New Lemont website to attract new homeowners, businesses

In an effort to attract the interest of prospective residents and businesses, the village of Lemont has created a new website promoting features of the community.

The village of Lemont worked with Lemont-based PlumThree, owned by resident Laura Swalec, to create the new www. ilivelemont.com website.

“The village has refreshed their ongoing commitment to community development and this marketing initiative is an ideal opportunity to showcase retail, parks, arts, outdoor activities and the many unique treasures of Lemont,” Swalec said.

Representatives from the village of Lemont will be part of a workshop next week in hope of gaining new ideas to boost economic development and tourism in Lemont.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau, which promotes tourism and economic development along the I&M Canal corridor through marketing, will host “Why Main Streets Matter! Bringing Visitors to Your Small Business” Wednesday.

The day-long workshop is geared to aid municipal leaders, economic development directors, planners, elected officials, chamber of commerce members, small business and other property owners from the area in finding ways to bring visitors and jobs to the area.

“Both Charity and I continually seek ways to bolster economic development and tourism in Lemont,” Brown said.

This is the first of many workshops, which have yet to be scheduled, for the CVB that will focus on revitalizing main streets and economic development, DeGrush added.

The CVB benefits not only Lemont but other towns along the canal, including: Bolingbrook,Joliet,Romeoville,Utica,Bedford Park, Morris, Coal City and Lockport.

Assistant Village Administrator George Schafer said through the “special deals” section on the site, businesses will be able to advertise.

He added business owners will hopefully be able to see the site is successful by visitors using the coupons in their establishment.

“We can track what is successful and track where the successful areas are,” Schafer said of the site.

The website construction cost the village just under $20,000.

Pete Fejzuloski learned the restaurant business by starting at the bottom at the age of 14.

Today, Fejzuloski and his wife, Julie — Lemont residents — stand at the helm of the Paisans Pizza chain of restaurants, with locations at 6226 Ogden Ave., Berwyn; 3720 Grand Blvd., Brookfield; and 5840 W. 16th St., Cicero.

The dynasty started in 1985 when Luigi Fejzuloski opened a small shop in Cicero where his 14-year-old son, Pete, was his right-hand man.

“When we started we used to make pizzas in a kitchen oven,” Pete Fejzuloski said. “We’d

His sons, Peter, 21, and Dominick, 19, have joined Fejzuloski in the restaurant business.

Like him, they started at the bottom.

And then there’s Julie, who keeps the books for the business.

“She’s the big boss,” he added.

There’s more to operating a restaurant than just knowing how to cook, Fejzuloski said.

And it doesn’t end with hard work, either.

Fejzuloski ends each working day with the satisfaction that can only come from giving the job his all.

“I’m very proud, I love what I do,” he said. “My biggest thing is I love to watch people eat and have a good time. It makes me feel good.”

Regular business has resumed in the downtown building with the foyer completely renovated and village board meetings held upstairs in the board room. Village: $21M sports facility would attract 650K annually to Lemont

LEMONT — A $21 million sports complex will be built on a stretch of land in downtown Lemont by November if a “fast-track” plan moves forward as village officials expect.

The proposed 26-acre, 135,000-squarefoot athletic facility — being referred to as the Lemont Sports Complex — was first unveiled Monday by the Lemont Village Board.

The development was touted by officials as an attraction that would bring in 650,000 people annually to the downtown area.

Construction would be paid for using sales tax, Tax Increment Financing district funds, income tax and operation revenue from the facility, officials said.

“It’s a fast-track project,” Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said Monday night. “I want the facility to be ready to go for the fall season.”

The announcement came Monday after the village received results from land and project viability studies, which effectively greenlighted the project, Reaves said. The village board also took the first step in funding the project by approving the issuance of general obligation bonds.

“This is something you have to do due diligence work on and make sure the project is feasible,” Reaves said. “(Otherwise there is) no reason to put forth a project.”

“It’s a project that again, I can’t stress enough, will not go on residents’ property tax bills,” Reaves said. “Just like the police department, the renovation of village hall, the new public works facility — none of that goes on their property tax. It never has and never will.”

