t was exciting to see all our 4-H families out at the fairgrounds this year. It’s great to be back and enjoying summer fun with everyone. 4-H energy and excitement were in the air. Club booths were decorated, and projects were displayed with such pride, everything looked so nice. There was much anticipation about the 4-H fairs from everyone. The fun, excitement, and gathering of families and friends are part of the tradition. 4-H members are excited to display their 4-H projects and along with the fun, they learn and apply valuable life-skills that only 4-H can teach. At the fair, youth spend time telling the judge about what they learned, and the hard work that went into each project. 4-Her’s projects include; woodworking, welding, visual arts, foods, dogs, cats, bicycles, horses, and livestock – and so much more! Youth earned outstanding performance through the many projects entered in the 4-H fairs. University of Illinois Extension is pleased and excited to congratulate our 4-H participants and award winners for Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall-Putnam Counties with our project results. The best in class exhibits advance to the state 4-H competition held annually during the Illinois State Fair. 4-H challenges youth to “learn by doing.” We are the largest out-of-school youth organization. 4-H does this while offering fun, hands-on activities that teach skills for living that youth enjoy completing. Youth 4-H members range in age from 8 to 18. Youth who are 5-7 years of age may join 4-H as a Cloverbud member. 4-H is open to everyone. Children and teens can become involved in many different ways, they include; 4-H community clubs, special interest clubs, summer camps, in-school and after-school programs, workshops, community service projects, and more. Although many youth participate in the 4-H fairs, many others participate in 4-H programming outside of the fair events. 4-H is an organization that is local, regional, statewide, national, and international. The 4-H Fair is the summer event that culminates the 4-H program year for the 4-H Club participants. Youth showcase their projects that they have been working on throughout the year. Did you know 4-H offers over 200 projects? This selection provides something for everyone. Whether it be computers, horticulture, sewing, foods, citizenship, natural resources/environment, dogs & cats, rabbits, or agriculture with crops and livestock. Everyone can try something new and gain valuable experience. 4-H offers the opportunity to explore, see what you like, and have fun along the way. At the 4-H fairs, members gain valuable experience through meeting one-on-one with judges in each of their selected project areas. This is where 4-H truly shines; the judges give their time and provide the opportunity for youth to present their projects and the process of “learning by doing.” Our expert judges then award participants with ribbons, trophies, and the best in class. Best in class represent our counties at the Illinois State Fair in August. Extension is extremely grateful and fortunate
to have hundreds of volunteers who invest their time, interests, and talents in 4-H for members. These dedicated volunteers extend the reach of our programs to many communities. A huge thank you goes out to all of our 4-H families, 4-H Community Club Leaders, SPIN Club Leaders, 4-H Project Superintendents, 4-H Fair Judges, Home, and Community Education Association members, Fair Boards, and all others who come together with University of Illinois Extension throughout the year to support our area’s youth. (Additional volunteers are always needed to lead 4-H Clubs. Extension provides the screening, training, and resources to get your club active and explore the interests and talents of our youth in a fun and informal environment. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer. We need your help, and we can get you started. 4-H prepares youth to be our future community leaders, while having fun together.) We are so appreciative of our local donors. Their support makes the 4-H Programs a reality for youth to “learn by doing.” Our program budget is based upon local donations which bring back State and Federal funding to serve our local people. We sincerely thank our annual funders, business, and individuals who sponsor 4-H fair trophies, civic groups and organizations who make annual contributions, and all who donate to support this special community-based program that invests in youth. If you would like to become an annual supporter, please call the local Extension office. We very much need your help at whatever level you choose. Every dollar makes a difference in serving our youth and families! There are many 4-H opportunities available. Join a club near you this fall! With your first step into 4-H, you will be starting a learning adventure that will last a lifetime. We look forward to visiting with you. 4-H provides experiences that are valuable parts of family traditions. We hope to connect you and your family with lasting memories that will be cherished for many years to come and passed down to children and grandchildren. One 4-H leader summed it up perfectly by saying “if there was one thing I’d do again when I was raising my kids, it would be 4-H.” Enrollment is open in 4-H throughout the year. Please contact us when you are ready. Youth can join at any time, however, starting in the fall allows for the full program year benefit. We look forward to having you participate in the 2023 4-H fair in your county! Thank you for celebrating our area youth and their outstanding achievements at the 2022 4-H Fairs. In kindness, Susan Glassman University of Illinois Extension Interim Extension County Director
