Fernandez looks to keep positive momentum going on home soil

The tennis world returns to Canada for the 2024 National Bank Open, presented by Rogers. The tournament kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, with all matches airing live on Tennis Channel.

One of Canada’s top tennis talents is poised to have her best performance of the 2024 campaign, as 21-year-old sensation Leylah Fernandez has had a season full of growth, including boasting an impressive grass court record of 7-2 on the season.

Fernandez pulled out a spectacular performance at Wimbledon this year, defeating Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the first round, winning 80% of both first-serve points and net points to outscore her opponent 72-57 on total points — solidly proving her ability to compete against higher-ranked opponents.

Unfortunately for Fernandez, she has yet to advance past the second round, falling short to No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki. In a thrilling three-set match, Fernandez nearly clinched the victory before running out of gas in the third set, with a final tally of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 for Wozniacki.

Despite this loss, Fernandez continues to prove her ability to excel on the sport’s biggest stages — including advancing to her first grass final earlier this season at Eastbourne International. Currently ranked 23rd in the world, look for Fernandez to come out focused and using her speed, agility and powerful baseline play as she prepares to compete against the best of the best. Don’t miss any of the action as Leylah Fernandez continues to chase greatness at the 2024 National Bank Open, presented by Rogers, kicking off Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto and airing on Tennis Channel.

A new era of warfare: ‘SEAL Team’ returns for explosive final season

A world at war needs saving once again, and the only ones for the job are the brave members of the most elite unit of the Navy SEALs. The long-running military drama series “SEAL Team” concludes its run in a 10-episode final season, premiering exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service Sunday, Aug. 11. The first two episodes drop on premiere day, with new episodes following weekly on Sundays.

The upcoming seventh season of “SEAL Team” sees Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz, “Bones”) lead Bravo team on a final mission to defend the United States against enemies abroad. These SEALs take on the most high-stakes missions at the drop of a hat.

In an official trailer for the new season, with blood literally on his hands, Jason ruminates on the violence he’s both endured and inflicted as a member of the highly trained unit and toasts “a new era of warfare.” He stands strong for his unit but must admit the voices questioning how he can keep going back into the fire aren’t wrong, especially as a widower with two children.

Also returning is Neil Brown Jr. (“Insecure”) as Chief Warrant Officer Ray Perry, whose looming retirement has him questioning whether leaving service behind could really be an option for him. Special Warfare Operator Sonny Quinn (A.J. Buckley, “Justified”) faces changing tactics and grief this season, while Lt. Lisa Davis (Toni

Trucks, “Corporate”) directs the team in a new direction that they may not all be ready to embrace.

“Operations like this are the next era of warfare ... invisible tactics with global consequences,” Davis explains in the official trailer before emphasizing: “evolve or fall behind.”

There’s also talk of brotherhood throughout the trailer, with action shots of firefights, explosions and covert operations next to heartfelt moments with the families Bravo team leaves behind when duty calls.

Bravo team is called upon to step in and complete a complicated mission on behalf of its country. Uprooted from their family lives back home, SEAL team members drop everything to fight for peace in a foreign land. This time, part of the season was filmed on location in Colombia.

Season 6 cast addition Raffi Barsoumian (“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) is back as Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Omar Hamza, whose new responsibilities in the unit help him immerse himself in the work to escape the trauma of his past.

Two new members join the unit for the series’ final season. Beau Knapp (“Road House,” 2024) is Drew Franklin, a chief special warfare officer; and “Blue Bloods” actor Dylan Walsh puts aside his NYC mayoral duties to slip into character as Capt. Walch.

Returning in recurring roles are Tyler Grey (“Northbound”) as Trent Sawyer; Justin Melnick (“Justified: City Primeval”) as Brock Reynolds; Alona Tal (“Truth Be Told”) as Stella Baxter; and Parisa Fakhri (“What We Do In the Shadows”) as Naima Perry.

The cast and crew of “SEAL Team” started saying their goodbyes to Bravo team when it was officially announced by Paramount+ that the series would end with its seventh season back in November of last year.

Drew

OF MISTLETOE MURDERS (FORTHCOMING) ON HALLMARK CHANNEL

Q: I heard that Sarah Drew is making a new series for Hallmark Channel. What is it, and when will it be on?

A: The “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Everwood” alum – who has made something of a cottage industry out of starring in cable films, for Lifetime as well as for Hallmark – will appear in a show based on the podcast “Mistletoe Murders,” in which she’ll play the owner of a holiday-themed store who doubles as an amateur sleuth. She’s assisted in the cases she tackles by a police detective and his daughter, and she also harbors a secret that could dismantle everything for her if it’s discovered by others.

It makes sense that “Mistletoe Murders” (which currently is in production in Toronto) is expected to debut during the coming holiday season, and while that will make Drew a major part of Hallmark’s seasonal plans, she was very much a Lifetime employee during that period last year. Though she’s normally seen on camera in the projects she makes, she stayed behind the scenes as the writer and producer of “A Cowboy Christmas Romance,” which starred Jana Kramer and got extra attention for being a bit more spicy than Lifetime’s traditional holiday fare.

