Each day, light stays longer, and the unmistakable scent of raw, earthy energy begins to permeate the air with its fresh perfume. We are so blessed to live in a place where we can work hard and play just as earnestly with the help of regional treasures like our gorgeous forest preserves, timeless museums, award-winning libraries and the invigorating Fox River, to name a few.

So much relaxation and enjoyment of life is at our fingertips, from the escapist shores of Lake Geneva to the culturally rich nightlife of Joliet. You can spend a full day finding your joy in beloved Kane County on P. 36 or travel a little distance to get a big dose of peace at regional Bed & Breakfasts, P. 16, each one as unique and singular as the one before.

Wedding season is right around the corner and love is in the air alongside a healthy measure of anticipation and excitement. This time of year reminds me to not only find ways to renew romance with my husband, but love myself just as much. Perhaps you can find the time to pencil in a good old-fashioned spa day with the help of local favorites on P. 9.

If you’re anything like me and my family, you are ready to spend a full week of spring break with your kiddos. Find inspiration in Morton Arboretum’s Children’s Garden or Mind Trap Escape Rooms found on P. 41. If your kids are ready for a more “grown up” adventure, or you have free time for date night, check out the indoor golf scene on P. 26.

Take spring as a new beginning, remember to breathe, chase your joy, and find pleasure anywhere your heart leads you. Life can be pretty simple if you let it.

As always, thank you for reading!

WRITERS

¢ KEVIN DRULEY is a St. Louis transplant who lives in the western suburbs with his wife, Shannon. What Chicagoans call “pop,” he calls “soda,” although it’s really rather moot since he gave up such carbonated beverages for Lent in 1999. Kevin enjoys day tripping, reading, moviegoing and playing pickup sports. He recently encountered recreational pickleball and is over the moon.

¢ PATTI MACMILLAN loves words

— short and to-the-point, lyrical, even convoluted — she believes they all have their place in our wonderfully lavish lexicon. It’s the power and poignancy of words that drew her first to reading, and then to writing, which she has done as a journalist and public relations professional for more than a decade. When she’s not putting digital pen to page, she (mostly) enjoys time spent with her two young sons and husband though the woodland walks that allow her respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life she prefers sans company.

¢ VICKI MARTINKA PETERSEN

loves playing tourist right here in the Chicago area. Vicki juggles being a mom with her full-time job as a digital copywriter for a regional hospital system and her side hustle as a freelance writer for local niche publications. When she’s not negotiating with her son to go to bed, Vicki can be found meditating, practicing yoga, cooking and reading. She also volunteers at her son’s school and serves on the board of the AAUW Aurora Area Branch and Moms & More of Oswego.

¢ MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE

loves sharing stories and taking time to spotlight the amazing things people are doing in the community. These stories are an inspiration and a reminder of all the good in our world. As a busy mom to three boys she loves being able to escape into the stories she writes and all of the wonderful people she meets along the way. Melissa and her husband enjoy exploring new places and trying new foods with their three young sons. From delicate sushi rolls to tacos in fresh tortillas there are so many new destinations throughout the state to explore.

¢ DIANE KRIEGER SPIVAK is a lifer as far as writing goes. An award-winning journalist, she’s cranked out literally thousands of articles for newspapers, magazines, universities, and the Web. There’s always something new around the next corner, in her opinion, and sharing that stuff with readers is what makes her giddy. From her first-hand experience taking off at 500 mph with the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds to her interview with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s exorcist, to learning the finer points of finger painting from a 5-year-old, there’s pretty much no subject she’s not excited about tackling. She also likes anything vintage, off-the-wall, and an expertly crafted ginger beer.

¢ CHRIS WALKER loves stories. He’ll tell you how seeing Jane’s Addiction at The Riv in 1989 changed him, why Noah Baumbach’s “Kicking & Screaming” is his favorite film and why being a dad is one of the coolest things. He has plenty of great stories, but it’s writing and sharing yours that he loves doing most. When he’s not writing, you’ll find him parenting, watching or umpiring baseball, listening to music or reminiscing about his whiffle ball field.

