Boston Fleet look to avenge earlyseason loss to Toronto Sceptres

A thrilling 2024-25 PWHL season continues as the Boston Fleet get set to host the Toronto Sceptres Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, with the puck drop airing live on YouTube.

With the 2024-25 season well underway, the Sceptres have had a slower start than expected, in comparison to their performance from last season, with the team sitting at 1-3-0 as of press time. Despite this, the Sceptres offensive game is a formidable one, with Daryl Watts, Sarah Nurse and British Columbia native Hannah Miller all leading the team in goals and assists.

Miller was a key piece of the Sceptres’ inaugural season, tallying 14 points in 23 games, including two game-winning goals during their team-record 11-game win streak. This season, she’s back at it again, leading the team with two goals and two assists in four games, including scoring a goal against the Fleet in their previous matchup earlier this season. Miller’s ability to score big goals will be crucial against a Boston team that has only conceded nine goals as of press time.

The Fleet, with a record of 2-2-0, are hungry to get a win back after falling to the Sceptres 3-1 earlier this season. Captain Hilary Knight leads the team with four points (two goals, two assists) in four games. Meanwhile, defender Megan Keller, continuing to showcase her versatility to play an all-around game, has also contributed with three points (two goals, one assist).

Fans can expect an entertaining matchup between two teams hungry for points as both teams continue their pursuit of making the playoffs.

From novel to Netflix: ‘The Night Agent’ premieres second season

Who is the real bad guy in “Night Agent”? To those unfamiliar with the drama, the question points to several shifting plots and potential double-crosses within the storyline. For those following along with the series and patiently awaiting a second season, this question comes across as completely understandable given that series is “filled with baddies” (per Netflix).

With 10 45-minute episodes already on Netflix from Season 1 and a recent confirmation that Season 3 is already in the casting stages, Netflix welcomes “The Night Agent” Season 2, premiering Thursday, Jan. 23.

Based on the novel of the same name by American journalist and New York Times bestselling author Matthew Quirk, “The Night Agent” follows Peter Sutherland (played on screen by Gabriel Basso, “Juror #2,” 2024), a low-level FBI agent who “works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings” (per Netflix). One evening, however, the phone does ring, prompting Sutherland to take on a case so big it would impact the entire country.

As it turns out (and now may be a good time to mention that several mild spoilers from Season 1 lay ahead), the basement phone is tied to “an emergency line for undercover spies” (per Netflix). When Sutherland answers the call, he

hears a woman’s voice explain that a double homicide has just taken place and she fears she may be next. Springing into action to protect the civilian who somehow managed to find the night agents’ helpline, what follows is an action-packed season filled with assassination attempts, double-crosses, brazen attacks, mistaken identities, terrorist plots and oh so much running.

“Imagine ‘All the President’s Men’ [1976] with car chases,” said creator Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) to Netflix’s online publication, Tudum. “If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then ‘The Night Agent’ is for you.”

On the note of “political intrigue,” the spy series holds nothing back. With all the twists and turns of a good murder mystery and shady, motivated characters akin to “House of Cards” and “Game of Thrones,” “The Night Agent” all but urges viewers not to get too attached to any one character. While audiences now know who committed the D.C. Metro bombing in Season 1, matters become far more sinister when it is revealed that others have been pulling the strings behind the scenes.

This season, the series dives into an increasingly shadowy world. After Peter’s success in Season 1, he has earned the opportunity to work in the secretive organization Night Action, which pushes him “into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply” (per Netflix).

“There are people here who make bad choices for what they think are the right reasons,” Ryan explains to Netflix during another interview. “But that’s a slippery slope that leads to increased bad decisions, where suddenly you look up and ... you’ve lost your soul.”

Julie Andrews OF THE SOUND OF MUSIC ON ABC

Q: It’s always

A: Though Mary Martin originated the role in the Broadway production, she didn’t have the same stature in the movie world that she did in live theater, and having a bankable star for the 1965 screen version was particularly important to 20th Century Fox after it famously had taken a major financial hit on “Cleopatra” (1963). “The Sound of Music” screenwriter Ernest Lehman was sold on Andrews from the start, and she was also the top choice of director Robert Wise, though he was reportedly also considering Grace Kelly — who had technically retired from acting to become Monaco’s princess — and Shirley Jones.

Wise and Lehman were able to get an early look at Andrews in “Mary Poppins” (1964), and as soon as they did, they were both determined to make her their Maria. It’s said that she hesitated a bit at first, but the filmmakers’ explanation of how they intended to treat the material allayed her concerns, and she made a sizable deal with Fox to star in “The Sound of Music” and another movie (the other picture turned out to be 1968’s “Star!,” a biography of entertainer Gertrude Lawrence that reunited Andrews with director Wise).

“The Sound of Music” was released a month before Andrews became an Oscar winner for “Mary Poppins,” and that triumph became a big selling point for “Sound” as it rolled out across the country after its initial reserved-seat engagements in major cities. That, and the rest of the story, has remained motion-picture history for what now has been 60 years.

