MENDOTA 2023 Community Review

A closer look at the people, places and businesses that make the Mendota area a great place to live!

Sullivan’s Foods

Over the decades, Mendota’s hometown grocery store has seen its share of names and rebranding – Classon’s, Thompson Food Basket, and, most recently, Sullivan’s Foods. Regardless of the name on the building, the foundation of the store has always been the same: serving the community. “We’re proud to service the town and surrounding areas,” said Dylan Inman, Sullivan’s Foods Store Director. “We strive to meet the needs of our guests every day and support our community in a way to help drive it forward.” Since arriving in 2000, Sullivan’s Foods has been an essential staple in the community. The grocery store donates to the local food pantry multiple times a week and, in collaboration with Shaw Media, hosts an annual large-scale food drive. In addition, Sullivan’s Foods has

created strategic partnerships with local organizations including the Lions Club, Mendota Area Senior Services, the police and fire departments, and more to better support these groups who strengthen the community. This spring, it was announced that the Mendota store, and all 11 Sullivan’s Foods locations, will change ownership again. The store was acquired by Saint Cloud, MN-based Coborn’s, Inc., an employee-owned grocery retailer with locations across the Midwest. The name, Sullivan’s Foods, will remain

the same and so will the store’s community foundation. Coborn’s has a strong and long tradition of community giving dating back to the first store in Sauk Rapids, MN. Over 100 years later, the company is still driven by the desire to support the communities who continue to support them. Each year, Coborn’s donates more than $3.5 million in financial contributions and thousands of volunteer hours to the communities it serves. “Coborn’s is family-operated and shares the same values that make the Mendota area a prominent place to live,” said Inman. “They not only invest in their stores but in their employees and communities. We’re excited to join forces to create an incredible shopping experience for our guests and better serve the people of Mendota.”

Multi-year grant funds youth programming Through a multi-year grant, the City of Mendota will increase its programming to steer the youth in the community away from the dangers of substance abuse. The City of Mendota was selected for the grant of $1.875 million from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. The grant, which will be paid out at $375,000 for the next five years, will be used to establish positive activities, classroom curriculum and community connections to help prevent youth substance use and increase mental wellness, explained Annie Short, a Mendota resident and volunteer grant writer with the city. “We want to create positive engagements and positive environments for our young people,” Short said. The City of Mendota will establish a community coalition to help steer the project. The coalition will include

representatives from the local school districts, police department, community organizations and residents. The city will hire staff to oversee the grant and its programming. In addition to the grant to increase opportunities to support the youth, the City

of Mendota will focus on revitalizing downtown after two major fires burned down blocks of buildings on Main Street and Illinois Avenue in late 2022. “We have been working with insurance, applying for grants and establishing design

plans,” said Emily McConville, City of Mendota City Clerk and Economic Developer. “With the grant to support our youth and the ability to start rebuilding where the fires happened, we are excited for what is to come to Mendota in 2024.”

Mendota welcomes Surf Internet Last year, the Mendota community welcomed Surf Internet, a fiber-optic internet provider based in the Great Lakes region. From the start, the transformation of Mendota from an underserved community to fiber-optic city was more than business. It was born from strong personal connections in the community and guided by a business leader who strives for innovation while maintaining strong connections to his team members. Indiana native Gene Crusie is one of the co-founders and current CEO of Surf, which started in the late 1990s with dial-up internet services. Now, he and his team are bringing highspeed, reliable Internet service to rural areas. “Access to fiber internet isn’t just about speed. We’ve been extraordinarily innovative in solving a host of problems that smaller, rural areas are experiencing by providing advanced connectivity,” Crusie said.

Having access to highspeed internet creates windows of opportunity, enabling residents in some of the region’s rural communities to work and study from home, stream programming, and improve healthcare access with telemedicine visits that take place online. “I believe high-speed internet is one of the great equalizers of our time, giving rural communities access to the same resources one would find in the big city,” Crusie said. He and his team formed a partnership in Mendota thanks to lifelong resident Terry Barr. In 2017, Barr merged his company, Terry’s Computer Shack, with Surf. For years, he had listened as his customers lamented the lack of reliable internet service. As a part of Surf, he encouraged Crusie to expand its fiber-optic internet services to the Mendota area. Surf has provided wireless internet services to the Mendota area for over a decade.

