Dear Readers, We have gone through many changes over the past several months but as always, starting in February, we turned our attentions to our annual Community Review Magazine. Our efforts start early and while it is a lot of work for us, this year, under unprecedented times due to the pandemic, we felt it was even more important than ever to focus on what makes our community GREAT – Our local businesses, their employees. This magazine is our annual look at the local business community. We give our local businesses the opportunity to have an article written about their business so they can tell our readers what has been going on in their company. Please take the time to look through this publication and let these businesses know you saw their ad or article. Our local businesses and their employees are the lifeblood of our community and now more than ever they need your support. Every dollar you spend with a local business comes back into the community. We encourage your feedback. If you have ideas on how we can improve this magazine or any of our other publications, please feel free to reach out to me. You can reach me, Jeanette Smith at jmsmith@shawmedia.com. I hope you enjoy reading our magazine as much as we enjoy bringing it to you and as always I encourage everyone to SHOP LOCAL!!! Thank you,

Don’t Forget Ab With today’s media outlets reporting on tragic and troublesome news stories from mass shootings and other violence to natural disasters and pandemics, it is understandable that at times, there is fear, stress and anxiety circulating among us. Benjamin Shepherd, MD, a board certified family medicine provider from St. Margaret’s Center for Family Health in Princeton, emphasizes that “During this uncertain time with the COVID-19 pandemic, we all need to take care of our mental, as well as physical health.” Your feelings are valid. Life is different. Today’s events cause us to be more vigilant and alert, as well as more cautious than ever before. While being concerned can be a good thing that helps keep people safe, too much can lead to harmful effects on both your body and mind. Furthermore, allowing concern to develop into constant worry can affect not only you, but your loved ones as well. Children learn how to react to and deal with stress, hardships, danger and fear from the adults in their life. Teach them how to be safe and cautious when necessary without it consuming them and robbing them of the joys and innocence of childhood. The threats we face are real, so it is important to take care of yourself and teach children and youths to do the same. For adults, make a point to only check the news once or twice a day. This will keep you informed of any important information you may need, but doing so in this manner will not overwhelm your mind with too much negative news. Children, especially young children, do not need to watch the news. Keep an open discussion with your older children and listen to how they are feeling. Teach them ways to avoid letting uncertainty and fear takeover.
Stay Safe. 4 Saturday, April 25, 2020 | Community Review | A NewsTribune Publication

Here are some helpful activities you can do when stress and anxiety creep in and start to become overwhelming: Be aware of where your thoughts are going. If you start to mull over things that make you feel afraid and anxious, consciously change your thoughts to something more positive. You can face whatever today may bring. Focus on today, not tomorrow or two weeks from now – just concentrate on what you need to accomplish in the present. Whether it be receiving a chronic illness diagnosis or facing some other threat, try to find the light. Instead of searching the web for worst-case scenarios, look for the stories of the successes or watch videos of those who have survived or recovered. Concentrate on the positive stories about humanity and community. When your mind starts to catastrophize and wander towards the “what-ifs” and worstcase scenarios, fix your mind on the things you love and make you smile, watch films or shows that make you laugh, read a favorite book, scripture or inspiring stories, do something creative, have fun at home with your family or connect with friends. Focus on what you can control and not the things that you cannot. Be a helper. Sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves when we need help is to give. Whether it be
n
time, money, service or a smile, be generous. You will find that doing so can positively impact you as well. When distance is necessary during this pandemic, maintaining a sense of community is important. Call those elderly neighbors, friends, and family members and check on them. Insure they have everything they need, so they don’t have to risk going out in public where they can contract the virus. Connect with others in ways that create unity and a sense of togetherness. For example, Italians in lockdown spend evenings singing together from their balconies. The songs may all be different, but the voice is the same. You are not alone. We will make it through. Exercise, meditate, breathe deeply, pray, sing, dance, smile and laugh. These small things can greatly impact your physical and mental health during times of stress. It is also important to eat healthy foods and get proper rest. Maintaining a routine is important as well—especially for children. If work or school is on hold, do some activities at home that maintain a sense of regularity. Get ready for the day and set to work on what you can. Kids can spend this time reading or doing some online lessons and learning activities. Keep them on a similar daily schedule as before. Routine gives children a sense of safety and familiarity. They know what is expected of them and what
to expect. If you can’t do your job from home and are required to stay home, this is the time to accomplish some work around the house or start laying out a plan on how to accomplish your dreams. No matter what tomorrow may bring, we will get through every adversity together. We are resilient, creative, wise, compassionate and skilled. To all the helpers and those required to work to keep our communities healthy, safe and fed, we appreciate you and all that you do. Dr. Shepherd adds, “Please reach out to your healthcare providers, family and friends if you have worsening mood or anxiety, and don’t neglect your mental health.” If you or a family member are struggling with depression or anxiety or are overly stressed, make an appointment with your primary care physician or counselor. Your healthcare providers are here to help.
“
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

