Executive Chef John Fleming’s menu reflects the American melting pot of different cultures and tastes. Perhaps that’s why their catering is found at corporate, holiday and special occasion gatherings throughout the area. Appetizers include crab cakes dressed with celery root slaw and a red pepper remoulade, and coconut shrimp with a Napa cabbage slaw and plum chili sauce. The baked French onion soup is always fulfilling. Caramelized onions combined with hearty beef stock, form the perfect base for the rich mantel of cheese and the crisp garlic crostini. Salads are a varied mix with garden and Caesar, along with several entrée size options and specials. The Harvest Salad rotates ingredients featuring seasonally fresh options.
lingonberry glaze and served with spätzle, pan browned with fresh herbs and nutmeg. A savory roasted garlic and shallot confit rounds out this dish. Grilled Squash Roulade features grilled zucchini and yellow squash slices topped with ricotta, asiago, parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, pine nuts and fresh basil, rolled, then baked and served with sautéed spinach, grilled portabellas, and fresh marinara sauce. Desserts include a cherry tart with sweet, dark cherries wrapped in piecrust, baked to a flakey golden brown and plated with ice cream. Bread pudding is always available and several versions of tiramisu work their way onto the specials list. Watch for the summer-only berry tiramisu.
The extensive brunch menu offers skillets, pancakes, omelets, waffles, French toast, blintzes and more. Specialty dishes include a Chesapeake Bay Crab Strata, Huevos Chilliqueles and homemade Corned Beef Hash. With fresh squeezed juice, or a cup of coffee, it’s a wonderful start to your day. Open for lunch and dinner, and weekend brunch. Enjoy live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.
Sandwiches, available for lunch and dinner, include the selection that put them on the map – the Cuban. Thin-sliced roast pork pairs with spicy capicola and is topped with Swiss, Mojo sauce, tomatoes, onions and a pickle slice before being griddled on sturdy Tuscan style bread. Dinner options are numerous, spanning the sea of cultures that is America. Campanelli Romesco features bell shaped pasta with a ruffled edge, so as to hold the tomato and Romano cream sauce, combined with fresh spinach, artichokes, mushrooms, tomatoes and pine nuts. Katy’s Dumplings
WESTMONT'S FRESHEST NOODLES AND DUMPLINGS A Chinese food favorite for nearly 20 years, Katy’s Dumplings is known for dumplings, noodles and pancakes, handmade, on-site. Katy’s makes 1,200 to 1,500 dumplings, and 100 to 150 noodle bundles per day. It’s labor intensive, starting with making the dough, rolling it, and breaking off thumbsize pieces that will be flattened into discs, by hand. The discs are filled with pork and chive or beef and scallion; the edges are pinched, readying them for cooking, or freezing into bags of 50 for sale. The intricate steps of noodle making are often shared by two. Dumplings are served steamed or fried. Try pork with chives, Napa cabbage or scallions, which add a subtle flavor enhanced by dipping options.
Juicy steamed buns, similar to soup dumplings, contain a liquid burst of flavor, along with various fillings. Larger buns, or bao, are delicious, with bottoms fried to a golden brown. The barbeque pork bun is always available; specials include the Tianjin bun filled with pork, mushroom and shrimp. Fresh-made noodles are used in soups, large enough for a meal. More noodle dishes are available under chow mein or stir-fry. Stir-fried pancakes are infused with spices and onion oil, then pulled and hand-rolled. A quick pan-fry lightly browns both sides. The pancakes are shredded and combined with ingredients such as pork and onion.

DJ’s Sports Bar and Grill KEEPING THE NEIGHBORHOOD BAR TRADITION ALIVE DJ’s Sports Bar and Grill has been a neighborhood fixture for more than 25 years. As DJ’s was a 2018 Reader’s Choice winner for best burger, expectations run high. Burgers are half pound, lightly seasoned, char grilled on a toasted brioche, or gluten-free bun. With your choice of cheese and a thick tomato slice, it’s worth returning for. The unique interior stems from the building’s history as a 1917 family home. Each owner converted a bit more home into a bit more bar, and 100 years later, we have DJ’s! Located at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Blackhawk Drive, DJ’s is an Official Blackhawks Bar. Begin with made-to-order tortilla chips, hot, crispy, and perfect for
dipping in cheese sauce or salsa. Or, go all in with the nachos. A mountain of fresh-made chips topped with nacho cheese sauce, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, salsa and sour cream. Proteins include chili, grilled chicken breast or steak. The chili is rich, thick and with enough heat to satisfy. Topped with shredded cheese and sided with your choice of onions, jalapeno, sour cream and chips, it’s a meal by itself. The New York Strip steak sandwich is bedded on a lightly toasted roll with a touch of garlic butter, and topped with melted Swiss, grilled onions and sautéed mushrooms. Sides are often an afterthought, but not so at DJ’s. Fresh-cut fries, freshcut chips, Cole slaw or onion rings are all winners.

