(BPT) - As you’ve likely stayed indoors more over the past couple of years, you may have realized there are things about your home that need to be changed or upgraded. Rising heating costs may also have you concerned about the upcoming chilly winter months. With cold temps already here, it’s important to be sure your home is ready - and that your family will stay sufficiently warm and comfortable throughout the coldest time of the year.

without having to heat the whole house or cool your home gym to 68 degrees while leaving the nursery at 75 degrees. An HVAC system with inverter technology is also quieter, more cost-saving and more energy efficient than a typical HVAC system. When upgrading, choose ENERGY STAR ® certified appliances or systems. ENERGY STAR® certified systems, such as LG’s systems with inverter technology, can trim up to 30% off your energy bill, and with many states also offering rebates for ENERGY STAR® systems and appliances, you can add even more cost savings. 4. PROTECT OUTDOOR HVAC UNITS Make sure the components of your HVAC system that are outdoors are well protected from the elements. For example, having a roof over the unit, protective fencing and/ or raising the unit to keep it above the snow line are some easy ways you can help your system continue to work well.
5. INVEST IN A SMART THERMOSTAT If you don’t already have one, consider installing a smart thermostat to help you better regulate temps in your home to keep everyone com-
fortable, while also lowering energy costs. A good smart thermostat can learn your home’s patterns and adjust to your family’s needs, which means, for example, that you won’t be overheating your
home when nobody is there. With these tips in mind, you can help ensure that your home will be cozy, comfy and warm, all winter long.

How to choose the best refrigerator for you
(BPT) - Whether you’re remodeling your kitchen, replacing a broken unit or upgrading your full appliance suite, looking for a new refrigerator can feel overwhelming with all the options available - but it doesn’t have to be! Check out this list of tips and tricks to help you keep your cool as you navigate your shopping experience - from design and finish to features and capacity, you’ll have everything you need to find the right refrigerator for you. MEASURE UP: MAKING SURE IT FITS YOUR KITCHEN. When measuring for a refrigerator, make sure to measure the cutout size, and not just the size of your old refrigerator. Pay attention to height, depth and surrounding spaces in your kitchen. Size options include counter depth, which lines up with your countertops, and standard depth, which offers more capacity and extends past your countertops. When thinking about fridge type, there are two options to consider: freestanding refrigerators simply slide into your
kitchen cutout for ease and convenience, whereas built-in refrigerators are installed completely flush with your cabinetry. OPEN THE DOOR TO A BETTER KITCHEN: CHOOSING A TYPE. Determine the type of refrigerator that works best for your kitchen space, including door configuration. You can choose French door bottom mount (double fridge doors on top, freezer on bottom), Side by Side (fridge on the right and freezer on the left), Bottom Freezer (single fridge door on top, freezer on bottom), among others. If you have a narrow kitchen, choose a refrigerator type and size that allows the refrigerator and freezer doors to open all the way. Capacity pro tip: Some fridge models are more suitable for certain household sizes. French door refrigerators are optimal for larger household sizes, as they offer greater capacity, while a small 24-inch fridge with a bottom freezer might be better for smaller households.

CHEERS TO YOU: ASSESS YOUR BEVERAGE NEEDS. Choosing a refrigerator that keeps your beverages at the right temperature is key, from a fast, reliable ice dispenser to specialty beverage storage within the fridge. With the Bosch QuickIcePro System, you can avoid frequent runs to the grocery store to keep your drinks ice-cold. Or, with the Refreshment Center, there’s nothing to “wine” about - it’s like a wine cellar for your refrigerator, storing bottles at the optimal temperature and humidity.
YOUR SAVING GRACE: CHOOSE ENERGY-SAVING APPLIANCES. Sustainability is key to a forever home. Be on the lookout for appliances that are energy efficient, saving both the environment and your wallet. Since your fridge will be running 24/7, select a model that is ENERGY STAR® certified. Some ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerators feature high-efficiency compressors, generating less heat/energy, and an Eco Mode, which automatically adjusts temperatures in the appliance.
AMERICA’S NEXT TOP (FRIDGE) MODEL: CHOOSE A DESIGN THAT FITS YOUR STYLE. From timeless stainless steel to bold black stainless steel, choose the finish that makes the right statement in your kitchen. Stainless steel offers a classic/traditional feel; black stainless steel is stylish and functional; custom panel ready refrigerators install fully flush for clean lines and a uniform style. Some refrigerators are even finished with premium glass over brushed stainless steel - a great option for a sleeker look.
BACK TO THE BASICS: KEEPING IT FRESH. Consider how your refrigerator can help you keep food cold and fresh while limiting food waste. First, think about your typical trip to the grocery store. What perishables do you usually buy, or want to buy? The items in your bag may influence the interior layout and shelving options you’ll want in a fridge - be sure to choose one with greater storage flexibility.
is best for fruit and vegetable lovers. The FarmFresh System from Bosch keeps produce fresher, longer, by automatically adjusting the humidity and temperature based on the For example, a large, food setting selected. Wide “smart” storage compartment gallon door bins are best for
families that buy multiple milk jugs. A colder chiller drawer is the perfect spot for meat and fish. For smaller items and hard-to-place, tall bottles, opt for a fridge that offers adjustable shelving to maximize space.