The scanner has the Q.Clear feature, which allows for more accurate tumor measurement. VRHS can scan patients in half the time and with a lower dose of radiation. “We’re able to see smaller tumors,” said coordinator Karen Karczewski. “That means sooner diagnosis and sooner treatment, which hopefully will lead to a better outcome for the patient.” The scanner has the ability to scan patients from head to toe without having to move them. Valley Regional Cancer Center introduces faster, more precise treatments close to home Valley Regional Cancer Center (VRCC) is proud to be the first provider to bring stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to the Illinois Valley area. SBRT is a cancer treatment that delivers extremely precise doses of radiation to cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. It also shortens treatment times for most cancers to just minutes, which means patients can spend less time in the doctor’s office and more time enjoying their daily lives. VRCC offers SBRT and other advanced treatments close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel hours to surrounding cities for therapy. In 2017, Valley Regional Cancer Center joined The US Oncology Network, the largest physician-led organization of its kind uniting
integrated, community-based practices dedicated to advancing evidence-based cancer care with a personal touch and the convenience of care close to home. Cancer can be the biggest challenge a patient faces, making it critical to obtain care at a cancer center with access to promising new therapies and advancements. Are you mechanically inclined? Learn from Unytite Unytite specializes in the manufacturing of standard and custom-designed fasteners along with other cold and hot forming products used in various industries. They are also a proud partner with Illinois Valley Community College who is a leading sponsor of IVCC’s manufacturing expo. Manufacturing companies are focusing on making the industry attractive for the Millennials. They have to revisit their training strategies to make it relevant for this workforce. Training strategies need to become more engaging and inspiring. Unytite is among one of the local manufacturers that have participated in the annual North Central Illinois Discover Manufacturing Career Expo, held each fall at IVCC. Through the expo, local high school students
tour several local manufacturing facilities before arriving on IVCC’s campus for breakout sessions with hands-on activities. “We want to show that there are careers and opportunities in the manufacturing world,” said Atsushi
Hashimoto, executive vice president, “It might not look as fancy as Google or Amazon, but our bolts are used in their facilities and warehouses! In addition, you will be surprised with how dynamic we can be not being a huge company. We will need this generation in managing roles in the future to keep us going.” “We’re excited to have the chance to introduce teens to the world of manufacturing,” said Susan Monroe, IVCC’s Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment Coordinator. “So many people don’t realize the wide variety of products created by people in our communities — let alone the different types of jobs available at our manufacturers.” Eligible AAS degrees or certificates include certified production technician,
CAD, computer numerical control, electricity/electronics, engineering technology, HVAC, industrial maintenance or electrician, machinist tool and die, manufacturing technology or welding. Unytite Inc. has been manufacturing structural nuts and bolts in the Illinois Valley for the past 30 years. Most known to be for the high-quality, 100 percent American-made structural fasteners. Since then, Unytite has consistently provided the highest quality products to their customers across the world. Currently, Unytite is manufacturing 1” TC Bolts for the construction of the new hangar for Air Force One in Prince George County. What does Unytite do? “Unytite holds the world together!”

Advanced Chiropractic helps patients of all ages Dr. Ryan Smith at Advanced Chiropractic in Peru uses a very gentle chiropractic technique that has helped a variety of people, from infants to the elderly, called Atlas Orthogonal. After a consultation, Smith uses X-rays to determine how the neck is misaligned and then uses a machine that is designed to deliver just the right amount of pressure to correct the angle. Oglesby: Family-friendly and Vital The City of Oglesby is a family-friendly community with a growing economic base, an excellent public safety record, proximity to Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks, competitive schools and green space for families to enjoy. Oglesby also has a rich tradition of patriotism, as many citizens and city officials have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and are dedicated to preserving the memory of those who risked their lives in defense of American freedom and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Here, at a recent Memorial Day service, Mayor Dom Rivara, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, rings the bell during a roll call of Oglesby residents who died in war.
Grace Bible Fellowship
Our aim at Grace Bible Fellowship is to magnify the glory of the Triune God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, we preach Christ in all the Scriptures because we believe God’s Word is able to change lives. Our desire is to be a church where God is worshiped as He unites us and grows us in Jesus Christ. If you are looking for a church family or searching for answers in life, we invite you to visit us for worship or contact us. We’d love to meet you and have you join us on the joyful journey of following Jesus Christ.

