Editor's Note Man, it’s cold outside.

After returning from a whirlwind trip through Southeast Asia, where air conditioning is a godsend and sweating is like breathing, this suburban tundra has taken some getting used to.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve spent most of my time back home, indoors, often under a blanket, nursing a hot cup of coffee and trying to complete any and all tasks with the click of a mouse.

So, I’m hoping this month’s issue – the Health and Wellness issue – will light a fire under me to get outside and take advantage of all of the outdoor offerings that are only possible with the presence of snow.

Sledding, ice skating, pond hockey and an ice fishing derby are just a few local activities to help you pass the time while also enjoying the season. In “Wild Winter,” we offer even more ideas on how to stay active outdoors, from snowshoeing wintry wooded pathways to cross-country skiing more than 40 aggregate miles of nature trails.

In “Power of the Mind,” we discuss the benefits of meditation with Bhante Kanthale Sumana, a monk who teaches the practice at Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple in Woodstock.

“I recognize in this culture that meditation is very new,” he says in the story. “Many people don’t understand what meditation is ... It just means clearing the mind.”

Even though the holidays are behind us that doesn’t mean the celebrations should cease, especially since Norge Ski Club is hosting its 112th annual Winter Ski Jumping Tournament on Jan. 21-22. Gear up for quite a show (and quite a party).

Bill Murray fans will descend on Woodstock, once again in February, for Groundhog Days.

This year’s event will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film that gave Woodstock its brush with Hollywood.

PEACEFUL PLACES TO PRACTICE MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS

Coming out of the hectic holidays and into the doldrums of a Chicago winter can be difficult for anyone. Sure, it might be nice to relax for a week and curl up with a nice book and hot beverage, but – after a while – you have to shovel snow, go back to work and ennui sets in. Meditation can help you maintain a peaceful state of mind regardless of the pace you live your life.

Bhante Kanthale Sumana is a monk who teaches meditation at the Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple in Woodstock. Bhante means teacher.

The meditation that he teaches is funded by donations and isn’t religious.

“I recognize in this culture that meditation is very new,” he says. “Many people don’t understand what meditation is ... It just means clearing the mind.”

Sumana further explained that although sitting in silence is a kind of meditation, meditation – in general – is a way of being and something that can be practiced continually, like breathing.

everything with love and kindness.

Ann Waring is the Director of Yoga Seva in Crystal Lake. She says that many people might be familiar with active meditation because of yoga, but it can be more than that.

“There is mindfulness meditation, which may involve movement – a walking meditation would be a way to quiet the mind taking small steps and practicing being present with each step you take,” Waring says. “Music helps some people in the beginning, but silence is where the central nervous system benefits most.”

Meditation can be something that is done in silence for 15 to 20 minutes, but it eventually becomes a way of being.

Like yoga or prayer, there are various kinds of meditation. Waring says that her favorite is mantra. The “man” means mind and “tra” means vehicle.

“So, the mantra is the vehicle that when repeated silently changes neuron patterns and releases you from your recurring thoughts and concerns,” Waring says.

This kind of meditation is good for people who suffer from obsessive thoughts or worries – things that result in sleepless nights.

“Studies have shown that mantra meditation, when practiced on a regular basis, can reduce the effects of fight-or-flight responses which wreak havoc on the whole body,” she says.

Even without worry and obsessive thoughts, people are continually taking in so much information and holding onto it.

“It’s very hard to stay happy when you see so many things around – you see the TV and you want things, and you have to work – but when you’re focusing and practicing mindfulness meditation, you are happy in the moment and not excited,” Sumana says. “You enjoy everything that you feel at that moment. You can understand very clearly.”

For example, rather than hearing that your child received a particular score on an exam and worrying about how it might impact their class grade, you can redirect your attention to what’s most important, which is the love that you have for your child. Meditation cannot only ease how you transition from the hectic holidays to shaping the new year, it can create positive change in your life.

