Dear Readers,
Like any year, last year had some ups and downs but the one thing that remains consistent is our commitment to the community and creating products that reflect that. This year, we felt it was even more important to focus on what makes our community GREAT – Our local businesses, their employees. This magazine is our annual look at the local business community. We give local businesses the opportunity to have an article written so they can give you, the readers, an in-depth look into their business.
Please take the time to look through this publication and let the businesses know you saw their ad or article. These businesses and their employees are the lifeblood of our community and deserve our continued support. Every dollar spent with a local business comes back into our community.
We encourage your feedback. If you have ideas on how we can improve this magazine or any of our other publications, please feel free to reach out to me. You can reach me, Jeanette Smith at jmsmith@shawmedia.com.
I hope you enjoy reading our magazine as much as we enjoy bringing it to you and as always, I encourage everyone to SHOP LOCAL!!!

Schweickert Ganassin Krzak Rundio, LLP: Fighting for the injured
Schweickert Ganassin Krzak Rundio, LLP (“SGKR”) is a personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm head-quartered in Peru, with offices in Ottawa, Morris and Chicago dedicated to protecting the rights of injury victims and getting them results. SGKR was voted the top personal injury firm in North Central Illinois in the Studstill Media “Best of North Central Illinois” poll the past three years.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from our community,” said partner Michael Krzak. “We will continue to maintain our strong work ethic when fighting for justice for injured Illinois citizens. Our lawyers are dedicated to providing trusted and reliable legal services to those who have been wrongfully injured. We believe that anyone who is injured has the right to be made whole again and to be treated with dignity and respect. That principle drives our lawyers to work hard every day to look out for and serve our clients’ interests in the best manner possible. For decades, we have been standing up for the rights of hard-working people in North Central Illinois. Legal matters can get complex. We are here to communicate with and guide our clients through the process.”
SGKR grew from Schweickert & Ganassin, a full-service law practice that provided decades of service in personal injury and workers’ compensation cases under longtime partners Douglas Schweickert and Scott Ganassin. Krzak, who has represented death and injury victims in major aviation crashes, truck crashes, train derailments, automobile collisions and other transportation incidents in Chicago and throughout the world, and Matthew Rundio, who has successfully prosecuted injury and wrongful death claims from automobile, trucking, railroad and medical negligence victims, joined the firm in 2018.
The firm has other expe-
rienced attorneys, including Frederick Glassman, a seasoned workers compensation attorney and Adriane LaShure, who has repeatedly been named an Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Star.
Last year the firm welcomed LaSalle-Peru High School alumna Melinda Rowe-Sullivan who brings her experiences from formerly defending employees in worker compensation cases and as a former arbitrator for the Illinois Workers’ Compensation, where she served for six years. Her experience of representing the employer’s, workers and as an arbitrator gives her a unique perspective and allows her to skillfully navigate issues that arise in worker’s compensation cases.
The firm has recovered
hundreds of millions of dollars for their clients. Krzak settled a case involving injuries sustained by a resident of the Illinois Valley in an automobile accident for $2.2 million and a truck accident case for $9.2 million in Chicago.
SGKR provides free case evaluations to potential new clients. To learn more about the firm, you can visit them at www.ganassin.com.
Our team has earned several accolades. Krzak was recognized in the 2022 Edition of the Best Lawyers in America by his peers for his exceptional work in the practice of Personal Injury Litigation and Aviation litigation. It was the sixth consecutive year he received the honor. Rundio and Krzak made the exclusive list of talented attorneys in Leading and Emerging Lawyers magazine for their work in personal injury litigation. Krzak has been honored annually since 2011 and Rundio since 2013. Krzak and Rundio have been named Illinois Super Lawyers. Only
the top 5 percent of the state’s experienced lawyers receive this commendation. Rundio has been recognized with this honor since 2013 and Krzak since 2014.
SGKR believes in supporting the community and its team regularly sponsor non-profits and youth sports to help uplift the community. The long list includes monetary donations to the Illinois Valley, Hall Township and Bureau County food pantries; participation in the Hometown Hero Contest honoring community heroes; sponsoring the Prairie State Legal Services pig roast to help fund legal services for those in need; and monetary support for the “Fill the Truck with Food” drive benefiting the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. SGKR also is a sponsor of the LaSalle girls’ softball, Ottawa Soccer Club, Special Olympics, St.
City of Mendota: Park improvements take shape
Dust off your pickleball paddle as the City of Mendota staff prepares to open four new courts this summer at Mendota Lake Park as well as other improvements to the park facilities.
With 18 acres Mendota Lake Park is one of the area’s largest recreational areas. It currently houses two little league baseball diamonds, two basketball courts, four soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, picnic areas with playgrounds, shelters and restrooms.
