‘Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge’ is leading the way on NBC

Q: As “Barry” wraps up its four-season run, how do you reflect on having had the job?

A: I was 27 when I came to Hollywood, and I got The Fonz (on “Happy Days”). And then, I was 72 when I got the call from (co-creators) and executive producers) Bill (Hader) and Alec (Berg) to be in “Barry.” I am overwhelmed that I work with these great people. I mean, every one of them. And I am overwhelmed that I continue to live my dream, actually.

Q: How have you approached your “Barry” character, acting coach Gene Cousineau?

A: Gene tries to be the best teacher he can be. And I have had the experience of holding master classes, and it is one of my favorite things. I’m not sure I know what I’m talking about, but whatever I’m feeling about what the actors in front of me are doing.

It is my pleasure to try and get them to taste something different than they came into the room with … just by pushing them a little bit. So, it goes back and forth. I take Gene with me, and I bring Henry to Gene.

Q: How did it work for you at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in making “Barry” without being in the same physical space as most of the other talents on the show?

A: It seemed like, because of the way it worked out, we were all in our pods and none of us crossed over and met other characters except for Bill. Everybody’s thread went to Bill. I missed (those) guys.

Q: Early in the run of “Barry,” you were a major part of a promotional campaign for the series that showed Gene on New York subway posters pitching acting lessons by giving a phone number to call. Did you enjoy doing that?

A: I thought it might have been the best campaign I’ve ever been part of, and I did the voice for the phone number – so if you called the phone number, you literally heard me talk to you. I was so proud, because I took that subway for the greater part of my life before I came to Hollywood. I was so thrilled to be part of that campaign.

Marcus Ericsson looks to continue Indy500 success

If you’re a fan of motorsport racing, then Marcus Ericsson is sure to ring a bell.

Born on September 2, 1990, in Kumla, Sweden, Ericsson currently competes in the NTT IndyCar Series, and since 2020 has been driving the No.8 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. However, like all talented drivers, there is always the starting line.

Ericsson began his racing career at the early age of nine, competing in go-kart racing, and working his way up the European ranks. Gaining experience and confidence, he eventually would move up to single-seater racing in 2007. Ericsson would go on that year to win the Swedish Formula BMW Championship, officially kick-starting his professional racing career.

Following a successful rookie debut, he competed in various Formula Three series races, coming third place in 2008, and finally winning the British Formula Three Championship the following year. This would pave the track to a higher level of competition for Ericsson; joining the Formula One feeder series, GP2. After a successful three years competing in the GP2 Series, and finishing the 2013 campaign as a runner-up, it marked a pivotal moment in the Swedes racing career.

2014 would be Ericsson’s official Formula One debut. While only spending one season with his debut team, and four with Sauber, Ericsson was never able to secure a podium finish while competing in Formula One. However, it would be the experience gained that would later prove to be valuable, as his move to the IndyCar Series in 2018 would shift his career into high gear.

Joining Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and making his IndyCar Series debut in 2019, Ericsson placed 17th in Championship standings, with his best performance at Belle Isle coming in 7th, making it an exceptional debut season behind the wheel.

Looking to continue his success, Ericsson would join Chip Ganassi Racing in 2020, finishing 12th in overall standings that year, including four top-five finishes. However, 2021 would prove to be his most successful yet. He would finish the season 5th in championship standings, seven top-five finishes, 12 top-ten finishes, including coming in first place at the Indianapolis 500.

Ericsson will be looking for another victory at this years Indianapolis 500, one of the most prestigious races in the world of motorsport. The Swedes’ experience and skill will make him a strong contender for this year’s Indy 500 title.

Fans will be eagerly watching as the Indianapolis 500 airs on NBC Sunday, May 28.

Hot TV: ‘Hot Wheels’ competition comes to NBC

Unlock some memories and kick it into high gear with NBC’s newest competition series, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge.” Premiering Tuesday, May 30, the unscripted show is equal parts “nostalgia and creativity” (per NBC) as each contestant overhauls one of their most beloved and memorable vehicles, ultimately transforming it from an average automobile into their dream car. Hosted by “Top Gear’s” Rutledge Wood and featuring a panel of car-loving celebrity guests, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” is inspired by childhood fun and a healthy dose of friendly competition.