Outdoor wedding venues are taking center stage this nuptial season

Wedding venue coordinators tout the qualities of their spaces as naturally as your Uncle Bill hankers for a second helping of prime rib.

In the next breath, however, many acknowledge the challenging decision facing brides and grooms to-be: whether or not the future mister and missus should choose that coordinator’s venue, or a different one. Finding the right fit is half the battle.

“Every venue is different in what they offer, so keep that in mind while touring,” said Katie Covalle, executive director at The Monte Bello Estate in Lemont. “Also know what you want out of a venue. Know their minimums, location – things like that. What’s included in your packages? What are your fees [and] costs to have a wedding at the venue? What does it include?”

Here, Neighborhood Tourist offers a glance at ideas and themes couples might consider when searching for that special place for their big day. And also, what to cast aside as the journey unfolds.

“Let the professionals stay on the timeline, handle all vendor requests, and keep it a stress-free day,” said Deanne Mitchell, director of catering at The Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva. “I love getting to know my couples, making the day magical and hearing guests say this was the best wedding. [I love] having couples come back for anniversary stays and staying connected through the years.”

NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SPRING 2023 13

Woodhaven Lakes is a private camping resort located in Sublette, Illinois, just 2 hours west of Chicago. We currently have an array of Woodhaven Lakes properties available. Each property is unique and they range from empty lots to trailers to park models. Visit our website to browse our current available properties.

HISTORICAL & ORNATE

Iconic features within or outside venues make for stunning backdrops in photos and the celebration itself.

Among those set to wed at the Post House Ballroom in Dixon this year is an Arizona-based couple with scarce ties to Lee County. They merely booked the venue upon seeing photos online, especially drawn to the two spectacular chandeliers in the converted, early 20th Century post office.

The chandeliers are believed to have originated from New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

“With our historical Post House Ballroom, you can go back in time and have a vintage setting, or you could decorate the room and make it the present day,” said Susan Lawler, executive director of the Lee County Council on Aging, which operates the ballroom. “It fits any décor depending on what you really want.”

TAKING IT OUTSIDE

Illinois is nicknamed “The Prairie State” with good reason, and numerous barn or rural-based venues complement its meaning.

Couples often find a certain serenity in getting married in nature and may have particular landscapes or natural features in mind as a setting for their ceremonies or receptions.

Still, it isn’t all farmland in Neighborhood Tourist country.

Blumen Gardens in Sycamore offers a lush garden backdrop surrounding an outdoor courtyard where exposed brick walls, industrial beams and seasonal foliage heighten the ceremonial atmosphere.

Exposed brick walls and seasonal greenery are also a highlight of the indoor reception space. Tall ceilings and twinkle lights add to the ambiance.

SCADS OF PIZZAZZ

The early stages of the waning COVID-19 pandemic spelled doom for many weddings, vastly downsizing guest lists or facilitating outright postponements.

With health and safety protocols continuing to loosen, venue personnel are beaming as many events trend toward the size and scope of the preCOVID era.

With that comes a boost in décor and entertainment, as if to make a statement.

Mitchell says she’s seeing a surge in bold and bright color schemes with patterns and textures. Years of smaller, socially distanced weddings are conceding to big-impact features such as live music, live painters and ornate balloons.

This year’s nuptial celebrations promise to be bigger and bolder with a breath of fresh air.

Travel pros take the stress out of vacation planning

Travel. Whether you are looking to fill up your passport or find a quiet spot to sit in the sand, there is one thing for certain. The time to plan is now.

The first few months of the year are always a busy time for Terri Henderson of Geneva Travel and Cruise, but after more than 33 years of experience in the travel industry, she said this year is already off to one of her biggest yet.

“There is a lot of pent-up demand for travel,” Henderson said. While it’s possible to book an entire vacation from one’s phone, there’s a renewed interest in seeking a travel professional who can research and book air and hotel reservations.

