Carl Reina out as Sycamore fire chief

SYCAMORE – After two months on the job, Carl Reina is out as Sycamore fire chief, Sycamore Fire Department employees said, although details on his departure aren’t readily available.

Deputy Chief Bart Gilmore, who joined the department last fall, has been named acting fire chief in the interim.

It’s not immediately clear when Reina’s employment with the city of Sycamore ended, and city officials remain tightlipped about the departure.

“The City’s policy is not to comment on personnel matters,” City Manager Michael Hall said in an email March 28.

Reina was in attendance at the March 20 Sycamore City Council meeting. Changes to his employment, however, were not mentioned publicly nor listed as part of any agenda item or vote. The council did not convene any executive session – portions of the meeting are not open to the public – to discuss city personnel, according to city documents released ahead of the meeting.

On Jan. 17, Reina was sworn in as Sycamore Fire Chief, replacing Peter Polarek, who retired last year effective Dec. 31. The

Reina said during his January appointment.

When reached, Gilmore confirmed his role as successor to Reina, but deferred additional comment to City Hall.

Reina did not respond to requests for comment.

On Sept. 19, 2022, after he was sworn in as Deputy Fire chief, Gilmore said he viewed his career pivot – he joined Sycamore Fire Department after spending 26 years with DeKalb Fire Department – as an opportunity to try something new.

According to city documents provided through a Freedom of Information Act request, on Sept. 20, 2022, Polarek signed an addendum to his April 1, 2019, employment agreement with Sycamore. According to the addendum, Polarek was paid a base bi-weekly salary of $5,091 – not including education and longevity stipends – and remains on the city’s payroll until May 2 using accrued benefit time, records show.

After May 2, Polarek is expected to receive a lump sum of $48,234 for almost 758 hours of accrued benefit sick time, records show.

Reina came to Sycamore with 26 years of experience in municipal fire service, including as deputy fire chief for the Berwyn Fire Department in Cook County.

Vocational farm nonprofit offers animal therapy across northern Illinois GOAT GRAMS FOR EASTER

HAMPSHIRE – Live Learn and Lead – a vocational farm in Hampshire – is doing well after more than three years of serving the public through programing it says transforms the mind, body and spirit.

Didi Dowling, owner and executive director of Live Learn and Lead, said individuals who are helped by her 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization are taught life skills, such as work ethic, cooking, home and animal care as well as basic mechanics. The organization is based in Hampshire but operates throughout the region, including DeKalb, Boone, Kane, McHenry and Lake counties.

The charitable organization exists today because Dowling decided she wanted to find a way to work out of her barn after getting a master’s degree in social work from George Williams College of Aurora University in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

“I basically wanted to have my barn

be my office so I created Live Learn and Lead,” Dowling said.

She also wanted to share her farm with people who need a therapeutic and comfortable space.

According to Live Learn and Lead’s website, “the farm offers a life sharing work environment in an atmosphere of beauty, warmth and respectfulness.”

The nonprofit farm hosts traveling sessions to area schools, bringing goats with them for schoolchildren across the region. Other events offer chances to learn how to make goat’s milk soap and candles, and partner with 4-H groups across northern Illinois for educational opportunities.

Dowling said the farm is doing well, though it’s start wasn’t easy. She began the endeavor in December 2019, three months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, which came with its own set of challenges, she said.

“We started by doing the traveling with the goat yoga to get the name out

and then unfortunately the pandemic hit. I got COVID really bad, I had to shut down for a while,” Dowling said.

On April 7-9, Live Learn and Lead will offer an Easter-themed fundraiser it’s calling Goat Grams, where the farm brings a goat to a donor for a 15-minute visit complete with a goodie bag with goat milk soap and lotions.

“During the pandemic we couldn’t do the goat yoga so we got really creative and I came up with doing ‘goat grams,’ where we go to people’s houses with two of our baby goats,” Dowling said.

The Goat Grams were especially popular during the pandemic, Dowling said, prompting the nonprofit to explore the offering further.

“So we kept it going and this Easter it filled up so fast that I still had people asking me for it but we’ve got so many to do already we had to shut [goat gram requests] down,” Dowling said. “So we’ll do more Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and we’ve done some for private birthdays ... I just felt like it was another therapeutic aspect for people during the pandemic.”

In 2021, the vocational farm expanded it’s operation through a partnership with Kane County 4-H and began hosting agriculture educa-

tion classes for children and adults during the week.

Andrea Farrier, the Kane County 4-H program coordinator said the connection between 4-H and Live Learn and Lead has been a natural partnership, in part, because Dowling is a Kane County 4-H alumna.

