DeKalb Farmers Market will operate every Thursday until Sept. 21

DeKALB – Dana Walker of DeKalb browsed the downtown DeKalb Farmers Market on June 1 with her dog, Sophie and said she and her daughter frequent the market regularly.

The DeKalb Farmers Market returned to Van Buer Plaza in downtown DeKalb and will continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday through Sept. 21. The market is hosted by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and presented by Northwestern Medicine.

“We never miss it,” Walker said. “We come every Thursday. It’s on the calendar.”

Walker said she wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but she felt the market had a nice turnout for opening day.

“I have a couple booths that I always hit every time that I come,” Walker said. “I always love getting the fresh veggies. I love that the AM and PM Hemp Farm is here and that they have water bowls for the dogs.”

The market, located between Second and Locust streets, featured vendors selling everything from fresh, locally grown produce and extra virgin olive oil to handmade and homemade products.

New this season, the market will feature a craft demonstration by DeKalb craft store Michaels.

The demo will take place from 11 to 11:30 a.m. June 22. Participants, while supplies last, will have the chance to decorate a sign that they can take home and place in their yard.

Also new this season, the market is introducing some different musicians to the lineup for Egyptian Theatre’s free Live Lunch Music Series, which runs every

week from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Virginia Filicetti, DeKalb Chamber market manager, said the series will offer a wide variety of music to appeal to anyone’s taste.

“It ranges, so there’s going to be jazz music, guitar artists,” Filicetti said. “Usually, Stage Coach Players does a few songs from musicals that they have coming up.”

Among the vendors on hand for opening day was Bill Hristakos. He said he was selling extra virgin olive oil from his olive farms in Greece, which he described as very pure.

“It takes about a month to harvest it and then we leave it about a month and a half to

settle down because we don’t filter it,” Hristakos said. “We just leave it to be all everything natural. Because when you filter it, you lose a lot of flavors. So, we leave it in the vent for a month and a half, it settles down by itself and then we put in the bottles. [It’s] never been mixed. Whatever I produce, I put them in the bottle. Like I said, from my farm to your table.”

On average, the market features about 20 vendors each week.

Hristakos said he enjoyed the turnout for the market’s opening day.

“For a hot day like we have today, it’s

Tyler teacher receives LifeChanger of the Year Award

DeKALB – One Tyler Elementary School teacher is being lauded as a life changer.

Cherish Jackson was one of 10 educators from more than 550 nominations nationwide recognized with the LifeChanger of the Year Award, an annual awards program sponsored and run by National Life Group.

According to its website, the program is dedicated to celebrating K-12 educators and school employees across the nation who exemplify excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Jackson said that receiving the LifeChanger of the Year Award means a lot to her.

“It means sowing back into a community that sowed into me in times when I didn’t even know that I needed

it,” Jackson said. “I went to NIU [Northern Illinois University] and I learned how to be an adult, how to grocery shop, how to attend classes. I learned so much about myself that I didn’t know or even have the opportunity to explore back in Chicago. It means so much to me to say that, ‘Hey, I grew up in a sense into adulthood here and now I get to sow back into the very places that I used to volunteer at.’”

Jackson was recently surprised with the honor during an assembly organized by the school district. The recognition includes a $3,000 cash prize to be split 50/50 between the award’s recipient and a donation to Tyler Elementary School.

Jackson said she plans to use the award money to start an after-school journaling club next school year.

Jackson is completing her first year of teaching in DeKalb School District 428 at Tyler Elementary. This year marks her fourth year overall as an educator.

Jackson said her teaching style is best described as “non-traditional.”

“I have the students take full con -

trol over their [Individualized Education Plans],” she said. “Again, I start off by showing them what their goals are and then have them write it in their own words. From there, we track it once a month. We use a grid system [for self-rating]. … Like I said, that’s very non-traditional.”

Typically, special education teachers will rely on rating scales or teacher interviews.

Jackson said she prefers that her IEP process is student-led.