“With all my years of experience in doing this, and I travel as often as possible, I think that firsthand knowledge can be very helpful,” Henderson said. “My team and I are there before, during and after your travel.”

While tropical locations like Mexico, the Bahamas and Hawaii remain popular destinations, Henderson said she’s seen an increased interest in Europe for 2023, with Italy as one of the top locations. Her team can help a client whether they’re interested

in an escorted tour through the ruins of Pompeii or a visit to a Tuscany winery, and even find experiences, like making fresh pasta.

An internet search of resorts in Riviera Maya can list dozens of results. Kathy Barkauskas, concierge vacation planner and owner of Teddy Bear Travel, LLC, said she can help her clients find the one to best match their interest, whether it boasts great water parks for the family or a quiet resort with great dining options.

One of Barkauskas’ favorite itineraries is helping families plan their Disney vacations. As a child, she grew up going to Disney World each year for a family vacation. It was after taking her own children to Disney World that she realized the opportunity to change careers and follow her passion for travel and travel planning.

She’s quick to point out Disney travel today is far different than the experiences of her childhood, and a travel professional can be a great asset, from navigating accommodations with more than 30 on-property hotels to helping a family plan experiences like meals with characters or special activities. She often sets her alarm for a 4 a.m. wake up to book her clients dining reservations.

“Having a travel agent is a nice luxury,” she said.

The past few years have rocked the travel industry and if there’s one lesson to be learned, it’s say yes to travel insurance, Henderson said.

“We’ve always recommended it, but more so now after COVID,” she said.

Travel insurance can provide cancellation protection, medical coverage while traveling and some plans even provide protection if one needs bed rest, quarantine or to extend a trip due to illness.

“Not all travel insurance is created equal,” Barkauskas said. “Shopping for travel insurance is almost as important as shopping for the trip itself.”

For international travel Henderson said it’s important to check passports and make sure they are valid at least six months after the date of travel return. She said processing for passports appears to be back to normal, but she encourages anyone applying or renewing to do that as early as possible to avoid stress.

NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SPRING 2023 26

Off for a

Time

This time of year, you never know if golf courses are green or covered in white, or if pulling the kids around on sleds is more suitable than pulling out your driver and the rest of your clubs.

Regardless of the weather, today there are ways to play golf indoors; you just need to look to find them. The great thing is, you won’t have to waste time looking for slices in the woods or lose balls in water hazards when you do.

l l l

Smash Factor Indoor Golf, 367 Illinois Rt. 59, Aurora, uses the latest technology to provide players with awesome, realistic golf course views as well as club swing and ball data. The result is a game that mimics the reality of being outdoors on amazing courses. Smash Factor welcomes newcomers, many who have such a great experience that they sign up for league play.

l l l

The Mistwood Golf Dome, 1700 W. Renwick Rd., Romeoville, is home to a fully heated 60,000-square-foot dome. To put that in perspective, a typical golf course is at least 86,000 square feet, so this is a huge place for golfers of all abilities. Mistwood features Toptracer, which is recognized as the top range technology in the game today. Play virtual golf on the world’s best courses, interactive games and stat tracking in one of the 30 hitting bays featuring HDTVs, as well as food and beverage service.

Score 18 Indoor Golf, with two locations – 1466 Chicago Ave., Naperville and 501 S. Weber Rd., Bolingbrook – lets players choose from more than 150,000 courses to play on in gorgeous 4K reality. Its simulators allow you to see your ball fly in real time while accurately measuring distance, trajectory and launch speed. The option of viewing the club head’s position throughout impact provides a valuable learning experience as well. Don’t feel like playing, but want to hit the little white ball? You can visit the virtual driving range and still scratch that golf itch while waiting for Mother Nature to play nice.

