ARS Auto Repair A Cornerstone of Trust and Reliability

For over 25 years, ARS Auto Repair has been a cornerstone of trust and reliability in the heart of Mendota, offering the community unparalleled service and commitment. Established in 1999 by Eugene Bodmer, what began as a humble operation with three rented service bays at 3B Auto Service quickly grew into a thriving business. Following Duane Bodmer’s retirement, Eugene took over the shop, bringing with him a passion for high-quality work and deep dedication to his neighbors. His reputation for honesty and expertise soon assembled a loyal following.

As ARS Auto Repair flourished, it became clear that expansion was necessary to better serve their growing clientele. The business relocated to a larger facility at 307 Plaza Drive, providing a state-of-the-art workspace that matches their commitment to excellence. Today, Eugene and his son, Grant, co-manage the shop, ensuring that the family values which laid the foundation of the business continue to thrive. Grant, who has spent his life in and around the shop, carries on his father’s legacy with the same dedication and work ethic, making ARS Auto Repair a true family venture.

The expert team at ARS Auto Repair is well-versed in a wide array of automotive services, from routine maintenance like oil changes to complex engine and transmission repairs. They also specialize in brakes, front end, suspension, and cutting-edge electrical diagnostics, making ARS the go-to destination for all automotive needs. Armed with advanced diagnostic equipment, the technicians are able to pinpoint issues quickly and efficiently, giving customers peace of mind and saving them valuable time.

At ARS, customer service is the driving force behind everything they do. Their commitment to transparency and integrity shines through in their free repair estimates and the way they strive to make the repair process as seamless and stress-free as possible. With a welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable staff, customers can trust that their vehicles are in the hands of professionals who genuinely care about their well-being.

As ARS Auto Repair marks its 25th anniversary, Eugene and Grant reflect proudly on their journey, cherishing the relationships they’ve built and the many families they’ve helped along the way. Looking ahead, they remain steadfast in

their mission to uphold the values that have defined ARS: quality, integrity, and community.

For appointments, call 815-538-2412— same-day service is often available. ARS Auto Repair isn’t just about fixing cars; it’s about building lasting relationships and ensuring every vehicle leaves their care ready for the road ahead. Taking steps to community improvement

Making life better in Mendota, city leaders take steps to create new avenues for revitalization, recreation, art and safe paths for students to take to school.

Walking is a great form of exercise for all ages and the city is working to improve the community’s walkability and ensure safer routes for students as they travel to school.

In 2024, the city of Mendota received two Safe Routes to School grants, totaling $350,000 to improve routes for students walking to Lincoln and planning safer routes to Northbrook, Blackstone and Mendota High Schools.

In a recent survey of Mendota residents, sidewalk improvement and bike paths were named as urgent needs for the community, with students traveling to schools and they have to navigate areas without sidewalks as well as broken, buckled and

The city also received a grant that established a Mendota Walkability Team who received training to identify and create a plan to improve the ability for pedestrians to

The EPA’s Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup and Revolving Loan Fund grant programs will help transform once-polluted, vacant and abandoned properties into community assets. Mendota was one of seven communities in Illinois to receive the grant money in 2024.

In an act to further beautiful the downtown, the Mendota City Council unanimously approved the establishment of an Art Commission in October. The Art Commission will create a forum for proposing art, murals and décor in the community with a focus on the downtown.

Sublette Farmers Elevator Co.

Sublette Farmers Elevator was formed as a cooperative in 1919, owned by area farmers originally for the purpose of buying and selling of grain, coal, lumber, building materials and other merchandise and commodities used by farmers. Over the years, the elevator’s focus has shifted to drying, storage and merchandising of grain, but the cooperative also still operates a full-service lumber and building materials business, supplies local farmers and communities with fertilizer, livestock and pet feed, seed, culverts, utility poles, ammunition and Redneck Deer Blinds. Sublette Farmers Elevator continues to distribute profits back to stockholders based on the amount of business it has transacted and remains a viable part of the local economy.

Sullivan’s Foods

Over the decades, Mendota’s hometown grocery store has seen its share of names and rebranding – Classon’s, Thompson Food Basket, and, most recently, Sullivan’s Foods. Regardless of the name on the building, the foundation of the store has always been the same: serving the community.

