cardiovascular workouts. Running on a treadmill, using an elliptical machine and/or swimming are great activities that make it easy for student athletes to keep their bodies in shape as their muscles and joints recover from the season.

• Emphasize the rules of the game. The rules of the game aren’t in place solely to en courage fair play. Rules also are designed to keep athletes safe. For example, student ath letes who play contact sports, including football and soccer, should be taught proper ways to tackle so they can avoid injuring themselves and others. Coaches can reinforce these lessons during practices and even games if the need arises.

Performance pointers that can help student athletes avoid injury

• Prioritize offseason conditioning. Rest and recovery is vital for any athlete, but espe cially student athletes whose bodies are still growing and changing. Offseasons have largely fallen by the wayside, but parents can protect their

Professional sports teams often note that injuries are part of the game. That notion is never too far from profes sional athletes’ minds, but it can be a harsh reality for student athletes to confront, especially if they have never before been sidelined by in jury. Though there’s no fool proof way for athletes to avoid injury, student athletes and their families can consider these preventive measures to reduce their risk of being side lined.

• Make a good night’s rest part of athletes’ routine. A good night’s rest is vital for student athletes, as it ensures they aren’t playing tired. Tired athletes have slower reaction times and that can increase in jury risk. Adequate sleep also benefits athletes’ performance. A 2015 study published in the journal Physiology & Behav

ior found that athletes who increased their nightly sleep from seven to nine hours expe rienced significantly improved performance after doing so.

• Use diet to athletes’ advan tage. A healthy diet benefits people from all walks of life, and it can be especially bene ficial for student athletes. Pre cisely what defines a healthy diet depends on variables specific to the athletes, such as age and gender, but Nemours Childrens Health notes that balance is vital for teenage ath letes. Avoid cutting back on carbohydrates, which provide fuel for young athletes. When choosing carbs, opt for fruits, vegetables and whole grains instead of sugar-laden options like candy bars. The latter can provide a quick energy burst but then cause an energy crash that makes athletes feel fatigued. In-game fatigue can increase risk of injury. In addi tion, calcium and iron can be vital to young athletes looking to avoid injury. Calcium helps strengthen bones while iron carries much-needed oxygen to athletes’ muscles. Protein is important for athletes, but Ne mours notes that most teenage athletes who eat healthy diets already get ample protein. As a result, protein powders and shakes are not necessary for teenage muscle growth.

What to do about wellness after 50

• Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors con tribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. That’s a sig nificant benefit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Pre vention reports that one out of every three adults age 65

• Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, includ ing individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from research ers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or be come more independent. In dividuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible.

Various strategies can help people maintain mental and physical wellness as they make their way through their 50s and beyond. LP227099

• Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phe nomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sad ness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no chil

who learned new skills expe rienced greater memory im provement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging.

Reaching one’s fiftieth birth day in optimal health is an ac complishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes ad hering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once in dividuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strate gies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for de cades to come.

• Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is im proved by engagement in de manding everyday tasks. That study reported that people

dren at home overcome feel ings linked to empty nest syndrome. In 2018, the Uni versity of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 86 percent of pet owners felt their pets make them feel loved while 73 percent said their pets provided a sense of purpose. Pets also can en sure individuals over 50 stay physically active and provide opportunities to connect with other people.
