Norberg Memorial Home Inc. & Monuments is honored to be celebrating their 120th Anniversary in 2023 For 120 years families have trusted Norberg Memorial Home & Monuments to honor their loved ones. The business origins can be traced back to E.A. Vaughan, a business man who at one time owned and operated a bookstore in Princeton. In 1900 he returned to Princeton as an undertaker and established a business known as Vaughan. The business would become Norberg Memorial Home when Arthur Norberg purchased the business in 1922 and relocated to 120 S. Vernon St, and to its current location at 701 Thompson St., in 1968. In 1955 Vaughan hired Bodie Smallwood, veteran who had returned from the Korean War. Bodie graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science and went on to become a business partner and eventually sole owner in 2003. Bodie’s son JD chose to

attend mortuary school and carved his own path in the business working in Indiana and completing clinical work at the Cook County Morgue during the horrible heatwave of July 1995 when more than 700 died. In 2003 JD became

GROW Spring Valley Grow Spring Valley is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community through various events and activities. It is a collaboration between residents and the business community to turn ideas in to action and have a positive impact on the growth of Spring Valley. Formerly known as the Spring Valley Boosters, the committee members of Grow Spring Valley are working hard to create opportunities for our community to come to gather, to celebrate and bring new neighbors to our city. We had a fantastic summer with the Friday Night Market, featuring more than 40 artisan vendors, food trucks and live music in our downtown on the third Fridays in May, June and July. Thanks to support from the city, in August there was a big

Friday Night Market Finale with fireworks in Kirby Park where thousands attended. As we move into the holiday season, we have some exciting projects lined up starting with Elves Night Out on Thursday, Nov. 9 a retail/ business night out/wine walk to welcome the holiday

season. Mark the calendars for Christmas in the Valley Saturday, Nov. 11. This event includes trolley rides, music, a vendor fair, a petting zoo, Santa photos, and Breakfast with Santa. Saturday, Nov. 25 will be the Lighted Christmas Parade “Bring the Light Back.” Our

lighted parade has a special theme this year, “Bring the Light Back,” which signifies our effort to bring joy to our town after the loss of our city Christmas Tree in a fire this summer. We’re fortunate to have received a $10,000 grant from the Ann Baker Trust, and we’ve allocated $2,500 to the City’s Community Center project, $500 to support Spring Valley Police Department’s National Night Out, and $2,000 to expand the downtown speaker project to the west and far east sides of St. Paul. The remainder of the grant will be reserved for future community projects. Be sure to visit our social media page, Facebook page for the latest information on events and committee planning meetings to share your ideas and talents as together, our community can GROW.

Ready - Set - GROW! GROW Spring Valley is a collection of community members and business owners with the common goal of growing Spring Valley to its full potential. Be a part of the movement! SM-LA2108337

Spain: Illinois’ Professional Licensure system “outdated”; stifles job growth PRINCETON — “One of the primary obstacles to getting many new Illinoisans, or longtime residents changing careers, to work, earning a living and paying taxes, is our state’s antiquated and outdated professional licensure system. We have to change it if we want to grow Illinois economy, whether in rural communities or Illinois’ large cities,” said State Ryan Spain Representative Ryan Spain (R-Princeton). As a result of this dysfunctional licensure system, industry professionals from nurses to barbers to roofers can experience wait periods of three to nine months to begin working. House Republicans have fought for the General Assembly to pass needed legislation to upgrade the computer system with accompanying funding increases, but the status quo remains under Democrat supermajority control over state government. At least 40 different professions require state licensure to work in Illinois, and these lengthy delays leave people out of work and the state leaving taxable income on the table. In many cases, professionals in seasonal and outdoor industries can miss out on an entire year of income waiting out the current licensing system. Professional licensure is intended to ensure public safety and maintain professional standards, but it can also create barriers to stifle economic growth. Individuals are asked to meet specific education and training requirements, and that can create barriers to entry. If the supply of professionals is restricted, consumers see higher prices and rising costs for services. Over one million people in the state need a professional license to work. Governor Pritzker has been quoted as saying

the number of processors at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has been increased from 20 to 45 since 2019, leading to what he claims are average license processing times being reduced from 10 to 12 weeks to four to five weeks. Quite simply, that is not accurate, nor is it good enough. Rep. Spain has worked with IDFPR officials on this issue, and with needed reforms those wait times could be reduced even further, to just one week in many cases. “Getting licensed to earn a living and serve the residents of Illinois should not require such a difficult and lengthy process,” Spain emphasized. “My constituent service staff has created a top-notch system for tracking these delays for constituents, from cosmetologists to roofers to nurses, and while we work hard to advocate for these applicants individually, the licensure system is stacked against applicants to work, in favor of an abysmally slow bureaucracy.” A limited supply of licensed professionals, especially in fields like mental healthcare and social work, can result in cost increases for consumers and shortages for some of our most vulnerable populations. That is why Spain’s office works so closely on these cases for area residents and why Spain focuses his work on changing the outdated licensure system for Illinois. Spain emphasized, “if you are experiencing a professional licensure delay with a state agency, please contact my office. Not only will we advocate for your application being processed, but these firsthand reports and our detailed record-keeping help inform the policy changes needed in Springfield to fix these problems.” Spain concluded, “in a state where we need more people working and thriving here with their families, it just makes common sense to focus on ways to get people to work here as quickly as possible.”

Fiscal Conservative Ryan Spain fights for a comprehensive balanced state budget that doesn’t spend more than we bring in. He opposes income and property tax increases and understands we need pension reform and other fiscal reforms to close our budget deficit. He believes ethics reforms are paramount to reforming government spending.

Fighting Government Intrusion and Overreach

Fiscal Conservative

From his background in local government to his service in the Illinois House, Ryan has opposed unfunded mandates. He’s fought to protect local government funding from raids and sweeps, has boosted local road funding, and believes government closest to the people is the most accountable to taxpayers. Spain has fought to empower parents to be involved with their children’s education and healthcare.

Protecting Our Core Values and Rights Ryan Spain is a lifelong Republican. He is a law-and-order conservative with Central Illinois roots and the strength to stand up for the core values important to bringing families back to Illinois.