“It’s usually adults making decisions for the kids,” she said. “What I’ve learned is … it doesn’t really hold onto the student all too well.”

Jackson credits the experience she gained from participating in NIU’s African American Mentor Program for helping to inform and shape how she approaches her job.

“I was part of an organization through Mr. [Derrick] Smith, through the Center for Black Studies and they used to come into the elementary schools and into the middle schools,” Jackson said. “They use to go and they use to mentor after school some of the students. I was part of that. Now, I’m a

teacher here and I get to make the same impact.”

Jackson described Smith not only as a mentor to her but a godfather.

“He taught me that if I really want to go into education that it starts with me, not just more so my academics and what I was learning,” she said. “He really shaped the holistic way of education for me because he’s a counselor through the university but he really helped me see beyond just attending classes, I’m getting A’s in my classes but what does it mean to be a community member and what does it mean to actually reach the students pre-high school, at the high school level and as they’re entering college.”

Jackson said she’s always been in awe of Smith and his community involvement. She said she intends to follow in Smith’s footsteps by giving back to the community and working as a camp counselor through the DeKalb Park District this summer.

“A lot of the kids who go to Lincoln, Founders [elementary schools], they’ll be there, too,” Jackson said. “I’m excited to see them again.”

Kirkland residents dream of tree city

Tree removal frustration grows into shared group with hopes for a greener community

KIRKLAND – About 10 months after some Kirkland residents expressed dismay at a village project which required trees to be cut down, the group has turned that frustration into a goal: to make Kirkland a green city.

Residents recently reformed the village’s Kirkland Tree Commission, a cooperative effort meant to enhance the community’s canopy in collaboration with the village.

Dozens of trees were removed by the village of Kirkland from the strip of grass between Kirkland neighborhood roads and the adjacent sidewalks in August 2022 to make way for a new curb

and sewer system. Village officials said they’d tried to find a way to install the new sewer system without needing to remove trees but they determined removal was the “safest, most viable solution,” Village President Ryan Block said at the time.

The felling of those trees didn’t sit right with Kirkland resident Dawn Darling, 56, one of the founding members of the village of Kirkland Tree Commission.

Darling said Kirkland’s Village Board approved the creation of a tree commission four or five years ago, but it fell by the wayside in 2020.

“So when we went back to the board meeting to discuss all of these trees being taken down it was discovered they

were favorable to us forming a board to be able to handle if something like this comes up again – the right way to handle it,” Darling said.

Formed in the fall of 2022, Darling said she and the six other members of the village of Kirkland Tree Commission “are still trying to work the kinks out,” but have ambitions to use the new commission to turn the village of Kirkland into a tree city.

Tree City USA is a 47-year-old Arbor Day Foundation program that encourages urban forests. In 2022, 3,559 municipalities were designated tree cities by the Arbor Day Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, trees and urban forests create cooler temperatures, cleaner air, higher property val-

ues and healthier residents.

Trees can help to keep pollutants out of water ways, and can reduce urban flooding by managing stormwater runoff, according to village of Kirkland Tree Commission documents.

The tree commission also planted a swamp white oak tree in Behnke Park on April 28 as a way to celebrate Arbor Day.

Founding tree commission member Jeff Miller, 68, of Kirkland, said trees in his neighborhood were decimated by an Emerald Ash Borer beetle infestation.

According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Emerald Ash Borer beetle is responsible for the destruction of tens of

millions of ash trees in 30 states.

“If you go up there now it looks like a wasteland,” Miller said.

The Emerald Ash Borer beetle had devastating effects on the tree canopy in Miller’s neighborhood because the majority of trees planted there were Ash trees. Had more diverse trees been planted, the impact of the bug could have been less severe.

Removing dying or dead trees isn’t the problem, but getting replacement trees planted in their place has been, Miller said.

A recommended tree list has been developed by the tree commission to help Kirkland residents identify trees that can be resilient to known infestations. The list also includes tree species that are safe to grow inside a parkway – the strip of land between the the street and sidewalk – without causing damage to the sidewalk or curb.