Starting off with short meditations is best until you can learn to focus your mind for longer

periods of time. Be compassionate with yourself and realize that trying to focus your mind is beneficial to your well-being, even if you don’t feel like you accomplished anything.

Heavy snow during the first two weekends of December triggered polar emotions among many in McHenry County.

For those belonging to team "Let it snow!" – or team "Oh, no! Not snow!" – McHenry County Conservation District communications manager Wendy Kummerer offers a salve.

"Get out on your own and go explore," Kummerer says. "We don't hibernate."

Numerous municipal park districts and recreation departments also offered options for staying active outside this winter.

If you think the “great outdoors” remains great even when there's white stuff on the ground, then sample these options for winter recreation offered by the Crystal Lake Park District, McHenry County Conservation District and Woodstock Recreation Department: ¢ CRYSTAL LAKE PARK DISTRICT "The Veteran Acres [Park] sled hill, I think, just has such a strong tradition," Crystal Lake Park District marketing manager Jenny Leech says. "A lot of people who grew up in Crystal Lake, some of their favorite memories revolve around that area as a winter fun spot. ... A lot of good memories, and I think a lot of people are sharing them with their kids now."

With its Babe Ruth and Nature Center hills, venerable Veteran Acres offers sledding (with lights) from dawn to 9 p.m. Restrooms and shelters are available. As with any outdoor park district activity, call the rainout line at 815-410-4475 for status updates.

-Continued from page 11 There's a lighted ice skating area at Main Beach, which operates from dawn to 9 p.m. and has a restroom on site. Park district employees inspect ice daily to ensure safe skating. There must be at least five inches of ice for open public skating.

Cross country skiing aficionados can explore trails at Lippold Park, Sterne's Woods and Butternut Preserve from dawn to dusk daily. Lights and warming facilities are not available at these venues.

On Jan. 28, the park district will host its Ice Games, an 18-and-older extravaganza at Main Beach, which Leech calls an "all-day special event."

In addition to the traditional Chili Open golf activities on Crystal Lake's nine-hole, par-32 golf course, there will be a 4-on-4 pond hockey tournament on two rinks. Leech says there's been burgeoning interest in bringing pond hockey to the lake. The cost is $195 per team for the double-elimination format.

All participants will receive a T-shirt, while teams reaching the championship game will be awarded a trophy and tournament jersey.

The Chili Open costs $120 per foursome. There are participation gifts and prizes. Spectators are welcome to attend the Ice Games. Concessions, beer and heated locker rooms are available. Golf runs will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the hockey tournament will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Crystal Lake Angler's Ice Fishing Derby also is set for Jan. 28, taking place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at West Beach. The cost is $10. Raffles, food, prizes and big fish cash will be offered. Email musky-pete@ sbcglobal.net for questions.

On Feb. 4, Lippold Park will host a men's 16inch Snowbird Softball Tournament. Teams are guaranteed two games. The tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the cost is $185 per team. ¢ McHENRY COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT The sled hill at Glacial Park, near the Wiedrich Barn amphitheater, operates as long as four inches of snow cover the ground, and the Lost Valley Visitor Center – open seven days a week – offers refuge from the cold.

Lost Valley also is where you can rent snowshoes at a cost of $10 a day. Men’s, women’s and children’s sizes are available, with rental time spanning from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Renters must leave a drivers’ license and a $20 cash deposit. Snowshoeing is canceled if the wind chill dips under 20 degrees below zero.

McHenry County offers more than 40 aggregate miles of cross-country skiing trails at these locations: Brookdale Multiuse trail; Exner Marsh; Fel-Pro RRR; Glacial Park; Harrison Benwell Conservation Area; Hickory Grove Highlands; The Hollows; Lake in the Hills Fen; Marengo Ridge; Pleasant Valley; Prairie Trail North; Prairie Trail South; Prairieview Education Center; Rush Creek; Silver Creek and Stickney Run. All trails are packed and tracked when there is at least four inches of snow covering the ground. (Visit www.mccdistrict.org for updated trail conditions.)

