formal proposals have ever been made. “When you’re talking about the micro brewery/craft brewery concept, I think the village has been supportive,” Mesaros said. “Our zoning code allows microbreweries with food in all the commercial districts, and the plan commission is also currently considering microbreweries and distilleries in the industrial districts. The liquor commission has discussed various microbrewery and craft brewery concepts for the past several months. The specific liquor license language for a microbrewery/craft brewery concept hasn’t been drafted yet, but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t consider it for the future. Likely this would be in response to a proposal, which is how our liquor commission operates, but we don’t have any pending applications.”

LA GRANGE – John Janowski thinks his village is awesome, but the 36-year-old software engineer said it’s time to change La Grange’s outdated alcohol ordinance to allow distilleries and microbreweries. To that end, Janowski established a petition on the website change.org, which, as of today, has more than 360 signatures. Janowski and his friend Steve Jasinski said they planned to bring the petition to a village Plan Commission meeting July 14, where the alcohol ordinance is an agenda item. The current village ordinance requires an establishment that sells alcohol to derive at least 60 percent of its revenue from food sales, indirectly eliminating bars, breweries and distilleries. “We have some great restaurants, but we can’t have sports bars, wine bars, martini bars or distilleries,” Janowski said. “La Grange has so much vibrancy during the day, but we’re missing it after 10 [p.m.] ... ” Janowski said successful breweries in nearby communities have exploded in popularity. “We’re not talking sleazy bars with dollar pitchers,” Janowski said. “We’re talking more of a classy martini or wine bar where people go and have an after-dinner drink or for business meetings. There are tons of professionals looking for a place to have a few drinks. “I’m not beating up the city,” Janowski said. “They’ve done incredible work so far. But to stay current we really need to refine this law.” Jasinski, a La Grange native and member of the La Grange Business Association, said he supports Janowski’s efforts, and neither has a vested interest in starting a brewery.

Teacher raises glass to family health in La Grange Park Mitchell’s ‘Sip the Garden’ book puts lid on sugary sodas By RENEE TOMELL rtomell@shawmedia.com BURR RIDGE – T. Kari Mitchell of Burr Ridge may be retired from teaching, but she can’t keep from crafting a lively lesson plan, this one in the form of a book aimed at improving a family’s health one glass at a time. Mitchell held a book signing July 11 in La Grange Park for “Sip the Garden: Fun, Easy Drinks for a T. Kari Healthier Family.” “The book offers fami- Mitchell lies just one manageable lifestyle change … that will positively impact their lives – it all begins in the drinking glass,” said Mitchell, who retired from teaching several years ago at Lyons Township High School in La Grange. “The book came about because I had been concerned about the rise of chronic diseases [and] the epidemic of childhood obesity. I’m still invested in the well-being of our youth.”

Mitchell described the cookbook as a call to action designed to put a lid on junk drinking, such as sugary sodas. She believes many families have good intentions about diet but can be overwhelmed. The beverages she creates from fruits and vegetables are not the familiar smoothies. “Several things make my book different,” she said. “The first is it’s water-based. It’s the vital fluid most don’t get enough of. And families will get at least minimum daily servings of fruits and vegetables. “I really concentrated on … balanced nutrition – fresh, wholesome, tasty plant- and water-based recipes,” she added, citing protein, fiber, healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids from nuts and seeds. “Because some people are concerned about eating too many animal products, they are all vegan, as well.” Given her own gluten intolerance, she paid special attention to crafting recipes that avoid such common allergens as dairy, eggs, gluten and soy. The drinks are designed to take the place of unhealthy beverages and fattening snacks, with various teas also featured. She’d like the lifestyle change to be approached as a family affair, with ev-

The equipment required is a high-powered blender, not the standard machine, which won’t be able to break down the plant walls and turn the nutrients into a beverage she describes as “smooth, thin and very palatable.” Her recipes have passed muster with friends and family, who have been encouraging her to create a cookbook for years, she said. To engage kids in the recipes, her book includes fun facts about each ingredient, rhyming titles and research questions to involve the entire family. Red Stars Reclaim First Place with 2-1 Road Win at Houston