18 November 2023 | Mendota Progress | A NewsTribune Publication

It’s fiber internet, however, that Crusie says will transform the community, calling it “future proof” and without limitations. “Fiber internet, with lightning-fast connectivity and the ability to upgrade to even faster speeds in the future, is a catalyst for current and ongoing innovation, which will lead to community transformation,” Crusie said. “We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to be a part of this monumental generational shift.” Fiber-optic technology utilizes strands of glass within a cable, allowing signals to travel at a rate significantly faster than wireless internet services. Further, the high-speed technology isn’t bogged down by the network, allowing it to work fast whether it is downloading or uploading data, Crusie explained. In other words, the 1 gig speeds that Surf customers have available to them not only mean

faster upload and download times, but more bandwidth, allowing multiple people and devices to access the internet at the same time at consistent speeds. When it comes to company culture, Surf isn’t like other corporate internet companies. While it has grown tremendously with almost 200 members of its Midwest team, it remains a family-oriented company where people matter. Crusie takes time to send hand-written notes to his staff to mark birthdays, the arrival of a new child, or celebrate someone’s promotion. As the company CEO, he takes to heart his role of supporting his staff, while building new opportunities for the communities Surf serves. He sums up their unique culture, saying, “What sets Surf apart is that many of our team members live in the communities we serve, making our understanding and commitment to those communities both personal and truly exceptional.”

Sublette Farmers Elevator Co. Sublette Farmers Elevator was formed as a cooperative in 1919, owned by area farmers originally for the purpose of buying and selling of grain, coal, lumber, building materials and other merchandise and commodities used by farmers. Over the years, the elevator’s focus has shifted to drying, storage and merchandising of grain, but the cooperative also still operates a full-service lumber and building materials business, supplies local farmers and communities with fertilizer, livestock and pet feed, seed, culverts, utility poles, ammunition and Redneck Deer Blinds. Sublette Farmers Elevator continues to distribute profits back to stockholders based on the amount of business it has transacted and remains a viable part of the local economy.

Mendota home to ADM’s largest flour mill ADM’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in one project — continues to proudly reside in Mendota. The Archer Daniels Midland Flour Mill can produce more than 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts to be exact) and employs 40-50 people. The facility, for which construction began in June 2017 and was completed in 2019, can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties plus two types of whole wheat. Production started around September 2019. Why did ADM choose Mendota for the mill? ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, already had an existing ADM grain transfer facility in Mendota with a rail loop initially constructed by Fasco Mills before ADM bought the local company in 2007. However, ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area and the company needed a new location to better serve

its customers, while Mendota’s strong workforce would provide the company with the employees needed to be able to

make the highest quality flour. ADM is a proud Mendota business and supporter of the Mendota area as its actively

involved in community events like the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival and ag-related projects across the region.

Dr. Cindy has been serving Mendota and the surrounding communities for 30 years, working with families and patients of all ages. Mendota Elementary #289 The summer of 2023 had a large number of facility updates on the Mendota Elementary #289 campus. In all three buildings, an additional set of secured doors was added to the main entrance. Not only does this help us better direct visitors, but also increases the efficiency of each building office. Additionally, exterior and interior doors and locks were updated to make each building more secure. A new campus-wide camera surveillance system has been approved and is set to be installed this November. More work that will be done in November: solar panel installation. On each building rooftop, solar panels will be placed and connected to the power grid. Thanks to State and Federal grants paying for 90% of the project cost, these panels will help the District save hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs over the next two decades. Not to be left out, the Northbrook gym received a much-needed facelift: repainting of the gym floor and walls, new divider curtain, scoreboard and scorer’s table. All of this work has been done within the confines of well-designed financial and facilities plans that will see the District in very solid financial shape, having $8M+ in reserves at the end of this fiscal year. We are very excited about our campus improvements, as we strive to provide our students, staff and community with a safe learning environment that they are proud of.

Mendota YMCA The Mendota YMCA is proving that it is “more than a gym.” This past year new programs were created and established programs saw their largest enrollments since its brick-and-mortar establishment 10 years ago. However, the YMCA is moving beyond just fitness and sports and focusing on collaborating with other organizations to bring cultural and educational programming to its repertoire. This year, the Mendota YMCA has worked with Community Heart and Soul and Reimagine Mendota on their initiative to rebuild and revitalize the community. It also has collaborated with the Illinois Valley Hispanic Partnership Council on cultural events, and with the Mendota Chapter of FFA for what has become an annual community service Fall Clean-up for senior citizens and people with disabilities. “There are quite a few great organizations in Mendota that are working hard to serve the Mendota community and surrounding areas. We have been reaching out and collaborating to better serve,” said Steve Donnell, Mendota Area YMCA Branch Manager. “There is a concerted effort among the various organizations to promote each other and the programs and services we each provide.” Looking forward, the Mendota YMCA will continue to work together with community organizations, schools, and the city of Mendota to provide programs and services appealing and accessible to all persons and families in the community. This is part of its never-ending efforts to be “more than a gym.”