Connecting Point has 8 service engineers, allowing them the flexibility to dispatch an onsite service call within 24 hours and to provide immediate personal assistance via telephone. Their motto, “We Provide Solutions,” reflects
the promise Connecting Point makes to its customers to supply the correct solution for their IT needs. Connecting Point president Jeff Borelli and his staff of 20 have supported the Illinois Valley Area since they opened in downtown Peru. “Our business encourages our employees to volunteer and
donate their time as often as possible.” Borelli said. “Being active and involved in our community has always been a cornerstone of our company.” Shopping online or at a big chain store doesn’t offer the same customer service you receive at a local business in our community. “Online companies like Amazon do not support our communities.” Borelli said. “Our prices are better and we provide the very best customer service,” Borelli said. “Our customers matter to us. They are the reason we have been in business for 54 years.” To find out how Connecting Point can help you, call (815) 223-1052, email sales@ cpointcc.com or stop by the store on U.S. 6 in downtown Peru. The fun begins when you get home JTS Pools has been bringing fun to Illinois Valley homes for the past 31 years with stores in Ottawa and Peru and now in Bradley. JTS Pools offers swimming pools, high-quality Baquacil and Poolife pool chemicals, spas, darts, billiards supplies and more. “If you want the best price for high-quality, high-performing pool chemicals, check us out,” said owner Jim Matthews. “We have the best prices on 3” chlorine tablets too. We beat the discount stores and online.” JTS Pools has a completely chlorine-, bromine- and saltfree pool sanitizing system. Oxygen Pools replaces harsh chemicals to sanitize pool water and replaces it with pure oxygen. This new technology is easier, gentler, less corrosive and less expensive than other systems, especially corrosive salt systems. JTS Pools offers two great lines of American-made spas.
NOW WITH
JTS Pools owner Jim Matthews (from left), Josh Swietek and vice president Darryl Lopez offer Illinois Valley residents high quality pool, spa, billiards and darts equipment at locations in downtown Peru, Ottawa and Bradley. JTS Pools is the only pool company in the area that is a member of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP). Call the Peru store at (815) 224-4676, Ottawa at (815) 433-4664, Bradley at (815) 939-4600 or visit jtspools.com. Store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Garden Leisure Spas are a high-quality acrylic spa made in Tennessee. And we offer Aspen Spas made in St. Louis. Both brands are built using quality American-made components as well.
3 LOCATIONS!
“Our prices beat the big box stores and online sources. With so many choices we can find an above-ground pool that fits your budget,” said Josh Swietek. “And we service every
spa purchased through JTS Pools, which gives our customers peace of mind when buying.” “We are committed to Made in the USA. Our Wilbar above-ground pools are made here. We support American companies and American workers. Not only is the product superior but our customers prefer American-made because they know they are getting a higher quality product, which will last longer,” vice president Darryl Lopez said. “We are proud to offer Radiant Pools made in New York. These pools are totally rust-free and insulated so they stay warmer. They come with a lifetime warranty as well. There is no better pool on the market than Radiant and we are happy to have been selected as the area’s only dealer. The first Radiant pool installed over 65 years ago is still standing in New York. Radiant pools are built to last.”

Your Community! Your Y! We’re more than a Gym! “At your local Y, we look at your physical well-being, but also your purpose, your community, your family and different things that influence your well-being besides your physical health, “says CEO Dave Potthoff. The Illinois Valley YMCA is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our Y serves nearly 9,000 members and thousands more in a variety of programs. The Illinois Valley Y has a fantastic wellness center with over 150 different modern exercise machines, over 50 different exercises classes with live instructors each week. The Y also has two full gyms, separate free weight room, tumbling gym, private locker-rooms, steam rooms, trained staff, indoor walking track, Y 30 Zone, and selectorized weight machines. The Y link Aquatic Center offers three pools. The eight-lane lap pool is used for lap swimming, swim lessons, exercise classes, and the 150-member youth swim team. The 92 degrees therapy pool includes underwater treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, and strategically placed warm water jets to hit major muscle groups. The family pool has a zero depth playground, lazy river for water walking, big and small slides, and a play area for the kids. The water park is popular for birthday parties and Y-sponsored family nights. “The Y is the areas leading provider of child care, teaches hundreds to swim, offers programs for all ages and has a facility 2nd to none. If a community need arises on a positive collaboration the Illinois Valley & Mendota Y is involved. Were community. Everyday thousands of lives are impacted by the Y” Potthoff said.

