They have an invaluable relationship to each other. They are quintessential to understanding the Earth.” According to Briscoll, the monarch sanctuary is just one part of Gurrie Middle School’s Green Team curriculum, which invites students from across the district to learn about nature and their role in the local environment. Briscoll already has plans to put some of the garden’s harvest to good use. “Next Wednesday, we’ll be pickling and making gourmet ketchup,” Briscoll said. “We also grow cabbage to turn into sauerkraut and we’ll be making jams next week. It’s about partnering up our kids with local experts and

LA GRANGE – Just outside the library of Gurrie Middle School in La Grange is the students’ garden. The garden is home to pears, peppers and cabbages, which are grown and cultivated by students who learn about conservation, sustainability and their effect on the environment while tending the patch. On July 15, teachers, students and a local filmmaker teamed up to welcome a more temporary – yet honored – guest into the garden: Migrating monarch butterflies. Steve Briscoll, a teacher at Gurrie Middle School, and Eric Rejman, a filmmaker and photographer from La Grange, presented members of Gurrie Middle School’s Green Team with the highlights of a documentary on the monarch butterfly’s life and their annual migration from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Afterward, students got the chance to get their hands dirty by creating a monarch way station – planting a venerable buffet of milkweed and perennials that the monarchs love. For Briscoll, the butterfly garden wouldn’t have been a reality without the help of Rejman. “I met [Rejman] at an art show,” Briscoll said. “We didn’t have a purpose for the garden until … Eric donated the milkweed.” Working with nature, either from behind the camera or in the dirt, is familiar territory for Rejman. The last nature film he worked on, a documentary on climate change called “Tides of Change,” won best environmental documentary this year at the Canada Film Festival.

Green It Up! in La Grange to host essay contest Winner will receive storefront, remaining inventory at location By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – Since opening Dec. 1, 2012, Green It Up! Gift Stop, 74 S. La Grange Road, stands out as an environmentally conscious store offering toys, clothing and gifts with an emphasis on sustainability. Leah Kroeger, a resident of Clarendon Hills who created the business with her daughter, Becca Klinger, recently announced the time had come for them to move on from the business. However, that doesn’t mean Green It Up! will close its doors: The mother-daughter team plans to host an essay contest to find a person to pass the business along to. “The purpose of the contest is to look for new owners
for the store,” Kroeger said. “We’re paying it forward by holding an essay contest.” According to Kroeger, the online contest requires a $200 entry fee and asks for an essay to demonstrate, in 500 words or less, that they have the competency and passion to run an eco-friendly business. “Everyone will have a fair and equal opportunity to win,” Kroeger said. “The contest is based on [their] skill in their writing [and] they have to be honest and straightforward. They have to show their intent and show that they understand what it takes to run a retail store.” The winner of the contest, which will be chosen by Kroeger and her family, will receive the Green It Up! storefront, as well as the store’s inventory. “With a heavy heart we’re giving up this business, but with a great heart we are giving it to someone who may not
have the financial backing,” Kroeger said. “We are giving someone who may have the dream, but not the financial backing, the opportunity to own their own business.” The contest will end Sept. 1 with the winner scheduled to take ownership before November in time for the holiday season shopping, according to Kroeger. Until then, Kroeger asked that interested parties not contact her or her staff about the contest, as to maintain their integrity in the contest. “I’m excited to find out who gets it,” Kroeger said. “Personally, for me, to do that for someone, that makes me very happy; to create a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Information on the contest, including rules, forms and frequently asked questions can be found at www.winyourownstore.weebly.com. LA GRANGE – Staff at Anderson’s Bookshop’s new La Grange location, 26 S. La Grange Road, are working this week to get ready for the book store’s ribbon cutting and grand opening at 9 a.m. Aug. 1. “There will be a soft opening,” said Candace Purdom, publicity and events coordinator for Anderson’s Bookshop. “Perhaps ... Wednesday.” The opening of Anderson’s in La Grange has been hotly anticipated since plans were announced for the location in 2014. The village has been without a book shop since Borders closed its doors in 2011. In June, Anderson’s announced it would start an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to help get the store open. Currently, a total of $10,056 has been raised to the store’s $50,000 goal. The fundraising effort was started by Anderson’s to help defray the costs that come with opening. According to Purdom, the

