The Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce is a regional chamber which serves as an advocate and support system for businesses across Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee. Over the past 19 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the transformation of our local business landscape, especially as technology and online shopping reshaped how we interact with businesses and services. COVID-19 further accelerated this shift, intensifying the challenge of maintaining the personal connections that once characterized our local transactions.
Despite these obstacles, it was inspiring to see how resilient our local businesses were during the pandemic. Many not only survived but found ways to thrive in that unprecedented period. As we’ve transitioned back to a “new normal,” it’s evident that the camaraderie and mutual support that strengthened us during those challenging times has faded for some, along with the loss of a few beloved staple businesses.
At NKCC, we are committed to fostering the growth and resilience of our local businesses, ensuring they have the resources and connections they need to prosper. Through diverse networking events, educational seminars, and professional development sessions, we aim to support our members in marketing, finance, social media, and other crucial areas. These tools are essential for small business owners working with limited resources, helping them succeed in a competitive market.
In addition to supporting our business community, I am personally involved in several nonprofit boards that enrich our region. For example, our Dollars for Scholars Committee raised over $8,000 this year, awarding scholarships to local students pursuing their educational dreams.
Supporting our local businesses is crucial for a thriving community. When you shop locally, you’re not only backing your neighbors but also helping fund police, fire services, schools, and other resources that enhance our quality of life. Every dollar spent locally is an investment in the vitality of Northern Kane, contributing to a vibrant, connected community we can all be proud to call home.
Thank you for being a part of this vision and for supporting our chamber’s mission to create a dynamic Northern Kane region. Let’s continue to build a future where our community and businesses can flourish together.
Sincerely,
Melissa Hernandez

West Dundee offers small-town charm and regional convenience. The community’s rich heritage is showcased in the historic downtown business district which offers a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment adjacent to the peaceful Fox River.
As the physical and symbolic heart of the community, historic downtown West Dundee has seen significant investment in building stock with multiple authentic restorations and the new businesses that followed.
The district’s burgeoning dining scene is anchored by Emmett’s Brewing Co. and The Village Squire. Joining these mainstays are Bleuroot, Bamboozels, El Pato Loco, Elder & Oat café, and Woodfire. This culinary collection offers something for everyone – microbrews, American fare, farm-to-table creations, scratch-made baked goods, and authentic Mexican and Roman cuisine, all within a comfortable block’s walk. Entertainment in the downtown district comes to life at Rookies Rochaus, an intimate concert experience that attracts a variety of acts to this restored, state-of-the-art facility which originally served as a venue for vaudeville.
Specialty stores are again starting to take center stage in the district, with mainstay Around the Corner Candy joined by home-centric retailers Boxwood Home Design & Cabinetry, Lady Bug Lane, and The Half Full Nest Vintage Market. The district features numerous professional services, and the opportunity to pamper oneself at Spa Bleu.

Nestled within Dundee Township, the Village of Sleepy Hollow stands as a charming hamlet, its history dating back to its establishment in 1958. This idyllic residential community, home to fewer than 3,400 residents, is a departure from the bustling business and industry found in its Fox River Valley neighbors. Sleepy Hollow’s appeal lies in its rural tranquility, offering respite from the clamor, traffic, and urban pressures.
The citizens of Sleepy Hollow hold deep affection for their close-knit family community. Guided by a dedicated president and board of trustees, the village remains resolute in preserving its rustic small-town ambiance while embracing the promise of the future. This community honors its history even as it progresses into the next century.
Floyd Falese, Sleepy Hollow’s inaugural village president and the visionary behind its unique character, enlisted the expertise of landscape artist and renowned planner Raymond W. Hazekamp. Together, they conceived a village with meandering roads, absent of curbs and sidewalks, leading to cul-de-sacs and homes nestled on generous half-acre lots. Hazekamp aptly coined this design “the Sleepy Hollow concept of good living,” and remarkably, not a single tree was felled in the process.
Established in 1835, Dundee Township is one of the oldest governments in the Fox River Valley. Its six square miles include the vibrant river towns of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow and parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Gilberts.
The Dundee Township Supervisor’s Office acts on a long tradition of neighbors helping neighbors by offering essential services to residents in need. For more information on assistance programs such as Ride in Kane and General Assistance, visit www.dundeetownship. org.
In addition, the Supervisor’s office operates two public cemeteries. The historic West Cemetery is located on Route 31 in West Dundee. The East Cemetery on Route 25 in East Dundee features a Columbaria Garden, which provides a tranquil, natural setting for the inurnment of cremated remains.
The Township also manages eight open space recreation areas where a loyal following of volunteers are working with staff to ecologically restore more than 1000 acres. These rich habitats offer trail systems to allow hikers, birders, and horseback riders to exist harmoniously with wildlife. A steady stream of people can be found visiting Raceway Woods, Snuffy’s Prairie, Dixie Briggs Fromm Illinois State Nature Preserve, Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary, Library Springs, Salamander Springs, and Wahoo Woods – a nature play park.
The Assessor’s office maintains residential, commercial, and industrial property assessments and record systems. They also assist
residents with homestead and senior exemptions, senior tax freeze documentation, and real estate tax complaints.
The Highway Commissioner and crew offers the following services to residents on township roads: snow removal, road repair and maintenance, brush trimming along right-of-ways, maintenance of township highway property and flood control.

The day culminates with the lighting of the huge bonfire at 6 p.m. and the appearance of the “headless horseman” riding in on a majestic horse, to the delight of the large crowd.