Steinberg’s Furniture committed to service
A lot has changed at Steinberg’s Furniture over the past 132 years, but one thing has remained the same. The family-owned business remains committed to customer service. “It starts with our sales staff,” said Bruce Steinberg, the fourth generation of his family to operate the furniture store. “Their income is not dependent on commissions, so it creates a helpful, non-pressured atmosphere for the customer. We also have a full in-store service department to quickly take care of any customer service needs after the sale.” The store is located on U.S. 6 at the west edge of Peru, just a block from local icons like The Igloo and Lou’s LaGrotto. Though the store’s front may look small, the showrooms contain 30,000 square feet of displays from wellknown furniture brands such as LaZ-Boy, Bassett, Homestretch, Ashley and others. Steinberg’s also contains a Mattress 1st Sleep Shop. The in-store
shop features mattresses from Serta, iComfort, Simmons-Beautyrest and TempurPedic. Also, the store now features the Support Report imaging system to guide customers to the correct mattress. “The system measures an individual’s pressure points with the same technology used to evaluate patients at the Mayo Clinic,” Steinberg said. “It guides a customer to the correct group of mattresses for their body type. Each group contains a selection of mattresses at different price points. It lets you select your mattress based on your body’s pressure points, not pressure from a salesperson.” Steinberg’s is a member of Furniture First, a nationwide buying group of more than 250 independent stores. This gives the store the same buying power as large chain stores, and the savings are passed along to the customer. The company also has added new features to their website. See for yourself at steinbergsfurniture.com.
The Support Report Mattress Diagnostic system is part of the Mattress 1st Sleep shop inside to Steinberg’s Furniture. The system takes various pressurepoint readings and recommends the best mattresses for each customer. The family-owned business is located on U.S. 6 on the west end of Peru and offers the area’s largest furniture and mattress selection, plus great service and the best deals in town.

Be a part of the City of La Salle’s ever growing Celebration of Lights display Join a yearly community celebration and purchase a light display at La Salle’s Celebrations of Lights. At least 45 displays are on the list to be added to this year’s display. Those interested in getting a sign should contact Beth Ketter at 815-223-3755 ext. 5026 or email her at b.ketter@lasalle-il.gov. Beth will go over your budget with you as well as ideas you want for your unique sign. There is only a one-time fee involved; you purchase your display, as well as the sign for $100. The city takes care of the rest with maintenance, setting up and taking down and storing the display
and sign. You can purchase a custom display or purchase one from a catalog. Any discounts the city receives with the displays are passed along to you. “Most people participate because they love it and it’s a great event,” Beth said. The displays can also work as advertising for your business as well as a memorial display for family members. The deadline for custom displays is soon. The deadline for a display from a catalog is Sept. 30. “It has grown by leaps and bounds every year,” Beth said about the Celebration of Lights.
La Salle’s Celebration of Lights display is bigger and brighter than ever. The yearly Christmas display added 30 new displays this past season and included over 250 displays in total. “Most people participate because they love it and it’s a great event,” said Beth Ketter with the City of La Salle. The displays can also work as advertising for your business as well as a memorial display for family members. At least 45 displays are on the list to be added to this year’s display. The city is adding an extra road at Rotary Park, which will allow more space for displays.
La Salle offers a welcoming business community throughout, not just Downtown La Salle offers competitive incentives for new businesses looking to open, businesses looking to expand or add a 2nd location as well as developers looking for sites with close proximity to I-80/I-39 and the Illinois River. Through our facade grant program, business owners can receive up to $25,000 for updates to their street facing storefronts like the installation of new windows, new doors, brickwork improvements, and ADA upgrades both interior and exterior to name a few. La Salle has seven TIF districts that offer tax incentives to developers and builders within those districts. Sales tax abatements and additional tax credits may also be available through a floating Enterprise Zone. La Salle is also registered with AirBnB to allow for automatic tax payments from guests if you are interested
in listing your property! TIF maps, facade grant applications, and additional details can be found on the city’s website under Development. La Salle is OPEN for business! La Salle’s new economic development director Leah Inman’s job also includes commercial matchmaking! Leah notes, “If you have a commercial property you are interested in selling or leasing, I will work with my network of businesspeople, realtors and developers to help find a match! Or, if you are looking to open or expand into La Salle then let me help you find the perfect space for your business to thrive. IVCIL is ready to help—Serving people with disabilities and their families Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit, non-residential service and advocacy organization based in La Salle that assists persons with disabilities in opening doors to their independence. Our mission is to: n Enlighten persons with disabilities and their families about their rights; n Empower them to assume maximum responsibility to realize their full potential; n Enrich the lives of all persons with disabilities in LaSalle, Bureau, Marshall, Putnam and Stark Counties working towards full inclusion of each individual in society. “Having a disability is only a part of the individual. We get to know the person and their family. IVCIL becomes an important part of their support system said Executive Director Sarah Stasik. As a community-based,
non-residential center for independent living, we work to increase the involvement of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life. We strive to enhance their potential to achieve and sustain self-directed living in home or community settings, depending on their choices. Essentially, independent living means experiencing life as everyone else does. IVCIL is consumer-driven and run by people with disabilities, who have successfully established independent lives. We believe no one can represent disability rights and independent living issues with more credibility than those whose lives are directly affected by a disability. IVCIL has five core services: Information and Referral, Advocacy, Peer Counseling, Independent Living Skills Training and Transition Services. IVCIL is located at 18