One new winter recreation offering stems from increased public interest. Silver Creek Conservation Area now offers a skate ski trail, a 1-mile trail loop that is packed, but not tracked. Skate ski trails are packed wider to allow for movement similar to rollerblading strides. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset.

Indoor ascent Kids discover a world of walls at local rock climbing gym

taying active early in life is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle now and in the long run. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical exercise each day. But only one in three children are active each day, according to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

Youth fitness programs are a great way for kids to start creating healthy habits, while getting one hour of exercise in a fun, social environment. The kids programs at North Wall Rock Climbing Gym in Crystal Lake are a unique way for children of all ages to get and stay fit.

top rope, tie knots and play different climbing games. The program focuses on balance, motor skills, flexibility and core strength.

“It’s very important for kids to become active when they’re young, because it’s an impressionable age,” says gym manager Steve Landon. “They’re developing skills and habits that are going to last a lifetime. If they’re not challenged when they’re young, and they try to start later, it can be a lot more difficult.”

“I think climbing is good for kids because it definitely challenges them when it comes to problem solving,” says Landon. “It’s a physical activity as well as a mental one.”

The programs at North Wall are designed to teach kids proper climbing techniques. This can include learning how to boulder, belay,

The after school program runs throughout the school year, from September to May. Each session is three weeks long and includes three consecutive Wednesdays of climbing lessons from 4 to 6 p.m.

Kids that want to try their hand at climbing before signing up for a program can drop in during open gym hours. Day passes are $7 for children age 9 and younger, and $10 for those ages 10 to 17.

“People turn a room into a home gym and it becomes the least used room in their house.

It’s a room with good intentions,” he says.

There are many people who join gyms in January, but – by Groundhog Day – the urge to be fit often gives way to the hassles of getting there and being there. If this sounds like you, the answer to your fitness ambivalence could be right in your own home. By transforming a spare room into a home gym, you can customize the space to fit your own needs. No worrying about other people’s sweat or having to adjust equipment for your size.

Durbin prefers to use a space that’s 90 percent free space and 10 percent equipment.

There are plenty of options for home gyms, from small and efficient choices to larger scale spaces that could rival local studios.

If you do create a space for exercising at home, Durbin encourages having a TV and inspirational images and quotes on the walls. It needs to be a space to which you are drawn and one that motivates you to achieve your goals.

Color trends in interior design are frequently fickle, quickly swinging from one side of the spectrum to the other. But for once, forecasters say that a single hue has entrenched itself as an ongoing favorite: GRAY “Gray, in all its variations, has emerged as the overwhelming choice of designers for spaces ranging from home interiors to elegant office settings, and everything in between,” says Debbie Zimmer, color expert for the Paint Quality Institute.

If you’ve decided to use gray as the dominant color in a room, Zimmer suggests that you first select an attractive gray paint for the walls; then ask the salesperson to show you the color formula.

Grays are practical, too. Since they work with so many colors, it’s easy to change the overall appearance of a room by simply repainting an accent wall in a different hue. Or, easier yet, introducing a new “punch” color by adding accent pieces like bright pillows and pottery.

There’s nothing better than skiing on a brisk, sunny day, says Paul Mazurek of Crystal Lake.

“It’s just so much fun,” says the 59-year-old. “I look forward to every minute that I get on the slopes.”

Mazurek is an excellent skier, having spent 10 years on the National Ski Patrol. But Rick and Laurie Pasturczak, owners of Alpine Accessories in Lake in the Hills, are a cut above him, Mazurek says, and their knowledge of ski equipment has earned his exclusive business.

“Rick is an encyclopedia of knowledge about skis, and Laurie is very, very knowledgeable about clothing,” Mazurek says. “[Their] personalized service, you don’t get that in a big box store.”

than they were in the 1970s and ’80s, which makes a big difference in performance, Pasturczak says.

