foreman Ryan Connelly said when jurors began deliberations “everybody was pretty much on the same page” regarding Maya’s guilt, but they wanted to confirm they recalled Somma’s claims accurately.

“The way the case was presented gave a very clear picture of what happened,” Connelly said. “Everyone felt [Maya] was responsible.”

In separate interviews, three courthouse employees described Maya’s expression as “a smirk” while he was taken from the courtroom to be transported back to the county jail Friday afternoon.

“We’re happy with the verdict. We’re grateful for all the hard work from the state’s attorney, the Romeoville police and our victim advocate,” Guerrero said. “I also want to thank the jurors.”

Maya met Valle through Facebook in the summer of 2012, and the girl soon ran away to be with the man who was eight years older than her.

Despite her parents’ efforts to keep her from contacting him, Valle continued to see Maya and accepted “an engagement ring.” The family moved to Romeoville in 2013, but Valle and Maya continued to exchange text messages using her friends’ phones.

When Valle broke off the relationship in December and told Maya she had been seeing a 17-year-old boy from school, he sent messages threatening to rape and kill her and her family.

Guerrero obtained an order of protection against Maya.

Pizza Fest is giant success for foundation Since 2007, the Lemont High School Educational Foundation has awarded nearly $250,000 in grants to aid Lemont High School’s students, faculty and staff.

A primary reason it has been able to provide this continual level of support is the success of its Food for Thought series.

When considering its 2014 event, the foundation’s COMMUNITY Board of Directors decided to VOICE change things up and put on Mary a family friendly event, with Ticknor the hope of drawing interest from all ages. That may be the best decision the foundation has made to date!

On Sept. 20, the foundation hosted Food for Thought: Pizza Fest! on a beautiful evening at Talcott Square in downtown Lemont. Pizza Fest! drew Lemont High School students and faculty, as well as families and community members who were just looking for some pizza on a Saturday night. More than 1,900 tickets were sold for Pizza Fest!, making it the most attended foundation event in history. In fact, that total matched the combined number of tickets sold for all seven of the Food for Thought events from 2007 to 2013!

It only is appropriate that the most widely attended event in the Foundation’s history also was its most financially successful. Pizza Fest! generated more than $51,000 in revenue, easily setting the bar for a Food for Thought event.

Of course, Pizza Fest! wouldn’t have been possible if not for the tremendous generosity of the stars of the show – the pizza vendors themselves. Eight restaurants – Ats a Nice Pizza, Beggars Pizza, Gelsosomo’s Pizzeria, Jimbo’s Pizza, Nancy’s Pizza, Pizza Mia, StoneHouse Pub and Turnabout Pizza – worked feverishly to feed the nearly 2,000 people in attendance.

The foundation also thanks Pollyanna Brewing, Otto Brandt Wines and 4 Penguins, each of whom will contribute a significant portion from their sales that night to the foundation.

Because of the generosity of the event sponsors who helped underwrite all costs of the event, every dollar made at Pizza Fest! will benefit Lemont High School’s students, faculty and staff.

Weed - Though a year-round yard task, it’s extremely important to pull as many weeds as possible in the fall. As cooler temperatures set in, weeds start to store food in their roots for the winter. Prevent weed regrowth by pulling or digging weeds out of the ground with a weeding blade or use a homemade weed control solution, such as a combination of vinegar, water and dish soap.

Teacher loves introducing students to new cultures

She uses her passion for food and cooking as part of the lessons, too, making crepes, cream puffs and croque monsieur.

“One of the things I like to do in the classroom is a cheese tasting because the variety of cheese that American students are exposed to is generally limited to white and orange,” she said.

Besides her students, Mi-

kulcik also is a leader among French teachers in the area.

She has given presentations for the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages and the Illinois Council on Teaching Foreign Languages.

She is a Teachers for Assessment and Language Learning Illinois leader, serving as a ICTFL resource for area foreign language teachers.

Outside of her work, Mikulcik has a family with two young children to raise.

She said she has to set boundaries in order to balance her school and home lives.

“I’m committing myself to when I’m at school and when I’m at work, I’m 100 percent invested here,” she said. “I do have to bring my work home with me, and I set a time limit. Then I focus on myself and my family because that’s what makes me happy. When I get back to school, I’m reenergized and can go about my day.”

Mikulcik said she is honored and excited to receive the Suburban Life Best Under 40 award.