Illinois Cement Co. has been an important part of the mining industry in the Illinois Valley for more than 40 years.
Illinois Cement Company T
A Historical Perspective
he current Illinois Cement Company facility may have had different owners and names over the decades of operation but since 1897 it has produced high-quality Portland cement for such notable projects as the Shedd Aquarium and Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The site originated as an ideal location for a production facility because of vast limestone reserves, abundant coal, which provided a fuel source, and access to the famous Rock Island and Illinois Central railways for reaching markets in Chicago and the Midwest. The first company to produce Portland cement at the site was GermanAmerican Portland Cement Works, a subsidiary of Portland Cementfabrik of Hamburg, Germany. Their product was marketed under the name of
“Owl Cement.” Interestingly, the German operators also found time to brew beer at the site. When the United States entered World War I, the assets were taken over by the U.S. Alien Property Custodian and production continued under the name of La Salle Portland Cement Company. Then, in 1919, a syndicate of investors purchased the facility and, in turn, sold them to Alpha Portland Cement Company of Easton, Pennsylvania. Alpha operated the plant for 50 years but ceased production in 1970 due to aging equipment, large capital needs and challenging markets. The average workforce of 160 people lost their jobs. In 1972 a joint venture was formed between Centex Corporation of Dallas, Texas
and the Pritzker family of Chicago to acquire the La Salle Alpha Portland Cement Co. operations and reserves which had been shuttered several years earlier. In 1973-74 the new partnership, named Illinois Cement Company, built a modern, state of-the-art “dry process” system at the site with a production capacity of 1,125 tons per day. Since then, the plant has expanded and has been progressively modernized to remain at the cutting edge of technology and energy efficiency. Today, after an $80 million plant expansion project in 2006, it now has a permitted capacity of 3,000 tons per day. While quarrying activities are now based in Dimmick Township, the early years saw limestone required for production being mined from the La Salle Quarry, blasted, crushed
and belt-conveyed into the plant. Mining there continued through the late 1990s until the limestone reserves in the La Salle Quarry were depleted. However, dating back even earlier — to the early 1990s — discussions began with the city of La Salle regarding a plan to reclaim the La Salle Quarry to create property suitable for recreational and community use, including a large lake. “We are pleased that this has become known as Rotary Park, an exciting municipal La Salle project. The new La Salle Wastewater Treatment facility is also built on former Illinois Cement property which was donated to the city. Illinois Cement is proud of our heritage and our 45 years in La Salle and the Illinois Valley.”

Hurlbert & Bauswell’s Hurlbert & Bauswell’s Basement Water Control can solve all of your wet basement problems. Jack Bauswell is the local officer for Hurlbert & Bauswell’s. Hurlbert and Bauswell’s has protected hundreds of homeowners from costly water damage to their basements. It makes no difference how finished the basement is — there is no basement too complex to protect. All work is done on the inside. Hurlbert and Bauswell’s does not try to stop, dam or block water. Water does two things naturally; water seeks its own level and finds the point of least resistance. The systems Hurlbert and Bauswell’s use allow both of these laws of nature to happen. Hurlbert and Bauswell’s offers a system for any and all basement water problems. For complete details on systems and/or a free estimate, call Hurlbert and Bauswell’s at (815) 223-7676. Hurst Funeral Homes serves all faiths and also provides pre-paid services and pre-arranged trusts to give families comfort and peace of mind. The Hurst family strives to serve their clients’ needs and best interests and to make the experience as emotionally-reassuring as possible. “We are honored by the trust Illinois Valley families have repeatedly placed in us during the most difficult of times,” owner John Hurst said. “Serving the bereaved with dignity is a Hurst family tradition that we’ve proudly carried on since World War II.” That is a tradition that John learned from his father, Jim Hurst, who learned from his father, founder Arthur Hurst. Today, that legacy of trust and compassion has been passed on to John’s son, Hayden. That trust has led to wide-

Springfield Electric: Supply products and services to make you profitable Springfield Electric not only serves the community by supplying electrical products (to contractors, industrial facilities, hospitals, etc.), but we also provide services to our customers that help them be more productive and profitable. Manufacturers, for example, need to keep their facilities and production lines up and running, to prevent downtime, in order to continue to provide products to consumers and other end-users. This is where Springfield Electric’s Industrial Sales and Services Teams come in. Because there are so many parts and pieces critical to the maintenance, repair and overall operations of a manufacturing facility, it can be challenging to maintain and manage necessary inventory should an un-

Springfield Electric supports these facilities in those inventory management tasks — tracking inventory,
keeping the right inventory on-hand, and replenishment when inventory gets low. These are functions a distributor does daily — we
are experts at receiving material, tracking and fulfilling orders for our customers, so it comes naturally to help a manufacturing facility handle those same functions. The manufacturers, in turn, can focus on production. Manufacturers also have machines and equipment that can overheat or break down over time. Springfield Electric also provides preventative maintenance services that support these facilities in testing equipment for potential impeding problems and maintenance. Partnering with manufacturers in this way is just one of the ways we serve our community. Springfield Electric has been in business for over 85 years, with 19 locations throughout Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Indiana.