Derek Hough

Q: I love Derek Hough in “Dancing With the Stars.” Has he ever done any acting roles? Does he have any coming up?

A: Oddly enough, “Dancing With the Stars” dance pro Derek Hough’s first screen role was a straight-ahead acting gig — no fancy feet required.

He had an uncredited role as a Hogwarts schoolboy in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 2001, years before the reality TV dance craze that made him famous.

Since then, his screen work has tended mostly toward dancing rather than acting, though he’s gotten to do a few characters along the way.

His next role won’t be dancing or acting, but it could be his toughest gig

”To Catch a Smuggler: Tropical Takedown” (Jan. 22)

OF DANCING WITH THE STARS ON ABC

yet: he’ll be producing and appearing in a documentary about his own life.

The reason it might be tough is that it won’t be about the fun parts — the stage triumphs or the Emmy-winning choreography jobs — it will be about the time his wife, fellow dancer Hayley Hough, collapsed backstage and nearly died, and her grueling recovery from brain surgery. The as-yet-untitled documentary is filming now, with no distribution or release date set.

He is at least accustomed to appearing as himself on screen — most of his 150-odd appearances have been as a dancer, including most notably “Dancing With the Stars” as well as several Disney specials.

However, as you suspect, there have been some outliers when he’s played characters — though they have at least been musically inclined.

The biggest was the 2013 film “Make Your Move,” a sort of dancethemed “Romeo and Juliet,” except the star-crossed lovers come from rival underground dance clubs.

He also did a three-episode acting arc in “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” in 2021, as well as a five-episode arc, split across two seasons in 2014 and 2016, in ABC’s music industry drama “Nashville.” Plus, he acted in the 2016 special “Hairspray Live!,” though his dancing was pretty key here as well.

Q: I was in a bookstore the other day and saw some novels written by Chris Colfer. Is that the same guy who starred in “Glee”? Is he an author now?

A: Chris Colfer, best known for starring as Kurt in the musical-comedy series “Glee” from 2009 to 2015, is indeed an author now, but not exclusively.

In fact, he was still starring in “Glee” when he signed a book deal in 2011 to write a series of children’s novels. The first one, “The Land of Stories: Wishing Spell,” was released the following summer and it was a hit. Multiple sequels and a couple of prequels followed.

Those are likely the books you saw, though he has others, including a novelization of the 2012 indie comedy “Struck by Lightning,” which he wrote and starred in. This past summer he published “Roswell Johnson Saves the World,” the first in what’s intended as a new kids book series.

But even with all this writing success, Colfer’s never given up acting. Most recently, he did a four-episode voice-acting arc in the Netflix kids series “Ridley Jones” in 2021. He’s also currently working on a new, more grown-up project. He has the lead role in the indie horror film “The Restoration at Grayson Manor,” which wrapped principal filming in the summer, though no release date has been announced yet.

There’s no better time to watch TV than in the cold and dark of late January. Thankfully, The CW has us covered, as four series are returning with premieres the week of Sunday, Jan. 19.

Starting off with a night of true crime, both “Police 24/7” and “Crime Nation” return to the small screen for a second season this week, with back-to-back premieres airing Thursday, Jan. 23. Up first comes “Police 24/7” — from executive producer SallyAnn Salsano (“Jersey Shore”) — which, according to the network, “delivers raw, unfiltered access into the world of sheriffs and police departments across the United States.” From high-stakes drug busts to everyday traffic stops, the series follows officers into situations big and small as they do whatever it takes to keep their communities safe.

Then, immediately afterwards, The CW’s first-ever true crime anthology series, “Crime Nation,” returns for a gripping new season, sharing episodes that dig further into real cases that have fascinated the nation by offering case updates and never-before-seen interviews with crime enthusiasts, social media sleuths, podcasters and digital detectives.

The following evening, on Friday, Jan. 24, both “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Masters of Illusion” make history-making returns as they enter their 11th seasons, each bringing some big shocks to the small screen. Hosted by Brooke Burke (“Dancing with the Stars”), “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” — the first of the night’s debuts — invites aspiring magicians to perform their best tricks in front of the most capable critics around: Penn and Teller themselves, a pair of renowned illusionists. As audiences watch, the performers showcase their magic tricks once before leaving the stage — and

before leaving Penn and Teller to see if they can figure out the trick behind the trick and recreate the magic themselves. If the performers succeed in tricking the pair, they earn themselves the right to perform alongside Penn and Teller in their celebrated show, held at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. After Penn and Teller’s curtain call, “Master of Illusion” keeps the magic going, returning with host Dean Cain (“Supergirl”) to showcase more great escapes, sleight-of-hand tricks and large-scale illusions, all performed by cutting-edge illusionists and escape artists. Whether it is magic or mischief, The CW has a premiere in store for everyone, with “Police 24/7,” “Crime Nation,” “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Masters of Illusion” returning the week of Sunday, Jan. 19.