“We’re proud to service the town and surrounding areas,” said Dylan Inman, Sullivan’s Foods Store Director. “We strive to meet the needs of our guests every day and support our community in a way to help drive it forward.”

Since arriving in 2000, Sullivan’s Foods has been an essential staple in the community. The grocery store donates to the local food pantry multiple times a week and, in collaboration with Shaw Media, hosts an annual large-scale food drive. In addition, Sullivan’s Foods has

created strategic partnerships with local organizations including the Lions Club, Mendota Area Senior Services, the police and fire departments, and more to better support these groups who strengthen the community.

In 2023, it was announced that the Mendota store, and all 11 Sullivan’s Foods locations, will change ownership again. The store was acquired by Saint Cloud, MN-based Coborn’s, Inc., an employee-owned grocery retailer with locations across the Midwest. The name, Sullivan’s Foods, will remain the same

and so will the store’s community foundation.

Coborn’s has a strong and long tradition of community giving dating back to the first store in Sauk Rapids, MN. Over 100 years later, the company is still driven by the desire to support the communities who continue to support them.

Each year, Coborn’s donates more than $3.5 million in financial contributions and thousands of volunteer hours to the communities it serves.

“Coborn’s is family-operated and shares the same values that make the Mendota area a prominent place to live,” said Inman. “They not only invest in their stores but in their employees and communities. We’re excited to join forces to create an incredible shopping experience for our guests and better serve the people of Mendota.”

New space adds to Black Bros. legacy

Black Bros. Co. — the world’s leading manufacturer of laminating and roll coating equipment established in 1882 — is pleased to introduce the new 18,200 square-foot Roll Manufacturing Building at its Mendota headquarters.

The new space is where the company’s complete process of steel-roll machining and rubber vulcanization takes place. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Simonton says it offers a big improvement over its predecessor built in 1907.

“It provides a far-better working environment, a very nice, clean space with climate control and more efficient workflow,” he said. “Rubber is like a musical instrument; it expands and contracts with different weather. We believe tightening up the temperature range is key to having more consistency in the manufacturing of the rolls.”

The project, which began in late Feb., officially came to a close last month as machinery was transferred across campus with production as normal following shortly after. Simonton estimated it is the eighteenth Black Bros. expansion since establishing homebase and the first since 2000, when a 42,000 squarefoot project nearly doubled the compa-

ny’s overall footprint.

“Hopefully the new building is just another stepping stone to growth down the road for the next chapter of Black Bros.,” he said.

for customers across multiple industries, the company’s machinery can be found on six of the seven continents across the globe. Black Bros. employs 65 associates in Mendota and its satellite location in High Point, NC.

Mendota Chamber

Promoting economic development across the community, the Mendota Chamber of Commerce has created a website that is a hub of information from events, entertainment and job postings too.

“We’re striving to be an information center for Mendota,” explained Sam Setchell, President and CEO of the Mendota Chamber of Commerce.

There’s always something to do and the events calendar is full of ideas from seasonal favorites to local trivia nights, pancake breakfasts and much more. The events calendar features activities in town and from the surrounding communities.

“Tourism is a big part of economic growth in Mendota. We want to bring in people to our community and have

information for local residents as well,” Setchell said.

Each year the Mendota Chamber members and volunteers produce the Easter

Hop, the Mendota Christmas and the annual Mendota Sweet Corn Festival which drew an estimated 40,000 visitors over the multi-day event

this past year. Funds raised at the festival stay local.

The chamber’s gift certificate program continues to prove a popular option to support local businesses and provide a gift that recipients can use at a number of locations. Setchell said approximately $18,000 has been spent in chamber gift certificates among Mendota Chamber members. She added it’s a popular choice for gifts during the holiday season.

Chamber members enjoy great benefits including free job postings on the Mendota Chamber website, helping to reach a large audience at no cost.

“There’s no subscriptions and we’re able to get the posts up quickly, helping small businesses as well as larger industrial chamber members too,” Setchell said.

An astounding 828 people were in attendance for the final games and annual season-end “Be A Trojan” event.