3 emerging design trends for today’s lifestyles (BPT) - Events from the past year have all of us reconsidering what we want and need out of our homes. From work and play to wellness, our homes have become the epicenter of, well, everything - leading to an emergence of design trends focused on adapting to a new normal. The design experts at Wilsonart, a world-leading provider of engineered surfaces, have identified three new lifestyle trends that are affecting lasting design changes. BACK TO NATURE It’s no secret that nature 1. has the power to inspire, in-
vigorate, restore and refresh. Research has shown that interacting with nature can offer mental health benefits, including decreasing stress and relieving anxiety. Likewise, incorporating elements of nature into the home has been proven to improve happiness and well-being. Whether as a room’s canvas or a pop of color on an accent wall, paint is an easy and affordable way to bring nature’s beauty into the home with colors that evoke a sense of calm and serenity. “Dark blue hues reminiscent of water and the sky are trending, along with lush greens that infuse spaces
with the fresh essence of grass and foliage,” says designer Gwen Petter. “Earthy neutrals, such as tans and beiges, are also in high demand for their ability to ground us and surround us with soothing natural tones.”

homes need to perform on a level they may never have before, and this includes incorporating materials that work as hard as we do. “Today’s homeowners are seeking surfaces that will live up to the rigors of everyday life,” explains Petter. “There also is growing interest in sustainable alternatives to natural products, which can contribute to deforestation and degraded air quality from sourcing and mining operations. Human-made composite materials offer appealing options that often outperform natural materials, delivering greater durability, less ongoing maintenance and fewer harmful environmental impacts.” Alternative materials like laminate, solid surface and quartz mimic the best of Mother Nature without im-

Creative ways to transform your kitchen
(BPT) - The kitchen is famously the go-to room of the house where family and friends gather to spend time together, so it should be a space that you enjoy hanging out in. If your kitchen’s décor is starting to look a little tired, you can always freshen things up by adding modern and functional touches. Here are five ideas from simple to complex - that can transform your kitchen from tired to top-notch.
warmth and durability of wood to add timeless style to your kitchen,” says Jennifer Meska, design expert at LL Flooring. “Classic styles like American Walnut are one of the most highly sought-after domestic hardwood choices.”
COLOR YOUR WORLD Adding color doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. For instance, small appliances are to kitchens what throw pillows are to couches. Look for small, countertop kitchen appliances with a color you love and put them on display. Get creative with colorful art. Dress up your floors with a colorful runner. Paint something - an accent wall, a nook, woodwork, or if you’re an experienced DIY-er, cabinets. You hold the palette, so go ahead and make your statement.
MAKE A COZY, INTIMATE SEATING AREA Because people tend to congregate in the kitchen, invite them to stay awhile by installing a modern seating area. Get creative with counter seating, or carve out a cozy nook in a corner. Banquet seating or a bench at a window-side table can give your kitchen an inviting atmosphere. Our lives are busy, and kitchen seating is a multitasking hero. Seating that’s both comfortable and functional allows you to spend time with children as they study, or socialize with guests while cooking a meal.
WARM UP YOUR COUNTERTOPS If you want to add a bit of natural warmth to your kitchen, consider butcher block countertops from LL Flooring, which offers an array of beautiful options.
Adding to the benefits of butcher block, the close grain of the wood provides a smooth, scratch-resistant surface that’s easy to clean.
SHED A NEW LIGHT ON IT Updating your light fixtures can make a night-andday difference in the mood of your kitchen. The easiest to install is pendant lighting that you plug into the wall. “There is nothing like the Hang a hook from the ceil-
ing and swoop the cord over it and voila, you’ve got modern lighting. When in doubt, recessed lighting is always on trend. Installing it with a dimmer switch may require professional installation, but the end result is worth it. Need a quicker fix? Make a statement by replacing outdated fixtures with decorative track lighting, a lightbar over the kitchen island or an artistic chandelier. PUT A SPOTLIGHT ON YOUR KITCHEN FLOOR Fresh flooring can greatly revitalize your kitchen, instantly sprucing up any dull décor with a timeless product that is resilient, waterproof, durable and attractive.
LL Flooring offers hundreds of waterproof styles to choose from, including the new CoreLuxe Americana collection, a line of extra-durable vinyl flooring in natural wood hues that are sure to enhance your décor. “Each of the Americana floors brings the natural colors and hues of the great American outdoors into your home with on-trend design and do-anything performance,” says Meska. Breathing new life into your kitchen can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Start small and go big, or start big and accent with small touches of color. Make it yours, and make it inviting.