Farrier also said the suburban nature of Kane County means participating children and adults are able to immerse themselves in a different type of environment than they’re likely used to. She said that’s expected to have mental health benefits.

“When mental health is an issue this is a way for them to escape that, really channel their skills, gain skills. It really allows them to connect oneon-one with a mentoring adult,” Farrier said. “It helps them learn skills for entry-level positions at stables or other situations like that.”

Dowling said every day she thinks about how lucky she is to have Live Learn and Lead operating successfully.

“It’s something that I’ve thought about for a long time and to know that it’s actually working and it’s helping people, and I’m able to do – I just think it’s super cool,” Dowling said.

HomeGoods retail store headed to DeKalb

firmed plans to move its location from Oakland Plaza Shopping Center to Northland Plaza, across Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

DeKALB – A popular Massachusetts-based home furnishing store, HomeGoods, is headed to DeKalb and expected to open a store in Northland Plaza along Sycamore Road.

DeKalb City Planner Dan Olson confirmed the business’ arrival to the city Thursday, March 30, and said HomeGoods will go between grocer Aldi and discount clothing store Ross Dress for Less.

According to Northland Plaza’s owner, Bridge 33 Capital, HomeGoods will take up 18,269 square feet at 2530 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, according to the commercial real estate investment firm’s website.

No details have yet been announced as to when HomeGoods is expected to open, although work is being done on the outside and interior of the building as of Thursday.

HomeGoods is owned by TJX Companies, based in Framingham, Massachusetts. The retail parent company also

The move came with approval from the DeKalb City Council to allow the retailer to have a bigger sign to match its neighboring stores in the shopping center.

It wasn’t the first time a retailer had moved to Northland Plaza from across the street. Aldi moved from its previous location in 2019, reopening in a larger location in Northland Plaza in July 2019.

The old Aldi location now houses Harbor Freight Tools.

The Northland Plaza Shopping Center also includes PetSmart, Hobby Lobby, Planet Fitness, Shoe Sensation, America’s Best Contacts and Eyeglasses and a number of food establishments including Panda Express, Buffalo Wild Wings and Panera Bread.

The plaza’s development plans show a FiveGuys burger joint planned for the 2,524-square-foot space at 2446 Sycamore Road across from Buffalo Wild Wings, although city officials have not confirmed that move.

LOOKING BACK

1923 – 100 YEARS AGO

While riding a bicycle last night about five o’clock, Perry Bjelk of The Chronicle, was struck by an unknown autoist and thrown to the curbing, inflicting wounds about the head. The boy was in the act of delivering the Sycamore Chronicle to the interurban line when struck. Oscar Larsen, uncle of the boy, and state police patrolman, happened to be near the scene, rushed to his assistance and took him to a doctor’s office where the wound was given attention. Perry was not injured much and considers himself very fortunate. He was back on the job today apparently none the worse for his injuries.

Ten sleepers were given shelter at the city bastille Tuesday night, and Desk Sergeant J. W. Concidine was kept busy registering the guests. It looks like the coming of warm weather brought all the men out of their nests and ended the hibernation periods until next winter again.

Workmen are busy on the rooms formerly occupied by Charles Redisch, cigar manufacturer, who recently sold out to E. H. Maeser. It is understood that the place is being repaired and remodeled to suit the conveniences of a shoe maker who will soon occupy the rooms.

Imbibing too freely of moonshine while en route from Chicago to DeKalb got a Chicago man into trouble with the police here last Monday. Officers believed he was too drunk to be allowed to roam the streets and was arrested. When he was arraigned before Judge V. A. Glidden, he pleaded guilty to the charge of being drunk and disorderly, but objected to the fine and costs, which he considered too high. However, there was little argument and within a few moments the man had written his check for $28.10 to cover costs and fine and was released.

1948 – 75 YEARS AGO

Tomorrow, April 6, is Army Day. As a token of respect for the United States Army, which has proven again and again to be the finest body of fighting men in the world, all citizens of DeKalb are urged to display the flag tomorrow. No ceremonies are planned in DeKalb, nor in other parts of the county, although in some places it is featured by patriotic talks and by wearing of the uniform by members of the organized reserves and by National Guardsmen. Businessmen, in particular, are urged to display the flag in front of their places of business on Army Day.

Vandals who have been destroying and damaging property in the Kingston Forest Preserve for more than a year now have worn the patience of the DeKalb County Forest Preserve district commissioners pretty thin. Today, the commissioners announced that a $50 reward had been posted for the arrest and conviction of the vandals, believed to be youths. Swings have been torn down, and other playground materials wrecked or thrown into the road at various times and the commissioners have decided that enough is enough.