new La Grange store will be open and in operation whether or not the campaign succeeds. “It’s still ongoing for a couple weeks,” Purdom said. “We don’t have specific items that are missing, but some of our wish list dreams are things that will have to wait. It’s an expensive proposition to open a new independent bookshop.” The Indiegogo campaign for Anderson’s Bookshop can be found at www.indiegogo.com/ projects/i-built-a-bookshop. Businessman taking over for Gorman as commissioner SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Members of the 17th Cook County Board District Committee selected Palos Township committeeman Sean Morrison as the district’s new Cook County commissioner during a July 22 meeting. Morrison re- Sean places Elizabeth Morrison Doody Gorman, who announced her resignation from the Cook County Board of Commissioners during a special board meeting July 15. According to a news release, Morrison is CEO and founder of Morrison Security Corporation in Alsip. He was the only candidate to submit his credentials and was overwhelmingly selected, according to the release. Morrison will fill the remaining three years of Gor-
man’s term. The 17th district includes all of Indian Head Park, La Grange Park, Lemont, Riverside and Willow Springs and parts of Bensenville, Berkeley, Brookfield, Burr Ridge, Countryside, Hillside, Hinsdale, Hodgkins, La Grange, Oak Brook, Westchester and Western Springs. According to the release, Morrison is active in Republican politics and was elected State Central Committeeman of the 3rd Congressional District. According to a July 15 news release, Gorman said she was resigning to take a position with a Fortune 100 company in Chicago. Gorman represented Cook County’s 17th District for nearly 13 years on the board. “My years of service on the Cook County Board of Commissioners have been some of the most rewarding of my life,” Gorman said in her letter of resignation.

By Linda Sokol Francis, E.A. HELP ON HEALTH CARE FOR SMALL FIRMS Rather than set up a health insurance plan of their own, some small companies reimburse their workers for the premiums they pay for individual policies or Medicare. Under the health-care law, however, those firms faced a hefty excise tax: $100 a day per worker. The IRS has granted temporary relief for companies with fewer than 50 full-time equivalent workers through June 30 of this year, and several in Congress are working on a bill to allow such plans to continue permanently on a pre-tax basis. Similar relief has been announced for S corporations. They, too, are protected from the $100-a-day tax when they reimburse health insurance premiums for those who own more than 2 percent of the corporation. They get an even better deal: their relief runs all the way through 2015 and maybe longer. The Internal Revenue Service is expected to publish further guidance on S corporation reimbursement plans. Larger companies will still need to prepare reports on health insurance coverage for each of their workers on Form 1095-C, and to the IRS on Form 1094-C, which will require more detailed information.