DiBernardo and Hoy find the net to grab all three points for Chicago Houston, TX. – The Chicago Red Stars earned yet another away win on Sunday night and reclaimed the top spot in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings, defeating hosts Houston Dash 2-1 behind goals by Vanessa DiBernardo before the break and Jen Hoy after the break. Houston’s Tiffany McCarty temporarily leveled the score early in the second period. While the Red Stars had several half-chances in the opening stages of the match, the Dash nearly took the lead at the other end, as Ohai’s low centering ball from the right found a wide open McCarty and the attacker’s mishit shot made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Houston had another close look just after the quarter-hour mark, Rachael Axon creating havoc with a cross from the left and Jessica McDonald failing to make contact with the ball at the doorstep. Chicago would grab the lead in the 19th minute. Alyssa Mautz’s excellent service from the right picked out Vanessa DiBernardo in the center of the area and the midfielder found the net with a clinical finish. The visitors could have doubled their advantage seven minutes later, Arin Gilliland’s outstanding work on the left begging for the centering pass to be tapped home from close range, only for the well-positioned Mautz to go down under a Camila challenge that was judged to have been fair by referee Chris Spivey. The Dash nearly punished their opponents for the missed opportunity late in the half, as Melissa Henderson came close to reaching Ella Masar’s low cross from the right before a deflection on the subsequent redirect by McDonald’s made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Well inside first-half stoppage time, Sofia Huerta had a chance to add a second for the Red Stars on a one-on-one with McLeod, but she failed to take

advantage of Jen Hoy’s through ball by firing wide of the frame. After the interval, Chicago picked up right where it had left off, the ball falling right into the pass of Mautz, whose effort from 23 yards out sent it skimming off the bar. However, it would be the Dash finding the net three minutes from the hour mark, as Dalton was unable to get her fists on an Ohai cross from the right and McCarty nodded into the empty goal from the far post. Chicago outside back Gilliland continued to be a nuisance to the Houston defense, again pushing up the left in the 60th minute and making her way to the byline before picking out Huerta at the near post. The rookie forward did well to turn and release a powerful right-footed shot that whizzed just past the upright. Strike partner Hoy would aim perfectly moments later, as she received the ball at the top of the box courtesy of a Rachel Quon header and opted for a wicked half-volley that left McLeod without a chance on its way inside the right post. Down 2-1, the Dash attempted to create quality chances during the remainder of the game, but instead it was the road team that came close to scoring again when Gilliland’s long-range rocket twelve minutes from full time whistled inches wide of the left upright. It would be the day’s final noteworthy action, as the Red Stars put on a clinic in managing a late lead and held on for all three points. The NWSL leaders will honor all eight of their World Cup participants, including their U.S. quartet, ahead of the official “Welcome Home Game” against Boston Breakers on July 18, which will also serve as the club’s 2015 Pride Night. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www. chicagoredstars.com.

Village Board also appoints new deputy police chief, police sergeant and junior officer to force By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com

LA GRANGE – The La Grange Board of Trustees appointed Deputy Police Chief Rene Strasser as the village’s new police chief at their July 14 meeting. “Since January, Deputy Chief Renee Strasser has capably served the village in the capacity of acting police chief,” President Thomas Livingston said in a statement from the board. “In addition to tending to departmental operation such as budget development, as well as staffing and scheduling challenges, Deputy Chief Strasser also skillfully managed delicate and complex matters in an acting capacity, such as responsiveness to a neighborhood affected by a shooting ...” Strasser has 26 years worth of experience in law enforcement to the La Grange community. She was hired as a patrol officer in 1989 and was promoted to police sergeant in 1999. By 2009, Strasser was promoted to police lieutenant and then made deputy police chief in 2014. Strasser also has served the village as a squad leader, investigator, DARE officer and sergeant of investigations. “[Strasser} is very strong in her professional development, and that’s important where you never know what you’ll face each day,” Livingston said. COUNTRYSIDE – Terry’s Byke Haus is open again after a fire destroyed the store’s showroom in November 2014. The new showroom, 9930 W. 55th St., is about 400 feet from the old store, according to owner Terry Ahern. The iconic gorilla that stood in front of the old showroom, 9828 W. 55th St., will stay where it is until the old showroom can be rebuilt, he said. The owners opened the new space about two weeks ago. “They’re working on [getting per-