The Mendota Y doesn’t only offer programs for youth. The Adult Soccer League saw significant growth with an inaugural men’s division. The women’s division has been running for 3 years. This year 5 men’s teams competed for the first time, joining the 4 women’s teams in bringing huge energy to the Lake Mendota Sports Complex.

Local Businesses Gain a Boost with Fiber-Optic Internet Services

As businesses in the region continue to adapt and grow, access to reliable, high-speed internet has become a vital tool for success. Surf Internet®, a local provider serving the Great Lakes region, is expanding its offerings to meet the evolving needs of businesses, from small startups to larger enterprises.

With its Business Fiber Internet plans, Surf Internet delivers speeds up to 1 Gig, along with options for larger businesses that include guarantees for uptime, speed, and performance. These offerings come with the added benefits of no long-term contracts, a price-lock guarantee, and free professional installation. This flexibility allows businesses to focus on growth without worrying about fluctuating costs.

Surf Internet’s presence in Mendota became well-known in 2017 after merging with Terry’s Computer Shack, a local business that had long been dedicated to improving connectivity in the area. At that time, Surf provided wireless internet services to the community. In 2022, the company expanded its offerings by introducing highspeed fiber-optic internet, marking a significant upgrade in speed and reliability for businesses and residents alike.

“It’s been satisfying. It’s fast. It’s running Scooters. It’s fast-paced and seems to keep up with our point of sales system and everything we need

Surf Internet has been working diligently to bring fiber internet to rural communities. CEO Gene Crusie recently helped residents complete Indiana Connectivity Program (ICP) forms for submission. ICP is a program that aims to connect residents and businesses that lack access to broadband internet service with service providers.

it to do,” said Mary VanKeulen, owner of Scooter’s Coffee in Mendota. “We were a new construction and Surf is what we went with from the very beginning. It seemed like the right thing to do as far as speed. It was comparable in price to competitors,” VanKeulen continued.

UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS OF FIBER-OPTIC TECHNOLOGY

Fiber-optic internet stands apart because it can transmit data at the speed of light through thin strands of glass. This technology allows information to travel much faster than conventional internet services, making it ideal for businesses with high bandwidth demands. Unlike tradi-

tional broadband, fiber isn’t subject to slowdowns due to shared bandwidth, providing consistent speeds even during peak usage times.

For businesses, this means improved efficiency and the ability to support multiple users and devices simultaneously without interruptions. Whether it’s managing e-commerce platforms, conducting video conferences, or handling large data transfers, fiber-optic internet offers a dependable solution to keep operations running smoothly.

BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN RURAL AREAS

Access to high-speed internet, like the fiber-optic connections offered by Surf, has opened new opportunities in

the region’s more rural areas. Enhanced connectivity enables remote work, distance learning, telehealth services, and streaming entertainment, helping local communities access opportunities and resources beyond their region.

Surf’s commitment to expanding its fiber network across Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan has brought these advantages to over 600 communities, reaching more than 100,000 households and supporting 100 school systems. With deep roots in the region, Surf takes pride in being a part of this digital transformation.

TAILORED SOLUTIONS FOR BUSINESS GROWTH

In today’s business landscape, fast, reliable, and secure internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Surf Internet recognizes the diverse needs of local businesses and is dedicated to offering scalable solutions that grow alongside them. With Surf’s fiber-optic services, companies can confidently meet the demands of a digital world, whether that means providing seamless connectivity for employees or offering top-tier service to their customers.

For more information on how Surf Internet can support your business’s connectivity needs, visit https://surfinternet.com/business/fiber/.

Mendota home to ADM’s largest flour mill

ADM’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in one project — continues to proudly reside in Mendota.

The Archer Daniels Midland Flour Mill can produce more than 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts to be exact) and employs 40-50 people.

The facility, for which construction began in June 2017 and was completed in 2019, can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties plus two types of whole wheat. Production started around September 2019.

Why did ADM choose Mendota for the mill? ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, already had an existing ADM grain transfer facility in Mendota with a rail loop initially constructed by Fasco Mills before ADM bought the local company in 2007.

However, ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area and the company needed a new location to better serve

its customers, while Mendota’s strong workforce would provide the company with the employees needed to be able to

make the highest quality flour.

ADM is a proud Mendota business and supporter of the Mendota area as its actively

involved in community events like the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival and ag-related projects across the region.
