Learn about DIY home security Homes are a safe haven and comfortable retreat for individuals and families. Home invasions can compromise that feeling of safety and security, making people feel uncomfortable and unsafe in their own homes. Although the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics indicate property crime rates have seen a significant decline in the last few years, there are still roughly 2.5 million burglaries a year, 66 percent of which involve home break-ins. Break-ins are 6 percent more likely to occur between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., when people are out at work or running errands than at other times of day. Homes without a security system are 300 percent more likely to be burglarized, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Installing a security system may be the goal of homeowners looking to protect themselves and their belongings. Thanks to availability of new, user-friendly products, do-it-yourselfers can, in many instances, install their own home security systems. Safety.com says smart home integration, mobile apps and wireless connectivity are hallmarks of modern DIY home security systems. Many have the same components as traditional home security systems, but do not require professional installation or monitoring, even though such options are available. When shopping for home security systems, people can look for the following features to compare offerings. • Sensors: Sensors will detect motion and activity in the house. Sensors also may be attached to doors and windows to determine if either are open. Some systems are designed to send alerts to a phone when triggered. • Cameras: Working in conjunction with sensors, cameras can provide an eye on activity in and outside of a home, adding another layer of protection. • Smart features: With smart home connectivity, security systems can be engaged and turned off from remote locations. Many DIY versions of home security systems work wirelessly and can be set up in a relatively short period of time. While wired systems use existing electric and telephone lines to connect security components, wireless

systems connect components to a main panel via radio frequency. One of the benefits of wireless tech is that it enables DIYers to add components and replace them as needed without major hassle. In addition, wireless security systems do not require construction during the installation process. More and more homeowners are embracing DIY home security systems to keep their homes safe.

What is sweating a pipe? Copper plumbing long has been a standard in home construction. Anyone who has a home with copper pipes should have an understanding of how to make repairs in the case of a leak or if modifications need to be made. “Sweating pipes” is one term homeowners may hear when maintaining their pipes. Sweating a pipe refers to soldering a pipe or the joint. Sweating seals a new joint or mends a fault. When sweating a pipe, it is important to do the job correctly so that a soldered pipe can last for years and years. PlanItDIY, a source for how-to advice, says that sweating pipes involves some key steps. • Cut the pipes to the right length using a copper tube cutter or hacksaw. • Use a file or wire brush to remove burs and smooth down the ends. • Clean the end of the copper pipe with a cleaning brush until the surface is bright
all around. In addition, clean the inside of all fittings. • Brush plumbing flux on the brushed surfaces and assemble the joint. The how-to resource Hunker says flux is an acidic paste applied to all of the pieces of copper that you want to connect together. The flux paste will draw in the solder after the pipe is heated using a blow torch. The acid in the flux attracts the solder into the seam between the two copper pieces and fills the gap while creating a semi-permanent bond between the pieces. • To create the seal, move the flame around the joint to heat it evenly. The copper will get shiny, and the flux will melt. When the pipe begins to dull and the flux sizzles and smokes, it is time to apply solder. Touch lead-free plumbing solder to the joint and apply more heat.

We Are The
SOLUTION!
• The sweating process is finished when the solder bubbles out of the end of the seam. Let cool and the joint should now be water-tight. Sweating pipes gets easier with practice. DIYers who are nervous about plumbing projects that involve sweating can be reassured there are connection products available that are used in lieu of flux and solder. These push-to-connect fittings seal joints as well. Individuals can speak with experts at hardware and home improvement stores to find the best products for their needs and skill levels.

How to keep your house warm - even in freezing temperatures (BPT) - With the early arrival of winter, the grip of cold temperatures and snowfall that landed along with it, now is a good time to start thinking about keeping your home warm and cozy all season long. This winter, consider the strategies below to keep your house warm, even during the most frigid days of the year. 1. Help your HVAC system work more efficiently No matter what kind of heating system you have, you can take steps to keep it working at its best.
• Schedule annual heating tune-ups • Change the furnace filter frequently • Make sure ductwork dampers are open • Check air vents - are they open? Are any blocked by furniture? • If you have a home with radiators, make sure they aren’t
blocked
• Avoid wild temperature swings - set your thermostat for reasonable highs and lows at night and during the day, since extremely low temps could result in freezing pipes, and your system has to work extra hard to aim for higher temps than it can handle • See TEMPERATURES on page 10