The addition of a pickleball court has generated quite a buzz, err plink as pickleball players are anxious to enjoy games closer to home. Pickleball has been one of the fastest growing sports, combining elements of tennis, badminton and racquetball, it uses a net that is smaller than tennis or badminton and a smaller court size as well.
Many pickleball players in the area travel to other cities to find playing time at indoor and
outdoor courts and it will be great to have four courts closer to home, said Nick Stremlau, superintendent for Streets, Parks and Public Property for the City of Mendota.
The new court are expected to open by summer, just in time for players to enjoy the outdoor games during the warmer weather months.
Another new addition coming to Lake Mendota Park is the new dog park. Work on the new dog park started last fall and should be complete by summer, Stremlau said. The dog park is an area roughly 200 feet by 100 feet and completely fenced in in an area for smaller dogs separate from the rest of the
dog park. Stremlau said the plans include adding some structures to the dog park at a later date, to accommodate agility training.
Another park improvement includes the renovation of a restroom structure and the addition of a second structure to Mendota Lake Park. The renovations to the existing structure included a new roof and new fixtures and updates including running water. The first facility is expected to open this summer while the second structure, known as the west structure, will open later in the year.
In contrast to the busy activities at Mendota Lake Park, Stremlau said visitors may enjoy a more serene visit at Lake Kakusha which encompasses 53 acres of park land and has some of the best hiking trails in the area.
“It’s a hidden treasure,” Stremlau said.
It’s also a great place to enjoy kayaking and non-gas motor boats as well as fishing.

The Cantlin Law Firm more than attorneys, they are family
The Cantlin Law Firm is not your typical law firm as it is not every day the attorneys in the firm are family members. Being family is what makes The Cantlin Law Firm unique as teamwork and collaboration comes naturally when working with family.
The venerable Ottawa law firm was established by John L Cantlin in 1977. John, who goes by Jack, works alongside four of his five children, Christina, who recently returned after finishing an appointment as a Circuit Judge, Timothy, Joseph, and Megan. Jack’s oldest son, Ryan, is also an attorney. He works for the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s office.
Each attorney focuses on different areas of the law. Jack focuses on personal injury, wrongful death litigation, estate administration, and estate planning. Christina’s days are usually spent focusing on municipal law as corporation counsel for the City of Ottawa along with handling the Managing Partner duties. Timothy focuses on personal injury, wrongful death, and litigation. Joseph focuses on farm, commercial, and residential real estate transactions, estate planning, and estate administration. Megan focuses on municipal law
by assisting with the City of Ottawa and handles civil litigation, traffic/DUIs, and business entities. With each attorney focusing on different areas of the law, clients can build and maintain a relationship with the firm and still receive experienced legal advice in many areas of the law. For example, while the initial client contact with the firm might be for a personal injury case, the client can get the same experienced legal advice when they are ready to sell or buy a new home or need assistance when a loved one passes away.
Not only is The Cantlin Law Firm unique by being family members, its
not every day you hear the lawyers also continue to operate a family grain farm. By growing up on a farm, Jack and his children learned at a young age that hard work and dedication is necessary to be successful. This hard work and dedication reflect in their law practice to ensure they provide their clients with the best possible representation. With the family’s agricultural background, the firm is uniquely positioned to have the ability and understanding to confidently represent a variety of farmer-clients and their interests.
The Cantlin Law Firm is also a proud supporter of the community to ensure they give back to the community that supports their long-standing legal practice. The Cantlin Law Firm proudly supports youth organizations such as Little League, Illinois Valley Gymnastics Academy, and the Ottawa Soccer Club. The Firm also supports multiple local schools and provides a scholarship at IVCC each year. With the family’s strong agricultural ties, the Firm also supports agricultural programs such as 4-H and FFA.
The Cantlin Law Firm is a uniquely positioned law firm that uses teamwork, experience, and dedication to provide clients with the results they deserve.

In This Moment . . .
From its humble beginning more than a century ago in the family barn in LaSalle, Illinois, where Edward Hegeler Carus began making potassium permanganate, to its current position as a leader in specialty chemistries made to keep air, water, and soil clean and safe, Carus LLC has exemplified innovation, creativity, resilience, and responsibility that have withstood the test of time. Our story tells of how a family, community, and company built and strengthened one another—right here in Starved Rock Country.
Today, Carus remains a family-owned company that manufactures and supplies an extensive range of products used to solve global environmental problems in the municipal, industrial, remediation and air purification markets. We’re ever evolving to meet the growing and changing needs of our customers and the world, with sustainability being a primary focus.
As a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Carus is dedicated to safety and sustainability in the communities where we operate and the products we produce. We proudly participate in the ACC’s award-winning Responsible Care®, the chemical industry’s world-class environment, health, safety, and security performance initiative. Carus’ drive for continual improvement and sustainability is grounded in principles laid forth in the very beginning by Edward Carus, who believed in free enterprise and social responsibility.