County sales tax hike is tough but necessary Last week the Cook County Board made the difficult, but necessary decision to increase the County’s portion of the sales tax by 1 percent. I voted in favor of the increase because it was the best way to solve Cook County’s pension crisis. Let me be clear: I did not want to increase taxes. My first instinct on every financial problem is to reduce spendCOMMUNITY ing and optimize operations. VOICE Since I joined the Board in Jeff 2010, we have closed deficits of $1.4 billion, decreased our Tobolski annual subsidy to the Health and Hospital System by $225 million and eliminated more than 2,000 positions. Cook County government went from being the laughingstock of the nation to a model for fiscal responsibility. After such success, why do we need to raise taxes? Pensions. Unlike other governments, Cook County was capped on how much it could contribute to its pension plan. Every year Cook County paid the maximum into the fund; however, even the maximum is not enough. The unfunded liability on our pension fund costs $1 million per day! In addition to the direct costs of the pension, credit ratings agencies have downgraded the County’s credit, which increases our debt payments on existing debt. Without action, the county would slide into a death spiral of increased costs. At $400 million per year, the problem cannot be solved with cuts alone. Revenue is required, and the sales tax is the fairest way to get the necessary revenue. Opponents of the sales tax increase have either not offered a solution to the problem or they suggest that we wait for Springfield to save us. The people of the 16th District did not send me to the County Board to throw up my hands and do nothing or to wait for someone else to fix our pension crisis. I refuse to pass the hard choices to others or expect future generations to pay because we lacked the courage to do the right thing. I sought the office of Commissioner because I wanted to reform county government. We have made difficult choices in cutting jobs and spending. Now we are making a tough choice to raise taxes. The end result will be a financially stable county government on firmer ground to attract business, grow jobs and reinvest in our communities.
Jeff Tobolski is the Cook County commissioner for District 16, which includes the municipalities of Berwyn, Cicero, Forest View, McCook, Hodgkins, Lyons, Summit, Willow Springs, Countryside, Western Springs, La Grange, La Grange Park, Westchester, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, Brookfield, Riverside, North Riverside and Stickney.

OUR VIEW
Real solutions for Cook County have to come from Springfield Now that the votes are counted and the sales tax hike is set to go into effect Jan. 1, the next step will be to monitor what effect it has on Cook County businesses and citizens. That’s a tough thing to quantify, as the big-picture data that tells you how a region is doing often takes months or years to compile and analyze. There’ll be anecdotal evidence by the cart load, as new businesses go elsewhere, and families pass up large purchases because everyday items cost more than they used to. While Suburban Life spoke out against the hike before it was passed and urged the Cook County Board to reconsider the plan, we haven’t lost sight of who the true villains are in this story – the leaders of the Legislature in Springfield who continue to ignore the issue of public pension underfunding. Since the make-believe effort passed under then-Gov. Quinn was predictably ruled unconstitutional by the Illinois Supreme Court, there has been no legitimate proposal

to address the issue in a way that will last. Sadly, at this moment state leaders can’t even agree on a much smaller issue, that of a state budget for the rest of the year. You could ascribe the gridlock to animosity between the political parties, but given that Speaker Michael Madigan has shown no inclination to cooperate with past governors of his own party, it’s hard to lay too much blame at the feet of Gov. Rauner just yet. All we’re left to do is shake our heads in disbelief that a single man – Madigan – can wield so much power for so long and yet retain his position even as the fiscal state of the state and of Cook County continues to deteriorate on his watch. Cook County is raising the sales tax to attempt to meet a $400 million deficit in its pension obligations. In the process, many new debts will be created, both literal and figurative. The debt that all of our political leaders owe to our poorest citizens and small business owners in good governance is massive, and growing at an alarming rate.

LOCAL SENIORS HAVE A GRAND SLAM OF A TIME AT THE BALL PARK Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home is celebrating 130 years of service to the community. For the last 30 years, the Conboy Family (Peter, Jean and Matt) has engaged with the local seniors by hosting their annual senior baseball outing. On Sunday, July 12, 2015, the Conboys took over 200 seniors from Westchester and the surrounding communities to a Schaumburg Boomers game. The seniors met at the funeral home to board the buses and head to the Boomer’s Stadium where a buffet awaited them in the Club House Room before the first pitch was thrown. The marvelous weather sugar-coated the Boomer’s 12-3 loss to the Florence Freedom. This is a tradition that the Conboy family is pleased to provide to the local senior community. Everyone looks forward to next years’ game! Later this year, the funeral home will host an open house celebration in honor of their 130th anniversary.