ILLINOIS RETINA & EYE ASSOCIATES, PERU, IL
I
f our eye is like a camera, the retina is its film on which the image of the outside world is formed. The image is relayed to the brain by the optic nerve. The center of the retina is called the macula that gives us fine vision, such as reading, threading a needle or watching TV. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blurriness or loss of central part of vision in the U.S. There are two types of macular degeneration, dry and wet. Dry AMD: All cases of macular degeneration start out as dry, which is a change in the macula due to aging. Yellow white spots called drusen form in the macula usually in individuals over 55 years of age (Figure 1). Over a period of many years, cells over these drusen die off leaving behind blurred or dark spots in vision. Approximately 11 million Americans have dry AMD. Wet AMD: Dry AMD can turn into wet AMD in about 10 percent of patients. Abnormal blood vessels start to grow under the macula and cause leakage of fluid or blood causing fluid buildup or swelling in the macula. Hence, the name wet. Leakage and bleeding in the macula can cause a rapid

If untreated, wet AMD progresses rapidly and eventually, the macula is permanently damaged by scarring leading to blindness. Approximately 250,000 cases of wet AMD are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Unique Features: Macular degeneration is painless, and doesn’t cause redness, light sensitivity or discomfort. Because both of our eyes are focused on the same object, it is very easy for a patient to be unaware of a vision change in one eye. Therefore, each one of us should check our vision for reading or watching TV in each eye by covering the other eye for a few minutes every day and report any new changes promptly to your eyecare provider, such as blurriness, wavy or crooked lines, or a dark spot. Oak Ridge is perfect for your golf, dinner and event plans Oak Ridge Golf Club, east of La Salle on U.S. 6, has a great championship golf course. Established in 1994, the course has bent-grass tees, greens and fairways, which are an area favorite. From the back tees, the golf course measures just over 6,800 yards. Four sets of tees are offered to accommodate any skill level. Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club sprawls across gently rolling terrain that was used to guide the design. The resulting layout blends in almost seamlessly with the natural landscape. The golf course is routed through forests of mature oak trees and around five sparkling lakes. The back nine plays along a meandering creek. Water hazards come in to play on a total of 13 holes and there are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout. The golf course demands a fair amount of accuracy but it’s not overly punishing if you’re errant. And to stay on

Besides a great menu, a 30-foot-tall stone fireplace and a scenic view of a picturesque lake enhance the ambiance. The menu features everything from sandwiches to prime cut steaks. The last part of the clubhouse is a 10,000-square-foot banquet center that can host parties, weddings or company functions up to 400 guests. HCC, Inc.
Anderson Pool Supply
Since 1883, HCC has been a major innovator in agricultural harvesting equipment and farm equipment products, with the invention of the first commercial grain weigher, the H.D. Hume pickup reel, and the floating cutter bar. Over the next century, the company expanded, diversified and merged with other cutting-edge agricultural firms to grow into the world’s largest producer of reels, sieves and chaffers for combines. From our early days of Hart-Carter products, this company, which began with the vision of a Midwest farmer and a storekeeper, has held a close association with the market place to insure that every product is focused on productivity for harvesters.
Family-owned Anderson Pool Supply has serviced the La Salle-Peru area for more than 50 years. During that time, we have earned the reputation as an expert in the installation of in-ground swimming pools and service. We carry in-ground and above-ground pools, Nordic hot tubs, chemicals, toys, wave pads, pergolas, outdoor kitchen/bar, fireplaces and fire pits, Come visit us at 301 W. Pleasant View offers a variety of options
G