“We just are trying to support homeowners who are trying to put trees in front of their houses. Obviously our committee isn’t about controlling what

DeKalb library to host screening of ‘Creed’

DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library will host a screening of the 2015 movie “Creed” as part of a monthly program celebrating Black cinema.

The movie will be shown at 1 p.m. June 10 in the library’s lower-level Yusunas Meeting Room, 309 Oak St., according to a news release.

The screening is free and intended for teens and adults.

“Creed” tells the story of Adonis Johnson who never knew his father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Johnson heads to Philadelphia to be trained by his father’s rival turned friend, Rocky Balboa. Despite insisting he is retired, Balboa agrees to train Johnson.

The movie is rated PG-13.

they’re putting in their own yards,” Darling said.

Kirkland Public Works Superintendent Jim Stark said he’s learned a lot since he was asked to join the tree commission when it formed.

“I appreciate it myself, I like trees ... I really don’t cut down trees unless they really have to come down. You know, there’s all kinds of stuff you can do to trim them to try and save them before you take them down,” Stark said.

The Tree Commission hopes that Kirkland’s Village Board will approve a new permitting process for the planting of trees in homeowners’ parkways. If approved, that process would create a path forward for new tree cover in areas of Kirkland that recently lost their shade.

Not all parkways will be deemed fit for the new trees, Stark said.

When a permit application is placed, Stark assesses the location to determine if a tree is permissible.

“My parkway on Main Street – I’m right by downtown, Main Street Kirkland – and I’ve only got a 2-foot parkway so there’s no trees going in that area,” Stark said.

LOOKING BACK

1923 – 100 YEARS AGO

Considerable fun was experienced in DeKalb yesterday afternoon and evening when two autos came to this city at a lively clip from Batavia, where the occupants of the first car had just a short time before been united in the bonds of matrimony. Arriving here the first machine was able to lose the pursuers, who nevertheless kept a vigilant watch. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in trying to locate them but to no avail. However, just as the 7:42 arrived, the searching party discovered the newlyweds waiting at the station for the train west. Here a joyful little party was held by the searching party and the married couple before the train finally arrived.

Mrs. Pobstman of Chase was in DeKalb on Monday and helped the ladies of the American Legion make wreaths for the soldiers’ graves.

Unger’s Buster Brown Shoe Store has 55 pairs of girls’ pumps and oxfords in patent and kids, black and brown. There are all the famous Buster Brown grades, the best shoes of today, 100% leather and wear like iron. The kids always need new shoes. Buy these new while they last, values to $6.00, at $3.85.

DeKalb businessmen wishing rapid service from Chicago to this city will be glad to hear the Chicago & Northwestern railroad has now in operation an express train from Chicago to DeKalb making the trip every morning in an hour and a half. This is the fastest service yet obtained between the two cities. The train, making its first stop after leaving Chicago at DeKalb, will leave the city at 10:20 a.m. and arrive in DeKalb at 11:59. Stops will be made in Rochelle, Dixon, Sterling, and points west.

Sycamore street corners are now being adorned with new street signs, arranged so that each sign faces the respective street which it represents. City Superintendent Homer Sargent has had a force of men working the last few days and so far have succeeded in getting a good share of the streets taken care of. The signs are on a black background with silver letters, which show distinctly from a good distance. The city has long felt the need of new signs, so that this move is one that will be greatly appreciated by the citizens.

1948 – 75 YEARS AGO

DeKalb police were today trying to find some trace of a bank which was taken from the Skaar home early this morning. Police were informed that the bank, which contained about $15 had been taken from the home and was discovered missing about 12:40 o’clock this morning. Entrance to the house was gained through an unlocked door. The bank, of glass, contained silver, pennies, dimes, quarters and fifty-cent pieces.

Poppy Day was a great success for the Waterman unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. Workers disposed of 700 poppies bringing in $93.63 with a net profit of $58.63 to be used for rehabilitation and child welfare work among veterans and their families.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Shrader and son, Barry, have gone to Redwood Falls, Minn., for the summer. Mr. Shrader will be employed there for the DeKalb Agricultural Association.