HINSDALE – It didn’t take long for the newly opened Fuller House to distinguish itself from other restaurants in downtown Hinsdale. A large and lively outdoor patio set the scene before my date and I entered an equally vibrant pub atmosphere. Greeted just inside the front door by the hostess, we first noticed the expansive bar centered on the ground floor of the two-story establishment. With the restaurant just a stone’s throw from the train station, it simply screams to be a gathering spot for the after-work crowd. Fuller House offers a variety of specialty cocktails, plus a solid craft beer selection we enjoyed sampling. Hungrily taking up our menus, we scanned the wide array of salads, pizzas, burgers and other hand-held items, opting for an appetizer to start. We considered the woodfired pretzel sticks with honey mustard and pimento cheese sauces, as well as a cheese and charcuterie plate, before settling on Wisconsin cheese curds with a zesty Southwest ranch dipping sauce. Lightly breaded and fried to a perfect crispiness outside, the curds had a wonderful texture. Several main courses tickled our fancies. My date contemplated the fried buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese crumbles, along with several of the wood-fired pizzas prepared in the blazing oven in plain sight on the edge of the dining area. She ultimately decided on the 10inch arugula and prosciutto pizza with lemon, garlic and an olive oil drizzle. None of the flavors were hidden – the earthy taste of the arugula, the saltiness of the prosciutto and the creaminess of fresh mozzarella – all intertwined in a delightful combination. Nearly every entree sounded appetizing to me, including the fish and chips, brisket tacos and pulled pork sandwich, but the burgers were

GAME REPORT CHICAGO RED STARS VS WASHINGTON SPIRIT SAT. JULY 25
RED STARS: 1 WASHINGTON SPIRIT: 1
Copyright Daniel Bartel
Another Press Stunner Earns Chicago 1-1 Tie at Washington Dunn scores late to prevent Spirit’s first home defeat of 2015 Germantown, Md. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars nearly handed third-place Washington Spirit its first home defeat of the season on Saturday night, with forward Christen Press giving Chicago the lead in the first half with a stunning long-range shot. League leading goal scorer Crystal Dunn tied the match in the final ten minutes of an entertaining game that saw Chicago deliver another strong showing to remain undefeated in four straight matches. The Red Stars, had the first promising look of the matchup in just the sixth minute of play: goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris did well to palm away a powerful shot from Canucks striker Adriana Leon. Washington created a chance of its own four minutes later, but Laura del Rio’s driven shot from inside the box was kept out by Canada international, Karina LeBlanc, who cleared the ball from her area. Press would give the Red Stars the lead in the 30th minute courtesy of her second goal in as many matches since winning the World Cup with the U.S. The 26-year-old found herself with time and space inside the Spirit’s half, she took a few touches from well outside the box before unleashing a rocket past an outstretched Harris and inside the left upright. Taryn Hemmings’ excellent work on the right could have given Press another goal in stoppage time of the first half, but the forward’s near post flick was deflected wide. Forward Jen Hoy had one last look for Chicago before the break: World Cup Golden Ball nominee Julie Johnston dribbled into the box on the right and delivered the ball to the former Princeton standout, whose attempt from close range was blocked by a Washington defender. In the second half, Red Stars center back Johnston had a pair of excellent clearances on both sides of a dangerous 56th-minute shot by the Spirit’s Dunn, who unleashed a left footed shot from just outside the area, only to see the ball whistle over