enerations of Ottawa neighbors have known Pleasant View as a leading residential and health care option for the area’s older adults. What some do not know, however, is that over the past several years the tree-lined campus on Ottawa’s South Side has been redeveloped. In every effort to faithfully serve the needs and expectations of tomorrow’s aging population, Pleasant View is offering a new variety of options today. As a life plan community, which used to be referred to as continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), Pleasant View provides independent living options connected to a campus of thoughtfully planned health care solutions. Futureminded older adults choose maintenance-free living within one level villa homes with the confidence that options on the same campus are available to them, if they’re ever needed. If some assistance is needed to more successfully pursue optimum wellness, and enjoy all that each day
has to offer, Hearthstone Assisted Living at Pleasant View is a popular option. This licensed assisted living program is designed for those who seek the thoughtful balance of a maintenance-free lifestyle with the assurance of dignified assistance, when needed. A person-centered approach, focusing on the individuality of each individual served, is driving new short-term and residential health care options within Pleasant View’s health care center. An innovative “My” series of programs are so named to emphasize the priority placed on understanding individual preferences and routines, supporting each person’s unique daily rhythms. MyRehab is the Pleasant View’s short-term rehabilitation program. When a friend is sidelined by an illness, injury, joint replacement or hospital stay, MyRehab is available to help speed up a successful recovery and return home. Services include physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy and other rehabilitation services,
all supervised by highly skilled health professionals and therapists. MyNeighborhood is home to residential skilled nursing suites. MyNeighborhood health care services are overseen by a medical director — a physician specializing in the unique needs of seniors — as well as an experienced director of health care services. In addition, MyNeighborhood maintains a strong staff-to-resident ratio and ensures that all professionals receive high quality, ongoing training. A level of living specifically for those with memory care needs is called MyTapestry. Every life is a tapestry. Every individual is a unique combination of experiences, beliefs, preferences, daily routines and passions woven together to create a one-of-a-kind life. MyTapestry understands that living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of age-related cognitive impairment changes many things; but it never changes the value of every individual. MyTapestry is a thoughtfully designed, secure, main-
tenance-free environment. Lifestyle programs include options for entertainment, education, recreation, and spiritual focus that are specifically created to engage individuals with memory support needs. Three daily, chef-inspired meals are served bistro style with the ability to accommodate special diets. In addition to their programs, Pleasant View is also one of the few nursing homes in Illinois that is Joint Commission Accredited with additional certificates for Post Acute Care and Memory Support Care. They’ve also recently been named one of the US News & World Reports Best Nursing Homes. Black Bros. Co. – Mendota’s Oldest Manufacturer Black Bros. Co., the oldest manufacturing firm in Mendota, can trace its roots in the area back to the turn of the 20th century, although the company history goes even farther back than that. Founded in 1882 in Lanark, Scotland, by the five original Black brothers – William, John, James, Walter and David, as well as their father, William Sr. – the business was relocated in the late 1880s to Chicago before the five brothers, their father, and their families ultimately settled in Mendota in 1899. Over the next 121 years, Black Bros. Co. has transformed from a small woodworking shop into a world-renowned manufacturer of roll coating and laminating equipment. Originally used for wood only, Black Bros. Co. has expanded over the years into a wide variety of other industries and applications
including metals, plastics, foam and electronics. Black Bros. associates have designed, built and tested more than 30,000 machines and delivered them across the globe to every continent except Antarctica, earning them an international reputation for innovative engineering, quality manufacturing and
dedicated support. The manufacturers who use Black Bros. Co.’s equipment include producers of furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, wall paneling, ceiling and floor tile, insulation, rubber flooring, plastic containers and RVs, to name a few. The people at Black Bros.
are not only committed to producing quality machines, but also to the Illinois Valley. Black Bros. employees can be found volunteering for many area organizations, including the local Chamber of Commerce and various civic and youth organizations throughout the area.