“They got shorter, but they also got wider,” he says. “A wider ski gives you much more balance; it’s easier to maneuver with something shorter than longer, so learning … has been accelerated tremendously. [What once] took [skiers] three to four years to learn is now three to five months.”

Boots, meanwhile, have become lighter in weight and are easier to get on and off. Plus, Pasturczak offers custom shells that mold to the shape of your foot, perfect for those with foot problems.

Lynn Creegan of Dundee Township started shopping at Alpine even before the shop moved to Lake in the Hills in 2005. She hasn’t been to another ski shop since.

“I started skiing in the late 1950s,” the 68-year-old says. “I went through lots of boots, all different kinds. The last pair that I got, I got from Rick, and they’re by far the best…he helped me get over some rough spots that other boots were giving me problems with.

Through family health clinic, Kathy Rauch instills value of volunteering

When it comes to people, Kathy Rauch is a matchmaker.

says Rauch has a talent for bringing out the best in each volunteer.

As director of volunteers for Family Health Partnership Clinic in Crystal Lake, she connects people willing to donate their time to complete numerous tasks needed to keep the clinic running smoothly.

“She is so good at bringing out people’s gifts and talents,” Hoban says. “I think this is especially true for the youth and high school students, as she helps them to see it’s not just about service, but about meaningful service.”

“I’m always trying to create a win-win,” Rauch says. “It’s got to be a good fit for the clinic, as well as the volunteer walking in.”

Rauch says that she wants the younger volunteers to see their time at the clinic as an opportunity to learn life skills, as well as instill the tremendous value of volunteering.

The clinic, which started in 1996, has moved to several locations through the years, yet it retains its mission – to serve the uninsured. The clinic relies on community support, receiving no state or federal funding.

Rauch joined the clinic in 2005. She manages volunteers, who range from medical personnel – such as doctors and nurses, who donate their free time to care for patients – as well as volunteers, who assist with clerical work and other tasks needed to keep the clinic operations running smoothly.

“The clinic is very fluid as we’re meeting the needs of the community as they arise,” Rauch says. “The volunteers are woven in and so much a part of the clinic; you really can’t tell who is a volunteer and who is paid.”

Rauch says that her work involves more than assigning a person to a task. She meets one-onone with each volunteer to understand his or her interests and abilities and helps individuals find meaning in their work.

“I want to know what they want out of the [volunteer] experience,” Rauch says. “I want them to stay for a long time. I want them to have a passion for our mission like I do.”

Growing up, her parents set an example, as her father volunteered at church and her mother volunteered at local schools, she says.

Rauch has worked as a camp counselor and a camp director in Minnesota. She maintains ties to the camp through its foundation.

After college she was offered the position as race director of the Minnesota Finlandia Ski Marathon, an event she helped to create. The goal was to establish a 100-kilometer, two-day, cross-country ski race. Rauch designed the race and managed the host of volunteers who agreed to give their time to assist skiers.

“I was young and it was a great, exciting opportunity,” Rauch says.

Her work on the race soon led to an invite to work at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid as a timing official.

Her experience with the race and managing a host of volunteers came into play once again when she had the opportunity to work on the Care 4 Breast Cancer race. The once small event now includes more than 2,200 participants and 600 volunteers, Rauch says.

Rauch is a 2015 graduate of the Leadership Greater McHenry County, where she gained

in-depth understanding of the community while networking with others in similar leadership roles.

For the last three years, Rauch has served as president of the Crystal Lake Rowing Club. She had always wanted to learn how to row and, several years ago, she and her husband, Michael O’Grady, joined the club and took the six-week course to learn how, she says.

“It is a lifetime sport,” Rauch says, adding that members of the club represent a wide-range of ages. “And it is such a good all-body sport.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATOR When it comes to health care, Hadley Streng keeps finger on pulse of county

Streng remains active with the LGMC, serving on the curriculum committee, and she helps others find connections to gain a better understanding of the county.