The 26-acre site at the end of Stephen Street along the southern edge of the I&M Canal is proposed to have four indoor and outdoor turf fields, a multi-purpose area and an outdoor skating rink for the winter months. The fields will be open to baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse and soccer. The complex is proposed to be staffed by a firm that will be working under the umbrella of the village of Lemont, officials said.

Village Board over the past year, Reaves said in a phone interview Wednesday. Under the Open Meetings Act, government bodies can discuss real estate acquisitions in closed session.

In October, the board was made aware of a $20,000 expenditure to fund the two viability studies, officials said.

One of the studies determined the proposed complex would be viable enough to create additional revenue for the village, Reaves said,

adding that those figures would be available to the public during a Feb. 11 public hearing on the proposed development.

A second study determined the land, formerly home to the Tri-Central Marine Terminal, Inc., could support the development, he said.

Releasing certain financial details would be illegal To the Editor: During my years as a newspaper reporter, I used to love digging up public records. I learned early in my career that it is one thing to be told information but it is even better to sift through public documents when you want to know what is really going on in government.

I never forgot the importance of that lesson when I moved into elective office.

It is why that as a member of the Illinois General Assembly I was an early sponsor of our state’s first Freedom of Information laws. And it is why I most recently launched the Ledger (ledger.illinoiscomptroller.com), an online financial database that takes state government transparency to a whole new level.

In recent weeks some have suggested that as comptroller, I should also produce a “state checkbook” that documents every dime taxed and spent by Illinois government. In fact, that information request to our office asked for a “complete data dump” of state financial records.

But the state database tracking revenues and expenditures includes confidential information that the law prohibits from being given out — things like Social Security numbers and information about tax refunds, public aid and foster care payments, workers comp and unemployment checks. A “complete data dump” would be illegal.

I encourage all Illinois residents to check out the Ledger and let me know what other information would be helpful. Because after all this state has been through, it’s not enough for the taxpayers to “hear” from government; they rightly want to see the proof.

As a former reporter, I appreciate that.

Many benefits offered for visiting The CORE The holidays are usually a pretty busy time of the year for most of us.

For me, this time of year was even crazier than usual because I also started a new job! I am pleased to say I joined the team at the Lemont Park District as the fitness members services manager at The CORE Fitness & Aquatic Complex.

In this role, I am responsible for serving our CORE members, fitness center operations and fitness programming. I am also the race director for the Freedom Run and the Frigid 5k, which is really exciting because I am a runner.

Over the course of the last month, I’ve really enjoyed getJen Saylor ting to know the members at The CORE and learning all about the great facilities and programs offered by the Lemont Park District. As I embark on the new year, I am really excited for what 2013 has in store for me, as well as our members, at The CORE. Speaking of 2013, the new year started out with a bang at The CORE with a fantastic membership promotion this month called CORE Resolution 2013. All new members paid no enrollment fee in January.

In addition, they were entered into a drawing at the end of the month to win great prizes including six months of personal training, a free annual CORE membership and free CORE Gear — The CORE’s fitness apparel and accessories.

One thing that I am really going to concentrate on is making sure our CORE members are aware of the CORE Rewards members-only benefits. All CORE members receive discounts on select fitness programs, premium guest pass pricing and a bonus for referring a friend. We have also partnered with ATI Physical Therapy to provide free seminars for our members on topics such as shoulder health, back care and knee pain. We have been working with (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago) and have been trying to get that land viable for almost 20 years,” Reaves said. “We have to do environmental testing to determine if areas, if any, are contaminated and how to encapsulate that and have the public be back on the land.”

Residents will have a chance to share their thoughts on the project at the public hearing Monday, Feb. 11.

Residents opposed to the project could also organize a petition against the development to force the proposal onto election ballots via a referendum. Such a petition would require signatures from at least 7.5 percent of Lemont’s registered voters — or 785 — and would have to be filed by March 2.

When asked how the complex would differ from the Lemont Park District’s The CORE, Reaves said that facility is geared toward community events, whereas the Lemont Sports Complex would host traveling sports teams.

The CORE, 16028 127th St., opened to the public in December 2009 and was part of a capital project funded by a $16.2 million referendum approved by taxpayers in 2007.