March of Dimes still partnering with the local community The March of Dimes has a March for Babies walk in April in La Salle-Peru every year. The march continues the fight to help expectant mothers get the support they need and to help save the lives of babies in the local community. Premature birth is the leading cause of death among babies in the United States. It affects about 380,000 babies — that’s 1 in 10 — born each year, including more than 16,000 each year in Illinois. Funds raised by March for Babies supports the March of Dimes’ mission to improve the health of babies by preventing premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. March of Dimes carries out this mission through research, community services, education, online support and advocacy efforts to provide comfort and support for moms. The Illinois Valley has been a tremendous supporter of the March of Dimes over the years, and fundraising events in the community have raised
hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fight for its mission. “We are more than grateful for the support and efforts given to the March of Dimes over the years by this community,” said John Blair, who serves on the March of Dimes board in North Central Illinois, and lives in Peru. “We do not want to let the people down who have worked so hard and fought so long to build up this great partnership.” Moms and babies across the nation have benefited from the March of Dimes for more than 76 years. The March of Dimes will continue fighting for its mission in La Salle-Peru, and hopes this outstanding community will continue to offer its support. Together, the March of Dimes and the Illinois Valley can continue to give every baby a fighting chance. Learn more at https://www. marchofdimes.org

The Hospice of Choice for Illinois is VITAS® Healthcare Hospice has grown since the late 1970s, yet its methods and practices are often mysterious to those who haven’t experienced them firsthand. This arm’s-length approach to the end of life has led to some misconceptions about the care that surrounds it. VITAS® Healthcare’s goal is to dispel the myths with facts and hope: Hospice is not a place. It’s a model of comfort-focused care, usually provided in a patient’s home or preferred setting(e.g., nursing home or assisted living facility). Choosing hospice does not mean giving up;in fact, studies suggest that hospice patients live longer, higher-quality lives than patients who continue curative treatment until death. And hospice does not rely on high-dose narcotics to dull patients’ senses. While pain-relieving drugs might be prescribed to ease symptoms
Staff members at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care who help the terminally ill and their families include (front row left to right) Lori Wheeler - LPN, Josie Klass - Social Worker, Rosana Madrigal - Business Manager, Dr. Fizza Deen, Laurie Gunia - Patient Secretary (far right Wendy Johnson RN), (back row left to right) Kristi Christiansen - VITAS Representative, Deanne Braun - RN, Judy Scheeler - Patient Care Administrator, Sherry Hanson - RN, Chaplain Rick Hillenbrand, Alyssa Beavers - RN. as needed, VITAS offers integrative services to provide relief with greater awareness and fewer side effects. Today, VITAS is the na-
tion’s leading provider of end-of-life care, providing care to hundreds of patients and their families in La Salle and throughout Central and
Northern Illinois. VITAS proudly offers services and treatments that other hospices cannot or do not. From 24/7 Telecare to Paw Pals® pet visits, VITAS supports patients and their families on emotional, social and spiritual levels while providing compassionate clinical care. These unique professionals supplement the comfort-focused care delivered by our hospice teams, each comprising a physician, nurse, hospice aide, social worker, chaplain, volunteer and bereavement specialist. Hospice teams also support patients’ families and day-today caregivers. For everyone at VITAS, from admissions to marketing, from home care to grief support, hospice is more than a job–it’s a calling. On May 1 the United States officially recognizes Law Day. It is meant to reflect on the role of law in the foundation of the country and to recognize its importance for society. Before President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared May 1 to be Law Day, U.S.A., the first day of May was known in some parts of the world as May Day: a day to remember the struggles of workers in their fight for better wages and working conditions. Law Day was originally the idea of Charles S. Rhyne, Eisenhower’s legal counsel for a time, who was serving in 1957–1958 as president of the American Bar Association. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1 to be Law Day, U.S.A. in 1958. Its observance was later codified by Public Law 87-20 on April 7, 1961.

The City of Peru: A great place to live and invest in P
eru logged its best-ever year at the cash register. Long known as the leading place to shop in North Central Illinois, Peru posted nearly $630 million in sales in 2019, toppling five monthly sales records and cresting $600 million or more in sales in back-toback years. “If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a business, or have considered relocating one, come talk to us and see what we can — and will — do to help you,” said Bob Vickrey, director of economic development. “There are prime parcels and incentives available to anyone who’d like to hitch their wagons to a city with a monthly retail sales volume of over $50 million.” Brisk business has in turn led to competitive, wellfunded schools and stable property taxes. Peru boasted the lowest total tax rate (including schools, libraries, township services) of any comparably-sized community in the region and by far the lowest municipal rate. Mayor Scott Harl paid city hall less than $140, or about 3½% of a total tax bill of $3,950. “Peru is a terrific place to raise a family,” Harl said. “We’ve got nice neighborhoods, good schools, park space for kids, a ton of activities for families and we work hard to keep your taxes in check.” City officials also are committed to public safety and are hard at work on a centrally-located police station to ensure rapid responses as the city expands its borders with residential, commercial and industrial growth. The city recently retained Leopardo Construction to oversee development of a new public safety plaza on 6.5 acres located west of Hy-

Peru pledged to build the the new station, which will be more centrally located within city limits, without raising taxes. Vee at Midtown Road and North Peoria Street. “We feel pretty strongly that’s going to be the center of the city,” said engineer Eric Carls. And Peru police chief Doug Bernabei said the disparity between residents and visitors is bigger than people might realize. Between shoppers and workers, the volume of cars and people
in Peru swells more than 12-fold during the daytime hours. “As a bedroom community we’re 10,000,” Bernabei said, “but during the day our retail and commercial population draws on 120,000 to 150,000 people each day.” Mayor Scott Harl has pledged to build it without raising property taxes, as the city has a sterling credit
rating and available budget space now that several bonds have been retired. The proposed station not only replaces the obsolete headquarters in downtown Peru but also will include a training room available to the community, more space for evidence storage, and segregated parking lots for the public and for emergency vehicles.

IVCH plays a big role in the Illinois Valley’s economy I
llinois Valley Community Hospital continues to be a major driver of local economic growth. With almost 600 employees, IVCH is not only the largest employer in the city of Peru, it is also one of the largest employers in north central Illinois in addition to being a big purchaser of goods and services. Add it all up, according to the Illinois Hospital Association, and you’ll find IVCH has an annual economic impact on our area of almost $196 million. “Not only does IVCH play a vital role in our community by providing healthcare when it’s needed most, it also plays an important part in strengthening our local economy,” said Tommy Hobbs, the hospital’s chief executive officer. The IHA says one in every 10 Illinois jobs is in healthcare and that for every hospital job in the state, 1.4 jobs are created in other sectors. Hospitals are unique among American businesses in that they turn no one away who needs their services. IVCH is no exception: everyone is treated regardless of their ability to pay. IVCH provided approximately $7.9 million in unreimbursed charity care to Illinois Valley residents last year. More than Mako®: The Illinois Valley Orthopedics medical practice has been busy with the addition of Connor Kasik, DO, who joined the IVO team last fall. Dr. Kasik and Robert Mitchell, DO, are both skilled in using Mako® robotic arm-assisted technology in performing joint replacement surgery. They are also expert in a wide