NBC describes its new 10-episode competition as follows: “Each episode will invite two passionate car fans and Hot Wheels lovers into the Chrome Zone, where they will face off in each transforming an ordinary vehicle into an extraordinary Hot Wheels showstopper, inspired by personal stories and pop culture touchstones. Working alongside a team of automotive magicians known as ‘The Car Pool,’ the two Superfans will manufacture their designs in high-tech, decked-out garages.” There is also a chance to raise the stakes via “the Inspirationator 5000, a larger-than-life vending machine that will rev up in each episode to present the Superfans with a twist in the road.”

While Wood acts as host, he will surely not be the only familiar face seen during the wild ride. Perhaps unsurprisingly, two famous car lovers are also welcomed to the show’s premiere season as guest judges: former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno and star of the Fast and Furious saga, Sung Kang.

Leno, who also hosts the web series “Jay Leno’s Garage,” is the proud owner of roughly 180 cars and 160 motorcycles, valued at more than $52 million. Widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable car fanatics in Hollywood, Leno will bring his insight and interest to “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” as he assesses the final products presented by the eager contestants. As for Kang, who originated the role of Han Lue in the third Fast and Furious film, subtitled “Tokyo Drift” (2006), the actor has collected several custom cars over the years. These include a Nissan 240SX, a 1967 Mustang Fastback and the 1973 Datsun 240Z he restored himself and which he “affectionately refers to as ‘Fugu Z,’ according to the Rubber B website, which featured Kang in a promotional profile for the Swiss watch brand.

Corie Henson, executive vice-president of unscripted programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, announced her excitement for the program in a statement, saying, “Everyone remembers their first car, the life experiences they had and the friends who came along for the ride. Hot Wheels is a legendary brand with broad appeal that has created a space for imaginations to run free. We are so thrilled to partner with Mattel to combine this nostalgia with fantastical, extreme car transformations.”

“I ink You Should Leave With Tim Robinson: Season 3” (May

Back for more off-the-wall and hilariously cringe-worthy content, this Emmy-winning sketch comedy series pokes fun at some of life’s most bizarre and mundane situations. Usually featuring co-creator Tim Robinson (“Saturday Night Live”) as the one who should leave, the series sees Robinson and his guest stars navigating hilariously socially awkward predicaments, from choking on hot dogs and hosting an intervention in a Garfield-themed house to uncomfortable job interviews and much more.

“Firebuds: Season 1, new episodes” (May 31)

Six new episodes of this computer-animated children’s series follows a young boy named Bo Bayani (voiced by Declan Whaley, “ e Lake”), who teams up with his anthropomorphic fire truck friend, Flash Fireson (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), to keep the city safe from threats of danger. Joining Bo and Flash are Jayden Jones (Jecobi Swain) and his police vehicle, Piston Porter (Caleb Paddock); and Violet Vega Vaughn (Vivian Vencer) with her ambulance, Axl Ambrose (Lily Sanfelippo).

Q: Is Chris Isaak still acting? What is he doing now?

A: After dabbling a little with acting in the ‘90s, it seems that rockabilly singer Chris Isaak has returned to his first love.

These days, he’s focusing on his music, touring extensively and, just last year, releasing a new Christmas album.

Once upon a time, though, he seemed primed for screen stardom. He appeared in the cult classic 1992 film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” (a followup to the even more beloved TV series), did a few other films, and in 2001 got his very own scripted TV show, aptly named “The Chris Isaak Show.”

But perhaps the show revealed the limitations of his range. Though it was a scripted sitcom, he was literally playing himself, yet critics still suggested he wasn’t up to the task. Nonetheless, the show lasted three seasons. But after Showtime canceled it, his acting output diminished greatly. He had previously said he would pursue acting only as long as it didn’t interfere with his music career, so perhaps starring in a TV show violated that rule.

Whatever the reason, his music fans are benefiting from his renewed career focus.