the frame. On the other end of the field Vanessa DiBernardo navigated around a defender on the right and picked out Hoy, whose close range attempt forced a point-black reflex save from Harris. Moments after Chicago defender Samantha Johnson’s 80th-minute challenge against Washington’s Dunn in the box was ruled to have been fair, the Spirit striker tied the match from the run of play, pouncing on the rebound from a blocked Christine Nairn effort. After controlling the ball, the 23-yearold Dunn drove a low, left-footed shot inside the left post that gave goalkeeper LeBlanc no chance to save it. Chicago immediately responded, but rookie sensation Sofia Huerta saw her right-footed curler from the left side of the box saved in spectacular fashion by Harris, who left her feet and tipped the ball out from behind her before it could find its way inside the far post. The Spirit subsequently created a pair of chances to win the game. First, substitute Hayley Raso released a cracker of shot that took a deflection and went wide of the left upright. Then, Ali Krieger found Dunn on the right, who then drove into the penalty area before firing toward the near post to force a diving save from LeBlanc. It took one last goal-line clearance from the Red Stars’ Johnston for the visitors to bag a valuable away point from the draw, which puts Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad two points ahead of second-place Seattle Reign FC in the standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to defend their top spot in the NWSL standings when they return home for an August 1 clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that is likely to feature several World Cup winners on both teams. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Abundance of offseason sports gives athletes plenty of options By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
Options abound
Sports Performance is one of the elite volleyball clubs in the country. The 18U red team won an AAU national title in June. Only three of the 12 matches the team won went to three games. It’s not just volleyball players who have a plethora of competition options in the offseason and are benefiting from extra coaching. AAU basketball is busy in the summer with players competing in tournaments across the country, including area teams such as Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite for boys and Illinois Lady Lightning for girls. Mercury Elite has several boys teams at multiple age levels plus three girls teams at the 14U level, a far cry from when the program first started nine years ago. “In the last three years, it’s gone from probably three to four teams to where it is now with 19 teams,” said founder Dave Ruggles, whose program

Benefits and drawbacks
For the athletes, there are obvious benefits to devoting time to a club team in the offseason. More hands-on coaching, time to work and improve on specific skills, and a chance to play against elite competition in front of college coaches. “I don’t like it, but I think you have to do it,” Morton varsity boys basketball coach Tony Martinucci said. “The shame of it is, and I’m going through this with my daughter now, you can’t really play multiple sports anymore. Everyone has gone into specialization now because if you don’t do it somebody else is going to do it and they’re going to get better than you.” In baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball, the college and high school seasons run concurrently, which limits the amount of time college coaches can devote to watching prospects in person. There also are NCAA restrictions regarding the amount of contact coaches can have with players at certain times, restrictions that are lessened during the summer, and since college coaches aren’t busy coaching their teams they are able to flock to the large tournaments and watch hundreds of the best Steve Bittinger - For Shaw Media players from across the country comMark Smith of Riverside Brookfield puts up a shot for The Athlete Within, his AAU team, pete.

It used to be that elite high school athletes had three jerseys in their closets – one for a fall sport, one for a winter sport, and one for a spring sport. Many high school athletes today still have three jerseys in the closet, although things are slightly different. Those jerseys are home and away high school jerseys for one sport and a uniform for a club team in that same sport. Increasingly, high school athletes are choosing to specialize in one sport with year-round competition spurred by a plethora of AAU and club programs. The downside is fewer well-rounded athletes representing their high schools, but there are plenty of benefits for high school athletes willing to specialize in one sport.

Top Tier, Longshots and 29ers are just a few of the more popular baseball programs, while the Beverly Bandits, Downers Grove Rebels, Illinois Chill and Lemont Rockers represent a handful of the many travel softball programs that feature players from throughout the suburbs.

Continued from page 22 “High school volleyball is not where the scholarships come from,” said Sue Keck, 1st Alliance Volleyball Club director and founder and former Immaculate Heart of Mary volleyball coach. “You pretty much have to play club to get that scholarship.” College has been the next step for plenty of 1st Alliance players. The Class of 2015 includes standouts Riley Burchett (Nazareth, Marquette), Cori Hansen (Lyons Township, Brown), Celine Jones (LT, Milwaukee), Hannah Juley (LT, Wisconsin), Julia Saunders (Nazareth, Wisconsin) and Jessica Skonning (LT, Manhattan). The invite-only 16U Beverly Bandits team is an extreme example of a travel team. In addition to players from south suburban Chicago and northwest Indiana, the Bandits have players that hail from Indianapolis, northern Wisconsin, Virginia and West Virginia. With so many far-flung players, practice during the summer is nearly nonexistent. “In the summer it’s usually just [playing] weekends,” said Ron Havelka, who coaches Downers Grove South softball in the spring and is an assistant with the 16U Bandits in the summer. Not all high-level teams eschew practice time. The Mercury Elite hold practices two or three times a week, which aids in skill development and team development. Longshots baseball works on position-specific skills during fall practices and has a winter program three days per week.
Both sides of the line?
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Athletes who decide to specialize in one sport have plenty of options to choose from. Club and AAU teams not only offer top-notch competition, but also the chance to get noticed by coaches at the college level. Here are just some of the organizations in the area that provide playing opportunities outside of high school and junior high.