As the Centegra Health System vice president of strategy and development, Streng leads her staff to study how health care resources can best serve the residents of McHenry County. She’s been a leader in various projects that dealt with Centegra Hospital-Huntley, Centegra Immediate Care Centers and the expansion of Centegra Physician Care.

Streng also serves on the board of directors for the nonprofit McHenry County Economic Development Corporation.

“The stronger our businesses are, the stronger our community is. It is about how can we work together. There is a lot of collaboration.”

As the county’s largest employer, Streng says that Centegra has an important role in working with other local businesses.

L

eading into the election, the markets appeared to be expecting a Hillary Clinton win. It has been my experience that markets like clarity, therefore when the election night results started to turn in Donald Trump’s favor, the market futures responded negatively. In fact, many experts predicted a Trump win would cause markets to react similarly to what we witnessed after the “Brexit” referendum in August – extremely volatile with major declines for a few weeks, only to watch it rebound significantly once all of the information was digested.

So when futures were down over 800 points, most in our office assumed we were in for a hectic Wednesday. But a crazy thing happened the day after the election: the market stabilized and (as of this writing) has been moving forward ever since, setting all-time highs on most of the major market indices.

I think most would agree this was an ugly election cycle, but as with all contests, a winner has been declared. The back and forth rhetoric may have been off the charts, but now that it has come to an end, we as investors must move on. Donald Trump is our current President-Elect and will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America on January 20, 2017.

We feel some of the recent gains in the markets can be attributed to Trump’s economic platform, which is very positive for businesses large and small. For instance, one of his policies is to lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 15 percent. This should encourage U.S. companies to stay at home versus going overseas which could lead to more jobs.

Trump also wants to allow companies to repatriate cash in foreign countries at a tax rate of 10 percent. The repatriated money can be used for more investment in new companies and in small businesses, which also could result in more jobs.

Companies have long complained of the burden and cost of increased regulations. His platform calls for a reduction of that burden, which could result in cost savings for many companies leading to higher profitability.

Of course with the good there also are some potential pitfalls.

Through the years, the owners at Expressly Leslie may have changed, but the crux of the restaurant has remained the same: fresh, homemade vegetarian food made daily with Middle Eastern flair.

The idea for the Expressly Leslie first started in 2007 when Leslie Cook started whipping up her favorite vegetarian food for festivals and farmers’ markets. Cook then opened up a brick and mortar spot in Caputo’s in Algonquin before finding the current home in the market in Woodstock, 110 S. Johnson Street, in 2009.

“We’ve been here ever since,” manager Laura Owsley says. “A lot of restaurants can’t say that. We’re growing and have new people here every day.”

Owsley has been the constant through the years, working diligently behind the scenes to provide the beloved vegetarian food even after Leslie decided to move on from the restaurant.

Owsley originally started working for Leslie around 10 hours a week just to help out, and now she is a full-time manager and the brain behind most of the food served.

“All of our food is made from scratch daily,” Owsley says. “Nothing gets opened from a container and dumped in a pot. A lot of people can come here because we make everything from scratch.”

The restaurant is counter-service based, with a lot of their business coming from carry out orders. There are only 6-7 indoor tables for seating, but in the summer, they have tables outside as well.

During the winter months, there is always a fresh pot of either soup or chili on the stove.

Due to the nature of the business and the daily quantity and demand, sometimes food options run out as the day goes on.

“You can’t walk in anywhere and get homemade hummus and falafel,” Owsley says. “Our pita is made fresh from a bakery in Chicago, all of our beans are 50-pound bags www.nwherald.com/magazine

of dried beans. I can’t just run to the Jewel and get some of the items we need to make our food.”

eggplant salad, mozzarella, an avocado corn salsa on top with chipotle mayo and a wedge of lime.