“It just warmed my heart that I was getting this award and that it reflects the love and passion I have for my craft and my students,” she said.

In her seventh year at Hinsdale South, she is the school’s only French teacher, instructing everything from the basic class to Advanced Placement French 4.

Mikulcik is the sponsor of the Hinsdale South French Club and National French Honor Society, works with students on the National French Exam and celebrates National French Week.

She also is working on creating a foreign language outreach program for local middle school students, with some of her French students serving as ambassadors.

“I think it is very important for people to embrace other cultures and to have those connections,” Mikulcik said.

“For me, French is the way that I’ve been able to do that and explore the Francophone culture in Canada, as well as in France, and see how the language is part of everything.”

Vistro serves Paul Virant take on family dining HINSDALE – I first attempted to stroll into Vistro on a Wednesday evening without a reservation.

That was foolish, I quickly realized, when the hostess politely told me that it would be at least an hour wait. This is Paul Virant’s eagerly anticipated new family restaurant, after all, and the large space was packed – all the seats around the bar, all the tables in the back, all the waiting room in front.

I’m impatient, so I made a reservation for the next evening, and returned to Hinsdale with my friend who has more patience with me than I would.

The next night it was similarly busy, because, as a busser commented after our meal, “Everyone comes out for Chef Paul.”

The mood was lively, with conversing couples, business professionals and families filling the tasteful but casual space. No sign identifies the building facade, but an interior, exposed brick wall is painted with a large Vistro logo bearing the motto: It’s all good.

Not many children are likely to be found eating at Virant’s other two acclaimed restaurants, Vie in Western Springs and Perennial Virant in Chicago, so he has said he wants Vistro to be a place where every member of the family can find something appealing.

And he has pulled it off.

The menu has quesadillas and pizzas and other accessible options, joined by upscale touches such as the West Loop salumi selection. I noticed the dry-aged burger appeared to be the most popular item coming out of the kitchen, along with fried chicken.

The drink menu is kid-friendly, as well, with every cocktail also available as a mocktail; and a selection of special sodas joins a short list of craft beers.

Outlook: Lemont is a young team this fall with only two seniors and two juniors, but early signs are quite promising for the Indians.

“They are all adjusting well and developing quickly into a very good team with

high expectations,” coach Christopher Hill said.

Junior Sara Brenza is playing first singles while freshman Anna Ford has stepped in at second singles.

The senior duo of CJ Hunter and Melissa Smith are playing No. 1 doubles, junior Ashley Mathews and sophomore Gabby Rabianski are competing at No. 2 doubles and sophomores Liz Blickhahn and McKenna Harbison are currently at No. 3 doubles.

Lemont improved to 6-5 on the fall in dual meets and 3-0 in the South Suburban Blue conference after defeating TF North 5-0 on Tuesday. Brenza and Ford led the way with singles victories.

The Indians also placed first at the Joliet Tournament on Sept. 13 as Hunter and Smith finished first.

When the postseason comes around, Lemont will have one of the toughest roads just to get to the state tournament as it will be thrown into a sectional with perennial power Hinsdale Central and a Glenbard East team with elite singles players.

Lemont High School’s state champion cheerleading program will host Bowling for Bows, a candlelight bowling fundraiser, at 8 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 4 at Strike n’ Spare II in Lockport.

This family-friendly event will serve as a fundraiser for head coach Dave Erlenbaugh’s program.

A $25 ticket will provide a each bowler with an unlimited pizza buffet, dessert, shoe rental and bowling. A cash bar will be available. Supporters who do not wish to bowl can take part in the pizza buffet and dessert for $10.

One thing we’ve learned about the NFL in recent seasons is if you think you know who the real contenders are, just wait a couple of weeks and it will certainly change. Over the past two decades, no more than eight of 12 playoff teams have repeated. And in most of those seasons, back-toback playoff appearances have been more like a 50-50 proposition.

Then, of course, there’s the worst-to-first transitions that have seen at least one and often two or three teams go from last in their divisions to first in just one season since the turn of the century.

Still, with 2014 now already 19 percent complete, this is crazy! I don’t know about you, but I have no idea who the chalk is.

It seems a safe bet that 2013 cellar dwellers Oakland, Jacksonville and Tampa will continue to struggle, while St. Louis and Minnesota appeared ready to compete until injuries and offthe-field issues felled key contributors Sam Bradford, Chris Long and Adrian Peterson.