Through the decades, Carus has continued to value social responsibility as a pillar of our company culture. As such, we recognize Carus holds great responsibility, not only in terms of operating in a safe and sustainable manner, but as a community member too. The efforts we put forth to achieve company initiatives must also help support and lift our neighbors and friends. We’re a people-centered company, which is why we place a great deal of focus and energy on our community outreach efforts, as well as make employee engagement and satisfaction a top priority. We understand being a good community member is fundamental for making a meaningful difference here in Starved Rock Country.
We encourage our employees to become involved in our community by lending their voluntary support to programs that positively impact quality of life within the area. To support this initiative, Carus has a Volunteerism Policy in place to allow our employees up to eight hours of paid time per year to volunteer during normal working hours. Our employees are encouraged to volunteer in their children’s classrooms, join in litter cleanup efforts in the community, and participate in educational presentations or school demonstrations, among many other acts of goodwill.
At Carus, we remain committed to the strong relationships we have built and nurtured with our surrounding communities. The vast majority of those we employ at our manufacturing plant in LaSalle and our headquarters office in Peru call Starved Rock Country home. We are made up of mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and friends from the community. The outpouring of support and love we received on the day of the fire, and the weeks that have followed, have not gone unnoticed.
We are deeply moved and would like to thank the community tremendously for its continued patience, support, and kindness as we look to build an even better future.
We invite you to follow us on Facebook or visit carusllc. com, where you can read more about our sto-ried past in our historical timeline and learn about our commitment to maintaining sustainable, responsible, environmentally friendly operations.

Progress continues in Peru
Located on the Illinois River, Peru lies 3 miles west of the intersection of two major interstate highways: Interstate 39 and Interstate 80. The city is also the western terminus of the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal. Prior to its construction, the Illinois River was not navigable beyond Peru.
While rich in history, our community continues to evolve and grow. We are excited by the new developments that will become the future home for new businesses and residents. GAF Commercial Roofing, the largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer in North America is constructing a 450,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Peru in the newly created MVP Subdivision, an industrial park with excellent highway and rail access.
The Pohar’s Crossing Subdivision is projected to contain 57 residential lots and three commercial lots. Diamond Senior Apartments by 3 Diamond Development is a 56unit senior housing planned development that was pre-sold and has a waiting list.
The Illinois Valley Regional Airport improvements included the addition of seven new hangars.
Peru is home to several business districts. The Manufacturing district includes James Hardie, Unytite, Canam, Metokote, and Eakas Corporation. We’re home to large retailers including Wal-Mart, Target and Kohls as well as HyVee, Liberty Village, several restaurants, and branches of St. Margaret’s Health Peru. These businesses are some of the city’s largest employers. The US-6 Corridor includes Peru’s downtown with its historic mainstays, Debo’s Hardware, Vlastnik’s Menswear, Peru Pizza House and The Igloo.
We take pride in the history Peru offers. The city has at least three additional historic companies. It’s the national headquarters of American Nickeloid, started in 1898, and the W.H. Maze Co started the year the Illinois
and Michigan Canal opened in 1848, dealing in lumber and nails. This company is one of America’s last remaining nail makers. Peru is also home to the offices of Carus Chemical Company, started in 1915. Today it is one of the largest manufacturers of potassium permanganate in the world.
Peru’s real estate taxes are some of the lowest in LaSalle County thanks to being a regional retail hub. Peru generates 1 out of every 3 retail sales and retail sales tax dollars in LaSalle County. The City of Peru makes it a priority to keep its property taxes one of the lowest in North Central Illinois.
Careful planning by generations of community leaders
has produced high quality neighborhoods with proximity to open spaces, schools, medical care, places of work, recreation, and the riverfront.
Peru is proud of its park and recreation facilities including Centennial Park and its numerous shelters. Among them is the Schweickert Band Shell, which hosts summer concerts under the oaks. Baker Lake features fishing and a glimpse of wildlife wrapped in a onemile paved walking and biking path. Washington Park offers 12,000 square feet of fun with its baseball-themed splash pad.
For our baseball fans, Veterans Park features multiple baseball and softball fields, with more than $1 million
dollars in upgrades to Schweickert Stadium. The Pistol Shrimp, a collegiate Prospect League baseball team, relocated to Peru and played their first season in the summer of 2021. The stadium is also home to the Illinois Valley Community College.
Peru is home to the Illinois Valley YMCA. Visit their outstanding health and fitness facility as well as three indoor swimming pools and a water park, one of the finest of its size in the country.
Peru is home to state-ofthe-art school systems. Both public and private schools offer modern facilities that boast the latest technology. The Peru area encompasses two historic high schools, LaSalle-Peru Township, and St. Bede Academy. Both prepare their students for continuing education or immediately joining our local workforce.
We take great pride in our city. Peru is a great place to live, work, shop, and play.
