Jonathan Groff OF

GLEE ON FOX

Q: It was nice to see Jonathan Groff win a Tony Award recently. Can you remind me of the character he played on “Glee”?

A: He was in the Fox series from the start when it began in 2009, and he already was a Broadway veteran by that time, having gotten particular notice for “Spring Awakening” … which also brought him a Tony nomination, and which teamed him with Lea Michele, with whom he would work again in “Glee.”

His character in that show, Jesse St. James, was a principal performer in the singing group Vocal Adrenaline — rivals of New Directions, the group that included Rachel Berry (played by Michele). Jesse was dispatched to woo the hugely talented Rachel, the aim being to throw her off her game when it came to competition between the groups. However, things changed when he truly fell for her, and when he learned the secret that the coach of Vocal Adrenaline (played by Idina Menzel) was Rachel’s biological mother.

Though Groff had a reasonably sizable presence during the first season of “Glee,” he became a recurring player as the show went along, appearing only occasionally. His return in the series finale seems even more prophetic now where Groff is concerned, since Jesse and Rachel went to the Tony Awards as a married couple, with Jesse already being a Tony winner who was directing a Broadway production that Rachel was in.

Just before “Glee” ended, Groff returned to the New York stage by playing King George III in “Hamilton: An American Musical,” and he followed that Off-Broadway job with two stints in the role during the show’s Broadway run. He earned another Tony nomination for his performance, and he finally got the award last month for a revival of the Stephen Sondheim-composed “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Simone Biles eyeing strong comeback after 2020 Games

The 2024 Paris Olympics are in full swing. As Day 2 kicks off another exciting day of competition, the women’s gymnastics qualifications begin Sunday, July 28, at Bercy Arena in Paris. NBC and Peacock air all the action airing live.

This year, many eyes will be on 27-year-old legendary American gymnast Simone Biles. Making her third appearance at the Olympics, Biles is the oldest U.S. women’s gymnast to compete at the Games in 72 years, putting her in an elite group of American gymnasts to make three separate Olympic teams.

After taking a two-year hiatus post-Tokyo 2020 due to mental health struggles, Biles made a triumphant return in 2023, quickly re-establishing her dominance by clinching the all-around titles at the U.S. Classic, the U.S. national championships and the world championships, becoming the most decorated gymnast in history.

Leading up to Paris 2024, Biles has only continued to dominate — an incredible performance at the Core Hydration Classic saw her finishing with a world-class all-around score of 117.225 and extending a record nine U.S. Open championship national title victories. But this didn’t come without stiff competition from fellow American gymnasts Shilese Jones and Suni Lee.

With a record 30 world championship medals, including 23 golds and seven Olympic medals, Biles is poised to make history once again, proving to the world why she remains the greatest of all time.

On the case: A teenager searches for answers in ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’

The classic British crime drama takes a young adult turn in the thrilling new series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 1, on Netflix. Starring Emma Myers (“Wednesday”) as 17-year-old sleuth Pip Fitz-Amobi, the six-episode series follows Pip as she reinvestigates the murder-suicide of a popular high school senior and her boyfriend that shocked her hometown of Little Kilton five years previous.

Always fascinated by the case, Pip uses a school project to pick at the seams of the police work that quickly determined that Andie Bell (India Lillie Davies, “Bridgerton”) was killed by her boyfriend, Sal Singh (Rahul Pattni, “Casualty”), who then killed himself after being named a suspect. Something has always told Pip that there was more to the story of their deaths, and her independent research project happens to be the perfect opportunity to explore her hunch.

Pip finds herself entangled in the dark, dangerous side of her small town as she looks into what really happened to Andie and Sal. Poking around in the shadows and talking to people who would much rather be left alone makes the teenage detective a target, and while she makes headway with her project, she puts herself in danger’s crosshairs. Tracing the strings of evidence Pip finds as she investigates reveals a violent drug scene full of secrets and ties to Andie.