Lemont Park Board President Pat Sexton sent a statement to the press in an email Wednesday stating the proposed facility will be a complimentary piece of recreation in town.

“The Lemont Park District is fully committed to our mission of providing premium facilities, parks and programs for our Lemont residents,” Sexton said in the statement. “We believe the village of Lemont’s new sports facility can offer a complimentary piece of recreation by creating a local presence for regional and statewide travel sport(s) tournaments.”

Lemont Trustee Paul Chialdikas said local business owners are “ecstatic” for the proposed development. Chialdikas owns PC's Pancake Cafe in Lemont.

“650,000 people a year is a very exciting number as business owners,” Chialdikas said.

“I thank you as a business owner and for other business owners for working through this project to make it happen.”

Each month, Lemont High School honors a student from each grade level for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school’s various departments each month. Students may be selected for this honor only once in their careers at Lemont High School.

Local businessman Brad Grcevic, of Edward Jones Inc. in Lemont, contributes a donation each month to a charity selected by the “Student of the Month” award winners. January’s winners selected Noah’s Hope Fund to receive the donation.

Mr. Bancroft served his country honorably in the WWII United States Army. Survived by one sister, Helen Dougherty of Lemont and numerous nieces and nephews. Clare Tedens Ayo Spangler, born in Lemont Illinois on June 23, 1924, passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas on January 12, 2013 with loving family at her side. Clare moved from Lemont to Houston in 1947 where she was a working mother and served for many years as a volunteer Eucharistic Minister bringing communion to hospital patients and the homebound, as a charity volunteer, on various councils and committees at her church and joyfully sang in the church choir. She fondly remembered her childhood in Lemont and returned often to visit family. She is predeceased by her brother, John H. Tedens and sisters, Marjorie Mason and Rita Sniegowski.

Clare is survived by her husband, Robert Spangler and her children, Anthony Ayo of Irvine, CA, Stephen Aiosi, Christina Ayo, of Houston, and two adored grandsons. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who she held close to her heart. She had a deep faith and a big heart. We who love her will always remember her compassion, her sense of fun and her beautiful smile, which she freely shared. We will miss her every day. A Memorial Mass was held on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Houston, Texas.

MUSICAL CLOSE-UP ‘Sunset Boulevard’ intersects screen’s ‘Les Miserables’ along Drury Lane

A

s vocal coach to Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman in “Les Miserables,” Roberta Duchak of Burr Ridge helped make movie musical history. An accomplished performer on Broadway and in national tours, she now provides musical direction to a stage show with its own historic lineage.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical reinvention of “Sunset Boulevard,” based on the 1950 film by Billy Wilder, just opened at Drury Lane Theatre. The tale of faded glory and unfulfilled ambition centers Duchak on silent movie star Norma Desmond, who longs for a return to her glamorous heyday on the big screen, before talkies squeezed her out. When Norma meets struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis, she hopes it’s a way back.

Darien native Duchak reminisces about starting high school at Hinsdale South the year Pamn Baker joined the faculty as a theater director. “The Sound of Music” was Baker’s first show, and Duchak’s first lead as Maria. She says Baker will retire at the end of the school year.

You coached Crowe for two weeks to prepare for his ‘Les Miz’ audition?

I worked with Russell Crowe in Chicago, while he was shooting ‘Superman.’ I went to the actual audition with him (for) the director. I was there when Tom Hooper said, ‘Let’s make the movie, mate.’ I thought (my) gig was over. Russell (later) called me personally, and asked if I would continue working with him. I was there for four months (in) England.

What was he like on the movie set?

He’s one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever met. He takes every challenge on like it’s an Olympic event. It was a pleasure working with such a perfect student. Hugh Jackman is the same way. Whatever they decide to do — whether it’s changing body type or changing diet or perfecting their singing or dancing, in Hugh’s case — (they) do everything it takes to be the best at it.

Did you know you were creating a hit?

We all knew we were making history. A movie musical has never been sung completely live. It was exciting. Everyone who signed up to make this movie really wanted to be there. It was thrilling.

