stage, they asked me to stay. They had a gift for me. Modern Cleaners was a family owned business and they were still going strong all these years later. Someone checked to find that they still had all those unclaimed bright green hockey sweaters. George’s was marked with his name. Sixty-five years later, it looked brand new. They found the son of the team captain. He had inherited all the hockey sticks with the names on them. And, they got a puck from that 1948 title game. They sawed down the stick and put it all in an air tight display with George’s picture. Yikes! I was very touched. I thought about what my parents had gone through in the 1930s and 40s. And how that hockey game put closure to the previous 19 years of the Depression and the War. Fast forward again. Another seven years. Grady and his aunt (my niece), went to a semi-pro hockey game. Grady loved it and had to know more about the sport. His aunt told him, “Your great grandfather was a good hockey player. But, that’s all I know. Jon is coming for a visit next week. We’ll ask him about George.” Our house is pretty tidy. No thanks to me and the cat. I certainly wouldn’t want to leave my birth certificate laying around if I expected to see it again. That said, I figured this would be a good time to do my part in eliminating clutter. I went to Iowa with the large display case containing the sweater, hockey stick and puck. I told Grady the story and he listened quietly. Then, I asked if he would be in charge of the artifacts. I
suggested that there was no better person to have them... and maybe keep the story alive for another 73 years. He walked over and gave me a sincere hug. Many of America’s wars have a common thread. They were fought by Citizen Soldiers who had better things to do, but took up the cause. Although the battles shaped the personalities and values of those volunteers and draftees, the military service did not define who they were. Their service was an unselfish act of interrupting their lives, protecting our country, and ‘hitchhiking’ back to their friends and families. George was a good athlete and became a good warrior. He was a good dad who loved his family and a good citizen until the day he died. I suspect Grady is the guy to keep those values alive. When George’s ship took that Kamikaze attack, they shot down one of the suicide planes. They recovered the body of the pilot and found a letter from the Japanese Emperor in the flight jacket. George’s commanding officer had the letter translated and printed copies for every sailor on board. George put the letter above his workbench in our basement... but no one else ever read it or even knew what it was. The letter stayed there for nearly 60 years. When the house was sold, my sister and I gently took it down, grasped its significance, and had it laminated. It is kept with a couple things from my war that still touch my soul. And it’s kept with respect for all veterans on this day.

Grundy County Veterans Legacy Center and Museum By Allison Selk
Carter Corsello had a vision to capture the legacy of veterans from Grundy County through photos, stories and artifacts, and that vision came to fruition in the Grundy County Veterans Legacy Center and Museum. Four years ago, after visiting a war museum in Pontiac, Corsello, a retired Army officer, decided to make the empty space on the second floor of the Morris American Legion Post 294 more usable and to build a place to honor veterans from Grundy County. He wanted the center to not only feature veterans from the American Legion, but from all over the county with legacy as one of the key words – his goal was to tell the story of the veterans, honor veterans by learning about history and educate about those who served. “Coinciding with this, I decided to become the historian at the Legion. I filled a table with the basics, the very beginning. I talked to professors and museum guys and they said most museums start with one table and they get better exhibits and grow,” Corsello said. Corsello cleaned up the stairwell, added a chair lift and made the space a place to gather stories for generations to explore. He has received donations from people who currently live in the area, and some from those who wish to honor a loved one who served in the military. He has archived, copied and made books out of a myriad of pieces of history as well as created displays with the donations. The walls and rooms have come alive with military history from war and peace time, and time spans of centuries. He shared the notes of a postcard from Frank Perucca of Morris at Great Lakes U.S. Naval Training Center to Tom Feehan of Morris in 1945. The post card writes: “Tom, Boy I can’t wait ‘till you get here. Got here to late for chow, have yet to eat, nothing to sleep on but springs, no equipment of any kind and it doesn’t