You don’t have to be a vegetarian or vegan to enjoy their extensive menu, because many of the food options don’t even come across as meatless. Expressly Leslie doesn’t offer tofu or fake meats, but Owsley notes that many of their food items are hearty and bear a resemblance to meat. One of the notable meals is the mushroom sloppy Joe, which she says you can’t even tell are mushrooms.

Another fan favorite is a twisted omelet, which is a three-egg omelet with spinach, mushroom, feta cheese rolled up in a pita.

“All of our food is vegetarian and mostly vegan,” Owsley says. “But not even all of our customers are vegetarians.”

Daily specials highlight some of their customer favorites, including a very popular southwest pizza on Tuesdays. It features a smoky black bean hummus, red peppers, DINING & ENTERTAINING

“It’s a hearty thing,” Owsley says.

Expressly Leslie has a focus on vegetarian foods, but since they make everything from scratch, they have the capability of catering to anyone with dietary needs like gluten-free or vegan food.

Leslie may not be around her restaurant anymore, but in addition to the legacy she left with her delicious food and healthy lifestyle contribution, she also left one other thing behind: a plaque that reads, “It’s worth the wait.”

EYES TO THE SKIES Norge Ski Club to host 112th annual Winter Ski Jump Tournament

A

thletes perched atop the ski jump scaffolding on a clear day at Norge Ski Club can behold the distant splendor of the Chicago skyline.

Norge president Scott Smith eagerly extolls the views as “unbelievable,” and rightly so.

Still, club officials argue the sights are no less breathtaking from the bottom of the hill.

Spectators will see for themselves on Jan. 21 and 22, when Norge hosts its 112th annual Winter Ski Jump Tournament at its facility at 100Ski Hill Road in Fox River Grove.

“It’s unusual to have an international Olympic sport pretty much in your backyard,” Norge corresponding secretary Gene Brown says. “I think for a lot of people in the Chicago area, it gives them a rare opportunity to see what’s available. It’s a festival-like atmosphere.”

Tickets cost $10 in advance and $15 at the gate, and they are good for both days of competition. Concessions, pop and various alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Smith, a Cary resident since the late 1960s, is approaching his 30th year in coaching. He says the athletes haven’t been the only entity associated with soaring in recent years.

Ski jumping lends itself to enthusiasm, both from the athletes, who revel in their temporary ability to fly, and the fans, who await the jumpers’ landings.

also can witness the skills of international jumpers. As of press time, Smith says that teams from Finland and Norway would be part of the tournament, and Slovenia was finalizing its participation. A Russian contingent may descend upon Fox River Grove, too.

Smith can attest to the thrills from multiple perspectives. Before he became a coach and club official, he excelled as a jumper, nearly qualifying for Team USA at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Smith began training at Norge at age 7, shortly after his family relocated to Cary from Michigan.

“Well, I was kind of a gutsy kid, and I tried it and I loved it – going off the jump and flying, you know,” says Smith. “And then as you progress and go off bigger hills and start to fly even more, it’s even more fun. Just the flying part of it, you know, kept me going. That’s pretty much all it is with everybody.”

Groundhog Days to celebrate 25th anniversary of film release

t’s a funny thing about Groundhog Days in Woodstock...

one, with several new activities planned throughout the festival.

It keeps happening over and over again.

It’s no secret that in 1992, the comedic classic “Groundhog Day” – in which weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) relives Feb. 2 repeatedly – was filmed in Woodstock.

The movie was released the following year, and it didn’t take long for those involved with the film to decide Groundhog Day was a day that should be celebrated, says Rick Bellairs, a member of the Woodstock Groundhog Days Committee. He also was extra in the film.

Thus, Woodstock’s Groundhog Days was born.

The activities surrounding the event have increased and its popularity has grown, resulting in the winter festival becoming a five-day event.

This year, it will run from Wednesday, Feb. 1, through Sunday, Feb. 5, mostly within the Woodstock Square.