At 2 o’clock on the morning of Sunday, April 25, residents of DeKalb will advance their clocks one hour, Central Daylight Time become the official time for the city. Most of the surrounding cities have also adopted daylight time during the summer months. A city ordinance was adopted by the DeKalb City Council in April, 1946, establishing the official time of the city and accomplishing daylight savings time.

A quarter century ago the name California Packing Corporation didn’t mean much to DeKalb. Today, it has tremendous significance. For “Cal-Pak” operations in this county are on a giant scale. The corporation farms and operates under contract 10,000 acres of the county’s finest farm land each year. It offers permanent employment to 110 residents of the community and temporary work during the summer to at least 700 more. And it provides a healthy chunk of the food needed by the entire nation in a year.

John Oster Manufacturing Company of Genoa, announced that it had signed a contract to sell its plant to the Greenlee Bros. and Company of Rockford. The announcement, made late yesterday, came as no surprise, as the important industry of Genoa had been moving machinery out of its plant for the past month. The Oster firm manufactures barbers’ cutting equipment and kindred articles for other fields.

1973 – 50 YEARS AGO

Kishwaukee Hospital has been granted a tax-exempt status by the IRS, a decision which will save about $3.5 million in interest costs over 30 years. In order to qualify, Kishwaukee had to be classified as a charitable organization, provide that none of its income or earnings would go for the private benefit of any of its officers, directors or members, show that use of the bond funds satisfies a public purpose and indicate that the directors were willing to offer the

facility to a governmental agency when all the bonds are paid off.

Some members of the housing and art classes in Hinckley visited the Art Institute last Wednesday. The housing class enjoyed seeing the rooms in miniature at the institute, and the art classes also saw many interesting things. A big thanks to Mrs. Lou Gorley, Carol Rupp, and Mrs. Ralph Wurster for a good time.

Twelve exhibitors from Huntley Middle School will enter district competition Saturday at the Illinois Academy of Science Fair at the NIU Fieldhouse. The seventh and eighth grade entrants won first place awards at the Huntley Middle School Science Fair held last week. Almost 200 students entered the show, with projects developed during science classes.

1998 – 25 YEARS AGO

More car accidents happened at Fourth Street and Lincoln Highway in DeKalb than almost any other intersection in the county last year. The information comes on the heels of recently released driving pattern statistics from local law enforcement agencies. While accidents and accident-related fatalities were down around the county last year, a few intersections managed to cause a number of problems.

The Girl Scouts in the Sybaquay Girl Scout Council Wynonwy Service Unit would like to do some good for the community. They would like to “adopt” downtown DeKalb. The girls are looking for businesses that would like help in promoting the downtown area through either window displays, fliers, store decorations or planting flowers around the downtown area. Some of the activities that the scouts have taken part in downtown have been the Farmers’ Market, Christmas caroling and decorating at Christmas time.

DeKalb city leaders impose restrictions on video gambling

City Council prohibits video gambling at restaurants without bar liquor licenses, gas stations, liquor stores

number of video gaming establishments in the city,” Brown said. “This is already a highly regulated industry by the state. Don’t put a cap on the number of establishments. This has cost and will cost prospective businesses to seek permits in other cities. Quite frankly, the free market does a much better job of determining a proper number than the City Council does.”

Under an ordinance amended by the DeKalb City Council in a pair of 5-0 votes, restrictions will prohibit video gambling establishments in current and future restaurants, gas stations, food and fuel establishments, and liquor stores, but not video gambling terminals in businesses holding a bar liquor license in town.

DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes said he believes the amended video gambling ordinance is a win-win for the city and the restriction deliberations weren’t rushed.

“This is a great compromise for, I think, everyone concerned that we are still allowing this to move forward,” Barnes said. “We’re just restricting a certain number of it. Future councils can always change it, absolutely. This is just what we’re deciding right now is what we believe is best for the city of DeKalb.”

Also under the amended ordinance, there are five businesses – Keg and Kernel by Tangled Roots Brewing Company, La Calle Bar and Music Venue, Lord Stanley’s and the Annex, Tapa La Luna and The Grove Tavern – that would become eligible for a video gambling license.

DeKalb resident Duane Brown urged the council to make the city more business friendly.

“We don’t need unnecessary and restrictive regulations regarding the

Discussion on this topic previously arose at the council’s meeting earlier this month. During that meeting, the City Council extended a request made by Jeff Dobie of Blue Ridge LLC for a liquor and video gambling license in order to operate a proposed 6,090-squarefoot building, across from Fatty’s Pub and Grille. Action taken by city leaders at the time provides that there will be 11 video gambling establishments allowed in town.