seem as if we’re getting anywhere. You’ll love it, Frank.” Corsello said of the postcard, “Why do veterans talk about the most miserable training events like boot camp with the fondest language. It’s the commonality of service to one’s nation. Common misery of those that serve…we are all in it together so make the best out of it.” Mark Stevens of Morris brought in one of the newest pieces, a footlocker owned by his great grandfather, William Zschau of Dwight, who was stationed at Ft. Bliss from 1916 to 1918. Stevens, who spent 23 years in the Air Force, told the story that after Pancho Villa killed 17 people in Mexico, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson contacted Army General John J. Pershing to take a unit into Mexico to find Villa and bring him to justice. His great grandfather was part of that unit as an ambulance driver. Villa was not found on that mission and after his time at Ft. Bliss, Zschau returned to Dwight and ran the greenhouse. “This has been in my basement for 30 years. I thought this was appropriate to donate, I’m a resident of Grundy County and my great grandfather lived in the area,” Stevens said of the donation. Corsello even archived his personal Hamm radio tapes from two phone calls to his mother when he served in Somalia. His mother asked how he was doing and if he wanted her to send flowers to his girlfriend because it was Valentine’s Day. “I told her no as a joke, then said yes, go ahead. She didn’t hear it. Mom called two weeks later and said she cancelled the flowers for my girlfriend because I said no,” Corsello said. The public can visit the Grundy County Veterans Legacy Center and Museum located at the Morris American Legion Post 294, 212 W. Washington, from 8 to 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Corsello has hopes to

Morris VFW Post 6049 Keeps Afloat During Covid-19 By Allison Selk
In March 2020, the Morris VFW Post 6049 closed its doors for business in response to COVID-19 mandates, let go of 11 staff and did not return to business until early July, but strong business and money management kept it afloat. “When we got the word to shut down, we had to look at the bookings in the banquet hall, the Queen of Hearts game was frozen, and the bar shut down,” post Commander Jerry Zeborowski said. Although the post did not have payroll due to the shutdown, bills such as heat, lights, insurance, water, sewer, taxes, business license and more were still due. Revenue was also lost due to event cancellations in the hall. Zeborowski said some rescheduled, others were refunded money. Zeborowski said he did not seek a loan to cover costs, because the Queen of Hearts game, video poker, pool tables and the busy bar gave them the cushion needed to pay the bills through lost revenue. “We are doing ok. I was wise enough to understand we need to have a bank account. I didn’t want to get caught not being able to pay
bills.” Zeborowski said. Over the past few years the Morris VFW has undergone major upgrades to bring the 1966 building up to current codes, replacing signs, siding, parking lot, bars, electrical, bathrooms, floors, kitchen and windows. Zeborowski said the post received an energy grant from ComEd to use LED lights, and heat and air units are maintained on a schedule to make the older structure more energy efficient. Zeborowski said these upgrades have led to less fix-it projects, which saved money in repairs – a must when the business was shut down for almost four months. When the Morris VFW reopened in July, all staff were asked to come back, but the business would not be the same. Zeborowski said the food and prep costs were too high, so food service was suspended except for the Friday Fish Fry. Due to mandates, the number of patrons allowed changed from 250 down to 50 in the banquet hall, and from 200 down to 50 in the bar. “The busy nights we used to have are non-existent anymore; it’s a big financial loss. We are slowly coming back, but nowhere near where we
were before the pandemic,” Zeborowski said. The Queen of Hearts game and 50/50 raffle have returned to Monday nights, Fridays are the Fish Fry and Karaoke, the bar has TV, sports games and video poker, all back for the patrons. “With the Fish Fry Friday, we will make a few bucks on it and provide something for the public to come to. We have a lot of repeat customers, including my wife and myself. We are serving a good product, people will come back,” Zeborowski said. On top of the finances for the business end of the Morris VFW, the post contributes to the community in several ways. Some have stopped and others have been able to survive due to surplus funds. The Voice of Democracy high school and Patriots Pen elementary scholarships will remain sine they are funded through an endowment with the Community Foundation of Grundy County. The VFW also supports local sports teams, but with the teams shut down, that support has been held off, which offers a savings. The Morris VFW supports veterans at Thanksgiving with a donation of
enough groceries to get them through Thanksgiving to Christmas. Normally, this endeavor was funded through the sales of poppies, but the sale was cancelled. Zeborowski said the finances from the sales of past years will allow the veterans to continue to be fed. “Morris is a tremendous supporter of veterans,” Zeborowski said. “We have enough funds from years past and then we will hit it (poppy sales) hard in the spring to build up revenues.” Perhaps the hardest part of COVID-19 shut downs for the Morris VFW was the cancellation of its Memorial Day events in downtown Morris. Each year schools, clubs, businesses and veteran organizations march in a parade, which ends at the courthouse where speakers tell of their service or the service of a family member to a group gathered under the trees. This year on Memorial Day it was silent. “It’s sad. It’s a very special day as we honor those we lost in war and not being able to do that was disheartening,” Zeborowski said. “Overall, we were very fortunate,” Zeborowski said of the COVID-19 shutdown and mandates.
With Respect, Honor and Gratitude Thank you for your Service!
