Elvis Presley’s 1968 comeback special quickly became a legendary piece of television, and Paramount+ looks back at it in the new offering “Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback,” which starts streaming Tuesday, Aug, 15.

Note: This interview took place before the SAG-AF- TRA actors’ strike.

Q: Have you liked being in Nova Scotia making “Moonshine” the past several years?

A: The show is very loved there, and we ended up getting a place there, a little lake house. We want to go back every year and let our kids have these ideal summers, running around barefoot in the grass and swimming in the lake. It has a really wholesome feel that really resonates with us, and it’s great to spend real time there.

Q: How have you enjoyed working with your husband. actor Jonathan Silverman (“Weekend at Bernie’s”), on “Moonshine”?

A: He’s one of the kindest, most generous people on the planet … and if he’s going to do something with me (professionally), I want our characters to be completely at odds with each other. Frankly, there’s nothing more fun than when you’ve been in a long-term rela- tionship with someone and you know them inside and out – and you don’t fight with them much — to go at it with them on camera. I can’t even tell you how cathartic it is.

We see each other all the time, and part of a happy relationship is a healthy boundary. Many people have said to us over the years, “Why don’t you guys do a show together?” Well, it’s because I want us to stay married! One of the reasons The CW wanted this show is that Jonny is such a recognizable American actor, and I think that’s a nice advantage.

Q: How does that work for you yourself, in terms of being well-known in both the U.S. and your native Canada?

A: I think a lot of Canada doesn’t even know I’m Canadian. I think I’ve done nine series at this point, and I’ve been on everyone’s television for 24 years.

Part of my excitement in doing this show initially was to boost my profile in Canada, be- cause I have always been patriotic and proud to be a Canadian, though doing a strictly Canadian show is something I’ve very rarely done. In the way my character Lidia goes back home (in “Moonshine”), this was going back home for me as well.

Braves star Acuña Jr. shines bright this season

Showing no signs of slowing down, Ronald Acuña Jr. has certainly kept his name in the running for the 2023 National League’s Most Valuable Player race all season long. His quest for an all-time MLB season continues when the red-hot Atlanta Braves roll out the welcome mat for the New York Yankees, with the first of their three-game series airing Monday, Aug. 14, on YES Network.

Born in La Guaira, Venezuela, Acuña Jr. came to the Braves as a highly regarded prospect — not only within the Braves organization but throughout the league. Expectations were high ahead of the young outfielder’s pro debut in 2015 as a 17-year-old, and after rising through four minor-league levels before making his MLB debut in 2018, the top prospect quickly showed fans (and opponents) that he had the makings of a generational superstar.

In his first official MLB season, Acuña Jr. finished with a batting average of .293 with 127 hits. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Acuña Jr. added 64 RBIs and 26 home runs on his way to earning the 2018 NL Rookie of the Year award.

Now at the age of 25, the Venezuelan is already a three-time all-star, and he was the first player in MLB history to have posted 20 home runs, 40 stolen bases and 50 RBIs heading into the All-Star break. Since then, Acuña Jr. has maintained an elite batting average hovering around the .330 mark and reigns as the National League’s stolen-base leader, proving that no matter what he does at the plate, he is consistently a threat.

Facing the New York Yankees at Truist Park in Atlanta, look for Acuña Jr. and the Braves to come out swinging against an opposing team that has been slowed by injuries this season.

Rocking reflections: Paramount+ revisits Elvis Presley’s 1968 comeback special

Elvis Presley’s legendary 1968 television special was a turning point not only for him, but for many of the other people involved in it.

One was producer-director Steve Binder, who candidly told the “King” of music that the latter’s career was “in the toilet,” so he needed to do the NBC-televised hour. The result quickly became a legendary piece of television, and Paramount+ looks back at it in the new offering “Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback,” which starts streaming Tuesday, Aug, 15 — the night before the 46th anniversary of Presley’s death, and following the project’s limited showings in movie theaters globally. While incorporating many segments from the original show, “Reinventing Elvis” examines Presley’s relationship not only with Binder (who narrates the bulk of the film), but also with Col. Tom Parker, the famously strict manager who kept tight control over Presley. Singers Darius Rucker and Drake Milligan are among those who offer comments, along with journalist Alanna Nash and Anita Mann, who was a dancer on the 1968 special. Also an executive producer of “Reinventing Elvis,” Binder maintains that he’s “real pleased with what they did” creatively with the documentary, though he admits he was skeptical at first. “When I was approached to get involved, I said, ‘There are so many third-party stories about Elvis, why do we need another one?’ Then they pitched me their idea, and it really covered 1968 as a whole. I was rooting for them from the sidelines, and I certainly was responsive to any of their requests for more material.”

Music-documentary veteran John Scheinfeld — who also has done projects

on John Lennon, John Coltrane, Herb Alpert and Harry Nilsson — directed “Reinventing Elvis,” which also has music-industry legend Spencer Proffer, a longtime Binder associate, as the executive producer who conceived it. “There are so few of us alive today who were there when it all happened,” Binder reflects of the 1968 Elvis show. “There have been specials and books about it, but I never felt that anybody who was there told the real story.

“I was there from the beginning to the end, and it’s so gratifying today to realize what the public response to it was. A number of years ago, somebody approached me and said, ‘Steve, you realize that no matter what you did in the past or do from here on in, you’ll be remembered mostly for the Elvis comeback special’ … and I think they told the truth.”

The entirety of “Reinventing Elvis” serves as a reminder of how major a star Presley was in his time. “We’re so lucky that we partnered with Paramount+,” Binder notes, “because many of Elvis’ movies were done at Paramount, so we were given access to their library and were able to include clips from his films. That was just a stroke of luck, and it sure adds to this. None of the other projects that have been done about the 1968 special were able to clear those rights, I guess.”

For Binder, “Reinventing Elvis” has a personal significance that goes beyond his literally having called the shots on the classic special. “I have nine grandkids and a great-grandchild,” he reports, “and the fact that they’re able to relive this with me now while I’m here is such a bonus and such a pleasure. And it just looks so fresh, even to me, which is very rare when you look back at an old show.”

Armando Iannucci ON HBO OF VEEP

Q: What has Armando Iannucci been doing since “Veep” ended?

A: Actually quite a lot. He had a whole HBO sitcom, “Avenue 5,” come and go since 2019, when his beloved, award-winning political comedy “Veep” ended.

If you didn’t know that, it’s likely because “Avenue 5,” a sci-fi comedy about a space cruise ship that gets stuck far from Earth, never really found an audience.

Its first-season ratings, in early 2020, were poor, and then the pandemic happened, which meant the second season didn’t air for another two and a half years. By then, any momentum it had was lost, as reflected in the even lower Season 2 numbers.

Sadly, it seems like maybe that experience has soured Iannucci on TV for a while. He’s currently focused on the stage, namely a live-theatre adaptation of the classic film “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964). Even worse for TV fans: It’s being staged across an ocean in Iannucci’s native Britain.

“Dr. Strangelove” offered a cutting satire of government war-making when it was released in the midst of the Cold War, but Iannucci told the BBC that its message is just as relevant today.

As for why he chose the stage instead of the screen, the ever-topical Iannucci said it was also about timing and current affairs. “In the last three years, we’ve been so enclosed in our homes because of the lockdown, and have got addicted to our screens, so actually going out and seeing something live and in the flesh is all the more exciting. That’s what excites me about actually doing it as a live stage show.”