Bishop’s Famous Chili GOING STRONG SINCE 1925 In 1925, when Chicago chili parlor cook Mary Bishop was fired for changing her employer’s house recipe, the four-time widow wasn’t thinking about her culinary legacy — she only wanted a way to support her family. So Bishop took her altered recipe on the road — or at least down the block from her former workplace, and opened Bishop’s Famous Chili, at 18th and Damen Avenues in Chicago. Ninety-plus years and four generations later, Grandma Bishop’s recipe is still a savory and spicy favorite of chili fans in the western suburbs. Bishop’s Famous Chili in Westmont serves chili, chili mac (made with spaghetti — a tradition that dates to macaroni shortages during
World War II), hot dogs, bratwurst and tamales. Bishop’s chili is tasty alone, or topped with shredded cheddar cheese, diced onion, sour cream, diced jalapeno and hot giardinera. Cornbread muffins, made on-site, round out the meal. To drink, enjoy a cold soft drink, Filbert’s Old Time Draft Root Beer — which started in 1926 — or one of eight varieties of draft beer. SO MUCH MORE THAN GREAT PIZZA With 40 years in business, Papa Passero’s Pizzeria and Family Restaurant includes three generations of the Passero family, beginning with Bill “Papa” Passero, and now Laura Passero Trilla and daughter Alexis. Papa Passero’s continue to provide exceptionally priced dining options for everyone. Let’s start with starters: many fried appetizers are available from mushrooms to cheese sticks to calamari. Quesadillas, bruschetta and garlic bread add to the impressive list. The sandwich section is enormous. From wraps to clubs – the turkey, bacon, Swiss with lettuce and tomato was huge, to Chicago staples – a cheesy Italian beef and sausage combo
was delicious. Papa Passero’s also plates a fine burger. My Papa double-decker burger with bacon and cheese was a definite two-hander. Several pasta dishes are prepared in-house, including lasagna: thick layers of cheese and pasta are baked and finished with a chunky red sauce. Broasted chicken is prepared using deep-frying and pressure-cooking combined to produce a crispy outside and moist product inside. Pizza is where Papa Passero’s began, and there is a variety of options. Crusts can be thin, medium, thick and custom choices like extra thin are all available.

Ruta Restaurant A TASTE OF EUROPE Ruta Café & Restaurant serves traditional Lithuanian fare. The red beet salad is a solid choice to start your meal. Herring, a Lithuanian staple, is served in generous portions with garnishes, including roasted potatoes, beet salad, pickled onions, tomatoes, dill and scallions. Hearty Eastern-European style soups include the cold beet soup, and a rotating selection of daily soups. The dense, dark seedless rye compliments the soup perfectly. Chicken and pork are menu staples and available in many combinations. Kabob or cutlet, sauced, breaded or both – there is an option for most diners. Potatoes are also featured prominently. The cepelinai, or zeppelin dumplings, combine grated
and riced potatoes to form a smooth puree. Hand flattened and filled with pork mixture, they are rounded into mini football shapes (zeppelins), then boiled. Topped with warm bacon and onion, this dish is found at the center of most Lithuanian tables. Potato pancakes arrive sizzling hot, the outside crust golden, the inside, creamy smooth. Desserts are beautifully presented often with fruit, sauce and a powdered sugar garnish. Dishes are reasonably priced and often provide the next day’s meal as well. Inside, Ruta is bright and cheery. Tables are decorated with fresh-cut flowers, and easily joined to create formal dining for large parties. Stop

UNCLE BUB’S BLENDS BBQ AND COMFORT FOOD Uncle Bub’s playful interior contrasts its serious approach to BBQ. Trophies from competitions around the country prove its authenticity and taste. Southern Nachos are smothered in chili, cheese, jalapeños, salsa and sour cream, with an added extra, pulled pork. The Onion Blossom is tart, crunchy and virtually greasefree, ready to dip into homemade buttermilk ranch. Hearty and flavorful homemade soups rotate daily. Dinner salads come topped with grilled chicken breast, pulled pork or smoked turkey breast. All meats are hand-rubbed and hardwood smoked on the premises. Uncle Bub’s specialty, pulled pork, shows up in many ways, from a quesadilla with fresh pico de gallo, to a burger topping. Other
options include a house-made hot link, brisket smoked for 12 hours. Baby back ribs are available daily; other ribs are on weekly or monthly rotation.