mits to rebuild] right now,” Ahern said. Everything at the showroom is on clearance, Ahern said. A fire that began about 10 p.m. Nov. 19, 2014, destroyed the bicycle showroom and apartments located above the store. The shop’s inventory was badly damaged by fire and water, according to Fire Chief John Buckley of the Pleasantview Fire Protection District. Crews were on the scene of the fire until about 2 a.m. Known for the giant, waving gorilla displayed at the front of the shop’s parking lot, Terry’s Byke Haus sells bicycles and accessories, as well as repair and maintenance services.

To the editor: A large plurality of the American populous has no idea why hospitals in this country depend so heavily on donors to maintain a safe supply of blood and its components – at least until they are patients and need transfusions to prolong their lives. However, there is a group of loyal, generous residents across the Western suburbs who do understand why donated blood is so important to this country: The regular donors at area drives. On Saturday, July 18, they – along with some newcomers – will roll up a sleeve and give back to the community by donating. The drive will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Mayfair Room of Divine Providence School, 2500 Mayfair Ave., Westchester. We at the Westchester Blood Program (est. 1974) believe deeply in our motto: America Depends on Blood Donors. On that day, donors will make a difference in their community, and walk-ins are welcome.

Hospitals are depending on blood donors and giving back

To the editor: [In a letter to the editor published July 1 in the La Grange Suburban Life] about allowing Nazareth Academy to install lights in their football stadium, [the author said] that the real point of the situation is “do lights at a football field enhance and benefit the community of La Grange Park?” If Nazareth is not seeking funding from the taxpayers of La Grange Park, why does something built with private funds, on private property, need to benefit the entire town? I, for one, would love to see night games at Nazareth, as I enjoy the Lyons Township High School night games. My house is close enough to Bennett Field to hear the LT marching band and loud cheering on some fall evenings and it makes me smile. It’s the sound of kids having fun on a Friday night, rather than doing things they shouldn’t be.

Red cups of alcohol are not for teenagers Important steps to avoid OUR VIEW

The red Solo cup has become a cultural icon. It announces: “I am – not so subtly – partaking in the consumption of alcohol, so get on board or get outta my way!” You can sing it while you swig it: “Red Solo cup, I fill you up! Let’s have a party!” And if you tell me you’re carrying around a cold pop in there, I’m going to be very suspicious. Either that “cold COMMUNITY pop” is code for whiskey, or VOICE you’re a real party pooper. Katherine I wonder, however, how much red-cup philosophy is Leibforth trickling down to our kids, into the basement or out into their “night games.” As my babies suddenly have become teenagers, I’ve nostalgically recalled the comparatively low-risk challenges of their early years. Being a teen now is riskier than it once was, and working in prevention education is like throwing open the blinds to a too-bright sun. It’s not that I don’t want to see the light. It’s just that it hurts for a minute as it reveals what’s lurking in the shadows. Not only does a teen’s early experimentation with substance use increase her chances of developing a life-long addiction, social hosting laws implemented in January 2013 put parents at increased liability. A parent’s passive acceptance of teen drinking – “Everyone does it” … “I’d rather they drink at home” … “We did it, too, when we were that age” – is a tacit expression of his values; it also says to law enforcement: we condone and are culpable for all that happens on our property. Property is defined by the law as your home, yard, boat, car, or even a hotel room for which you’ve paid. In addition, hosts are liable for all that may befall an underage drunk driver upon leaving the property, and any potential victims of that driver. Illinois social hosting laws are comprehensive and violation of those laws result in penalties ranging from class A misdemeanor to class A felony. Still, statistics show that friends and family remain the primary source of alcohol for underage drinking. The National Institutes of Health report that 5,000 youth die each year in alcohol-related accidents; more than 19,000 are delivered to the E.R. for alcohol-related injuries; and youth who drink are more likely to be the perpetrators and victims of sexual assault. We may proceed to party, but let’s face it: those red cups are not for teens.