Beverly Hills, Cal., – Messages of sympathy came from across the nation today to the family of Charles W. Nash, 84, who rose in the American tradition from farm boy to a leader of industry. Nash was one of the pioneers in the automotive industry. He was born in DeKalb County, Ill, Jan. 28, 1864, where he was a farmer until 1891. Then he went to work in Flint, Mich., as a trimmer in the Flint Road Cart Co.

Brownies of DeKalb County, about 160 of them, enjoyed a day of fun and activities at Camp Rotary MacQueen on Saturday. Although the final hour was dampened by a heavy shower that started about 2 o’clock, the youngsters and leaders crowded into one of the larger buildings and finished out the planned activities without too much trouble. There were about 200 present at the camp, 35 of the group being adult and the remainder were youngsters who were there for the events of the day.

DeKalb County Chapter of the Flying Farmers met for breakfast at the Elmer Plapp farm, southwest of Maple Park last week. There were nearly a hundred present with 34 planes landing there during the morning. There are 45 farmers in this vicinity who are regular flyers.

The DeKalb County Council for Older Adults is seeking to expand its Meals on Wheels program by offering the service

in other town in addition to DeKalb and Sycamore, and by reaching all those persons who would benefit from it. The program offers hot noon meals on Monday through Friday for persons whose health is endangered by exertion or by sub-standard diets resulting from physical or financial limitations.

The DeKalb Planning Commission was told Tuesday night the land on DeKalb’s south side sought by the A. O. Smith Company of Milwaukee, Wis., is “satisfactory” for heavy industry.

A decision on the result of the public hearing held yesterday on the proposed aircraft landing strip near Genoa will probably be made in late July. Gary Pettee, Roselle, a landscaper and licenses pilot, wants to construct the landing strip and a 27-lot residential housing complex on 80 acres southeast of the northern DeKalb County town. The lots would be offered for sale to aircraft owners. The department of aeronautics had originally given Pettee permission to build the project, but strong objections from neighboring property owners necessitated a public hearing.

1998 – 25 YEARS AGO

The City of DeKalb Engineering Department announces that the Route 23/Fairview Drive traffic signal will be turned on Tuesday, June 9. It will flash red in all directions for 24 hours, followed by actual activation of the signal June 10.

With ribbon-cutting ceremonies attended by local officials, the National Bank & Trust Company of Sycamore officially opened its doors for business at 2290 Sycamore Road in DeKalb on June 4. The new facility was dedicated to the individuals and businesses of the DeKalb area.

There are many awards for business owners and managers. Now there is a special award for the hourly employees. The Innovator’s Award is designed to recognize and encourage individuals employed in the DeKalb County area who possess a talent for solving problems, improving processes or arriving at the unusual, non-traditional solution in their job. The program is intended for those employees who have limited academic experience at the collegiate level.

not bad,” Hristakos said. “It’s good crowd. It’s very good.”

Filicetti said she feels some people have become increasingly concerned about where their food is coming from.

“I think definitely since [COVID-19] it’s been more of a concern from customers,” Filicetti said. “It’s great because you get to talk to the farmer or the vendor that works at the farm or property and grows, so they can ask more questions about it versus going to a grocery store, you pick it off the shelf and you go check out. You get that oneon-one interaction. You get to know where your food is coming from, who’s growing it.”

One such program, Filicetti said, that’s helped people to afford the locally grown fresh produce they desire is the market’s Link Match program. Link cards are provided to those in Illinois who quality to receive SNAP food assistance benefits.

Filicetti said the DeKalb Farmers’

Market is the only market in DeKalb County with a Link Match program that allows those with a Link card to double their benefits to purchase fresh produce.

“It’s still a fairly new program and we’re definitely trying to spread the word about how you can get so much fresh fruits and vegetables, produce all at the same time at the market,” Filicetti said. “It’s a great opportunity. We’re the only market in the county that offers that. There are others throughout the state, but we’re the only ones in the county that do that.”