The volunteers of Reimagine Mendota are working hard to revitalize the community and the downtown business district. In March 2023, the organization was awarded the Heart & Soul Seed Grant Program, providing $10,000 with a required matching fund of $10,000. The grant focus is to study what residents of Mendota like about the city and what they want for the city. The data gathered will help the city develop a community plan and identify future projects for Reimagine Mendota. For more information and regular updates, visit reimaginemendota.org or check out the group Facebook page.

Starved Rock Wood Products looks forward to growth on all fronts in 2024 For many years, Mendota-based Starved Rock Wood Products has been known for creating beautiful cabinets that are built to last. Its Wood Working Beautifully tagline reflects the fact that this is a company which doesn’t only care about how things look on the surface, but which also believes in creating enduring quality and strength. Now that same philosophy is being applied to the company itself, as it ramps up for its next chapter of growth. With its award- winning 9,000sqft showroom in Glenview and entry into the greater Chicagoland market, and with its planned opening of a new world-class showroom in Mendota next year, the company has used 2023 to prepare itself for the future; some new team members, some new and additional machines, tools and processes, and renewed focus on unlocking the talent and potential of its Mendota workforce. Michelle Christ, SRWP President, explained; “Our goal is that the culture of this company should be as wellcrafted, enduring and as enjoyable as any of our cabinets. We’re working to create an environment in which leadership and accountability is a state of mind, not just a title. There are so many ambitious and talented employees already at the company, many of whom have great ideas about how we can become an even stronger company. We have a very strong bench in place for the future - all of them people who care as passionately as I do about the continued success of Starved Rock Wood Products.” After five years of substantial investment in its 2 Mendota plants and the showroom in Glenview, Starved Rock Wood Products has many competitive advantages in the marketplace; a 135,000sqft factory space on Washington St with plenty of room to grow; a state-ofthe-art production facility;

The new showroom in Mendota is on course to open in the Summer of 2024.

a strong brand identity and beautiful showroom spaces to attract customers. The company believes that the showroom in Mendota will become a destination, drawing many people from across the region who are looking for inspiration and help with their kitchen and bathroom projects. Michelle added; “Of course, our number one priority with

the showroom is to showcase our products, but we also believe that the space can benefit the wider Mendota community, not only by creating jobs, but by drawing people to the city who might otherwise never have visited. And that benefits everyone.” The Washington St showroom is undergoing development, with the outside facade due for completion by the end of the year, allowing for the interior work to begin ahead of a planned opening in the Summer of 2024. Peter Limberger, Chairman of CL Enterprises which owns Starved Rock Wood Products, added; “CLE was founded on the belief that great things can happen in small towns, if only the opportunity is created. When we first acquired

Starved Rock Wood Products it was a small family business, manufacturing only stairs and some millwork. Today we have a much larger company with many more product lines gaining traction across the Midwest and expanding into new markets with high quality kitchen and bathroom cabinets - all made in Mendota. We sell direct from the factory, we deliver and we install and have no middlemen between us and our customers. We are a one stop shop. We are grateful to everyone at the company for their hard work and commitment during this time of change, and to the city and people of Mendota for their ongoing support for this local gem of a business. There is a lot to look forward to in 2024”

Home Truths.

Over the last 6 years Starved Rock Wood Products has grown rapidly to become a leading regional manufacturer of high-quality kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Now, as we look forward to our next stage of growth, we’re busy making sure we are set up properly for the next chapter. But while our wings may have spread, our feet remain firmly on the ground, specifically here in our hometown. We’ve invested more than $20 million creating a state-of-the-art production facility here in Mendota, installing the latest automated equipment to complement the woodworking skills of our team. We continue to hire some of the brightest and best talent Mendota has to offer, and our team is working hard to complete our new modern showroom on Washington Street. We’re proud to call Mendota home, and even more proud that so many local people continue to choose Starved Rock Wood Products as the place to build successful careers. Thank you, Mendota, for your continued support for our business. Together we can grow to new heights.