contracting West Nile virus It seems the buzz surrounding the West Nile virus in Illinois quiets more every summer. That’s not a reason, however, to not take precautions to reduce your risk to exposure. The DuPage County Health Department, according to its website, has made four positive tests of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus so far this year, and Cook County has discovered 15 positive pools this year. The Will County Health Department last week in Bolingbrook collected its first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus. In 2014, there were 44 human cases of West Nile in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Health. There were three deaths, including one in DuPage County. Those figures are down from the 117 human cases and 11 deaths in 2013 and 290 human cases and 12 deaths in 2012. Human cases started to spike after only five were reported in 2009. In 2010, there were 61 human cases of West Nile virus, including four deaths. There were 34 human cases and three deaths in 2011. West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). There are steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten by a West Nile-infected mosquito. Follow these tips from the health department: • Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active – usually dawn and dusk. • When possible, avoid the outdoors during peak biting times – dawn and dusk. • Spray clothing with insect repellent. • Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin by following label directions. Some experts recommend lower concentra-

tions for children. Check with your doctor before applying insect repellent on infants, and wash your hands after using insect repellent. • Look for EPA-labeled products containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. It also is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites from around your residence. Mosquito eggs can develop in any standing water that lasts more than five to seven days. Follow these health department tips: • Turn over children’s wading pools and toys when not in use. • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling and trash containers that are left outdoors. • Change water in birdbaths twice a week. • Fix leaky faucets. They provide water where mosquitoes can breed. • Drill holes in window boxes and flower planters to prevent water from pooling. • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock with mosquito-eating fish. • Keep pools clean and chlorinated. • Eliminate standing water in your property. Take proper precautions this summer to reduce your exposure to the West Nile virus.

A license to kill?

To the gentleman who works for the chemical company spraying toxic weed killer: Do you really believe having a license makes your product safe? There are more than 80,000 legal chemicals of which thousands are known to be harmful, not to mention cigarettes which are 100 percent legal and require a license to be sold. People, do your own research before you have your lawns sprayed or fertilized with weed killer. Please Google search the recent findings on Roundup. These chemicals are not safe for us or for the environment.

How about the county pave that extra three feet or so of gravel on the side of the road and make it a bicycle path? More and more people are becoming active these days. So far, I’m proud of Gov. [Bruce] Rauner for actually keeping his promise standing up to the insiders and power brokers to help turn Illinois around. Given the long history of candidates claiming they would do this only to become elected incumbents perpetuating the awful crony game, it is encouraging to see someone with enough guts to do what is right even though the process is painful and despite a nonstop barrage from the mainstream.

It’s a great guide and choosing a glass this way only enhances the culinary experience. The extensive menu tempts with seafood, chops, pasta, sandwiches, salads, a calorie-conscious collection and gluten-free dishes. At Cooper’s Hawk, the desserts are as homespun and classic as the dishes themselves. The chocolate cake, filled with layers of chocolate mousse and ganache, was outstanding – a decadent treat without the heaviness some full-size desserts impart. The crumbled apple pie was not a slice, but rather a whole personal pie, capped with a flourish of crust and drizzled caramel sauce. Both dishes were served with vanilla ice cream, and definitely sized to share. All in all, this was a wonderful lunch filled with deliciously satisfying food and great wine. I noticed an extensive children’s menu that offered classic kid fare, but also some alternatives to the typical chicken fingers and pizza that were clever, but no less approachable for the young ones – chicken pot stickers, pasta with homemade meatballs,

BURR RIDGE – Lunch at Cooper’s Hawk? As a wine lover, it wasn’t hard to convince me. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has become known for its wide selection of wines and its carefully paired menu of modern American comfort food. On a particularly lovely afternoon, I set out with a friend to the location in the Burr Ridge Village Center, and opted for a table on the patio. I ordered a glass of the housemade sangria, a delicious wine punch loaded with fresh fruit and served chilled, perfect for the sunny summer day. My companion chose an equally summery peach wine, which she described as fresh and light – sweet, but not syrupy. It is one of a variety of fruit wines produced by Cooper’s Hawk. We whet our appetites with a starter of Mexican Drunken Shrimp, which were wrapped in bacon and served with fresh guacamole and a butter sauce laced with lime and tequila. The guacamole took center stage, fresh and delicious, pairing well with the saltiness of the crisp bacon. We shared two entrees, opting for beef and chicken. The Chicken Giardiniera was lightly breaded with panko crumbs and Parmesan, and its crispiness held up well to the vinegars and oils of the fresh giardiniera that topped it. The flavors were lovely, not too spicy, and the thought occurred that this combination would make a delightful sandwich. The Short Rib Risotto was a satisfying combination of creamy carnaroli rice, tender boneless short ribs and a rich and flavorful wine sauce melding mushrooms, sweet onions, shaved Parmesan and white truffle oil. I’m a sucker for any roast meat with the perfect sauce, and this certainly fit the bill. A sublime comfort food, it almost made me hope for fall weather. I should mention that every single item on the Coo-