Those who haven’t yet tried to swing a golf club could not pick a better place to do so than Top Golf. Even if you miss the ball or hit a worm burner, you can’t miss with a diverse menu of delicious food and drinks and a welcoming social experience. You don’t even need your own clubs to participate with complimentary clubs available, nor keep score as the high-tech balls do it for when you aim at the giant outfield targets rather than typical greens. With climate-controlled hitting bays and music, this is an experience, like Danny Noonan, that you don’t want to miss. It’s a hole in one for everyone. Locations at 3211 Odyssey Ct., Naperville and 2050 Progress Pkwy., Schaumburg.

l l l

Those who are looking for a less entertaining experience, but one-onone time working on their game, will be more inclined to drive out to a heated range. Addison Park District, 880 W. Lake, St., Addison, has a heated golf dome with 40 Toptracer bays.

Finally, any mention of indoor golf without including Golden Tee would be a big-time bogey. Since its introduction in 1989, as it quickly rose to be known as the “pool table of the next generation,” Golden Tee has become a fixture at many bars and pubs. Today, you can find the location of its nearest games at www.livewire.itsgames.com/ find_a_game.

Restaurateur Carlos Aréchiga

Experience the true hospitality of Mexican culture and introduce your palate to gorgeous and delicious cuisine

Restaurateur Carlos Aréchiga has opened his family’s tenth location as a restaurant group, overall, and his first official eatery in downtown Geneva.

“We have been in the restaurant industry for nearly twenty years, and we have been business owners for eleven years now,” says Aréchiga “We started, with my parents, a fast, casual place serving Mexican food. Salsa Verde, our location in St. Charles, is the kind of operation we’ve been doing for the majority of the time.”

As the years went by, Aréchiga and his brothers started experimenting with their cuisine and business model. “We wanted to bring a little bit of what we enjoy when we go to Mexico, and we wanted to emulate the places that we like

to spend time at when we go to the city,” says Aréchiga. “That’s how Hacienda Real came about and now here we are.”

Aréchiga is especially delighted to open his newest restaurant in Geneva, a community he and his family have long admired. “To start out, we are very familiar with Geneva due to the location of Salsa Verde, which is very close to downtown Geneva,” says Aréchiga. “We’ve had an eye on this community for a while and it has become a dream to have a bigger, more full-service restaurant. I found this location and thought ‘this has to be ours.’ We are right in the commons where Bar Louie used to be.”

Family is in the fabric of Aréchiga’s restaurant group, woven throughout their story and their menu designs. “Hacienda Real, for us, is a very

fun experiment because we have that familiar and traditional aspect of Mexican Cuisine and we still work at the family business level where mom and my brother are designing recipes,” says Aréchiga. “We have those recipes from mom, but we also have the innovation from my brother. I like to call it ‘traditional dishes with an exciting and innovative twist.’”

Aréchiga’s first Hacienda Real location is in Yorkville and since its opening, they have dedicated themselves to keeping their menu fresh and reflective of the seasons. “One of the things I like most about our restaurant is that our menu is constantly changing,” says Aréchiga. “We print it about every three months, but we do have some core items because they are everyone’s favorites. We also like to bring

DA REAL

NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SPRING 2023 31

something new; we like to evolve with everything around us from the weather to the trends. We like to adapt.”

Mom’s recipes are the cornerstone to Hacienda Real’s flavor. “The Cochinita Pibil is a pork dish we serve in a hot lava bowl; it comes with tortillas on the side, and it has a really cool, delicious flavor to it,” says Aréchiga. “We have a big influence with seafood because we are from a coastal state of Mexico, so we include things like shrimp tacos and grilled octopus. Right now, in winter, Pozole is a pork soup that my mom usually makes and it’s one of those that, if she’s not in the kitchen and we run out, we won’t have any until she’s back. Only she can make it.”

Home is at the heart of Hacienda Real, an echo of the Mexican hospitality Aréchiga is thrilled to bring to his restaurants. “We have a reputation for being hospitable and one of the ways we connect is always through food,” says Aréchiga. “When we are at home, we always gather around the kitchen island or at the dinner table. My restaurants are an extension of that. I want my guests to sit back and relax. It’s a way of being and it’s an everyday thing for us.”