At a maximum, a licensed establishment is allowed to have up to six video gambling terminals for patrons to use, according to city documents.

In 2022, the city took in $391,000 in tax revenue from the terminals, the highest annual revenue to date, according to city records. License fees brought in $96,000 for the terminals in 2022.

Sixth Ward Alderman Mike Verbic questioned where all the money generated from the city’s video gambling would go. “Will this be a part of a budget discussion then, or we will direct you to carve out a specific amount of future proceeds from gaming?”

City Manager Bill Nicklas replied, saying revenue generated from area video gambling goes to city’s general fund. He expressed some hesitancy about setting aside funding to area social service agencies to address the issues with gambling.

“We don’t know yet about quality, what they’re bringing and if they’re successful and all that,” Nicklas said.

Verbic, who said he’s opposed to video gambling, said he supports the council’s decision but believes more action is needed for people susceptible to gambling addictions.

“I feel like we should be dedicating a portion of – whether it’s monies we’ve already collected or future monies – to address that issue specifically,” Verbic said. “We don’t provide counseling from the city of DeKalb but how can we be a better partner to help people that are taken by this gambling.”

Glidden Homestead holds ‘Paint the Porch’ fundraiser

Shaw Local News Network

DeKALB – The J.F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center is holding a “Paint the Porch” fundraiser to help restore the homestead’s front porch.

The fundraiser’s donors will be invited to a reception April 16 at the homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, according to news release.

The farmhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and shares the story of inventor Joseph Glidden, his family’s entrepreneurial spirit, and the role barbed wire played in building the city of DeKalb.

Glidden and his wife, Lucinda Warne, built the homestead in 1861. After Glidden moved off the farm and into town in 1877, family members and farm managers lived in the home and managed the farm. Glidden’s nephew John modernized the home with electrical, plumbing, heating and architectural updates after Joseph’s death in 1906. The last of the Glidden family moved out of the homestead in 1998 after being assured that Glidden’s legacy in the development of DeKalb and the nation would be perpetuated.

To donate to the the porch painting project, visit the homestead’s Facebook page or gliddenhomestead.org/

donate, or send a check in the mail to the Glidden Homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

DeKalb Chamber welcomes Aurora Music Co. with ribbon-cutting

If

Dear Neighbor:

I have great news for your wallet if your furnace is over 12 years old. Allow me to explain...Every year, the months of January, February & March can be slow for my business. I employ great people and want to keep them working during these long, slow months. That is why I’ve come up with a Win Win Situation for both of us.

Every year, the big manufacturers of furnaces & air conditioners guess how many to build to meet the demand. Of course, they’re never exactly right. So, they always have some inventory that they must hold over until the next summer season. I went to one of these companies and contracted for the purchase of sixteen Deluxe furnaces and air conditioners in the four most

popular sizes used in Kane County. And, because of the quantity and time of year, I was able to buy them at drastically reduced prices.

They are brand-new Deluxe Models. They are NOT the seconds or “blems” or standard “builder” models. They are factory-fresh furnaces and air conditioners and have a full 10-year factory warranty.

How To Get A Furnace For Peanuts

If you are interested in a new heating/cooling system (but only if one of the four sizes I have will fit your house, of course), I am “giving” you the furnace and all I ask for is the $941 in labor & material costs for installation along with the purchase of your air conditioner.

Perfect

Fit For Your Home

I will come out and measure your home (and determine the availability of the proper size). Don’t forget, I only have 16 matched Deluxe Systems in four sizes. When they are gone, this remarkable offer ends also. Just call 815-758-8484.

Absolutely No Obligation

After I completely explain the installation, there is absolutely no obligation. If you decide you don’t want to take advantage of the spectacular savings... That’s OK.

You Can Buy With NO Cash*

You don’t even have to pay me right way. I have set up a terrific 0%* payment plan.

Fuel Efficiency Guarantee**

I’m so confident that you will save at least 25% on your heating and cooling bills (I’m projecting more like 30%), that I will pay you the difference for a year if you don’t! I’ll show you exactly how this works. If these heating and air conditioning systems were not among the best on the market, I couldn’t afford to make such a promise.

Why This Offer Can’t Last

I only have a few of each of the four sizes. When all of the air conditioners are sold and all the furnaces are “given” away, that’s it. There are no more at this price. Call Bre now at 815-758-8484 to set up an appointment for your no-obligation survey.

Warmly,

Connie McCleary, 82, died on the morning of February 20, 2023, with her brother at her side. Connie was preceded in death by her husband Perry Wayne Caudill, her parents, James and Helen McCleary, her stepmother Bea Hackamack-McCleary, brothers Douglas and Dennis McCleary and sister Bethann McCleary. Connie is survived by her brother David McCleary, loving sister-in-law Gretchen Lohr-McCleary and exceptional nephew Scot Lohr.