In 2022, Drew also was in a yuletide mode for Lifetime as the writer and star of “Reindeer Games Homecoming.” She’s been no stranger when it comes to Christmas-oriented tales, since her other projects have included “Christmas in Vienna,” “Christmas Pen Pals” and “Twinkle All the Way.” She also has stayed in business with Hallmark at other times of the year, two recent examples being the films “Branching Out” and “Guiding Emily.”

Marcia Gay Harden

Q: Is there any chance of “So Help Me Todd” coming back to TV? What’s Marcia Gay Harden doing next?

A: You can never say never in showbiz, but it’s at least unlikely at this point that “So Help Me Todd” will be revived. As for its star, Marcia Gay Harden (who plays Margaret, the “me” referred to in the title), she’s not quite over it yet, but she’ll surely land on her very talented feet once she’s ready.

A few days after “So Help Me Todd” was cancelled by CBS midway through its second season, Harden shared a petition on her official Instagram account calling for another network to swoop in and rescue

it. She, like everyone else angry at the cancellation, is particularly aggrieved that the show ends on a cliffhanger.

“Make your voices heard, because we think you deserve to have a Season 3. We think we deserve to have a Season 3, to bring this story to a wonderful culmination.”

Sadly, even she seemed to give up hope a little in the weeks that followed. On May 16, the day of the show’s finale, she simply said, “Happy trails, until we meet again” — no mention of the petition.

The petition itself followed a similar arc: it started out

very strong in gathering signatures but seems to have lost momentum.

As for Harden’s next move, she hasn’t announced it yet — unless you count “continuing to collect awards” as a next move. She will receive the North Fork TV Festival’s Canopy Award in a few weeks for her “incomparable body of work,” meaning it’s not specifically “Todd”-related.

After that, she’ll almost certainly be snapped up by another show in need of some experience, glamour and gravitas, much like what she did for her other recent role — a supporting spot on the Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show.”

Q: Why haven’t I seen Ed Westwick anywhere since “Gossip Girl”?

A: The short answer to your question is, put simply: you’re not part of his target market.

He may have done a believable American growl as Chuck Bass in CW’s “Gossip Girl,” the late-2000s melodrama about spoiled Manhattan teens, but Ed Westwick is actually English.

He was part of an ensemble of young, unproven actors around whom the show was built. Some of those actors went on to more fame in the U.S. — such as Penn Badgley (now of Netflix’s buzzy drama “You”) and Blake Lively (who transitioned to a pretty solid film career, including the title role in 2015’s “The Age of Adaline” and the 2016 horror hit “The Shallows”).

Westwick has instead settled into a lower-key career split between the U.S. and his homeland. But most of the success happened over there.

That includes shows such as “White Gold,” a period comedy about unethical window salesmen in the early 1980s, and a role on the high-profile (but ultimately short-lived) sitcom reboot of the big-screen crime-comedy “Snatch.”

Meanwhile, over here, his biggest non-”Gossip” role was a smallish one in the 2011 biopic “J. Edgar.”

He’s setting his sights even further afield in his next project. He has a central role in the upcoming “Sandokan,” a lavish, pirate-themed miniseries that will debut in Italy before being distributed internationally.

Expanding the ever-popular Secrets Of franchise — and exposing the dark and dangerous underbelly of Greek Row — the bone-chilling “Houses of Horror: Secrets of College Greek Life” begins unraveling a treacherous tale Monday, Aug. 12, on A&E.

Throughout its six-episode season, “Houses of Horror” promises to examine some of the horrific truths behind the world of campus Greek life, offering real-life, first-person accounts of the extreme conditions — including hazing, sexual assault, drug use and systemic racism — that persist throughout many of these longstanding groups, known across America as a traditional part of the college experience.

In their description for the upcoming series, A&E shared: “From a pledge at the University of Missouri hazed into drinking excessive quantities of alcohol that left him close to death, and a junior at the University of Minnesota who fought back against the Greek system after she was brutally raped by a fraternity brother, to a shocking set of overdose deaths at San Diego State University, and the infamous Machine, steeped in racist traditions of the Old South, at the University of Alabama, the series offers a far-reaching examination of how the seemingly fun and frivolous world of Greek life could hide a much darker underbelly.”

The stories shared are shocking and their implications are harrowing. In a sneak peek for “Houses of Horror” later shared by the network, viewers are even introduced to 19-year-old Daniel Santulli, who was brutally hazed by his classmates at the University of Missouri when attempting to pledge for the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity as a freshman. Made to consume a lethal amount of alcohol, Santulli was then left unsupervised and unconscious, soon expe-

riencing a cardiac arrest that led to lifelong brain damage. Daniel’s story, as explored through sitdown interviews with his parents, Tom and Mary Pat Santulli, heartbreaking as it is, is only one of many.

Through exclusive, sit-down interviews with those involved in past offenses, including former fraternity and sorority members, family, law enforcement and experts, episodes unravel how these organizations — ones created to offer a space of community and acceptance for young adults — can, according to A&E, “have far-reaching consequences that can turn dangerous, and even deadly.”

Produced by Eli Holzman (“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), Aaron Saidman (“Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath”) and Matt Shanfield (“Shark Tank”) for The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), “Houses of Horror: Secrets of College Greek Life” premieres Monday, Aug. 12, on A&E.
