Q: It’s interesting to see Don Johnson coming back to series TV in “Doctor Odyssey.” What was the last series he had?
A: Bankable on the home screen ever since his trendsetting 1980s role as Detective James “Sonny” Crockett in NBC’s “Miami Vice,” Don Johnson has had several shows since … the most recent one before his new ABC and Hulu program, “Doctor Odyssey,” been in the NBC sitcom “Kenan,” where he played a recurring role as Rick, the former father-in-law of the show’s titular star (Kenan Thompson).
To go back to his earlier shows, Johnson had the lead in a syndicated 1979 miniseries version of the John Jakes historical novel “The Rebels,” then he co-starred in NBC’s 1980 series adaptation of “From Here to Eternity” based on the James Jones book that also inspired an Oscar-winning 1953 movie. After that, Johnson returned to NBC in “Miami Vice,” which changed the course of his career with the enormous success it had over its 1984-89 tenure.
In the immediate aftermath of that trendy police drama, Johnson focused on feature-film work, but he was back on television in the title role of “Nash Bridges” on CBS from 1996 to 2001, where he played the title part of a San Francisco police detective (and he reprised the role in a 2021 movie for USA Network). In The WB’s “Just Legal” – the last show that network aired before it morphed into The CW – Johnson portrayed a veteran, struggling lawyer. He returned in 2010 and 2012 in the middle two of the four seasons of HBO’s sports comedy “Eastbound & Down.”

The NFL season is in full swing as fans get excited for another week of football action with the Tennessee Titans gearing up to take on the Miami Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Monday, Sept. 3, with all the action airing live on ESPN.
Week 4 is here and the Miami Dolphins are looking to continue building off an incredible season of milestones, despite coming up short in an AFC Wild Card game for the fifth time in franchise history.
However, since the acquisition of superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill in 2022, the Miami Dolphins have been a team on the come up, reaching a record of 11-6 in 2023 with the hopes of improving that record and making a deeper playoff run.
Hill’s role will be crucial to their success this season, after an outstanding 2023 season, in which Hill racked up 1799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, leading the entire NFL in both categories. This season, the Georgia native has yet again set the ambitious goal of reaching 2,000 receiving yards, something that has never been achieved by a wide receiver in the NFL.
Meanwhile, for visiting opponents Tennessee Titans, they enter the 2024 season with a fresh sense of optimism after a lengthy search for a head coach in the offseason, appointing Brian Callahan as the new Titans head coach. Looking to help turn the team around after going 6-11 last season will be Titans quarterback Will Levis who in the last matchup against the Dolphins fared quite well, throwing for 327 yards, 23 completions and one touchdown.

To say that “Found” is changing its game in its second season is to risk understatement, and even that is putting it mildly.
The drama series returns Thursday, Oct, 3, to NBC, with an enormous shift in its premise. Sir (played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, “NYPD Blue”), the kidnapping victim of recovery specialist Gabi Mosely (Shanola Hampton, “Shameless) — who was abducted and held captive by him years earlier — has escaped from the basement prison she held him in, prompting her to reveal her formerly secret actions to her crisis-management team. They’re still processing the information as the new episodes begin, with Sir still missing, though circumstances suggest he’s not done invading Gabi’s life. Her colleague Lacey (Gabrielle Walsh, “9-1-1”), also a former victim of Sir, is a particular target as well.
Also starring Kelli Williams (“The Practice”), Brett Dalton (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Arlen Escarpeta (“The Oath”) and Karan Oberoi (“Roswell,” New Mexico”), “Found” is adding Michael Cassidy (“Resident Alien”), Danielle Savre (“Station 19”) and Dionne Gipson (“NCIS”) to its cast for Season 2. The prolific Greg Berlanti (mentor of The CW’s former “Arrowverse” collection of DC Comics-inspired adventure series) is among the executive producers of “Found,” as is its creator, Nkechi Okoro Carroll (“All American”).
“It is what I like to call a ‘character-cedural,’” Carroll says of the show, “so we’re still going to have a case of the week. We’re still going to have that engine of reaching a point of completion with our cases every week, but it’s got a significant serialized portion. Sir’s
out on the loose wreaking havoc. Mark-Paul [Gosselaar] is having way too much fun doing that, so that will definitely maintain as part of the show, but we will still have that satisfying puzzle that we want the audience to join us in solving every week.”
A veteran of many series, from “Saved by the Bell” to “NYPD Blue,” Gosselaar reasons that especially with the second-year changes, “Found” is “this dance that you have to trust [Carroll] and her team to provide us the floor to be creative on but also to feel that it’s not forced. With every script that we got, I remember I kept calling [her and] saying, ‘How can we continue this trajectory?’ I’m very, very, very pleased and very excited for our fans and our audience to watch the second season because, for everything that we built up in the first season, there is going to be a payoff if you’ve put the time into our show.”
“Found” star Hampton earned a Gracie Award for Season 1, and she notes, “We don’t wrap things up with a little bow in one or two episodes. The healing process, as in life, takes time … so Gabi Mosely is in this dark place, having to deal with the dynamics shifting with the entire team. That’s the beautiful journey of this season, which I’m really excited for the audience to see and to experience going through the process with these characters.
“It’s been a different journey for me as an actor to play because Gabi is always in control and people are looking up to her. In this season, for the majority of the first chapter, everyone’s really [mad] at her and disappointed and sad. It weighs on you.”

OF 1883 ON PARAMOUNT+
Q: Is Sam Elliott still working? Why haven’t I seen him in a while?
A: If the tall, wiry, cowboy archetype Sam Elliott (“The Ranch”) had an ordinary, pensioned career, he would have retired more than a decade ago. But nothing about Elliott’s career has been ordinary — even for Hollywood.
He recently turned 80, and he’s been working pretty steadily since the late ‘60s and his first credited film role, in the classic Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969).
You’re right that his pace has slowed a little in recent years, but that just means he can be a little choosier in the roles he takes. It also means stretching his wings a little from time to time. For example, his next role won’t be a western at all, but a big-budget fantasy story.
He’ll be voicing the dragon in “Grendel,” the (mostly) live-action retelling of the ancient “Beowulf” legend.
It just recently went into production, though, so don’t expect to see it in theaters any time soon.
You’re right that, besides that, he’s been keeping a pretty low profile lately. His last role was a lead in the 2021 miniseries “1883,” a prequel to the smash hit “Yellowstone.”
That might not seem that long ago, but for Elliott it’s an age — he’s kept up an incredibly busy schedule since his career took off in the late 1980s (another reason he’s atypical in Hollywood — he didn’t even really get famous until he was well into his 40s).