You attended a premiere?

I was at both premieres. (Russell) invited me to London and New York. On Christmas Day, my entire family, 19 of us, went to see the film — waiting for my name in the credits (as) vocal coach.

Did you coach other actors?

I was on set every day, in case anyone wanted to warm up. (I) warmed up Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks and Amanda Seyfried, as well. (During filming, it was) sung live with just a piano player in their ears. Sometimes, I was the pianist. The orchestrations were written and recorded after the film was edited. That’s a first.

It’s usually done three months ahead of time. Everyone was pretty fearless in this project.

Is this your first ‘Sunset Boulevard?’

It’s all brand new to me. I’ve fallen in love with the score. It is almost all sung through or underscored. What’s great about the music — it (has) jazzy moments to reflect the 1950s Hollywood scene, (along with) traditional musical theater and grand operatic moments. It’s a treat for the ears. I think it’s one of the best stories ever put to music. It’s like a mystery novel with amazing singers and an orchestra. It’s so grand and lush and suspenseful all at the same time.

Early January loss a distant memory as Indians ride 5-game win streak

The new year didn’t start off the way the Lemont boys basketball team had envisioned.

A Jan. 4 loss to Richards dampened spirits after the team had captured the Romeoville Christmas Classic title.

But the Indians have responded in fine fashion following that defeat and will take a five-game Game box winning streak into Friday’s road Lemont 62 game at Tinley Park.

The Indians were last in action on Friday when they defeated Bremen 62-44.

“I was really happy with the way the first unit played especially when we got up,” Runaas said. “Sometimes you can flip the switch off but they kept it on. We had a 10-0 run in the first 45 seconds or minute of the fourth quarter and that put the game away.

In a rare feat, Lemont has four players averaging in double-figures in points and each of them went over the 10point plateau against Bremen.

Mike Wisz and Marty Einikis had 17 points apiece with Joey Hehir and Juozas Balciunas chipping in with 12 and 11, respectively.

“We are really sharing the ball,” Runaas said. “We have guys who can be 20-point scorers and Juozas is one. Mike Wisz has the potential to be one next year. But it makes us tougher to guard when you’ve got a lot of options.”

Lemont is currently tied with TF North for second place in the South Suburban Blue conference race, one game behind Hillcrest. The Indians will see TF North on Friday, Feb. 8 before squaring off against Hillcrest in their final regular-season game on Friday, Feb. 22.

Giatras: Win state or die trying

Chris Giatras only knows one speed, and that is full-steam ahead.

So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Lemont senior has lofty goals for the upcoming Class 2A state series which kicks off Saturday with the Tinley Park individual regional.

“As of right now, win state or die trying, the same as last year,” said Giatras, who also repeated that mantra during the Indians run to the Class 6A football semifinals in the fall. “Disappointed is an understatement (if a state title doesn’t hapChris Giatras pen). The Class 2A fifth-place finisher at 182 pounds a year ago, Giatras has been nearly unbeatable this winter at the same weight class. After overcoming a shoulder injury suffered in the final football game, he sits with a record of 34-1 on the season with his only loss to Oak Park-River Forest’s Joe Ariola (ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by illinoismatmen.com) at the Hinsdale Central invitational.

“I feel like I’m in a great spot as of now,” Giatras said. “That one loss will get at me forever but it came against a great opponent.

And I was coming off my injury and didn’t really practice at all that week. Now I’m at

full swing and I think I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m more prepared than ever.”

Giatras certainly appears to be peaking at the right time after his performance this past weekend when he captured the title at the South Suburban Conference meet. He notched a pair of pins before beating Joe Young of TF South 3-2 in the final.

“I was really happy,” he said. “I don’t want to call it a warm-up because obviously it was a tough match against a really good opponent. I wouldn’t say it’s a rivalry with that kid (Young), I like the kid. I played against him in football. It was great competition and great momentum taking me into the state tournament.”

As a team, Lemont finished 11th at the tournament with 63 points. Jason Walsh (145) and Mike Devitt (220) added fourthplace finishes for the Indians.

“No doubt, the work is definitely there,” Giatras said. “But with our lack of numbers, it has been hard to stay competitive. The work is there, it just doesn’t reflect in our record.”