LT baseball focusing on little things New coach, players use summer season to hone varsity skills By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – Summer baseball isn’t about wins and losses, it’s about learning the way varsity baseball is meant to be played. Kevin Diete took over as varsity coach at Lyons Township in the spring and is in charge of his first summer season with the Lions. He made sure to reinforce the fundamentals the program has been known for during the summer season. “Some of the main goals I have is No. 1 to teach them the game right and No. 2 get the juniors into how we want to play at the varsity level,” Diete said. “I’m trying to get them to sprint on and off the field in an attempt to get a quick transition. Sprinting on and off the field is one of my big things. And just making sure they know the game. If a guy lays down a great bunt, we have to have our bench guys involved in the game and giving him a high-five when he comes back in the dugout. Little things like that.” Those little things seem small, but summer is the time to get them ingrained so players don’t have to think about them in the spring. The Lions finished the regular-season portion of the summer last week. The Phil Lawler Classic, the summer postseason tournament, began July 13 with the Lions hosting St. Ignatius in the opener. The priority isn’t necessarily to win every game so Diete had a chance to work in some of the players newer to him on the squad. “I like to see a lot of juniors pitch because I already know what our seniors can give us, but by that same token I still want our seniors to get some innings and throw the ball well enough to where they’re maintaining their arm strength,” Diete said. “I’ll pitch some guys three innings, other guys two innings, but there’s never a set amount.”

For most of the players, the summer schedule includes playing with the high school program during the week and joining travel teams on the weekends. That split is another factor in how Diete makes his lineups, especially pitching. “It’s a battle with travel baseball,

too, because they’ll throw a lot of innings on the weekends and then be sore for the week,” Diete said. One of the biggest positives Diete saw was participation. The Lions had 30 guys on the summer roster and had more than 20 show up to each game.

“I’m able to get a lot of guys in and see them,” Diete said. “I’ve tried to make it evident to them – I want them to play with their travel teams and I want them to get that experience, but at the same time I’d like to see them play and evaluate them.”

SPORTS BRIEFS

Lions learn basics during summer season SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Lyons Township baseball is perennially one of the top teams in the state, and the Lions earn that distinction with the work they put in during the summer. The Lions carried 30 players on their summer team and consistently had 22 to 25 players at games even with several players competing in tournaments with travel teams. One of the big goals for LT head coach Kevin Diete during the summer is to hammer home his expectations for the players while at the same time auditioning pitchers and trying players at different positions in the field. Wins and losses aren’t as important as teaching the basics, but the Lions have had their fair share of wins this summer, including a 4-3 win against St. Ignatius in a playoff game July 13.

Chicago Bears Youth Football Camps coming to area

Providing safe, noncontact instruction for kids ages 6 to 14, the Chicago Bears Youth Football Camps are coming to the area starting July 20. Park View Elementary School in Glen Ellyn and Geneva Middle School in Geneva will host camps from July 20 to 24. Commissioners Park in Naperville will host a camp from July 27 to 30. With help from Chicago Bears alumni players such as Rashied Davis, Jason McKie, Jim Morrissey, Mickey Pruitt and Kris Haines, USA Football-certified coaches teach players how to run, throw, catch, defend and compete the Chicago Bears way. The cost is $239 for the week, and there are two camp options at each location. A Comprehensive Skills Camp is for newcomers ages 6 to 14. An Accelerated Skills Camp is geared toward experienced players ages 9 to 14. To register, visit www.bearscamps.com or call 312-226-7776.