There is something to be gained from staying sharp in the offseason and playing outside of high school, and there are some tangible benefits in the form of college opportunities, but that’s for each athlete to decide. “If you want to test yourself against the kind of competition you see at the AAU level, it’s going to give you an edge as a player,” said Jim Thomas, boys varsity basketball coach at Downers Grove North, a 17U coach with Mercury Elite and a former standout at Wheaton North. “But I don’t tell the kids at Downers North they have to play.”

Longshots Baseball, based in Downers Grove, has sent hundreds of players to college programs in 22 years of operation. Based out of Acceleration Sports Performance in Naperville, 29ers Baseball has a local flair. Top Tier, which bases its high school program at The Max in McCook, and DuPage Training Academy in Carol Stream draw from across the western suburbs.
Basketball
The AAU basketball scene has grown significantly in relevance in the past 20 years and a number of locally based teams are part of that growth. On the girls side, Lady Lightning is one of the premier programs. It starts with programs beginning in third grade and goes all the way through high school. The team typically has a number of Montini players, but draws players from all around the Chicago area. Lady Lightning had 11 players make college commitments in the Class of 2015. As for the boys, Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite each have local players. Lockdown was founded in 2011 by Joe Niego, who is a former NBA player and the father of Lyons Township players Harrison and Connor Niego. The Illinois Wolves also have a local tie with Mike Mullins founding the organization in 1999. Mullins had two sons, Bryan and Brendan, play at Downers Grove South before going on to play, and now coach, college basketball. Wheaton resident Dave Ruggles founded Mercury Elite and has had a number of local players go through the program. Downers Grove North varsity head coach Jim Thomas is also a coach in the Mercury Elite program.
Academy league, a nationwide collection of elite clubs in the under-18 and under-16 age levels, to a 10-month season starting in 2012. That meant players had to choose between playing for their club or their high school, and a number of top players have gone the club route. On July 18 the Chicago Fire’s U-18 team won the national championship in the league with local products on the roster. The team played the bulk of its schedule in the Midwest-based Mid-America Division along with other Chicago area teams, Sockers FC and Chicago Magic. The playoffs took place all over the country. As for girls soccer, the Elite Clubs National League is similar to the boys version. The year-round, travel-oriented league formed for the 2009-10 season. Local club Eclipse Select won the U-16 ECNL title last year. Unlike on the boys side, the girls can play for both club and high school, although not all do both.

Bandits softball, which includes the Beverly Bandits locally, has invite-only teams across the country. Illinois Chill is more local but plays in tournaments throughout the country. The Lemont Rockers and Downers Grove Rebels feature several local players.
Tennis
High school tennis teams typically boast some solid talent, but the level of competition at United States Tennis Association events gives athletes another outlet to test themselves. Kolie Allen from Glenbard East, Martin Joyce from Hinsdale Central, and Meg Kowalski and Gianni Ross from Lyons Township have found success on the USTA circuit this summer after starring for their high school teams during the most recent school year. Ross elected not to play high school as a freshman and then joined LT’s squad this spring.
Volleyball
Illinois is a hotbed for volleyball (Loyola University won the last two NCAA men’s titles, besting Lewis University this year), and club programs such as Sports Performance in Aurora and 1st Alliance, which practices at the Max in McCook, stoke the fire with Soccer nationally competitive teams. Both Recent changes in the soccer club programs have double-digit Division I landscape have had a major effect on players go through them in each gradhigh school teams.