“Nobody had any clue that the movie would have such legs, that it would become such a cult classic, and it would be so memorable,” Bellairs says.

Bob Hudgins, the location manager for Columbia Pictures, who worked with director Harold Ramis to select Woodstock as the filming site, has returned almost yearly to lead walking tours through several areas that housed favorite movie scenes, such as the Public House of Woodstock where Murray and Andie MacDowell drink to world peace.

Hudgins will lead tours again this year, but he’ll also host “The Making of ‘Groundhog Day’ with Bob Hudgins” at 3 p.m. Feb. 4. draw such large crowds each year, but it does.

Visitors have traveled from Canada, Germany and Australia to attend the festival, and depending on the weather, up to 1,000 people attend certain events, Bellairs says.

“Rather than following him around the Square on a cold Saturday afternoon on a walking tour, people can come inside in the warm [Woodstock] Opera House and hear his tales of the making of the movie,” Bellairs says.

“Whether you’ve seen the movie or not, liked the movie or not, we have turned Groundhog Day into our little mid-winter festival,” Bellairs says.

“We try to make it a bright spot in the middle of winter.”

New this year

That might be a must-see presentation, as this will be Hudgins’ last year at the festival, says John Scharres, managing director of the Woodstock Opera House, who worked as a liaison between the city and the production company during filming.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the movie, and it will be a memorable

was on the movie [site]. He’s very graciously come back year after year … . You probably could make a movie about making the movie, [like how] the groundhog bit Bill Murray twice and tried to escape. [Bob] has shared those [stories] and taken people on walking tours [for years].”

Also new to the festival lineup will be the Woodstock Willie Beer Tasting Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Waverly Room.

Proceeds will benefit the Child Advocacy Center of McHenry County.

Other new events will include Groundhog Day Bingo from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Lotus Temple; a Woodstock Groundhog Day Pub Crawl from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, featuring Groundhog Day drink specials at bars around town; and a Groundhog Day Movie Memorabilia display featuring sketches of some of the sets left behind from Columbia Pictures. The event is meant to spark open conversation about the movie, says Bellairs, and it will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Woodstock Public Library.

Traditions continue It wouldn’t be Groundhog Days without the classic events that have repeated themselves almost as many times as Bill Murray stepped into that large puddle in the film.

That includes the awakening of Woodstock Willie, a relative of the groundhog featured in the movie, which will kick off the festival at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Woodstock Opera House, and the prognostication, which is a re-enactment of the movie’s Groundhog www.nwherald.com/magazine

Day ceremony. The prognostication has drawn 1,000 people in good weather and will take place at 7 a.m. Thursday on Woodstock Square. If Woodstock Willie sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are supposedly ahead. If not, spring should arrive early.

Another favorite festival is the opportunity to watch a free showing of the movie at the Woodstock Theater.

“Groundhog Day” will run at 10 a.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The annual Groundhog Day Dinner/Dance will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday at the Woodstock Moose Lodge. At noon Saturday, the lodge will host the Groundhog Day Chili Cook-Off, which typically draws 200 to 300 people, who vote for the People’s Choice chili, Bellairs says.

Finally, free walking tours of filming sites with Hudgins will take place at 9 a.m. Thursday and 1:30 p.m. Saturday “I think it’s just been fun for [Bob],” Bellairs says. “He has talked about how the City of Woodstock embraced this movie so long ago and keeps the celebration going. I think he’s just enjoyed being part of it.”

Stargazer’s Ball celebrates the arts In November, the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake hosted its largest annual fundraiser, the Stargazer’s Ball, on Nov. 18 at the Bull Valley Golf Club in Woodstock.

The black-tie gala raised funds for the theater’s operational needs.

“We are off to a great start, and – this year – we have an outstanding opportunity with a 1-to-1 matching grant of $50,000,” executive director Richard Kuranda says in a news release. “We hope that others will join us in supporting this great center.”
