celebrity update

Lisa Ann Walter OF ABBOTT ELEMENTARY ON ABC

Q: It was fun to see Lisa Ann Walter win the latest “Celebrity Jeopardy!” tournament. I know she’s on “Abbott Elementary” now, but what other series has she been in?

A: The actress-comedian seemed the most surprised of anyone that she emerged victorious in the January championship that pitted her against Katie Nolan and Mo Rocca. She has done plenty of guest roles, but her work as a series star dates back to the mid-1990s, when she toplined the short-lived Fox sitcom “My Wildest Dreams.” Soon after that, she had another brief run in the ABC comedy “Life’s Work.” In 2001, she starred with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse in NBC’s “Emeril” (which also featured Carrie Preston, now of CBS’ “Elsbeth,” as well as “The Lazarus Man’s” Robert Urich and current talk-show host Sherri Shepherd). After those, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” (which premiered in 2021) has been Walters’s steadiest on-camera series job — though she also was a co-creator of the competition series “Dance Your A– Off,” which was shown by Oxygen in 2009-10. Among the many shows for which she has done guest shots have been “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “GLOW,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Las Vegas” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Walter — who still does stand-up comedy engagements — has been quite active in the feature-film world, too. The movie titles to her credit include “The Ice Cream Truck” (2017), “You Can’t Have It” (2017), “Killers” (2010), “Drillbit Taylor,” (2008), “Entry Level” (2007), “Coffee Date” (2006), “War of the Worlds” (2005), “Shall We Dance?” (2004), “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “The Parent Trap” (the 1998 remake) and “Eddie” (1996).

A PWHL Wednesday night doubleheader

The inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season continues with a Wednesday night doubleheader on March 6 as Boston travels north to take on Toronto at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, with the match streaming live on YouTube, while PWHL juggernaut Montreal visits New York at UBS Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with all the action broadcast live on MSG.

As Boston looks to remain in the top half of the standings, Hamilton, Ontario, native Sarah Nurse and her Toronto teammates have managed to remain in the mix after winning only three of their first eight games during the league’s opening month. During the slow start in January, Nurse managed a goal and two assists, with Natalie Spooner adding to the goal column with five goals throughout the month — surely something Boston will be looking to shut down.

Meanwhile, New York gets set to take on a talented Montreal squad. Since both teams are loaded with offensive talent, it’s no surprise they were among the top teams in total goals through January.

For Montreal, it comes as no shock that they have been the favorite to win it all, with Marie-Philip Poulin proving why she’s one of the top talents in hockey as she leads her team with seven points, including six goals.

However, if there is a spark that can get things going in the right direction for New York, it’s none other than 26-year-old Canadian Ella Shelton.

Shelton has shown all season long why New York made the right selection, taking her fourth overall in the 2023 PWHL draft. The defender out of Ingersoll, Ontario, has already put up impressive numbers this season, sitting top five amongst all players with three goals, five assists and eight points through January — giving New York a big reason to remain optimistic for season ahead.

Kate Winslet in “The Regime”

cover story Winslet, Grant star in new political drama

A story that began a decade ago with a family living in sunny San Diego, this spin-off of “The Fosters” follows along as Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) tackle the highs and lows of living their own, independent lives as young adults in Los Angeles. After endless career changes, relationships and new friends, the story now comes to an end, when the final episode of “Good Trouble” premieres Tuesday, March 5, on Freeform. Flip through the pages of your local newspaper or turn the television to your preferred news network and you’ll see it: a plethora of stories chronicling the ins and outs of national politics. Often times, the politics are related to your own nation, but in order to understand one’s own country’s goals, desires and needs, the news must also look abroad. While these news updates and articles center exclusively on real-world issues in a 24-hour news cycle context, one HBO series is going above and beyond to bring real concerns into a scripted environment.

“The Regime,” a new limited miniseries from creator Will Tracy (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”), takes an in-depth look at the intricacies and concerns that come hand in hand with an authoritarian government. Set in Europe and created as a peek behind the curtain of fascism in the making, “The Regime” premieres Sunday, March 3, on HBO and Max.

Previously operating under the working title “The Palace,” “The Regime” stars “Titanic” (1997) and “Mare of Easttown” actress Kate Winslet in the role of Chancellor. Although the term has often been associated with Germany, Winslet’s chancellor is the sinister and darkly comedic leader of a fictional European country. As the HBO teaser trailer illustrates, the titular regime is determined to see “a new Europe without limits [and] without cruelty,” but what that means for the regime is wildly different from what that means for its country’s people.

