Q: Seeing Sophia Bush on “Grey’s Anatomy” made me think of the medical series she had after she left “Chicago P.D.” What was it called, and when was it on?
A: Star Sophia Bush had a big creative hand in “Good Sam,” which had a relatively brief run on CBS from January to May in 2022. She also was a producer of the drama in which she played a heart surgeon who got a big promotion at her hospital when her predecessor — her father, played by Jason Isaacs — was rendered comatose by a shooting. He then recovered and wanted to resume work, making her his boss, something neither was comfortable with.
Wendy Crewson (“Saving Hope”) played Bush’s mother and Isaacs’ ex-wife, who was also on the hospital’s staff, often acting as mediator between her arguing relatives. Another notable cast member was Skye P. Marshall, cast as another doctor who was having an affair with Isaacs’ character; she’s currently back on CBS as Olympia Lawrence in the update of “Matlock,” which is being filmed on the same soundstages at Hollywood’s Paramount Studios that were used for “Good Sam.” Earlier this year, Marshall married fellow actor Edwin Hodge, who also was a “Good Sam” cast regular.
As she continues her recurring role in ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” Bush may be returning to one of her earlier series characters. She, Hilarie Burton Morgan and Danneel Ackles are among the “One Tree Hill” veterans involved in developing a proposed sequel series to that show. Discussions about doing that project haven’t been hurt by the popularity of the “Drama Queens” podcast that Bush hosts with Morgan and fellow “One Tree Hill” alum Bethany Joy Lenz.

It’s another thrilling NHL regular-season marquee matchup as the Washington Capitals visit the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday, Dec. 28, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, with the game being broadcast live on MNMT.
The Leafs are off to a sizzling start this season boasting a 136-2 record as they currently lead the highly competitive Atlantic Division (at time of writing). Additionally, a coaching change and several key acquisitions, particularly on the defensive end, have propelled the Leafs to be one of the most disciplined teams in the NHL this season, averaging just 2.48 goals against per game.
With captain Auston Matthews having been out of the lineup for an extended period, William Nylander has undoubtedly picked up the slack on offense, enjoying a career-best start to a season with 14 goals and 10 assists in what also happens to be the final year of his contract.
For the visiting Capitals, captain Alexander Ovechkin is off to his hottest start in recent memory, putting up 15 goals in 25 games and positioning the Capitals as a top-3 team in the Metropolitan Division. However, since breaking his leg against the Utah Hockey Club in November, it’s a given that some of that offensive production will be harder to come by with the team now leaning on players such as Connor McMichael, who sits right behind Ovechkin in goals with 13.
You won’t want to miss this fast-paced and highly competitive matchup, as the Maple Leafs look to maintain their stronghold in their division while the Capitals hope their offensive momentum can carry them against Toronto’s defense.

As the holidays approach, the residents and midwives of Nonnatus House begin the preparations for their favorite festive traditions. With a bad bout of influenza spreading around town and an escaped prisoner both causing tension in the convent, it seems harder than ever to muster up that Christmas cheer. A “Call the Midwife” holiday special airs in two parts, this Wednesday, Dec. 25, on PBS. Revisit the series’ past Christmas specials online at pbs.org/call-the-midwife/ episodes/2024-holiday-special
It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many — a time to shirk all that has been keeping you busy during the day-to-day and instead wake up to a home drenched in twinkly lights and take a deep, Proustian whiff of baking cookies while curling up in a cozy armchair with a hot cup of cocoa.
And whether you are wholeheartedly prepared to submit to the comfort of the season — or if you lead a more active, stressful lifestyle — cable television has all the classics lined up to make you feel like a kid again this Christmas Eve.
Beginning with the modern holiday fairytale “Elf” (2003) on AMC, be sure to pop over to ABC later in the day for the 1990 Christmas classic “Home Alone.” Later, learn how angels get their wings with “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) on NBC, or try your hand at some trivia and games when “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and “The Price is Right at Night: Holiday Heroes” air on ABC and CBS, respectively.
Kick-start your holiday viewing on Tuesday, Dec. 24, by “pass[ing] through the seven levels of the candy cane forest, through the sea of swirly-twirly gum drops” and over to AMC for director Jon Favreau’s (“Chef,” 2014) family-favorite film “Elf.”
“Elf” stars “Saturday Night Live” alum Will Ferrell as the titular elf, Buddy, who grew up at the North Pole as one of Santa’s (Edward Asner, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) elves. When Buddy learns he is actually a human adopted into an elf family, he sets out to learn about his past, leading him to his father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan, “Misery,” 1990), in New York City. Q: I finally found “A Smoky Mountain Christmas,” with Dolly Parton, and I can’t figure out where I know the judge from. It’s a smaller part towards the end, but there’s no credit for him. Can you help me put a name to the face?
A: His name might have leapt to your mind more easily if you were watching “A Smoky Mountain Christmas” when it first aired back in 1986: the actor doing an uncredited cameo as the judge was ‘80s sitcom icon John Ritter.
Best known as chef and would-be ladies’ man Jack Tripper in “Three’s Company” from 1976 to 1984, Ritter actually had a long and prolific career that reaches all the way back to the late ‘60s.
But, when he did a pop-in for Dolly Parton’s now-legendary (though, as you say, often hard-to-find) Christmas special in 1986, he was both riding high on his “Three’s Company” success and also struggling to repeat it.
“Three’s Company” ended in 1984, and Ritter immediately launched a spinoff, “Three’s a Crowd,” which only lasted a season. A year after “Smoky Mountain Christmas,” in 1987, he launched a new sitcom, “Hooperman,” in which he played a San Francisco cop who also owns a run-down apartment building. That one only lasted two seasons. Indeed, it took nearly 15 years before he had his next bona fide sitcom hit with “8 Simple Rules,” starring as family patriarch Paul Hennessy.
Ritter was far from the only famous person to climb Smoky Mountain for an appearance. “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” fans would recognize Rene Auberjonois (who played the security officer, Odo, on the sci-fi hit) as Parton’s manager, Ned. And, of course, the very descriptively named character Mountain Dan was played by none other than “The Six Million Dollar Man” star Lee Majors.
