Q: How long has Wayne Brady been hosting “Let’s Make a Deal”?

A: Ever since CBS’ current daytime version began in 2009. Its premiere there made it a rare series to run on three different broadcast networks, since the original show – hosted by Monty Hall, also (along with business partner Stefan Hatos) a creator and producer of it – ran on NBC from 1963 to 1966, then moved to ABC, where it continued until 1976. There also were other editions before the Brady-hosted revival premiered, with NBC attempting it again twice, in daytime with Bob Hilton and (very briefly) in prime time with Bush.

Brady has earned two of his five Emmy Awards for his work on “Let’s Make a Deal,” and by the time he started that job, the idea of comedians becoming game-show hosts had been accepted. Among examples, Drew Carey assumed the hosting spot on “The Price Is Right” in 2007, and Louie Anderson had guided “Family Feud” from 1999 to 2002 (Steve Harvey started in the latter show in 2010).

In interviews, Brady has maintained that he never wanted to be just one thing in the entertainment world … not exclusively an actor nor a comic (a skill he has displayed plentifully on the improvisation-oriented “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”) nor a singer (he was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for his cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”). He also has appeared on Broadway in “Chicago,” “Freestyle Love Supreme” and “Kinky Boots.” Along with “The Price Is Right,” extra episodes of “Let’s Make a Deal” have been made expressly for CBS’ prime time lineup. That will continue for both shows during the upcoming television season, when they are slated to be seen on Friday nights starting in November.

Crouch, bind, set: Finn Russell and team Scotland take on the IRFU

The Rugby World Cup continues this week as Celtic rivals Ireland and Scotland get set to face off at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris, Saturday, Oct. 7, in what will be their final group stage match of the tournament. The match will be broadcast live on NBC. Historically, Ireland and Scotland have played each other twice in previous Rugby World Cup tournaments, with Scotland coming out victorious 24-15 in Edinburgh, Scotland (1991), and Ireland walking away with a 27-3 win in Yokohama, Japan (2019).

Following a frustrating World Cup opening performance against South Africa in Marseille this year — South Africa posted a modest 18-3 victory over Scotland — Scotland’s superstar fly-half Finn Russell remains optimistic, telling reporters he believes his squad still has what it takes, despite not getting the start they’d hoped for.

“As frustrated as we are, there is a lot to work on and still everything to play for,” Russell said.

There is no doubt that the loss to South Africa leaves Scotland and Russell with no room for error, specifically against a strong Irish squad — ranked first in the world at press time. Ireland has come out of the gates swinging in Pool B, first taking down Romania, 82-8, before beating Tonga, 59-16, in their first couple of matches of the tournament.

Now, Scotland and Russell will need to put up the fight of a lifetime against one of the top-ranked sides in rugby.

The doctor is in again: Kelsey Grammer returns as ‘Frasier’

There’s been room for “Frasier” ever since the original series ended, so there’s certainly space for a revival. After winning four of his five Primetime Emmys for playing the title part, Kelsey Grammer returns as the high-minded psychiatrist in a new Paramount+ version of “Frasier” that starts streaming Thursday, Oct. 12 (CBS will give the revival’s first two episodes a broadcast run Oct. 17.). Originated by the actor as a supporting character on “Cheers,” Dr. Frasier Crane returns to that show’s Boston setting, with an outline of that city replacing that of his hometown of Seattle (where the first “Frasier” took place) in the opening credits. Also mostly new is the supporting cast, which was the case when Grammer initially transferred “Frasier” into his own show. Such figures as Frasier’s brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce (“Julia”), who chose not to return, and his father Martin, played by John Mahoney, (“Moonstruck,” 1987) who died in 2018, are now absent, as are Martin’s caretaker and Niles’ eventual wife, Daphne (Jane Leeves, “The Resident”), and Martin’s frequent-Frasier-nemesis dog, Eddie. However, Peri Gilpin (“Scorpion”) and Bebe Neuwirth (“Julia”) — alias, respectively, Frasier’s radio show producer Roz and his ex-wife Lilith — will be back on a recurring basis.

Among actors joining “Frasier” for the first time are Jack Cutmore-Scott (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) as Frasier’s son, Freddy, and new actor Anders Keith as David, the son of Niles and Daphne (born in the finale of the original “Frasier”). Nicholas Lyndhurst (“Only

Fools and Horses”) is also a regular cast member as a college pal of Frasier’s who is a professor now. Among the aspects retaining familiarity, though, will be a new rendering of the theme song (“Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs”) recorded by Grammer, who also remains an executive producer. The first “Frasier” continues to be seen regularly in repeats, and having yielded more than 250 episodes over 11 seasons, its successor has a long and celebrated legacy to live up to – encompassing its Primetime Emmy wins for outstanding comedy series for five consecutive years (1994-98). Much as the first show was, the new one is an exploration of Dr. Crane starting over. When last seen, he was headed for Chicago, presumably for him to be together with the girlfriend he had at the time (played by guest star Laura Linney, “Ozark”). That became his destination after he let go of a San Francisco television job he had gotten.

Putting Frasier back in Boston is bound to give interesting twists to the premise in which viewers first got to know him. At least on a steady basis, he’ll be without Sam Malone (Ted Danson, “The Good Place”), Diane Chambers (Shelley Long, “Modern Family”) and the others he commiserated with regularly at the bar “where everybody knows your name.” Much as he did upon his move to Seattle, he’ll be surrounded by a fresh group that the new “Frasier’s” makers clearly hope will catch on with viewers in the same way Niles and others did.

Q: I just watched “Empire Records” again, and I’m wondering what happened to the actress who played Debra. The other girls went on to big stardom — did she?

A: It was a dice roll in 1995 to see which of the young female leads of that year’s teen hit, “Empire Records,” would become the bigger star.

Liv Tyler (who played the goodie-goodie, Corey, in this film that traded in those sorts of easy teen movie tropes) went on to star in the critically well-regarded art film “Stealing Beauty” (1996) next. Meanwhile, Renee Zellwegger (Gina) made a huge box office splash the next year in “Jerry McGuire.” Robin Tunney, who played the emotionally troubled Debra in “Empire Records,” took a different path — but one that seemed just as likely to lead to greater stardom. Her next role was another teen film, the era-defining “The Craft” (1996).

However, while Zellwegger and Tyler went on to even bigger roles and fame, Tunney’s momentum seemed to fizzle. These days, she’s mostly known as a TV supporting star.

Most notably, she had one of the lead roles on CBS’s procedural drama “The Mentalist,” playing a police officer (and the titular “mentalist’s” romantic interest) on all seven seasons of the show.

Prior to that, she starred in the surprise-hit first season of Fox’s “Prison Break” in 2005 and 2006. And most recently, earlier this year she appeared in a long arc on the Apple TV+ series “Dear Edward.”