Aréchiga brings his hospitality-first mindset into every aspect of the restaurant, ultimately seeking to extend those values toward the customer’s experience. “It’s about promoting Mexican hospitality to the fullest,” says Aréchiga. “To be able to communicate that inviting warmth and open arms atmosphere is directly related to our concept. Even though we are designing a trendy and sophisticated dining space for the people in Geneva, it’s still a very approachable and homey, enthusiastic vibe.”

The family is ready to serve Geneva with satisfying and exquisitely delicious Mexican fare in an incredible atmosphere. “We love St. Charles, Batavia, and everyone around us,” says Aréchiga. “We can tell they have a caliber and an expectation, so all we want to do is make sure we live up to that expectation. To me, it’s a love letter to everything that has happened and the way my business has grown.”

what can you

DO IN A

Spring is in the air and, if you’re like most of us, you’re just itching to get out of your winter cocoon and head out into the world. Kane County really does offer “something for everybody” in terms of food, entertainment, and culture. So, if you’re in need of day trip, check out a few of our suggestions here.

MORNING

Now that you’re fully fueled, head out to Garfield Farm Museum, a 150-year-old pioneer museum in Campton Hills. Spend time getting back to America’s roots and a slower-paced way of life through tours, special events, and educational programs like bat and blue bird box construction, fruit tree grafting and heirloom gardens.

BREAKFAST

Start out early at Buttermilk Cafe Restaurant and Coffee Bar in Geneva. The brightly lit urban barn interior is actually the color of buttermilk, but it’s the bean that’ll really wake you up. Espresso, macchiato, latte, cold brew, and just plain old coffee will open your eyes, along with a plethora of breakfast plates like Holy Moly Skillet or lemon blueberry pancakes.

MID-MORNING

If biking (or hiking) is more to your liking, the Fox River Trail runs 39 miles from Oswego north to Algonquin. The well-maintained and highly rated trail passes through beautiful scenery and historic towns, so there’s plenty to do on whatever leg of the trail you take.

DAY?

12+ hours of dining, destinations & activities around Kane County

LUNCH

For lunch, head out to GIA MIA pizza bar, in Geneva or St. Charles, for its “chef-driven, farm-to-fork food concepts” such as Neapolitan style wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, antipasto, and hand-made mozzarella. GIA MIA also has a mixology bar with specialty craft beers and an exclusive wine list.

AFTERNOON

After lunch, make tracks to the FermiLab in Batavia where you can tour the U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. This is where researchers explore the fundamental nature of matter and energy, space and time. You can also tour the grounds where you’ll see Fermilab’s buffalo herd. There are monthly events to attend as well. Find out more by subscribing to Fermilab Frontiers, Fermilab’s community newsletter.

MID-AFTERNOON

After absorbing the wonders of physics, why not relax with a 50-minute boat ride on a St. Charles Paddlewheel Boat up the river and back. There’s even a sunset boat ride.

DINNER

For dinner, Stockholm’s Restaurant and Brewery in Geneva offers a step above your typical brewhouse fare. Their beer is handcrafted onsite. Teetotalers, please note they brew their own root beer, too. Their seasonal from-scratch menu includes favorites like mouthwatering ribs, brisket grilled cheese sandwiches and a great seafood selection.

EVENING

After dinner, it’s back to St. Charles, where you’ll spend an evening at the historic, beautiful Arcada Theatre. Take in a live show with just about any genre of rock, oldies, and Hollywood nearly 200 days a year, plus occasional silent movies for old movie buffs. Upstairs, enjoy Club Arcada, a Roaring 20s-themed restaurant and bar for late-night libations.

There you have it: your Kane County day trip. But know there are way more sights to see, activities to enjoy, and places to eat throughout the county. You can start your search with Google and local tourism bureaus.