According to HBO, the miniseries “tells the story of a year within the palace of a modern European authoritarian regime as it unravels,” and who better to tell that story than the people behind some of the most successful business and political dramas of recent years: “Succession” and “The Crown.”

Brought to life by directors Stephen Frears (“The Queen,” 2006) and Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown”), series creator Tracy made sure to bring many talented satirists into the writers’ room with him. Helping him realize his vision for a dark and satirical political dramedy are

It’s more tempting than ever to trade in city chaos for country charm, and this couple couldn’t resist the call of nature. Following Davina and Kristin as they tackle their big move to New York’s Hudson Valley — ready to fulfill their aspirations of a farmto-table lifestyle and create a big, blissful home to raise their daughter in — the all-new series, “Small Town Potential,” premieres Sunday, March 3, on HGTV. Gary Shteyngart (“Succession”), Juli Weiner (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”), Jen Spyra (“Our Cartoon President”), Sarah DeLappe (“Bodies Bodies Bodies,” 2022) and Tracy’s “The Menu” (2022) co-writer, Seth Reiss.

In front of the camera, big-name stars Hugh Grant (“Love Actually,” 2003), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie,” 2022) and Martha Plimpton (“Generation”) join Winslet. Additionally, Matthias Schoenaerts (“Red Sparrow,” 2018) and Guillaume Gallienne (“Marie Antoinette,” 2006) star in recurring roles alongside Patrick Fusco (“Quiz”), Vinodini Patel (“Wicked Little Letters,” 2023), Alasdair Hankinson (“The Lost King,” 2022), Donald Sage Mackay (“The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies”) and Louie Mynett (“The Man Who Fell to Earth”).

While “The Regime” takes place in a fabricated Middle European nation, several locations in the series may look familiar to Austrian viewers, or those who have previously visited the country’s capital city of Vienna. The city, which was used as the series’ primary filming location, is filled with Baroque architecture and an old-world European vibe that provides “The Regime” with a perfect setting, complete with grandiose palaces and gardens. Chief among these edifices is Liechtenstein Garden Palace, which is reportedly the location of much of the series photography, per the German-language online newspaper, Kurier.

While travelers may be taken with the backdrop, movie buffs may recognize the sardonic, over-the-top dark humor from Tracy and Reiss’s recent popular horror film, “The Menu.” A deeply critical commentary of the absurdity and pomp of the modern luxury dining experience, if “The Menu” is any indication of Tracy and Reiss’s writing style, “The Regime” is bound to be a scathing reflection of international politics.

Tune into the premiere of “The Regime” Sunday, March 3, on HBO and Max. New episodes air weekly until its anticipated April 7 finale.

OF THE PARENT ‘HOOD ON THE WB

Q: What happened to Robert Townsend? I loved “The Parent ‘Hood,” and thought that he’d go on to other shows, but he didn’t.

A: Robert Townsend’s career is a vast iceberg, and for most people, “The Parent ‘Hood” is the tip.

His story has become a bit of a Hollywood legend: he came to L.A. from Chicago to get into the acting biz, but when faced with the limited — and stereotypical — options available to young Black actors, he decided to start making his own movies.

He self-financed “Hollywood Shuffle” (1987), a parody film that turned a mirror back on Hollywood itself and became both a critically beloved hit and an indie landmark. It launched his career as what Hollywood likes to call a multi-hyphenate, in his case, a producer-director-writer-actor — not always in that order. And he’s continued that way since, with more and more emphasis on behind-the-camera work.

“Hollywood Shuffle” led to more features, where he earned loads more critical acclaim behind and in front of the camera, but only modest fame.

He turned his hand to sitcoms with “The Parent ‘Hood,” which aired on the WB Network from 1995 to 1999. This is where most people — people who aren’t as plugged into the Hollywood scene or indie films — came to know him.

His entrepreneurial and activist spirit then led him to seek yet another new challenge, serving as president and CEO of a whole TV network: the Black Family Channel. It only existed briefly, from 2004 to 2007, but made a mark as a family-friendly alternative to cablers like BET.

Most of his work since then has been behind the camera as a prolific director and occasional film producer. Again, those roles have often coincided, such as in the 2009 documentary feature “Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy.” He also did the full multi-hyphen in 2013, producing, directing, writing and starring in the family-friendly drama “Playin’ for Love,” about a high school basketball coach trying to turn his team around.