Connie was blessed to feel that the entire staff and those who make the Grand Victorian of Sycamore their home were her beloved friends, always there with a hug and more

member at Sycamore United Methodist Church, and served as secretary and board member in the DeKalb Area Arts Council.

Steven Griglione: Anyone who visited downtown Sycamore from the late 1970s until well into the 21st century passed near a much beloved business where young musicians found or improved upon their musical talents. That business was Mr. G’s Music Studio, owned and operated by 2022 inductee Steven “Mr. G.” Griglione.

Mr. G’s opened in 1977 and operated for more than 40 years. Griglione was a 1968 graduate of Sycamore High School. He later earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Illinois University. As both a business owner and mentor, he served the community for 43 years of outstanding music mentoring and education, according to the release. He played the organ for various Sycamore High School sporting events, and participated in countless community musical activities, groups and events. Griglione, a posthumous inductee, died in late 2020. Griglione’s estate donated money to the Sycamore Music Boosters

than willing to help when needed. In her final weeks, the Grand Victorian’s excellent staff and Connie’s special hospice team were there to ensure that Connie was comfortable and felt surrounded by love. We are particularly grateful to Connie’s special friend Lizzy, and to Fran Clucas and her good friend Miles for their friendship and frequent visits. Connie carries with her Fran and Miles laughter, chocolate chip cookies and numerous gifts of love.

Although Connie founded or managed five significant non-profit organizations, she is perhaps best known for her time spent as the Director of Mental Health at the All Saints AIDS Service Center in Pasadena, Ca. As one of the largest and most responsive AIDS associated agencies on the west coast, Connie dealt with thousands of individuals during a time when contracting HIV was both a death sentence and a stigmatizing event that led to intense isolation. During that period, David Lyman, one of Connie’s good friends, chose

and music equipment from his former store to the Sycamore music department after his death.

Arthur D. Montzka: Montzka held degrees from George Washington University, Oberlin Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music. He also served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra, according to the release. He was a member of the Illinois Arts Council Advisory panel, board member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and a lifetime member of the American String Teachers Association. He served as the first official conductor for the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He was honored as the Suzuki Chairholder and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1994. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He was official photographer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and taught orchestra in DeKalb. He was a major supporter of the Sycamore/NIU Suzuki Program, helped re-establish the Sycamore orchestra program, was an organist for the Sycamore Federated Church,

to describe Connie in terms of her extra-ordinary qualities of Mindfulness, Steadiness, and Neighborliness. Here is what David said:

“Mindfulness suggests not only the exceptional skills and experience which Connie has, but also that she remembers people – both living and dead. And she shares them with others to remember. Particular people are thought of, particular events shared, and particular needs are responded to. She’s so thoroughly responsive and she shows us a way to value ourselves and each other. There’s a steadiness to Connie’s pace and a constancy to her purpose. Again, another paradigm for us. I’m simply amazed that for her it’s one foot in front of the other – often under very difficult circumstances – and this, all tending in a constant direction: toward providing a truly human response to others. It’s Connie’s neighborliness that means the most to me. With her, there’s a sense of easy and calm companionship, of everyday good-heartedness, and a disposition toward

and established the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. He also taught private violin and viola lessons for many years. Montzka, a posthumous inductee, died in late 2002.

There are four categories of Hall of Fame inductees which recognizes ways in which Sycamore High School alumni and community members have contributed to the music programs. The individual must have a record of distinguished and exceptional performance, service and achievement in their vocation or avocation outside of music.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame may be submitted any time, but generally, the nomination deadline for any year is late February. The nomination deadline for the 2023 induction year is late February 2024. To submit a nomination, email cynthiahagemeyer410@ gmail.com.

bringing people together – bringing us together to do things almost forgotten in our culture: to remember, to tell stories, to share meals, and to simply be together in a way that reminds one that the purpose of life is much more than to solve problems and cope: it’s to enjoy the present moment with each other.”

Connie lived life to serve others. While she might have opted for walls filled with degrees and professional accolades, instead, she will be remembered for getting down into the trenches and fighting for those who are marginalized, homeless, sick, hungry and most of all, the neglected children of this world. Connie loved to sing, to rejoice in God’s love and in the midst of the world’s darkest moments, to rise up and do whatever needed to be done. One foot in front of the other. Memorials can be sent to First United Methodist Church, c/o Dr. Eric Johnson, Director of Music Ministries, 317 N. 4th St., DeKalb, IL 60115