Loaded sectional awaits conference champs

In a 2012-13 season that has been nearly perfect, the only unfortunate thing to happen to the Lemont girls bowling team is its sectional assignment.

Instead of heading to closer events hosted

by Reavis or Bremen, the Indians will make the trek Saturday to Echo Lanes in Morris for the Plainfield North sectional that arguably features the toughest field in the state with top-ranked teams Waubonsie Valley and Oswego East.

But whatever the outcome is once there, nothing can erase the mighty accomplishments by the team this winter, including a first-place finish at last Saturday’s South Suburban Blue conference meet and an undefeated 13-0 record in league duals.

“No matter what happens at the sectional, you can’t take away the undefeated season,” said Lemont coach Mark Hollatz, who is in his 10th year leading the program. I’ve never had an undefeated season. We’ve had a great year. I’d love to get through (to state) and shock the bowling community but regardless of what happens, you can’t take away what these girls have accomplished.”

Only the top two teams at each sectional qualify for the state meet (held at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Feb. 8-9) as well as the two best individuals not on those squads.

“At some of the other sectionals, you can shoot 1,050 or 1,100 and get down. We have had a couple of times where individuals have made it down in tough sectionals. As good as we did in the conference meet, we will have to be even better in the sectional.”

Lemont put the finishing touches on the South Suburban Blue conference crown, their first since 2008-09, with a score of 5,511 Saturday at the Oak Forest Bowl. TF South (5,420) and Tinley Park (5,193) rounded out the top three.

Indians senior Nora Collins won the individual title with a pin total of 1,222.

Sophomore Kyra Udziela was fourth (1,157) and senior Lizzy Melvin (1,147) came in fifth.

“We were basically losing all day,” Hollatz said. “We were down 157 pins to TF South going into Game 5. Down 157 with two games left is like being down six runs in the seventh inning of a baseball game; it is not easy to make up.

make it up all in one game, try to make up 70 or so pins. They ended up making up 155 and Nora had a 269 game. She struck the first eight frames.”

One of the team’s best attributes is depth, which was on full display Saturday.

“I bowled seven different girls,” the coach said. “A lot of girls got in there. It’s a good problem to have. I don’t know who to play sometimes because we have so much depth.

I haven’t had a team with this much depth.

“Five of them are seniors and they give us lots of good numbers. Lizzy and Nora have been on varsity since sophomore year and they have a lot of experience. They say you go as far as your seniors take you and we have a great group of seniors. We will miss them.”

PREP ROUNDUP Competitive cheerleading Lemont qualified for the state meet for the eighth time in as many seasons Saturday.

The Indians placed third in the medium team division of the Riverside Brookfield sectional and will now compete in the final event which begins today at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

The squad has finished among the state’s top three in its division seven straight seasons, a run that has included three state championships, two runnerup finishes and two third-place finishes.

Lemont’s cheerleading team is the only athletic program in school history to win an IHSA team state championship.

Lemont posted a score of 85.03, which placed the Indians behind only Tinley Park (87.63) and Oak Forest (86.60) in the 15-team division.

Boys swimming Lemont picked up a 117-51 victory over Bremen in a South Suburban Conference dual meet on Tuesday.

The highlight of the event was provided by the 200-yard medley relay grouping of Connor Ganzer, Brent Husa, Aaron Oldanie and Justin Stanwyck which broke the school record with a time of 1:54.41.

Joe Ziebell won the 200 free in 2:14.26, Ganzer placed first in the 50 free (24.36 seconds) and 100 free (53.88), and Husa was victorious in both the 100 butterfly (59.48) and 500 free (6:08.14).

Placing second were Jake Rangle (200 free), Michael Diorio (200 individual medley and 100 backstroke), Scott Franklin (50 free and 500 free), Stanwyck (100 butterfly) and Oldanie (100 free).

The 200 free relay quartet of Diorio, Evan Ganzer, Rangle and Ziebell was first in 1:43.43. The 400 free relay team of Connor Ganzer, Husa, Stanwyck and Dan Totura won in 3:53.68.