Like Holmes and Watson or Cagney and Lacey, great detectives work best in pairs. Pip recruits Sal’s younger brother Ravi (Zain Iqbal, “All Crazy Random,” 2022) to help her get to the bottom of the case and clear his brother’s name. Ravi was the last person to see Sal alive,

This week, Tyler Florence invites All Elite Wrestling tag teams The Acclaimed and The Gunns to take their rivalry beyond the ring, asking them to join the cooks during a stop in Pascagoula, Mississippi, as they prepare to battle it out “food truck” style. and both he and Pip share the belief in his innocence and concern that the real killer is still free, lurking around town. Also starring in “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” are Anna Maxwell Martin (“Good Omens”) as Pip’s mother, Leanne Fitz-Amobi; Gary Beadle (“The Gentlemen”) as Pip’s stepfather, Victor Amobi; Mathew Baynton (“Ghosts”) as teacher Elliot Ward; Henry Ashton (“My Lady Jane”) as Sal’s friend Max Hastings; Carla Woodcock (“Such Brave Girls”) as Andie’s sister, Becca Bell; Yasmin Al-Khudhairi (“Rye Lane,” 2023) as Mr. Ward’s daughter, Naomi Ward; Jude Morgan-Collie (“Here We Go”) as Pip’s friend Connor Reynolds; Raiko Gohara (“Red Rose”) as Pip’s neighbor Zach Chen; Asha Banks (“The Magic Flute,” 2022) as Pip’s best friend, Cara Ward; and Yali Topol Margalith (“The Tattooist of Auschwitz”) as Pip’s friend Lauren Gibson.

The series is adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name by author Holly Jackson. The first in a trilogy of novels, there is room for further seasons of the show, though executive producers Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady (both formerly producers on Netflix’s hit gangster drama series, “Peaky Blinders”) confirmed in an interview with Variety last October that the first season covers the events of the first book and has a real ending. Rest easy, no maddening cliffhangers to be expected here.

Speaking with BBC, Jackson shared what she thought made the novel a hit with so many readers now waiting for the series to drop, saying, “We have lots of teenage angst and antics and those laughout-loud moments ... and then, suddenly, you’re slapped around the face with the dark adult world of a crime thriller.”

This latest edition of ESPN’s premiere docuseries, “30 for 30,” highlights the incredible ascent of American tennis prodigy Michael Chang, who won the 1989 French Open at only 17 years old and took the tennis world by storm despite the obstacles of being a second generation immigrant, born to Taiwanese parents. Directed by New York Times writer Jay Caspian Kang, “American Son” debuts this Monday, July 29, on ESPN. OF THE TERMINATOR

ON

ORION PICTURES

Q: Is Michael Biehn still acting? I can’t picture him outside the ‘80s context.

A: Michael Biehn, despite starring in two iconic films of the era — “The Terminator” (1984) and “Aliens” (1986) — balks at being described as an “’80s star.”

“I was not an ‘80s star,” he said in a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Bruce Willis was an ‘80s star. Tom Cruise was an ‘80s star. Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Mel Gibson. Those guys were making $20 million [a picture]. I never even got $1 million. I kind of liked it that way.”

It’s true that he didn’t parlay that mid-’80s success into superstardom, but he’s maintained a steady career that most would envy. And he does it at his pace.

Most recently, he had small, significant guest spots in such major shows as “The Walking Dead” in 2022 and “The Mandalorian” in 2020. And he’s kept up a steady stream of starring roles in B-grade action movies, some of which he also produces.

To hear Biehn tell it, a higher-profile career at this stage of his life would get in the way of his real job as a family man.

“I don’t see how you can live a normal life where you see your kids all the time, you’re taking them to school and baseball practice and you’re coaching their teams — you’re in their lives,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

With that said, he is involved with a couple of projects that are underway right now. He’s narrating a documentary, called “Six Two Five,” about veterans of the Korean War, and he recently filmed a role in the indie horror film “The Red,” currently in post-production and looking for distribution.