2. Consider upgrading your HVAC system
• Improve your doors’ weather stripping and use a draft blocker to further keep cold air out
If you have an older system that just can’t keep up or you live in a climate with extreme temperatures, consider upgrading to a new high-efficiency heating system. It may save you money and energy in the long run, while increasing your comfort level.
• For windows, an insulation kit and heavy drapes can help you prevent leaks • If you have an unused fireplace, install a fireplace plug to keep warm air from heading up the chimney
Thanks to advances in technology, today’s HVAC equipment can provide more consistent air flow and better maintain a constant temperature in every room. In the middle of winter, all of that adds up to a more comfortable and cozy home without the enormous utility bill.
• Cover up mail slots or pet door flaps that may be leaking air, especially at night
For the latest and greatest in comfort technology for your winter upgrade, consider a duct-free split system equipped with LG’s newest heating technology, the compact and powerful LGRED° (Reliable to Extreme Degrees), designed for even the coldest of climates. With continuous heating capabilities down to -13° Fahrenheit, LGRED° technology provides superior heating performance that will keep you warm all winter long. This increased performance not only delivers heat when traditional HVAC systems are unable, but operates with top notch efficiency, cutting energy costs and increasing savings. Pair this technology with sleek indoor units, like the LG Art CoolTM lineup, for comfort without sacrificing style. An added plus is that LG systems can make one or many rooms perfectly toasty without tearing up walls or altering the home’s appearance. 3. Block the leaks If you have drafts or leaks in your home, you’re losing valuable heated air and letting in the cold. Start by checking doors and windows for any drafts.
• Close vents and shut doors to rooms that are seldom used, so more warm air can be redirected to rooms in use • Schedule an energy audit from your energy company to identify areas for improvement • Attic insulation is also recommended, since heat rises 4. Reverse ceiling fans
As heat does rise, ceiling fans set on low and adjusted to turn clockwise will help pull up cold air and draw down and circulate warm air that’s hanging out near the ceiling. 5. Warm your floors When heat rises, don’t leave your floors out in the cold.
• If you’re interested in remodeling, radiant floor heating can help warm up a room, and has become especially popular for bathrooms • Invest in thick, plush rugs to help rooms feel warmer to your feet Following just a few of these tips will make a big difference in helping your house feel cozy and warm, even during the most extreme cold temperatures of winter. To learn more about ways to easily improve your home’s warmth this winter, visit LGHVAC.com.

What to know about DIY insulation Perhaps due in part to the popularity of home improvement television shows, many homeowners now tackle an assortment of home projects without professional assistance. These weekend warriors embrace the do-it-yourself philosophy to home improvement, saving lots of money along the way. As rewarding as successful DIY projects can be, it’s important that homeowners avoid getting in over their heads. Some projects, such as those that involve plumbing or roofing, tend to be best left to the professionals. But many other projects, including insulation installation, are very DIY-friendly. Can I install insulation myself? The Insulation Institute notes that DIY insulation installation is definitely doable, though typically only when homeowners are installing certain types of insulation. The Institute notes that installing fiberglass or mineral wool insulation can be simple. However, homeowners who prefer spray foam insulation should leave installation to the professionals. What should I do before beginning the project? The Insulation Institute advises homeowners who are going to install insulation to determine if vapor retarders, sometimes referred to as “vapor barriers,” will need to be installed before they begin the project. Vapor diffusion retarders can reduce the amount of moisture transferred by air currents, but they are not always necessary. Factors such as climate, cladding type (i.e., brick, stucco, wood, etc.) and the location of the wall being insulated will help homeowners determine

if they need vapor diffusion retarders. Homes located in places with mixed climates often need vapor diffusion retarders. DIYers can visit www.insulationinstitute.org to learn more or consult with an insulation or watersealing professional to determine if they need vapor diffusion retarders. Determining R-value is another important pre-project step. Different climates require different insulation R-values, which the U.S. Department of Energy notes is a measurement of an insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulation effectiveness. The amount of R-value your insulation needs will depend on the climate, the existing heating and cooling system in the house and which part of the house you will be insulating. More information about R-value is available at energy.gov/ energysaver/weatherize/insulation. DIYers also will need the appropriate tools and attire before beginning an insulation installation project. In addition to the insulation itself, the online resource The Home Improvement Web® recommends the following tools: • Safety glasses • Dust mask or respirator • Stapler (electric, standard, or hammer type) • 3⁄8” or 1⁄2” staples • Protective clothing • Work light • Tape measure • Extension cord • Utility knife and extra blades • Stepladder(s) • Straightedge for cutting insulation DIYers can access any number of insulation installation tutorials online to determine if they can install insulation without hiring professionals.
